FWIW... I had a similar experience to coinboy's about 5 years ago in a shop in Albuquerque. There were three shops in the city when I lived there and this particular shop was one of the larger and had a decent selection of Indian Head Cents and early copper. I was just getting back into the hobby back then and was reticent to spend big bucks at the time so most of my purchases were $20-25 or so. On one of my trips back in to this particular shop [I had been in a few days earlier] I had just gotten some additional money and was seriously looking to buy some of the harder 1870's dates and spend a couple of hundred bucks to do so. I asked if I could see the Indian Head Cents again and the response I got was that: "they hadn't changed since the last time I was there"... to which I responded: "Gee, I thought you might have wanted to sell something today... this IS a business, right?". I never went back to that particular shop.
I've since grown in my collecting and sort of chuckle at the coins I purchased when I was getting back into the hobby, and I can see where some dealers might get a bit perturbed by someone coming in time and again for small purchaces or just to chat. However, if dealers like these have such thin-skins [it was suggested you develop a thick skin as a collector] they should find a less service oriented business. I get a bit irritated at people suggesting others develop a "thick skin" in order to accomodate the dip-$h!ts of the world.

Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free
Most folks on the board believe it is poor form to post publicly the contents of a PM one receives. I don't post the contents of such messages either, however, I believe one ultimately loses control of the confidentiality of any PM once one sends it to someone else.

OK I've tried to read as much of this post as I could and now for my Fifty Cents worth. I don't know who the coinkid is but if your a member of Greater Jacksonville Coin Club you might know me so at the next meeting come and introduce yourself.
A - Coin & Stamp is a well know BM coin shop here and most collectors know how Chip & Bill work. My first experience with Mr. Bill was over 20 years ago when I was returning to the hobby and wanted to collect Morgan dollars. To make it short he Stung me with so many raw over graded, cleaned, whized coins and just stuck it to me. One of is sayings is, " Just The Head" if you get what I mean. He use to call himself the "Master Dipper" from the way he turned circulated coins into MS ones to sell people like me. The one thing I got out of being burned by him was "Knowledge" and that turned into a dangerous thing. I started buying books about the coins I wanted to collect that where written by honorable and ethical dealers and collectors. One of the first was Wayne Miller's "The Morgan And Peace Dollar Textbook" which I got from him and he even signed it for me. It sits in my desk drawer to this day ready to remind me of what to look for in dollars.
coinkid I know your new found friend Chip and how he does not have time for even adult collectors if Mr. Bill isn't there and blows them off the way you've spoke of but that I think that is because he doesn't know anything about coins or how to relate with customers. You said that the owner was siting at his desk while your confrontation took place so I guess it was Mr. Bill. If Mr. Bill doesn't know you or think that you have lots of $$$ he doesn't give a rat's behind from what I've seen over the years. Your coming to the internet to voice your feelings is fine with me but around town here you're kicking a dead horse because everybody pretty much knows how things work at A - Coin. If you are serious about Morgans you need to see Emory Robinson at Edgewood Coin who has been around a long time and everyone deals with. Most of the dealeres here on this board know him and would probably tell you the same thing. Learn from your dealings with BM shop or any one you get coins from and it will make you a better collector. Like they say buy the coin and not the slab, well also buy the book before you buy the coin.
Good Luck coinkid and save your money for FUN there will be plenty of freindly helpful dealers there that will sell you coins and you should get a few deals and you might even stop by and say hi to Mr. Bill & Chip if he's there. >>
