this isn't something limited only to Leiana or YN's but to everyone, and not just here. i initiated some of that and if you wish to go back into the archives you'll see that for the most part she brought everything upon herself and simply couldn't bear criticism, choosing instead to see herself as a victim of some sort. that was when she climbed up onto the cross and left in a huff like many others for SleepyHollow. oh well, just another case of "I'll show you, I'll hurt me" -itis. >>

I thought the claim was that she left in protest when Mark Feld got banned?

sorry, but i wanted to head off the disinformation campaign before it picked up steam.

I thought the claim was that she left in protest when Mark Feld got banned?

if i remember correctly, that was the final reason for her departure, but she was gone in protest prior to that mainly because she had gotten into a rut by making posts and quoting facts from different sources in a manner which had become annoying. when she started to quote questionable or dubious information and was "called" on it, she just couldn't bear the criticism. too bad for that cause she seemed an eager collector with a lot of enthusiasm.

for the most part and with the exception of a couple members, the stuff she encountered was mild.a better approach would have been censorship/banning them with her staying, but i digress.

I agree it is not something limited to YN's, and this is really not about Amanda, but about the fact that the tolerance was lower, and the desire to point out her faults seemed awfully high compared to doing the same with regular posters who get their facts from the same place. You sort of support my whole point here: YN are... well... young. And immature at times, however, if we have a bit of extra patience with them, and realize that quoting from known sources is a good starting point that comes before being able to really form your own opinion, and supporting the issue, and pushing and asking 'yes, I know the book says... but what do YOU think?"
It is no different then bringing up my kids. They copy me, they copy tv, they copy each other, and from that, they form their own body of knowledge and opinions, as long as we don't shut them down. Being immature, and being young is not 'bringing it upon yourself'.
As to then bailing out and leaving in a huff, I agree with you it is pointless and a lot of people played that game at that time, but many of them did not even have the excuse of being kids...
I stand by my point that we should have EXTRA patience and tolerance for the YN's. It is a tough hobby even for the experienced, so imagine how intimidating it can be for kids.
  • keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
she was granted quite a bit of "leeway" in the same fashion as almost every YN has been that i'm aware of, and she wasn't the first to be treated bluntly when other, more tactful approaches fell on deaf ears.

Fair enough, certainly not worth an argument on Christmas eve!

I think that we would all agree we don't have enough YN's, and we can all do what we can to fix this.
I went to my kids school and gave a 2 hour 'seminar' on collecting, showing odd denominations and world coins, doing givaways and contests, and the kids loved it.
As much as I enjoy the adult banter here, I'd sacrifice some of it to see more young YN's here. I can imagine this places scares the heck of of the average younger YN!

Some seem to be under the impression that Amanda is a little kid. She isn't. She's a college student and was when she was posting here.

    Sophmore at that.
  • What I remember Is Amanda let people believe she was still a YN for sometime after
see was no longer a YN.

Great thread. I especially enjoyed it when Leiana/Amanda was brought up in it and was good for a couple dozen OT posts. Very nostalgic. Can we make it an annual ritual to talk about her this time of the year? image

Frank is a Navy vet who is an expert in cracking heads and making them see the light. If you need any help, just ask.

I might be able to use Frank. You see, there is a pretty good chance that the Jaguars will play the Steelers in the first round of the playoffs, and the Steelers could use some help. image

I think that the OP is fairly immature and learned his lesson...the hard way. In the old days, he would have told his parents about the episode in the store, they would have counseled him, and a 200+ post thread would not be necessary. I only hope that when my son has a similar experience in life, which I am sure he will, that he comes to me for guidance.

  • << <i>I am new to the boards as many of you know, and i have referred tomyself as a yn. i am not a yn by many standards, as i am 25. i am a new collector though, 4 years of collecting. If the potential dealer is rude or short or just plain busy, i try to give him the time to do whatever he is doing. I went to a shop here in cleveland and asked to see the lincoln cents he had that were graded. i also asked if he had any bank wrapped rolls of cents. he did show me quite abit, when i bought 17 rolls and i think 2 slabbed lincolns the total came to about $150. at the time it was alot of money to me, and he acted like if i was wasting his time. even if he made no other sales that day, $150 is more than alot of people make in a day at work. i am no big money spender on most series. afew yes, now. he was rude the next time i went in and didnt want to sell anything. i was looking for a 1889 CC morgan to, he had a few, only 1-2 i would have considered. but it was $3,800 i would rather give away than buy from him.

There are to many coin shops and dealers to have to be judged and discriminated against. if someone doesnt want to take the time to help you, to hell with them.

i go in every now and then to see if he'd like to buy some of my key dates. he just looks like his cat was ran over. 25 and with those. yup and i would have bought them through him.

id rather pay a buyers premium than go 20 minutes down the road.

    good luck >>

But you must remember, that $150 from that sale wasn't all profit for the dealer (assuming the dealer pays for his coins). The $150 you get from a paycheck is all profit (well, except after the 25% from taxes is taken out). Maybe the dealer only made $20 or $50 on that deal.

If you are truly concerned and think he should be invited to the discussion, why haven't you? Instead disparaging coinkid why don't you get the other side? >>

Why not just have coinkid tell the whole story?? Oh, and I'm only one of many that want to hear the whole story. Maybe you should direct some of your inquiries their way.

Yes, I think many people who read his post (on both of the coin forums it is on) equated it with a first time bad encounter they have had with a dealer. A one time only (with that dealer, because they never went back after they were treated like dirt) kind of thing.

What's different about this, as alluded to earlier, is this YN's previous, perhaps numerous contacts with this shop and the various "problems" he's had with them in the past. This may have nothing to do with his age, and we have no way of knowing what happened during his past visits to the shop that may have contributed to the outcome of the visit that is the subject of this thread. Sounds like more of an ongoing thing that just escalated between the two.
  • wow this one is still going, i realize not all the cash from the sale of a coin is profit. all i meant is that if the normal run of the mill coin shop had to say make 15-20% on every coin, why is my 15-20% not good enough? Unlike alot of people today I wasnt born into a wealthy or prominent family. Not that i am knocking that, i wish i had been sometimes. i just meant why do i need to prove myself as a collector to a potential seller? If I have the money and the coin is for sale, why be short or rude. I am only 25 and can have abit of a attitude now and then, but am always johnny susnshine when around coins. i just think even with 40 years as a dealer the guy should like this hobby enough to take the 5 minutes to help a customer out. Look at car slaesman, would you buy a $40,000 car from an a--? I wouldnt.

i just hope when i am into this at 40+ years i still have this level of passion and thirst for coin knowledge...

"Well, I just spoke to Chip- he seemned flustered cuz he is trying to put away the jewelry cases for the nigh- shop closes at 4. Told him I'm looking for high end Morgans- in the 67/68 range and wanted to know if it would be worth my time coming in.....

Let me say that I'm financially sound- I don't need a handout, I may not have a lot of 'extra' money to burn- but to tell me over the phone that it would be to MY advantage to come in AFTER the holidays to look at coins because they have limited space that houses jewelry? SO WHAT!!

I believe the lowest price on any Morgan in a 7 holder is a solid 900 bucks- what fool would tell you wait til next year?

For what its worth- I believe the kid- the shop sounds like a scam on old folks.

and I really don't care to hear crap that I was calling after hours- he answered the phone- bells should have lit up when anyone asks about large money coins or jewelry for that matter- hell I would open my shop on a Sunday if I knew a buyer was coming to me to spend some large money.

That's only one who has called him. I still do not see where he has been harassed. >>

He gave a pretty detailed account. I do not hear "the many" voicing their concerns. I have only directed my inquiries towards you because of the the unsubstantiated statements you've shared. You seem to shift around when confronted.

Instead of going on and on about harassment or questioning coinkids' story, why not follow your own advice and call him and get his side of the story. >>

Folks, you can't start a reference link to a thread on Page 2.
You gotta start from Page 1
then move to page 2 because not everybodies browser has the same page length.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!
  • Sorry...it was a link to my post not the thread. I will keep it in mind in the future.

Reminds me of the Seinfeld Soup Nazi episode. In this case, it is the Coin Nazi. "No coin for you! You are not permitted to come back for a year!". Just move on and take your business elsewhere.
