Very nice morgan in that "no line fatty"! It's all about the coins for me, so I've tolerated a little rude behavior here and there to get what I want. If there's rude behavior and they have nothing to offer me (in terms of good deals on problem free coins), the first visit is the last visit.

Thanks, I like it =p I tolerated a lot of rude behavior before at this dealer, but I'm done with them now.
Give Duval Coins a try. (6024 Atlantic Blvd., one block E. of University Blvd.). I grew up in Jax but haven't lived there in over 20 years. When I come back to visit family, I try to stop by to see what they have. The owner, Steve Sinclair and his assistant are always very cordial and helpful. I've spent quite a few hours there and have never observed anything but friendly and appropriate interactions with customers. I have a feeling you will be treated very well there. If you go, let everyone know how it went.
I would like to here the dealers side of this story as well. Calling this guy to give him a hard time is just wrong. Going to his booth to do the same is just as wrong. We only know one side of this deal.
I absolutely love that a couple of the biggest and most consistant chit-stirrers on this forum are calling for Coinkid855 and others to practice restraint.
I was thinking about my reply to your thread and what is going on here. Why trashing a coin hut is a good thing it does me no good here in Maryland to ever do any business with that shop you had a problem with.
As I was young and 22 years old, I was a store Manager for a huge Grocery Store named GIANT FOOD. I was making over $65k a year and had to get along with a lot of different people. I had older employees that didn't want to listen to a 22 year old kid/young man, I had younger people that wanted to side with me on other issues within the store. I know The reason for that was they wanted to f=off while I wasn't looking. And then came the customers. now I always remembered to this day, the CUSTOMER is always right within reason.
So what I am trying to say. Write a nice letter to the store manager/owner about your experience with his store that day, and what happened with Chip and yourself. Maybe you guys can work things out. If not move on!!
I left work many days with a bad taste in my mouth from many things that went on in my store. You must move on because this sh_t will eat you alive and also you might have a lawsuit against you if you don't watch yourself, ever heard of deflamation?
We don't know what really went on in that store but when a person gets heated up, we tend to see things our way and thats it. Good Luck, again write a letter, hell you might get a free discount or even a free coin. I feel ya.

Your observation is right on. Its really shameful too as they seem not to add anything positive here any more.
Well BlindedbyEgo and IrishMike if you are referring to me, why not grow a set and state such?
When badmouthing people, do you regularly perform this while cowering behind your computer and flexing your keyboard? Or could it be that maybe one or both of you called and harassed this guy?
Maybe both of you could post some highlights from the past year, a top 10 list of sorts, of your greatest shining contributions to this board and the numismatic community in general. Since the end of the year is upon us, this would be very fitting. I look forward to those threads from both of you.
Nowhere in my reply do I call for anyone to practice restraint. I point out that calling and harassing this dealer is childish and can be construed as telephone harassment, which is illegal. I ask what makes any of you that have called and harassed that guy any better than him.
What the dealer did was crappy, no doubt, but the last time I checked it was not illegal to treat a customer like crap.
While some of you might not like what I have to say at times, you can rest assured that I really don't care and that I won't candy coat my comments.

Make a mental note of the situation and move on. I still get bent out of shape on occasion when I feel someone has treated me badly in some part of the biz. What I am trying to do is change my paradigm... to use the info to my advantage without the person even knowing that I was pissed in the first place.
There is always opportunity in some shape or form.
Bottom line (and I still have to remind myself of this): If I let it get personal, I am usually the one out of line. Save your anger and channel it into opportunity. Learn more and cherry pick Chip. It WILL happen. After you cherry pick him, dont say anything. Just keep buying. Pretty soon you will get first shot at stuff so that you can cherry him more than anyone else. Then, the money you make off the picks will pay for the coins for your collection. It is a beautiful thing...trust me.
Knowledge and relationships. That is what this hobby is about.
<< <i>Who wants to get to age 70 and figure out you spent your life investing time and money into something that no one cares about....... >>
If I reach 70 and have a large enough retirement portfolio that the coins don't need to be sold, and if I still derive a lot of enjoyment from collecting, then I really don't care if no one else cares about it. The monetary investment wouldn't significantly change our lifestyle, and the time investment was time well spent if I derived enjoyment from said time.

Now, Goose, I've always held you in the highest regard. But you are a chit stirrer. So there it is.
I like this board... I read some great threads and see some nice coins. It's a real shame that a thread like this will go 200+, but coin threads that I (and others) have posted go maybe 10-15.
And as much as I like you, chit stirrer that you are, I need justify my presence here no more than do you.
Although I have not read the entire thread, I'll add one thing...
When we can't comprehend someone's seemingly bad behavior, it's usually because we don't have enough information. I'd like to hear the dealer's side of the story.

The only thing I can add to this thread that relates to the original story is this...
I feel the YN should have returned to the shop with a parent. It is the parent's responsibility to monitor what their child spends money on and where that child goes (both on-line and in "real life.")
I cannot imagine a parent unwilling to defend their son or daughter in a situation such as this.
Just my $0.02.

"Bongo hurtles along the rain soaked highway of life on underinflated bald retread tires."
Anyways, I've had some previous problems with them before, such as them selling me coins that were cleaned when they didn't warn me about it (I was younger) and much of their coins are overpriced.
CoinKid - When you learned that the coins were cleaned, did you discuss that with the owner? How did that go? Also, have you discussed the overpriced coins with the owner? He might benefit from the feedback.

A parental visit to the shop is definitely a good idea. Let's find out what really happened, and see if it can be made better.

Just to respond to this: There were multiple threads where folks made various attacks. During one, there was an issue of sexual innuendo, in which a number of people pointed out she was a kid, and then others went on the offensive stating that kids should not be hanging around on the boards if they can't take the heat. Then there was a series of threads about people like Amanda simply posting things they copied from books, but having no original ideas of their own of merit. Then there was the ones where folks accused her of using her status as a YN to get attention and for special treatment. There were others. There were supporters, but there were a handful of people on the attack. She left specifically because of the issues she ran into on the boards here, and went across the street where she felt she was treated with more respect. Anyhow, this is not about Amanda in particular, just a clear statement that coin collectors have shown a tendancy to not be gentle on the YN's. They should be encouraged, given special attention, and shown patience. Like it or not, the hobby dies without new blood.

The following statement alone is enough to give me the willies!
Secondly. I have NOT asked people to call to harass. I made a joke, and if someone took me literally, then I suppose that was my fault. Either way, what I really want is for people to call and simply tell them that they think what they did is wrong.

I agree, harassing the dealer isn't the best way to handle the situation, but I don't believe it will kill the hobby. What will kill it is people choosing to collect something else besides coins, because the hobby isn't attractive because it doesn't look like fun. If I were a budding collector, and I read this thread, I would consider spending my money on a different hobby. Despite the good advice here by some, and whether I believed the story or not, I would do so for the following reasons:
-A YN posts a story about a bad dealer experience, and others reply that this kind of thing happens all the time.
-Believing the story true, several people defend the actions of this dealer.
-Believing the story false, several people launch mean-spirited attacks on the OP.
-The atmosphere this creates causes all sides to attack each other.
All this adds up to a bad impression of the hobby to anyone who reads it. There. I've said my peace. Now I'm going back to my coins.

Yes, I was addressing you. But, I never stated that you called upon someone to call the dealer. The OP/YN did, however.
The OP was wrong to try to get people calling the coin shop. It is one thing to share a story, and another to incite the group into action, when only one side fo the story is present. Even if the guy is a dolt at the coin shop, a bunch of us calling him and hammering at him is not going to improve his attitude towards YN's. The best thing everyone can do is chose to not do business with people like this, and move on. At times we tend to react with a certain amount of blooddlust when there is a coin dealer begging for punishment... the OP chummed the waters and the sharks are looking for food.
Life is too short to do business with people who treat anyone rudely, and life is definately too short to go on crusades to try to fix anyone else's bad attitudes.

I am new to the boards as many of you know, and i have referred tomyself as a yn. i am not a yn by many standards, as i am 25. i am a new collector though, 4 years of collecting. If the potential dealer is rude or short or just plain busy, i try to give him the time to do whatever he is doing. I went to a shop here in cleveland and asked to see the lincoln cents he had that were graded. i also asked if he had any bank wrapped rolls of cents. he did show me quite abit, when i bought 17 rolls and i think 2 slabbed lincolns the total came to about $150. at the time it was alot of money to me, and he acted like if i was wasting his time. even if he made no other sales that day, $150 is more than alot of people make in a day at work. i am no big money spender on most series. afew yes, now. he was rude the next time i went in and didnt want to sell anything. i was looking for a 1889 CC morgan to, he had a few, only 1-2 i would have considered. but it was $3,800 i would rather give away than buy from him.
There are to many coin shops and dealers to have to be judged and discriminated against. if someone doesnt want to take the time to help you, to hell with them.
i go in every now and then to see if he'd like to buy some of my key dates. he just looks like his cat was ran over. 25 and with those. yup and i would have bought them through him.
id rather pay a buyers premium than go 20 minutes down the road.
Then there was a series of threads about people like Amanda simply posting things they copied from books, but having no original ideas of their own of merit.
this isn't something limited only to Leiana or YN's but to everyone, and not just here. i initiated some of that and if you wish to go back into the archives you'll see that for the most part she brought everything upon herself and simply couldn't bear criticism, choosing instead to see herself as a victim of some sort. that was when she climbed up onto the cross and left in a huff like many others for SleepyHollow. oh well, just another case of "I'll show you, I'll hurt me" -itis.

Don't ever change that goose. I see it as a good thing.
If you ever do, please let us know before someone reports it as a hijacked account.
If the Coin industry does not take the time to educate new collectors, their product's value will decrease.
Education is the key to continued interest.

<< <i>Guess we know what the "A" in A-Coin stands for. >>
Don't forget to add the "A" to those that called and harrassed the dealer.
<< <i>Well BlindedbyEgo and IrishMike if you are referring to me, why not grow a set and state such?

Yea, that is what I see too Ken.
And goose.......don't you go listening to all this kinder gentler baloney and go wuss out on us.....
Tell it like it is like you always do buddy
When we can't comprehend someone's seemingly bad behavior, it's usually because we don't have enough information. I'd like to hear the dealer's side of the story.

I feel the YN should have returned to the shop with a parent. It is the parent's responsibility to monitor what their child spends money on and where that child goes (both on-line and in "real life.")
I cannot imagine a parent unwilling to defend their son or daughter in a situation such as this.

<< <i>Well , I just called and the person answering the phone told me that this young kid was on the phone leaving profanities on the answering machine. Coinkid , is this true? remember --TREAT PEOPLE HOW YOU WANT TO BE TREATED! I like to hear the other side. His response is peculiar. This young kid left profanities on the answering machine. Sounds like this guy is definitely guilty. He doesn't address what happened in the store.

<< <i>I remember watching Amanda getting chased off of these boards, despite her obvious enthusiasm. >>
HUH?
Amanda (aka: Leiana) went to live across the street with coinguy1 and conder101 and I don't recall her ever being treated badly on these boards! >>
Just to respond to this:
There were multiple threads where folks made various attacks.

Life is too short to do business with people who treat anyone rudely, and life is definately too short to go on crusades to try to fix anyone else's bad attitudes.
<< <i>The OP was wrong to try to get people calling the coin shop.

There are to many coin shops and dealers to have to be judged and discriminated against. if someone doesnt want to take the time to help you, to hell with them.
i go in every now and then to see if he'd like to buy some of my key dates. he just looks like his cat was ran over. 25 and with those. yup and i would have bought them through him.
id rather pay a buyers premium than go 20 minutes down the road.
good luck
this isn't something limited only to Leiana or YN's but to everyone, and not just here. i initiated some of that and if you wish to go back into the archives you'll see that for the most part she brought everything upon herself and simply couldn't bear criticism, choosing instead to see herself as a victim of some sort. that was when she climbed up onto the cross and left in a huff like many others for SleepyHollow. oh well, just another case of "I'll show you, I'll hurt me" -itis.
