Bad experience at A-Coin in Jacksonville, Florida....

Hey everyone, I wanted to just warn everyone about the people at A-Coin in Jacksonville, Florida. I'm a YN, and they apparently do not know how to treat their customers right. A-Coin is the closest coin store to me, and today I left my volunteering job early so I could stop by and check out their Morgans (I wanted to buy a few for my set-in-progress). Anyways, I've had some previous problems with them before, such as them selling me coins that were cleaned when they didn't warn me about it (I was younger) and much of their coins are overpriced. Anyways, getting back today, I walked in and there was a group of about 3 people there. I was walking around looking at the displays until they left. Right after they left, I walked over to Chip, the assistant to the owner.

Anyways, I asked him if I could see some graded 62-63 Morgans. He gives me some crap about how they're too busy to do it at this time of the year.I look around. I'm the only one in the store. So I ask him why I can't see them, because I'm the only one in the store. He then goes on explaining that "at any moment, we could have someone walk in that's a $20,000 deal, and they will leave if they see you with the Morgans spread out on the table." Obviously then, he was discriminating against me as a YN, because I don't have enough money for him apparently (I had $1100, cash....) The whole time this is going on, the owner is watching, not saying a word. So I tell him that I won't be coming back and he just says "I don't care, I don't care! This isn't Walmart!"...So I left and I was fuming.

I got home and told my parents, and they agreed that I should call back and try to talk to the owner. So I call and Chip picks up. This is what I actually said. "Um, Hello, could I speak to the owner please?" and Chip screams "NO!' and hangs up the phone!! Can you believe that!!?? What a jerk! I was sitting there thinking about what I should do next, and the phone rings. It's A-Coin. I pick it up and it's Chip, explaining "Sorry, we had another customer." Another customer??? Are you kidding me!!?? He SLAMMED the phone down after screaming at me! What a LIAR!

I then ask him why he wouldn't let me look at Morgans while I was there, and I explained that i was ready to buy. He tells me again that he doesn't care, and he tells me that they don't have any Morgans for me to look at! What is he shovelling? It was a completely different excuse than what he gave me earlier! I point that out to him, and he tells me that I am no longer welcome in the store for one year...(haha, not as if I was going back anyways....)

So, in closing, STAY AWAY FROM A-COIN!! THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU AT ALL UNLESS YOU'RE LOADED!

Sorry, I just had to get that off my chest, because I am still MAD....image

Sorry to hear that. I had many instances like that when I was young. When I was 22, I looked 16 and made absolute STUPID money. I asked to look at a 1893 S Morgan at a coin show once and the guy at the table laughed at me and told me I couldn't afford it. I said "Really?" and pulled out about 2 grand in hundreds and walked away.

If you're ever in St George, UT, come by the shop and you can spend as much time as you like looking at coins and asking questions. I'm sure others here would welcome you too.
I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector.

  • Old Chip sounds like a real winner. (LOSER!) Good for you for outing them, and shame on you A-coin!!!

Sorry to hear of the problem. Some people are so short sighted, they don't realize you are THEIR future. Life is too short to waste anymore time with them.

    Hahaha...I think I have a good guess.
  • I hate to generalize about a certain area of the country...but I went to 2 different stores in Gainesville, Fla this past year and they were terrible...rude people who dont even care! Sorry to hear about your experience.
  • i can`t believe the owner was present and heard this and did nothing. no matter what type of buisness it is the customer cannot be treated like that. it would be the assistants last day on the job if it were my store.

Unfortunately, there appears to be a sub-species of coin dealer who are perpetually angry with the world. Although they hold young collectors in particular disdain, their picture of the world is more distorted than the watch in Salvador Dali’s paintings. These sad miscreants browbeat potential customers, lie and cheat the uninformed and innocent and treat others as if they exist only to play into the sub-species’ self-hatred.

Take your business (and enjoyment of the hobby) elsewhere that this dealer’s shop and never look back.

(Anyway -- he probably picks his nose and wipes on his coin slabs.)

Sad tale..... as we have been taught in customer service.... 1 bad customer tale can reach 100 customers since the story will spread...

Im not saying that any of us dealers are perfect, at any time I am sure every dealer has lost his temper but what happened to you seems to be just exactly what you say....that this dealer is not interested in working with YN's

anyway coinkid if you do get a chance to come to FUN, please stop bye my table, even if its just to say hi and introduce yourself!

sure there are plenty of dealers at FUN who will be happy to help you!!!!

Coinkid - Have not been to the specific store, but that type of person is represented among some coin dealers. I've seen and heard dealers standing at their grubby tables spewing venom and profanities at anyone who doesn't buy something. I've seen them abuse kids for asking to buy something from the dealer's junk box on the table. The professional dealers on these boards have likely seem much more of this kind of behavior.

A collection of the best of the worst anecdotes might make fn reading for the sane crowd that enjoys the hobby and business of numismatics. The “jerks” wouldn’t understand it….

The bad news is that you wasted your day to visit a jerk dealer.

The good news is that there are plenty of other dealers you can work with, especially on the Florida First Coast. The aforementioned coin dealer does not deserve your business especially after the negativity directed at you. Unfortunately the aforementioned isn't the only jerk coin dealer around.

Want to spend your $1,100 to avenge your mistreatment? Use the money to buy an ad in your local newspaper describing your experience at the shop.

    What a jerk!

I'd make myself known at his table at a big money show and buy something really expensive at the table next to his!

Then toss him a "rasberry" as I walked away! A big loud RASBERRY!

  • This content has been removed.
  • Coin collecting is a tough ride for YN's often.
Sad really, as we worry about coin values, which means we need future buyers, who ultimately will be today's YN's, and yet many collectors and dealers ignore or tread YN's rudely.
I remember watching Amanda getting chased off of these boards, despite her obvious enthusiasm.
I've heard other stories like yours.
I wonder why so many (not all, obviously!) collectors and sellers feel like grey hair is a prerequisite for wanting to collect?

The hobby needs every new convert it can get, and yet many are lost due to this type of situation. REally self destructive.

Hey, sorry about your experience at a bad dealer. Unfortunately he isn't the only one like that around but it doesn't mean that there aren't any good coin dealers around. Try others and you're bound to find somebody better.

Since we have the guy's phone number, let's all call and tell the guy what we think of him.

I hope the Son of a B collapses and folds up, what an arrogant bunch of As*holes, I hope everyone here who reads this stays away from this crowd. I have had folks in my shop that i knew were not going to buy anything, and took up a lot of my time, wen I could be doing other stuff, but never would treat any customer like this.

Sounds like they're sharing a booth with a bling dealer. Corner booth, too, which would make it a convenient place to run into people and carry on a conversation.

Similar incidents have occured with me in the past. One time at a very small show I recall an occasion when I asked to see a $300.00 coin and I was told that it was "out of my financial reach". Although I have more money today than I did back then, I was more than capable of handling a 3-large purchase. Funny thing is that this dealer is active today and a good friend to several forum members here. I buried the animosity with this dealer once I learned about his personal and professional shortcomings.

From being around the numismatic and real estate business and being an avid observer of the gambling industry, I have learned that it is impossible to judge by looks alone how financially wealthy somebody is. Often times it's the folks you would least expect to have loads of money who are the ones who actually do. On the flip side, the people who spend extra effort to flash their cash and jewelry conspicuously around are the ones who you're most likely to find short on funds.

Remember that experience and success talk. Let your coins and knowledge speak for themselves and you'll earn respect eventually.

Unfortunately, grownups don't always give young folks the right amount of respect, and your case illustrates this point very well. But, them being rude was "over the top" unacceptable.

I can remember feeling disadvantaged because of my age and experience. If its any comfort, this eventually ends with time.

Hopefully, this type of service won't happen again to you. This particular coin business will end up losing in the long run if they don't excercise more courtesy.

Thanks for sharing your story, my friend. And good luck in the great hobby that we share.

You should have pulled out your cash and said "pitty..Ill spend my money elsewhere then" and walk out.

Same thing at some shows...people see a young kid and assume they don't have any money. Bad assumption on there part...I know my fair share of YNs that have more spendable cash than most adults.

You have more huevos than a lot of "adult" posters here in laying out what happened to you and by WHO!

I am sorry you went through that but it sounds like they aren't the ones you would want to deal with anyway.

Are they ANA/PNG members? Anything? If so, I wouldn't be above contacting those orgs about this shop/people and stating what happened and that it is sad they are treating YNs like that (or anyone).

Do you know any other local YNs? Do they have the same experience?

There are a few things i would do, but it wouldn't be nice of me to post them image
