He talked up the First hags as well as these high mintage plats. Perhaps its time to do your own research and not buy into the hype. Low mintage, limited supply and high demand is the equation you need to focus on. Not the opinion of the "hype masters".
Luv ya FBH, you bring some good stats on the modern issues to this board, but I think you missed the target on the some of the high mintage items such as the first hags and reverse plats sets.. Only the first handful of 70's to hit the bay seem to to get the "flippers profit".

******************* FBH may have felt the first Hags and Plat Hags were going to be hot but based on what rational? What in the mintage profiles and broader series profiles made a strong case for the coins...................NOTHING! Quoting 70 pops are little help because the pops are constantly expanding therefore the half life on coins values is very short if absolute coin rarity in some form is not present.
Quoting published data is not the same as having a good data network and understanding market dynamics.
This board has known for months that the plat halves in the anniversary set are going to be the most common dogs in the whole changing reverse plat history. We know from the $5 gold commems and $10 gold commems that anything over 10,000 coins is going to trade for just over melt for a long time. The first few First Hags with 20,000 mintages were in trouble from the start and it was obvious. Stick with the basics.
I find it amazing the 2007-w platinum half and quarter with their total struck mintages less than that of a $5 MS Jackie Robinson (a $4,000 coin) are overlooked while all this attention is on 30,000 mintage coins because of excessive interest in packaging.
For those of you interested in coins and can hold an issue for more than five minutes take the time to look through your Red Book and study the moderns and classic commem sections. Look at the mintage ranges and relative rarity of the coins in their series. Just that simple study is enough to keep us from following the lemmings and their leaders off into the sea.
Regarding FLBuff - Look - just like Eric, I pointed out these 10th Anniv coins are essentially "not in the same league" as the low mintage Proof Plats, especially from 2003-2005 - those are some of the "great" modern coins of the future IMHO. Heck, even Larry Whitlow - a well respected classic coin dealer referred to the 2004 PR70DC $100 Plat the other day as a "RARE" coin (and told me it was OK for me to quote him!!) But, to the entent FLBuff was "high" on the 10th Anniv sets holdered as First Strike and in 70 grade - don't write off FLBuff yet.... IMHO, there will be decent demand for these coins FS 70 coins once the mass selling slows down and the "weak sisters" sell off their "flipping material". For what they are, I think the pricing on the 70FS sets, going forward, will surprise a few folks.

First strike 70s may hold some water because at some point there is a limit as to how may will have that designation.
FS-69 is going to carry very little if any weight and the 70 grade blue tags aren't going to have much value either after the whole load has been sent to PCGS 4 times as crack outs.
In the 1960s IBM, Lockheed, Texaco and many other companies were looked at as forever leaders in their market. What happens to the value of these slabs when one day PCGS and NGC do not dominate the market just as those 1960s leaders do not today? Answer: back to coin rarity and condition. The rest will not mean jack. Now I have no doubt that some will make some money on the flags in the future but it will come to an end its a question of how long.
Very true, but the prices are dropping rapidly. The PCGS 70/70 sets are going to hold value ok over time but even the PCGS sets below 70/70 are not doing well.

Goldbully - Actually, I am surprised to see what I am seeing. IMHO, the 70 set should be trading higher than $3,000 in my view and has little to do with the issue of platinum collectors either. Well see if this turns out to be around the "bottom".

I too was wondering what people are paying for the individual coins. Here is what I can see:
1. $3,000 for the 70s (hopefully bottomed there) 2. $1900-2000 for the 69s. 3. $2500 for the Rev PR70, PR69
based on the difference in price between (1) and (3), I would put the PR70 $500 more than the PR69. And the based on the difference between (2) and (3), I again would have to give the RevPR70 a $500 premium over the 69.
My question here is what are the 69s worth? Do we cut this down the middle - 975 / 975 or is there more value in one over the other? I didn't come across anybody selling just one 69 except for myself -a PR69 with buy-it-now 950- no takers yet (maybe since its a store listing?)
And based on the valuation of the 69, I would add the $500 premium to the 70. So, if you DO value each 69 at 975 then it would make sence that I'm getting $1,400 offers for my Rev70, and that Joe sold his PR70 for the same $1400.
If anybody has input what the the individual coins are worth, please share. ~n

At $975, in terms of what you paid for the coin from the mint plus the grading and shipping fees, plus the ebay and paypal fees, You are taking a significant loss on that dog.

Why is it any different than those selling 69 sets for 1850-2100? I personally think that I'm making out better (if it sells) since there are more PR69s than RevPR69s.
maybe there is a overall lack of demand right now because PCGS has not required the Platinum 10th Anniversary $50 anywhere yet....how long will PCGS take to react???? weeks...months..quarters???
PCGS created the product but it has not made a place to put our prized 69 and 70 coins.... its not like PCGS did not know that the USM was going to make the set....
one would assume that the PR would be required in the $50 and Complete Proof Series....but what about the RP....where will it find a home????
will a new home be created for 10th and 20th Eagle collectors???? maybe just Reverse Proof collectors....who knows....
i really think PCGS should think more about where these coin belong....make it a REGISTRY requirement and then promote it to the collector base....then demand will be created and a better market price will appear....

My math says a loss is a loss. That coin cost you $975 from the mint ($1950/2). After grading fees and shipping and selling fees, you're looking at losing about $80-$100 on the coin. Now you may or may not make it up on the other coin. But you won't get rich that way. Seems like a lot of work just for listening to the Hypemasters and following the FBHBuffaloStampede (yes you heard the term hear first). Perhaps it might be better to return the set or hold and pray.

I am willing on taking that 'loss' on the coins since I just sold the Rev70 for $1,670. I would have preferred if the mint would accept half returns.

What they needed to do was sell a 1oz Rev. Pr single coin. Not two 1/2 oz. OR even just 1 - 1/2 oz coin. Putting in the regular proof is just taking advantage of the consumer, pretty much saying if you want the Rev. Pr, you HAVE to buy a regular proof first.

That's BS in my book. >>
absofreakinlutely.. the nearly $2000.00 price scared off a lot of people who otherwise probably would have been willing to part with half of that if The Mint had just sold the Reverse Proof by itself as a 10nd Anniversary "set".. there was no reason to bundle it with a regular Proof except sheer greed by The Mint.. the Silver set with three coins for a hundred bucks?.. sure.. something yer average collector could afford.. so up it went, and away it went.. but two grand?.. Platinum ain't Silver..
had they sold the Reverse Proof by itself, i've no doubt it would have sold out long ago.. as it is, this saga drags on and on..

"MOST EXPENSIVE AND RAREST METAL".. uh-huh.. not with Rhodium at over $7000/oz it isn't.. price-wise, Platinum is to Rhodium what uhh.. {{can't think of any analogy that makes sense}}..
can't wait for the Mint to start making Rhodium American Eagles.. "Three-coin Anniversary set, only $25,000.00.. limit one"..

If everybody and their mother own these designations, the scarcity factor sorta flies out the window.

<< <i>Ideas on avg. prices for these coins????? Rev.pr 70 FS ?? $2000 Rev pr 69 FS? $1200 proof FS 70?$1200 proof FS 69? $800. Do these prices sound right, right now or anyone else have different prices for now? >>
That is not too far off on prices, maybe the Proof FS 70 a little higher and the reverse a little lower..
I accepted an offer of $1405 for my Proof FS 70 and now I will keep my Rev PF 69. I have about $830 in it.
Joe
I don't remember them doing that in the past.
Maybe they figured I might be sending them back.

I too was wondering what people are paying for the individual coins. Here is what I can see:
1. $3,000 for the 70s (hopefully bottomed there)

Platinum is climbing to the sky.
Will it be pulled soon????
I say YES!!!!!!
Your thoughts?????

What they needed to do was sell a 1oz Rev. Pr single coin. Not two 1/2 oz. OR even just 1 - 1/2 oz coin. Putting in the regular proof is just taking advantage of the consumer, pretty much saying if you want the Rev. Pr, you HAVE to buy a regular proof first.
That's BS in my book.
<< <i>I'm glad I sent my second set to PCGS rather than the Mint last week. It was about a 50/50 call since I could get FS. >>
Based on the odds you did a wise move. But beware that odds don't always play your way (especially with very little quantity)

absofreakinlutely.. the nearly $2000.00 price scared off a lot of people who otherwise probably would have been willing to part with half of that if The Mint had just sold the Reverse Proof by itself as a 10nd Anniversary "set".. there was no reason to bundle it with a regular Proof except sheer greed by The Mint.. the Silver set with three coins for a hundred bucks?.. sure.. something yer average collector could afford.. so up it went, and away it went.. but two grand?.. Platinum ain't Silver..
had they sold the Reverse Proof by itself, i've no doubt it would have sold out long ago.. as it is, this saga drags on and on..
- John Wayne, "The Shootist" (1976.. his final film)..
However the fact the proofs are only being graded 70s 25% (as apposed to the 50% for the reverse) is really putting a spin on things
How is this eBay listing up to $1,925?

"MOST EXPENSIVE AND RAREST METAL".. uh-huh.. not with Rhodium at over $7000/oz it isn't.. price-wise, Platinum is to Rhodium what uhh.. {{can't think of any analogy that makes sense}}..
can't wait for the Mint to start making Rhodium American Eagles.. "Three-coin Anniversary set, only $25,000.00.. limit one"..
