PCGS GUIDANCE - 2007 10th ANNIVERSARY PLATINUM EAGLES
- December 17, 2007
To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Platinum American Eagle Coin Program, the U.S. Mint created a two-piece Proof set for sale to collectors, containing the following coins: 1) 2007-W $50 Proof – identical to the coins issued earlier this year, and 2) 2007-W $50 Reverse Proof – a completely new style for Proof platinum coins, with frosted fields and brilliant devices.
The American Eagle 10th Anniversary Platinum Coin Set is limited to 30,000 sets. The Mint began accepting orders for these sets on December 13, 2007, with an expected shipping date of December 31.
PCGS will recognize each of the coins from the 10th Anniversary Set with a separate coin number and a “10th Anniversary Set” designation. The First StrikeSM option will be available for the Reverse Proof $50 only and must be requested at the time of submission. Any coins received or postmarked within 30 days of the initial shipment date (to be announced) qualify for the First StrikeSM designation. There is a $10 fee for each First StrikeSM insert, in addition to the normal grading fees.
IMPORTANT REQUIREMENTS: All coins must be submitted in the original, sealed, unopened Mint packaging (the 2007-W $50 Proof was already issued earlier this year, thus the packaging must remain unopened for the coins to qualify for the 10th Anniversary Set designation). Because of the value of the individual coins, all submissions must be made under the Regular Service level or higher tiers. All 10th Anniversary set submissions should be made on a separate submission form clearly marked with the request “10th Anniversary Set Designation.” Mint packaging will be returned upon request at a cost of $2 per set (except in cases where PCGS ships using the customer’s account number, i.e. Fed-Ex and other services). Collectors and dealers may submit 10th Anniversary Platinum coins at coin shows, where a PCGS representative will confirm the seal on the Mint packaging, remove the coins (in their capsules), return the packaging to the customer, and sign the submission form confirming the “10th Anniversary Set” designation.

"Must use the regular submission" $30 grading (each coin) + $10 first strike (one coin) + shipping both ways. Ouch.
Not entirely - there is one open issue. The regular issue coin does not get FS even though the gold and silver Proof did under the exact same circumstances? I have emailed PCGS just to make sure they intended for that inconsistent treatment of the Anniv Eagle Plat proofs.
Wondercoin
the other anniversary sets got one, correct?
would this be a deterrant to keeping the sets sealed as there will be many more in this anniversary set of the proof than issued by the mint?
BTW thanks for posting
ps i see wondercoin posted above me with answers.... :-)
<< <i>so this is different by not giving a FS designation to the proof.

Does it really matter? You still have to keep it sealed to get the 10th anniversary label for the proof. Just this label alone separates it from the standard issue.
Did it matter to the highly collectible Proof Gold FS 20th Anniv coin? Of course it did - right?

I wonder if the PR70DCAM First Strike® non - 10th anniversary $50 Proof will sell for more than the PR70DCAM non - First Strike®, 10th anniversary Proof since the 2007-W First Strike® PR70DCAM $50 Proof currently has a population of just 56 coins and the 2007-W $50 10th anniversary PR70DCAM pop will surley be higher.
<< <i>Fair enough, at least PCGS will recognize the 2007-W $50 Proof from the set with a 10th anniversary label, though not the First Strike® designation. Still should be the key to a perfect 10th anniversary set and command a premium over the non - 10th anniversary, non First Strike® designated 2007-W $50 Proof. I wonder if the PR70DCAM First Strike® non - 10th anniversary $50 Proof will sell for more than the PR70DCAM non - First Strike®, 10th anniversary Proof since the 2007-W First Strike® PR70DCAM $50 Proof currently has a population of just 56 coins and the 2007-W $50 10th anniversary PR70DCAM pop will surley be higher. >>
you couldn't have been more concise

I have the regular proof 20th anniversary gold coin in proof 69 First Strike that I picked up for melt on Teletrade.
Even more of a reason to maintain consistency between all 3 metals!

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Eric, on another thread had reported 14,000+ Platinum sets ordered.

It depends on his definition of "is" is. Also, he predicts a possible 1,000% appreciation. Dang, I should've bought more sets...wait...I can because they are still for sale.

no reason to not give the proof first strike. what's the difference anyway. $10 an order more PCGS, come on, that's easy money...

edited to say:
I think I'm changing my mind on the proof first strike....it was struck several months ago, and it should not have the designation the more I consider it.
People need to relax at times and just take a deep breath....
I really laughed seeing the "well fine then! We'll take out coins over to NGC and PCGS will lose the the fees".... Funny little threats.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
Goldbully - The reason the coin should be a First Strike is that it will be receiving A DIFFERENT COIN NUMBER ALL TOGETHER. Just as PCGS had the regular Proof Gold Eagle from the 20th Anniv set last year receive a separate First Strike on its new coin number - separate and apart from the $50 Proof Gold Eagle First Strike of 2/06 when it was released as part of the 4 pc annual Proof Gold set 8 months earlier.

My T shirt, however, might be a tad snug.

Good point, Wondercoin....I did not know that.
OK, let me think on it.
I would love the FS designation on my proof, that's a fact....just being greedy here.
It means exactly how the RP is labeled.
Since that $50 Proof Coin is still in a SEALED box, it is part of the set and can NOT be swapped out.
What Mitch said is right on.
PCGS just 'forgot'.
I am sure they will correct and rather than be inconsistent!
Right?....
For the early AM forum members, in case you mised this one!!!!!!!
<< <i>I haven't understood people getting their panties in a twist over this.....NONE have been shipped/received yet, so it isn't like PCGS was running out of time.

I kinda liked the thought of being able to open the box and view the coins before submitting them, but I guess I'll just go with the flow of the hobby.
What I find is also funny here is that, as Coinlearner points out, this exercise will cost between $90-100 for each set; yet the same hue and cry about the CAC sticker amounting to a "tax" on coin sales is all but silent here.
IT AIN'T OVER TILL ITS OVER!!
Wondercoin
it is just humorous watching this game unfold....
Are they still enforcing the minimum or is this some kind of exception? The mint limits purchases to 1 set (2 coins), and these coins have to be separate from other submissions. Most regular people will only be submitting 2 coins. Are you sure we don't have to use the "Express Special" submission level?
Edited to add: Or is it possible to submit 3 other regular service level coins on a separate form in the same shipment?

PCGS will offer special First StrikeSM/10th Anniversary Set inserts for these coins subject to the following special limitations:
1. All coins must be submitted in the original, unopened Mint packaging as received from the Mint within 30 days of the original release date (to be announced) or sealed and postmarked within that 30 day period. Because the 2007-W $50 Regular Proof was already issued earlier this year, the packaging must remain unopened for these coins to qualify for these special inserts.
Individual submissions of the 2007-W $50 Reverse Proof will qualify for First StrikeSM/10th Anniversary Set inserts as long as they are received within 30 days of their original release dates.

Yep, both coins will now be designated First Strike® - 10th anniversary All those that canceled are going to be sick when they see what a perfect 70 set goes for
The regular proof coin is no longer "junk" - I worked real hard to have Ron reconsider that particular issue. You guys approve?

Have they a reason to do that? Has the Mint done it before.? Would they be able to ship the remaining orders in time for the First Strike® cut-off
