My sets were just logged into the system, shipped them 12-24, they arrived Wednesday in CA around 6:30 a.m., were signed for at 6:30 p.m., and system says received today, I'm sure they are flooded with stuff, but with express I'm thinking next week for grades...
Their policy is a bunch of crap. They are being inconsistent. I wonder if PCGS stocked up on 2007 PR70DCAM FS plats before stating they will not give the 10th anniversary set a FS on the regular proof... After all, their first strike designation has nothing at all to do with die used (legitimate first strike coins) it has everything to do with then the package is delivered from the US Mint...
Good point made earlier, they gave the FS designation to coins submitted in the 3 coin 10th anniversary sets after the regular FS designation had expired for the 2006 proof silver dollar. I guess they just had a LOT more to make then...

They are designating the 10th anniversary Proof with First StrikeSM - 10th anniversary designation if the set is submitted in the sealed Mint shipping box.
As you stated correctly, all First StrikeSM means is 'shipped within the first 30 days'. That being the reason why I think PCGS will designate the 10th anniversary $50 Proof coin as First StrikeSM. Despite being the same as the $50 Proof coin released earlier in the year, it has a different coin number since it belongs to a different set which if submitted in a sealed box can be verified and would allow it to qualify under the First StrikeSM designation guidelines.

Is there a place on the PCGS website where they explain what First Strike is? I'm not talking about a press release or news story archive. Their business is grading service, so you would expect there to be page or at least a paragraph explaining what this service is. In fact, First Strike doesn't even appear on the 2007 submission forms, IIRC.
I just find it interesting that PCGS offers a service that they don't seem to advertise or explain well.

Nice coins but I'm going to wait since the Plat market is cooling way down right now. Lots of bargins on the 2006 W UNC's with a much lower mintage and I've seen the 1/10 ounce 2004 W Proofs going for under $800 lately. I hope no one is buying these to flip........JMO

You're right, it is very difficult to find.
I found it by doing a search on the PCGS site for First Strike.
speaking of which.. why doesn't PCGS do First Strike labels at the shows at which they have submission tables?.. i called'em on Friday and asked about submitting my sealed Platinum set at the February Long Beach show and they told me i could do dat, and it would qualify for the double meat and cheese FS / Annivesary labels, but i couldn't do same-day walk-through and pick'em back up at the show.. they'd have to mail the slabs back to me.. why don't they make the FS labels at shows?.. or did the CS rep i spoke with not know what she's talking about?.. it's just a printed piece of paper..

30 days for mint return, "unlimited" for first strike if left in sealed box and FStrike is requested
First Strike is not proper coin terminology which is why they have an explanation on the back of the slab.
It's a "game" made possible by the mint's generous 30 day no questions asked return policy and TPG's like PCGS and NGC..you will NOT see it going away.

If shipped from the Mint within the first 30 days and you leave the set sealed in the Mint shipping box (which is required anyway to get the 10th anniversary designation on both coins), it will qualify indefinitely for the First StrikeSM -10th anniversary designation.

i asked PCGS that question last week.. i was told the that regardless of when you submit them, the 30 day period to get the FS label applies from the date the Mint shipped them.. if yours have a ship date within the first 30 days, as long as you keep that box sealed.. they qualify, even if you submit them a year from now.. that's what PCGS told me.. i specifically asked them "is the 30 days based on the Mint's ship date, no matter when i submit them, or do i have to submit them within 30 days of when the Mint shipped them to me?" and i was told "as long as the sealed package is dated as having been shipped to you during the first 30 days the Mint shipped the sets, then it doesn't matter when you submit them"..

if you've never been to one of the Long Beach Coin and Stamp shows.. you're in for quite an experience.. kind of like in "Forbidden Planet" when Doctor Morbius takes Leslie Nielsen and Warren Stevens down into the guts of the 800 cubic miles of the Krell machinery.. imagine a single room big enough to drive tractor-trailers around in figure eights without touching the walls.. a room you could literally hang zeppelins in.. over a thousand dealers.. tables spread out as far as you can see.. more coins than you've ever seen in one place in your life.. over a billion DollErs worth in one room.. it's always an overwhelming experience, for me, and total sensory overload for a coin collector who has never been to a show of that size.. dealer cases filled with stacks and stacks and endless stacks of just about anything you could possibly lust for.. the rarest of the rare, the most common of the common, and everything in-between.. all the big name auction houses are there.. all the slabbers are there, all the national dealers are there.. and there are tons of free SWAG you can pick up and lug around with you to take home.. NGC is usually good for some cool freebies such as sample slabs, logo coffee mugs, mouse mats, an such.. (PCGS rarely has any free SWAG).. free sample issues of all the Numismatic publications, literature everywhere, coin collecting supplies of every description (all of it sold with no sales tax).. you could walk into that room and spend a few million bucks without breaking a sweat if you wanted to..
then there's a stamp section, and a World Coin section, if you're into that.. even a smattering of jewelry and other odds and ends, and at every show i've been to, a very small area for collectors of, of all things, Orange crate labels, stock certificates, old maps, postcards.. lots of exonumia.. the show is held three times a year and if memory serves, at one of their three yearly shows, The Mint shows up and sells its current products, and at another, the B.E.P. is there selling its paper money, and usually has a display of such things as $10,000 and $100,000 bills..
you can plunk yourself down at Fred Weinberg's table and see some a couple of cases of nothing but error coins.. some of them truly astonishing..
dealers will take your personal check, genrally speaking, with no holding period.. asking only for your driver's license, or sometimes asking for no form of ID at all.. in fact more of them take checks than plastic..
it's really quite a mind-bending experience if you've never gone.. just be mindful of your wallet (as you would in, say, a casino or on a public bus).. and walking alone through the parking structure underneath..

Yes, thank you. I haven't actively collected since high school, about 25 years ago, other than buying coins from the mint. Back then I bought all my coins from one shop and went to only one show, but I was so overwhelmed (and poor) that I didn't buy anything. I'm finally in a position where I can afford to buy a few nice coins, but my collection never really had any specific direction. I really like Bust and Seated coins. I don't own anything in a slab and don't look forward to it, but is seems that is how it is done these days.
Do you have to be a PCGS member to have coins graded at a show?

Just a quick question but is it a good idea to ship these Priority Mail 2-3 day? Shouldn't these ship registered mail? I have always shipped higher end stuff with priority but thought there was a risk with paypal.
Poor guy, he even sent it in express so for an extra $20/coin he found out he had bullion value. That's why I sent mine in regular, save $40 in total ... plus I'm just going to keep them in my collection anyways, not for flipping.
Good point Casman. If an item doesn't sell the first time you list it, try to change the item Title to use different keyword descriptors. I have found that sometimes improves results dramatically. However with this auction already north of $3000 he must be doing something right!

Miles, on the other hand....why would buyer pay over Mint pricing + $25 S&H??
Only thing I can think of, is the buyer already bought his one alloted set from the Mint.
Why not just have a friend or family member buy from the Mint and reimburse???
I just don't get the mentality of some coin buyers.
