that's the "Amos Advantage" oak single slab box with window.. and little magnets in the lid.. nice boxes.. i bought one to keep on the coffee table and rotate whatever my current favorite slab is in and out of it.. they're about $16.00 or so if you're a CW subscriber.. they also make them that hold 2, 3, and 4 slabs.. the funny thing is that wood slab box comes in a black cardboard box so you gotta take the box outta the box.. the version of the Amos box withOUT the window in the lid is actually more expensive..

amosadvantage.com or huge ads in every issue of CW..

Looks like the current lofty price of platinum is the best thing that could have happened for us PR69 guys holding the plat. RP bag!!!

If current mintage numbers stay under 18,000....there could be a nice advance in price on this issue in 2009.

    Anyone agree????

    Hi..

well, Platinum has been all over the place in the past month, from a low of under $1900/oz to a high of nearly $2300/oz.. i've watched it take leaps and falls of $100/oz and more in a single day, from one day to the next.. i'm holding the 10nd Anniversary set slabbed by PCGS as PR69DCAM for the regular Proof, and PR70 for the Reverse Proof.. i'm waiting to see what the Mint does vis-a-vis either putting the set back on sale at a much (i assume).. higher price than the original $1949.95 price, or yanking it altogether and saying that's it.. leaving the set Mintage at a little over 17,000 sets, which i hope they'll do..

what's interesting to me, anyway, is i've been watching the PCGS Price guide and as Platinum rises and falls, generally speaking, the values for PCGS slabs in their Price guide rise and fall EXCEPT for these two coins.. which have remained unchanged.. PR69DCAM for the regular Proof - $1285.00.. PR70 for the Reverse Proof - $2000.00..

Platinum goes up, you see almost every coin in that section of their Price guide go "green" indicating a rise in value.. Platinum goes down, you see almsot every coin go "red" indicating a drop in value.. literally from day to day.. but the two coins in the set have remained listed in black, indicating NO change, consistantly, for many weeks..

if i could actually GET those prices if i sold the pair of slabs plus the wood box and the outer boxes, i'd realize a profit in excess of $1200.00.. but the unknown factor at play here is what the Mint's gonna do, and that blurb at the bottom of their sales page about taking them off-sale due to the volatile price of Platinum hasn't changed since they TOOK them off-sale nearly two months ago.. i've sold many coins too soon and missed out on quite a profit, like the 2000-W BiMetallics.. a few others i've sold too late.. but as far as i can remember, i've NEVER done worse than break even, and more often than not, turn a nice profit if i can resist and hold onto them long enough.. so i'm holding these, as i'm not a Platinum collector, and my sole purpose for buying this set was to get it slabbed and flip it, hopefully for double what i paid for it.. i don't think double is possible right now, but could be, depending on what Platinum does.. but the metal is so volatile in price, that by the time you list an auction while it's high, a week later when that auction ends, it can (and has) been $200 to $300/oz lower!.. then you sell it, ship it, and the next day, it jumps back up again.. and out comes the boot to kick yerself in the butt.. so for now.. i hold..

I respectfully disagree. While the RP will remain a special issue, the mintage figures will trump all else. There are too many other Plats with substantially lower mintages to warrant much of a premium for either of the coins in the Anniversary Set. When the rising price of platinum bails out those who bought multiples, they should not look that gift horse in the mouth, imo.

Timing is always tough... I ended up with RP PR70DC and PR69DC. I sold for $2600 total, and used the proceeds to acquire a 1/4oz 2007-W Plat Unc. - basically for free (which just graded MS69). I may have missed out on some profits, but I ended up with 1/4oz for nothing. Can't beat that.

Wow you must have sold just before me. I think I got around $2300 for the same combo. I just can't tie funds up in something like this and got out. After shipping, grading fees, ebay fees, paypal fees, I think I just about broke even. image
  • The First StrikeSM 70 sets were getting ~4,000+ when first offered. With the uncertity of the remaing sets that have not been sold, the forcast of incresing intrinsic cost of platinum and the limited population of the First StrikeSM sets (which none of the remaining unsold or opened sets qualify for), IMO the market value of the perfect 70 sets will gradually increse in the short term until it reaches the levels when they were first offered. Where it goes from there depends on how short a supply is available and where the metal stands in terms of intrinsic value.

    FLBuffalo,

How do you think the RP PR69 First Strike will fare if the Mint suspends any further sales?

Haven't seen you around here for a while.

    Good to see you posting.
  • Good to be back. It's nice to take a break and take in some fresh air image IMO, as with 90% of ultra-modern bullion issues, 69's will be closely tied to the metal value with a small premium for the First StrikeSM designation. Since the First StrikeSM 10th anniversay platinum sets are the most desirable of the First StrikeSM 2007-W Proof APE issues in a 69, I would hold on to any First StrikeSM anniversary sets if you don't need the money.

    I can hold for now.

Good to be back. It's nice to take a break and take in some fresh air

Glad to have you back, the modern crap threads need a shot in the arm....and you are the man!!! image

Let's see, buy a fresh new 10th Anniversary set from the Mint for $2649.95 or...........................

..........Buy a PCGS graded MS69FS set for $2300.00???? image

    eBay Link

footnote: I don't think there have been any more than maybe 100 sets bought from the Mint once the price went from $2050 to $2650.

I''m still sitting on my MS69FS PCGS set.....what to do, what to do???? image
  • I sold one of my two sets (69/69 FS) about two months ago. I still have one set that I am going to keep because I like it (70RP/69PR FS).

i think ya meant PRxx not MSxx..

you're talkin' about the Platinum set, right?.. i'm still sitting on mine.. PR69DCAM on the regular Proof, and PR70 on the Reverse Proof.. both FS.. i haven't been keeping Track of them lately.. so i don't know what that pair would go for.. should i sell them as a pair with the fancy schmancy wood box.. or if i'd get more selling them separately, and just keep the fancy schmancy wood box..

but.. i wouldn't even think about selling them until the Mint yanks them off sale.. and when's that gonna be?.. who is buying them from the Mint any more since they jacked up the price to such a ridiculous level?.. no wonder they're hardly selling any at all.. Platinum shoots up to nearly $2300/oz, then falls back to $19xx/oz, then back to $20xx/oz.. it's all over the place, but as always, when the Mint raises the price on something, they NEVER lower it again.. so they're just gonna sit here watching teevee with me until some future date.. when the Mint stops selling them altogether.. i'll think about it..

i don't know if you get NN's emailed newsletters.. i do.. and recently, Editor-in-Chief Dave Harper asked the question "should the US Mint produce a Palladium coin?".. (every newsletter has a poll).. the overwhelming response was

    image

just imagine if they decided to make a Rhodium coin.. Rhodium is well over $9000.00/oz.. at that insane metal price, they'd have to make a coin you'd need tweezers to pick up unless they made a half oz. or full oz. coin and you were filthy stinking rich.. and could hack the price.. if they sell two coins that are an oz. of Platinum worth about $2000.00 for $2700.00, i can't even imagine how much they'd sell a 1 oz. coin made out of Rhodium..

i think i only own one thing that has any Rhodium in it.. at least only one thing i know for sure does.. the big fat classic Montblanc 149 fountain pen.. you know the one, i'm sure.. the big bruiser King of fountain pens they've been making basically unchanged for decades.. the pen that they sign treaties with image .. bought it years ago and i'm so paranoid about carrying it around, that i never carry it around.. it lives in my safe, and i take it out once in a while and fondle it and put it away.. never know when i might have to sign a treaty.. heh.. retail price new in a store is $600.00 these days.. its nib is Gold and Platinum, but the actual writing tip, the only part that actually touches paper.. is a leeeeeeeeeeeeeetle tiny wedge of Rhodium they weld onto the nib through a process i can't even imagine how it's done..
