Great Giff Ryan, very nicely centered. Man the vintage looks great in an SGC holder! What do they call that pose again, that heisman leg in air arm extended thing. I saw Madden on MNF once do that pose and name it, cant remember. He was winded after doing it
Great looking Johnny U, 57 topps is one of my favorite sets. I have alot of favorite sets now that I think about it
Mike (Couldabeena10), great odd ball stuff. Those FB exhibits are great. First time I've ever seen the Canadien Kelloggs issue too. Those '60's helmets are great too with the old logo's.

That's a nice bit of trivia, Rich. Did you discover that yourself, or is it well-known and I'm just in the dark again? Is it the case with all 1956 Topps cards from vending and from wax packs?
2 more 69s for the set build, puts me at just over 93%
Got these from carew4me, it also completes my 69 Packers set all in 8
with what I have incoming I am down to 16 cards to finish the set. I only have one card to upgrade a George Blanda that is PSA 7. All I have to do now is find the cards and be able to fund all the purchases once I do.

Congrats, Ryan! All the vintage graded sets I am working on have slowed to an absolute crawl with none of them higher than 60% complete and I decided to go with PSA because there are simply more graded examples out there. With you deciding on SGC for your 1948 Bowman set, hitting 50% in less than a year is even more impressive! They do look awesome in those dark holders. How many have you had graded, be they cross-overs or just submitted raw?
<< <i>Great cards guys! Here's a little more vintage football spice for everyone! Can you name and date all of the following issues? Some are easy .... a couple may stump you. >>
Well crud, I hit quote to submit my guesses, but the JPG names told all...
I knew the Kerger, Wheaties, Bowmans (of course), and Kelloggs. I have never seen the Maroons, KDKA Steelers, or the team Stancraft packs though. The one I was really curious about was the Graham and Namath "unknowns"... nice cards and I wanted to take a look at the checklist to see if it is a set I might keep in mind for the future. If anyone has any info on these, please share it.
Thanks guys! Deciding to build in SGC was my preferred choice...but it has made it much more challenging. Which is a GOOD thing! I would be broke if I didn't. Whenever a SGC example that I need comes up on ebay...which isn't often...I tend to bid very aggressively. This has caused me to overpay in some cases, but I have underpaid many times as well. Of the 54 cards that I have..all are graded...50 SGC and 4 PSA. Actually I am waiting for 3 more SGC graded ones to arrive..so its 57 cards, 53 are SGC. Most have been bought already holdered in SGC slabs. Before deciding to build the set, I had most of the major cards already in either PSA or SGC. I crossed about 10 PSA's over. I try to resist the urge to buy the PSA to avoid the crossover fees...but every now and then, I pick one up if it is a low pop card or if the price is right. All in all, of the 57....only crossed or have to cross about 15 cards.

Hey, no fair peeking at my jpg scan names!
I figured the 1938 Kerger's Varsitee cards set might be one of the stumpers, as I haven't seen them come up for sale in quite a while. BTW, if anyone has any singles of them ... I'd love to see some scans of the card fronts. My deck is still sealed, and I've only seen a couple of the individual card fronts.
The red and white "Pottsville Maroons" set you asked about was printed in 1977 by the estate of Joseph C. Zacko, Sr. in Pottsville, PA. It's a neat little 18 card tribute set that's dedicated to the NFL Pottsville Maroons team that unjustly had the 1925 Championship game stolen from them by an unfair league ruling. If anyone's not familiar with the controversy, here's the basic story (cut, pasted, and condensed from several locations) ......
"For 82 years the town of Pottsville, PA has been fighting a David and Goliath battle with the NFL to get its title back. The Journal of Sports History has called the controversy --- "one of the greatest injustices in NFL history." In 1925, Pottsville, PA, a small coal-mining town 90 miles northwest of Philadelphia, did the unthinkable and dominated the NFL in its inaugural season. At the time the Philadelphia Inquirer called the Maroons "The Perfect Football Machine."
On Dec. 6, 1925, the Pottsville Maroons (9-2 record) beat the Chicago Cardinals (9-1-1 record) at Comiskey Park by a score of 21-7, in what was supposed to be the NFL championship game.
At the time, the NFL was struggling to get off the ground, and college football was king. The Saturday after their Championship win the Pottsville Maroons played the Notre Dame All Stars (featuring the famed Four Horsemen) in a "Pro's -vs- College" exhibition game in Philadelphia. Experts believed the fledgling NFL was still decades away from competing with college football. But on a last-second field goal the Maroons helped legitimize the NFL by beating Notre Dame 9-7.
The Frankford Yellow Jackets, the team that would later become the Eagles, protested to the NFL saying the Maroons were violating their "territory." (The Maroons had beaten the Yellow Jackets, 49-0, to earn the right to play Notre Dame at Shibe Park.) Although no territory rule was ever produced and the Maroons had affidavits from men who witnessed the phone conversation in which the Maroons' owner was granted permission to play the game from the league, the NFL upheld the protest and suspended the Maroons, stripping them of their Championship title.
After the forfeiture of Pottsville's championship game, the current NFL Director (Joe Carr), ordered the Chicago Cards to schedule two extra games to decide the Championship ... which they did, against weak and already half disbanded teams. Both extra games were farcical with Chicago being an easy winner, finishing the season with an 11-2-1 record, and afterwards being referred too as the 1925 League Champions."
It's an interesting slice of early NFL history and there's a ton of websites about it. There's even an on going "on-line petition" that's still trying to persuade the NFL to overturn the old ruling, give the Pottsville Maroons back their 1925 title and consider a couple of their player's for enshrinement in the HOF. There's a couple of books out on the subject (David Fleming's; "Breaker Boys: The NFL's Greatest Team and the Stolen 1925 Championship" (ESPN Books). I haven't read it yet, but it's on my short list of books to read.

To answer your other question ... that set is known as the "1989 TV-4 NFL Quarterbacks". (I just had it marked as unknown because I couldn't remember the year/info when I was naming the scan). It's a 20 card set that was distributed by a London, England TV station (Channel 4) to help promote the NFL back when we started playing pre-season games over there. It has 20 of the greatest QB's to ever play the game, and the drawings are by an artist named J. C. Ford. It's a very inexpensive set, and you can usually find the singles listed for under $5. I personally think it's a great looking little set. The checklist consists of:
1) Dutch Clark 2) Sammy Baugh 3) Bob Waterfield 4) Sid Luckman 5) Otto Graham 6) Bobby Layne 7) Norm Van Broklin 8) George Blanda 9) Y.A. Tittle 10) Johhny Unitas 11) Bart Starr 12) Sonny Jurgensen 13) Joe Namath 14) Fran Tarkenton 15) Roger Staubach 16) Terry Bradshaw 17) Dan Fouts 18) Joe Montana 19) John Elway 20) Dan Marino
<< <i>Nice job on the BRONK! That is a sweeet card, congratulations on landing it. After you finish the set whats next? >>
