Be sure to post the Nagurski PSA 6 when you get it in. >>
Thanks.........I guess I can never for sure say never...but I seriously doubt that I will ever own a Chicle Nagurski in a 6! I may someday hope for a 3-4...but that is doubtful as well.
Hey Ryan, I have had those for a little while I just been too busy to scan ect.. I told you i am back Im just not going after 8's and playing the High grade game anymore, I tried the PSA 5 thing for a bit but decided I want to at least have some room for resale value on my collection so it looks like PSA 7 again.
Nice '51's, are you doing the set in PSA or an SGC/PSA mix?
Ryan, fine-looking 1951 Demao and Kalmanir. I mean really, with 1951 Bowman, how can one go wrong? They all present well. Best wishes on a replacement '51 Lavelli. I know that PSA 8s command a premium due to their low POP in that grade.
Paul, thanks for sharing more scans. It's funny- I don't know that I had ever seen a scan of a 1953 Bowman Tom Fears before. -Keith
Hey gang I picked up a set of 51 Bowman a couple of weeks ago. I sent in about 50 for grading. I expect to get back anywhere from PSA 6's to PSA 9's (not many). I will post here before I put them on ebay and see if there is any interest.

Definately PM me, Im looking for Otto Graham & Tony Canadeo.
I've spent a long time looking for this one and the it was well worth the wait. Mac Speedie suffers the curse of being on the great Browns squads that already have Graham, Groza, Motley, Lavelli and company in the Hall. Sadly, the scan doesn't do this card justice. It's all original and blows away any of the higher grade cards I've got from this set. A travesty if it ends up in a PSA 8, I'm pretty confident that it should will end up residing in a PSA 9. Centered a little off top to bottom with a bit of tilt and the slightest hint of wear on the upper right corner are the only drawbacks...
Scott, very nice Mac you got! I hope you get the elusive PSA 9 I know your hoping for, you are spot on about Mr. Speedie I never heard of him until awhile ago when Ryan Posted a scan of his '51 card.
I immediately google a player when I see a scan or hear about him for the first time, you are correct he was in tough company to be recognized the way he should have been.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Being a Clevelander I grew up hearing stories about the 40's/50's Browns and their history(thank God we have a strong history...because the present sucks!) I guess I take it for granted that everyone knows about guys like Mac Speedie. I agree with you Scott, Speedie suffers from being on a great team with so many HOFers that he probably won't ever get in. He came close several times....being the Senior Committee candidate. I also have heard that he shunned Paul Brown, went to Canada to play which hurt him "politically." It also hurt him stats wise because his AAFC years and CFL stats don't count...but statistically he ranks amongst the all-time great receivers. I have posted before about the book "The Best Show on Earth:The 1946-1955 Browns" which provides a strong argument that Speedie should be in the Hall. I HIGHLY recommend the book to all vintage football fans.
Fiveniner, that's cool that you consider collecting the early Bowman Football once your 1959 project has been satisfied. Early Bowman are easily a personal favorite of mine; true icons of the early game replete with genuine artistry.
Here's a card that I picked up this year. I doesn't belong to any Registry that I currently pursue; I just like the look of it. The Rams colors are pleasing and it looks like "Crazylegs" Hirsch is living up to his name with a frantic cartoonish scramble:
Interesting about the Leafs, it seems that there are more of the 49's? I know the 48's are much more expensive not just the Rookies either..
Strange that they didnt make some adjustments to the front of the card for 1949, seems like they were lazy or something to keep the same look 2 years in a row.
Got the grades for a recent submission and got HAMMERED!!! The Mac Speedie graded a PSA 7 and will be cracked and resubbed as soon as it returns. I could've lived with a PSA 8, but a PSA 7 is an insult to that card. Several others from the era got crushed, including a few '48 Leafs that were EX to EX/MT or better. Looking at the grades, all of the Philly cards ('65-'67) were graded very leniently, but the pre-1955 stuff got destroyed except for the one '48 Magic Photo Bednarik that I expected a PSA 4 on and got a PSA 7. Not much love for the vintage! At least there will be some plastic to get recycled next week...

Sorry you got hammered on the grades Scott, honestly Im starting to compare the grading game to NFL games... There is no rhyme or reason behind any outcome-anything is possible

I've got a really good handle on it, but as you say, sometimes a grader sees "illegal contact to the quarterback" when the defender doesn't even touch him... I'll just crack and split them up on a couple of other subs and they'll end up where they should've been from the get-go. It'll just cost more and take a little extra time.
I've changed my collecting habits a bit, and recently I've been picking up obscure sets just to add them to my gallery site. My latest buy was the 1955 49ers Team Issue. They're photos, really, not cards, but I really like them. About half of the players are new to me: as far as I know, they don't appear on cards.
I wrote a blog article on the set, so I won't repeat all that here. If you're interested, here's a link.
58's with great gloss and color are hard to beat. I especially like the lime green jello Starr. That set is so hard to put together NM with the o/c, print snow, poor paper, etc. But IMO its worth it.
Kiss me once, shame on you. Kiss me twice.....let's party.
That Van Buren looks like a solid PSA 4 and a PSA 5 on a lenient day. Very similar to the White I sent out to you this morning... Good luck with the resub.
Thanks Otw, I was really trying to get that Layne Red pants from you too!! Thats a very nice card for being a 1. Thanks for the White..hes a toughy for some reason.

Jake:
Sorry to be such a hardazz on the prices for those variations, but some of them are a pain and I'm in no rush to sell them at much of a discount. Figure if they don't sell, they're great fodder for trading as I try to finish the Master Set or swap for some of the other variations (listed and unlisted).
<< <i>No problem Scott I completely understand and I still may try and take the Layne off your hands if no one else does. You have some great 48's there. >>
Thanks. Those are dupes as I've been constantly upgrading. Waiting for a few old flips to get relabeled with the variations and my Master Set should be close to 85% complete.
Good luck with your set! And keep an eye out as I continue to upgrade, I'll have more to sell (or try to sell).

<< <i>Hey are there any differences between the 48 & 49 Leafs? >>
Backs on 48's are creme colored.....49's are gray. Numbers and back print is different too. 49's are skip numbered and only 49 cards.

Just the numbering and the card stock (and the 1949 copyright notation on the reverse)... And that the '49 set is half the size and skip-numbered.

Gosh, I love 1958 Topps FB; I could look at them all day. I've got one or two of those on my to-do list.
Bob Lemke
Incase you didnt notice we have another Football thread over in the set registry forum, some guys have recently posted some very nice 48 Leafs.
Not realy card-related, but worth a bump to show you this neat artwork from the August, 1971, issue of Playboy, from their first Pro Football Preview.
I did a bit in my blog, linked below.
<< <i>Nice card...vintage Rams are always the best! >>
Yup for about 10-12 years, they were the only team with logo's on their helmets.
I apoligize for not doing my part..
