    I worked up another 1968 style card . . .

It's amazing that Kramer had a 1959 "rookie" card and then nothing for years.

  • PowderedH2OPowderedH2O Posts: 2,443 ✭✭
It's even more amazing that in 1969 (the year he retired) Kramer was named to the NFL's All-Time Team for the 50th Anniversary of the league, yet has yet to be enshrined to the Pro Football Hall of Fame even though a number of linemen from before 1969 that were NOT selected ARE in the Hall. Go figure.

Interesting article on Bullet Bill Dudley. Said he scored in 9 of the 10 possible ways of scoring in football. Try to give it a guess before reading the article...extra credit if you identify the 10th way of scoring, the only score that Dudley did not accomplish.

Hey Ryan! I see no problem with you liguidating your 60's & 70's cards, your a BigDaddyBOWMAN collector mainly- and Chicle collector as well image

I have been absent from this thread for awhile now, I still love Football & Football cards but it really took alot out of me when I dismantled my 52 set ( or attempt at the set I should say ) I did the right thing in my mind and believe it or not I regret it a little bit, I think after I sold those it was much easier to part with my other high grade cards and now I have a bunch of beautiful 5-6 grade stuff that I do cherish. The money isnt an issue its just that Im thinking long and hard before I continue to pursue stuff- I dont want to resell them down the road because I changed my mind AGAIN image

I think that Im going to finish plucking away at some more of my favorite Bowmans and a few Chicles- not sure when though.

    Great looking cards everyone!

Couldn't you add to that list 1) scoring on a blocked punt and 2) scoring on a blocked field goal attempt?
  • PowderedH2OPowderedH2O Posts: 2,443 ✭✭
Yep. And these days you could score on a 2-point conversion as well.

  • Well i would try to talk you out of selling off your collection , but you dont know me from a hole in the ground . That being said , there are certain
times when we have to make tough decisions . Although alot of us collect for the love of it , its nice when we can turn cardboard into cash when
there are no other logical solutions .

I do hope you dont have to liquidate the entire collection because you do have an outstanding collection . Good Luck

I picked up a 1906 postcard with a picture of the Carlisle Indian School football team - there were no names but after a little research I've done some identification - certain players I'm quite sure of, but others are more tentative - I'd be interested in anyone's suggestions.

Right now its a birdhouse...might be able to upsize to a doghouse soon! image

I have sold over $2,500 recently, and I gave my wife half of it and told her "no matter what I say...keep it for the house." So thats what we did..I spent half in new Bowmans and other half went to the house renovation fund.

Got to get this page back to page 1.

Sometimes you get a card in the mail and it just takes your breath away! This one did it for me. Its always special holding a Baugh in your hand for us football collectors (I wish it was a '48image). Picked it up for $115.00...surprised I got it for that PWCC often gets well above VCP on their auctions. It proves that patience can get you a great card for a good price.

    Thanks!

Good luck with the Van Brocklin...tough to get centered and ones that are seem to go for a premium. The Landry demands high $, but the rest are reasonable...losts of great second year cards of Graham, Fears, Tittle, Hirsch, Groza, Canadeo, etc.

Yea other than the Van Brocklin & Landry the other big ones in the set are affordable- funny thing is I like the Layne, Fears, Hirsch, Groza, much better than in the 52 set although the Van Brocklin & Tittle are not as nice IMO.

A number of questions I have for myself need to be answered before I embark such as condition, and if Im SERIOUSLY going to finish it and not bail like I did on my 52 set....

I will keep you guys informed!

Ryan- I been keeping a very low profile in the card world, no need to worry about competition from me image I will go after the ones you already have ( pinky swear image )

Im looking into a condo to purchase as well as a new car so I have alot on my plate right now, so if I do decide to do this it will be very slow and done on a budget.

I haven't had much to contribute to the forum in the way of vintage cards, but I wanted to share this 1943 program cover - it just jumps off the page, IMO - the paper on these wartime progams was not of the greatest quality, so they are not that easy to find in good shape. Below that are some college autographs recently acquired.

Some of those old logos on the vintage footballs are outstanding. What the heck is that thing on the Otto Graham card? A leprechaun?

The munchkin on the cards is a brownie, and it was an official team logo.
  • Paul, how about we both start the 1951 Bowman Football Set right now? We can track each other's progress, help each other, etc. (Kind of like you did with my '52 Bowman Large Football Set). We'll probably just end up in bidding wars. image I have a few cards to start with and can add slowly but steadily, starting with HOFers.

I plan to keep doing the '52 Large, and like the '51s for their fantastic design and that I believe there are few or no players with college uniforms on. The '51 Bowman also has perhaps all in one the most beautiful football card (and my favorite football card) ever produced in my opinion, appearing below.

BTW, I also added two cards to my '52 Bowman Large Registry in the last week. 7s & 7.5s are nice; still waiting for 8s! -Keith

One thing I wanted to mention in this thread ( without being accused of blasphemy ) is the 2009 Topps Magic cards image I know I know its modern but they have a really nice "vintage feel" to them like the Heritage issues for the baseball guys, the cards depict all the guys in their college unis which Im a big fan of, Im hoping that they start a run of the 1950's Bowman retro look like they are doing with baseball. Kinda fun to put together a set in a binder if you need a break from scouring ebay for vintage..

Here is what they look like-

    Howdy Paul..Nice 51's. Hirsch is a beaut!

I got my recent submission back from SGC today using their $5 football special. (back in 12 days if anyone is curious)

very mixed results...here are the highlights..

    The ONLY bump...from PSA 7 to a SGC 8
    image

an even cross PSA 8 to SGC 8
    image

    another even cross...
    image

    now the lowlights..
a full grade drop PSA 7 to SGC 6
    image

and finally the kick in the balls...
    a 2 grade drop. PSA 6 to SGC 4
    image

I submitted a bunch more 51 commons for crossover with same results all straight or drops.

I also submitted a bunch of raw exhibits that SGC totally annihilated. I will post those later.

I am usually a big proponant of SGC, but this submission worries me...I hope that SGC isnt resorting to the tactics of a certain other grading company hoping that I will resub some of these again.

a half grade drop..PSA 8 to SGC 7.5..this one hurts too!

    The best new arrival today...

Geez Ryan that sucks about the poor results with your crossover. Sorry it worked out like that, still VERY nice cards. The canadeo is a favorite of mine which Im searching for as we speak however I am not finding a decent centered copy image

  • mcolney1mcolney1 Posts: 981 ✭✭✭
Tough one Ryan. I hope you have better luck next time.

50 & 51 Bowman with their small size seem to present well even if they aren't centered very well. I've placed some bids on some high grade OC rookies lately, underbidder each time, ugh!, that present well when OC top to bottom. 53 & 54 Bowman don't show well OC, the boards are too big and crisp. The 55's with light background I will pick up OC because its so hard to distinguish where the picture ends and the boarder begins. Lots of OC 55 bargains to be had. Will scan some this weekend. Tony
