Figured I might as well add my recent pickups too. Really happy about the Bulldog Turner...HOFer in PSA 7 for under $50 delivered! I thought of you, BigDaddy, when I bought it.
<< <i>Looks like a TON of great looking 51's, everyone!

Nice pick-ups! The 51 Bowman Bulldog Turner is one of my favs..not that you couldn't tell by my avatar
There sure are some nicely-presented cards above. Thanks for sharing them to all.
I guess there will be more demand going forward for high grade 1950 and 1951 Bowman Football cards as I just started these sets over the weekend. Both issues are such beauties along with the '52s. The Nearmint blog accurately and succinctly points out that the more intricate logos of the '50s is one likely reason that 1951 Bowmans had to use such large logos in order to show the detail. This almost overpowers some card designs. It helps in a lot of places too, like with the cool Rams logo.
BDB, judging from our Registry Sets, it looks like we have interest in a lot of the same vintage issues. I'm glad that you at least got your '51 Canadeo to "crossover bump" if you will. Your cards sure present nicely in those SGC holders.

You have some great cards! I highly reccomend that you stay away from the 51 Bowman..if you know what's good for ya?
Bottom line is YOU GUYS are sucking me back in. Sure I was doing fine snagging cheap nicely centered 5's & 6's going about my bussiness and I get this thread popping again and now Im back on the hunt for not only nicely centered 5's and 6's but looking for "Special" cards in the higher grades
Someone is getting a major itch to finish some sets...
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
Paul, I'm glad you're getting swept up in the fun! BDB, don't mind Joe. He has nothing better to write while his subservient army of electrical apprentices are out doing all his work for him. Meanwhile, he golfs while hammering me on every Registry that we mutually belong to.
Bottom line - vintage football appears severely undervalued with it's low POP and swelling interest. That coupled with the recession has propelled me to buy, buy, buy. Dare I say it? - This week I even landed a PSA 8 copy of what looks like BDB's avatar.
"Outro": one of the best-looking results in the history of the confluence of ink and papyrus:
<< <i>Im just curious when my old friend Barry is going to start hustling on Ebay for some '51 Bowmans and AA's again >>
I've been scouting but haven't found anything I like....

----------------------------------- That is one beautiful Van Brocklin..it would look great in the SGC holder
I bid on that Bulldog Turner too...can't help it...the OCD kicks in.. one wasn't enough, so I tried having two..but you had deeper pockets..congrats on the great pick-up.
BDB, you're right. The '51 Bulldog Turner is very attractive.
Going back to Saturday and the '51 Woodley Lewis Paul displayed - this is one of the very few '51 Bowmans I have seen with a "tight luminescent aura" around the player's body, much like all the '55 Bowmans have. Note that the '51 Van Brocklin has more of a "faded" aura.
Also - BDB, I'm cool with SGC. In fact, check the link below to my SGC Registry Set in order to see my SGC-graded '51 Van Brocklin.
The background color on the Geri is compelling and maybe unlike that of any card I've seen.
The bright rays behind Carpenter almost seem to want to elevate him to a devine being! The tacky Browns leprechaun logo made it imperative that I include the word "almost" in the previous sentence.
BDB, you seem to be able to immediately roll out the scans of cards that fit any themed description - great!
As for the tattered '53 Tittle, if I let you get it then you definitely owe me a favor...
Personally I will take a nice background like this over a background of just color, dont get me wrong they are nice but dont compare to a "natural" setting..
The above only reaffirms what I believed earlier: if the early to mid '50s weren't The Golden Age Of Football, then they were certainly The Golden Age Of Football Cards. Terrific stuff! Thanks to Paul and others for the posts.
AUPT, I've liked seeing your '55 Topps All-American J-Rob and '55 Bowman Otto Graham and other "cards that were never cards" here and at Mike Denero's Vintage Sportscards. Thanks for contributing. I read some of your blog and appreciate that eastern Pennsylvania geography as I'm a displaced resident of those parts myself.
Here's a post of one of my 1951 Bowmans that rolled in recently (scan lacks sharpness, I have a new scanner on the way). It mirrors the avatar of a favorite thread poster. It also shows Clyde with a beautiful part in his hair.
Nice Graham Ryan, very nice. Honorable mention, keiths bulldog- very well centered my friend
some Exhibits I picked up from the Shouldabeen yard sale recently. Always nice to to a deal with a buddy and keep great cards in the family. Thanks again Mike!
Nice stuff, Paul! You're in a great, great niche with the early '50s Bowman issues.
Joe, thanks for adding your Exhibits. They look cool to me for two reasons - I haven't seen them before and they depict two players of high popularity. Terrific.
Hey guys! I have been MIA for about the last 3-4 weeks...crazy busy with work, family, and house renovations. I'll post some picks of the house renovations in the picture sharing thread. My buys have really slowed the last month or so....but yes Paul, I have picked up a few goodies during this time period, a man can't be expected to go totally cold turkey!
Just call me BigDaddyChicle!
Welcome back to vintage football action Paul..glad to see you lighting up the screen with some real cardboard gems!
Nice Chicles!!! Good to see you posting some serious cards again, I knewthere would still be some banner maildays in your house even when you were busy doing renovations!
Great photo. They must have used temporary professional goal posts for their games. Unusually seeing two sets of posts. I really miss the days of the NFL (AAFC) with the posts on the goal line.
Collecting Topps, Philadelphia and Kellogg's from 1964-1989
<< <i>Cool picture. Motley was a BEAST. Did you ever notice he seems to dwarf his cards? It's like he can barely fit him on them. >>
Agreed! Especially his 1950 card!!
Tell ya what it is an absolute tragedy that he was only on 3 cards, '50, '51 & '53. I would have loved to see what a '52 Bowman large Motley would have looked like or '48 & '49 Leaf as well

<< <i>Hey Ryan! Yea I dont consider those exhibits "Cards", very nice for sure but more along the lines of a photo.
Thanks for the pic though >>
Ahh...Perk...Don't let semantics get in the way of the enjoyment of cardboard!
The exhibit "cards" are some of my favs!
Cool Madden creation! Geez! He looked 70 even in his prime! Paul...the Motley pic is cool...I would have hated to be the 150 pound DB having to try to bring that load down!
