Did you cherry the 22-s unattributed?
If so, that's a great cherry!!! I find it very tough to cherry ddo's and tdr's. Congrats.
  • Thanks. Looks like you've found some nice one's too... I did not cherry it but the premium I pd was well worth it.

    [rant]

It's a frickin' coin forum, and people beatch about non-coin threads, so I post a thread with a coin... And get like 3 posts. Why frickin' bother with coin posts? In the end, most people on the board would rather whine about eBay or USPS or PayPal. So I'll copy the post here.

    [/rant]

<< <i>I like this coin mostly because there is so much going on with it. The 7 in the date is very strongly doubled, along with the stars left of the date. The A1c reverse is similarly full of interesting stuff.

ANACS calls it an MS64; I like it as a strong 63 - but there are counter wheel marks (I think) on the obverse. Tell me if they are something else - that was my best guess.

It's a problem coin. Rim nicks, a little corrosion, and toned black. But it was a VAM-9 and I couldn't just leave it there. I know there are collectors out there who could use the coin but don't have a bunch of bucks to tie up in a nicer example. It was the only real dog in the bunch though. The oval O has some tape residue on the obverse which should come right off without disturbing the coin's surfaces.

I got this off ebay recently, but I don't know if the "e" in we is weak enough to be considered a VAM-1B2 instead of just VAM-1B? The "e" is still raised slightly above the surface of the coin.

    Cool.

I just got grades from across the street myself. They were a bit tough in the grades. I'll have to relook at the one I thought was an AU55 when it gets back.

    1880-O (VAM-11A) MS63 -- estimated MS63-MS64
    1882-CC (VAM-3B) MS62 -- estimated MS62
    1883-O VAM-36A MS62 -- estimated MS63
    1886 VAM-1A MS63 -- estimated MS63, no attribution; they don't know die pair #2 I guess
    1890 VAM-25A No Grade
    1901 VF30 -- estimated VF30 (didn't agree with my attribution, VAM-5)
    1901 VAM-5 XF45 -- estimated AU55
    1921 VAM-3F3 MS61 -- estimated MS61-MS62

At the last Long Beach show I pulled a 1921-D VAM 1N "Unicorn" from a group of 24 raw BUs a dealer had, told him it was a variety I was looking for, and offered him more than double the per-coin price he was asking for the group. He smiled and handed me a flip almost before I got the words out of my mouth.

    PCGS graded it MS63. image

Bought at the MidAmerica show in Schaumburg last Friday:

2 1878-S VAM 18 "Spaghetti Wing" (VF, AU)
1884-O VAM 25 Misplaced date BU
    1878 VAM 81 ANACS 63DMPL
1878 8TF VAM 14.1 AU!!! Why, might you ask, did I buy this? The obverse is PL and the dies are not clashed. This is much rarer than the übercommon VAM 14.1A with the clashed 'n.'

Excellent choice. I have a PCGS AU55 and this is intentionally my Registry Set coin. Yes, the uber common does not interest me much. James has two, one in BU. I think yours is only the 4th or 5th that's
    turned up.

One day, they'll be worth a fortune (image

I reminded Mike Fey, this is the earliest die state found of the A1K reverse and the obverse here is PL, but the reverse is not. You can figure out the rest...
