  • Yup, I've also seen a couple mislabeled.

Hope everyone had a great X-Mas!
  • It went well, SS. Although, now I'm stuck with a completely useless Packard card :-( I'll get it reholdered next week, and see if anyone on the boards can use it.

In case anyone is wondering, I'll trade it straight-up for any '15 CJ PSA 3 common I don't already have.

That would be a great trade.....

E145-1's are 10X tougher than the E145-2 cards.
(because the E145-2 set was available through a "complete set mail in offer" along with in boxes, 1914s only came in boxes)
  • Enjoyed reading the story about you Andy in the latest SMR image
  • Thanks for your kind words. I'm glad you liked the story!

  • Since card acquisitions have slowed down, I thought I would post some companion pieces that I acquired during 2009. The 1914 Cracker Jack set has become a slight obsession for me.

This photo would date between 1912 and 1916/1918. It is impossible to pinpoint the date any further without more information.

    image

The is the interior of a general store from 1916-1918. On the left side, stacked on top of a display case are numerous boxes of Cracker Jack for sale. The second picture is detail of the boxes.

    image
    image

The scan is bad. This is an order form from 1915. Imagine, you could purchase a case (100 boxes) of Cracker Jack for $3.75. Each box sold for $.05. From the spring to early winter in 1915, the baseball card was the only available prize. A new prize (small tin toy) was introduced in the winter of 1915. Checkers was the main competition to Cracker Jack in 1915. Cracker Jack ended up purchasing Checkers.

    image

These are two RPPCs and a photo. The vending both (with boy holding soda bottle) RPPC would date between 1912 and 1922. The vending cart RPPC would date around 1915. The other boxes mixed in with Cracker Jack are Chums (another brand produced by Rueckheim.

  • Hey SS, I finally got your Cady to come in (second attempt), but that Luderus (previously an SGC 40) has come back as a 3.5 and now a 4.

After losing that Packard to the '14 set, I'm now up to 68 PSA 3 '15 CJs.

Let's not go two months without a post here - who's got some new pickups?? Here's one of mine that came yesterday...

  • Wow Scooter that is a beauty! I took a hard look at bidding on it but I'm happy with my PSA 5 example and I'm trying to focus on buying the few that I'm missing to get a complete set. That is my number 1 priority (followed by upgrading my low grade examples).

    Thanks for sharing!

Still looking for these cards in nice PSA 4+ condition (last ones I need of the "commons"):

Anthony (and others), any guesses as to why this card usually sells at such a premium over commons? Is it the horizontal pose? Peckinpaugh usually isn't sold at too much of a premium over other cards in sets (at least not that I am aware), but the CJ always seems to go for high prices whenever I see them offered.
  • Horizontal pose is one reason for sure.
  • What's wrong with the color on the card in this auction (150420802791)? Is this fading a common issue or perhaps a scanner problem?

It's a fake reprint. From what I've seen the reprints always have that same slighlty different tone that appears in that auction photo.
  • Hey Gang!

Well, I finally took the plunge and added my set to the Registry, although the task of scanning each of them will take me a bit longer to complete. Thanks again to those of you who've helped me build this set over the past two years, with a BIG shout-out to Rich.

Very nice! You're really coming along on the set!
  • Hello all. This thread is awesome. I am new to the CJ's, but am completely enthralled by the set. I am just finishing my 34 goudey and 40 play ball sets and am reaching for a new era and went straight to the CJ's. So does anyone have any low grade anything they'd want to sell? Im talking 1's and lower as long as the eye appeal is still somewhat there. Any advise on where to look and where not to look? I use ebay, the national and chicago shows typically. Thanks. This set is amazing.

    Sharma,

Welcome! It's by far my favorite set, I love the color and look of the set. Send me an email at rrockw@yahoo.com, I have some ones I could sell to you image Also it would help make communication easier if you set up your profile to accept PMs (private messages). I think you can do that in the profile section image

Sounds like you got he major bases covered, might want to check the Buy/Sell/Trade section here.

  • Ok the PM is on...not sure how I receive messages w/ it though. These cards are amazing. I need a nice place to start though.

  • I just got my first ungraded, raw, cj today...wow that paper is thin! I cant imagine what the 1914's are like. Are we talking tracing paper or what? Well its a nice card, especailly for $28, off a horrible picture on ebay that could probably score a 2. So in my first couple weeks i have amassed 15 commons and 1 minor start and i need a break, or at least my bank account does.

Wow that is a great start Sharma! Haha, yes this set can certainly have a negative effect on the wallet!

I picked up this Peckinpaugh last night - I already have a copy of the card (posted above on 2/24/10) but this one was a little too gorgeous for a PSA 2 and for just $70 I couldn't pass it up!

    image
  • Wow that card looks great...how did it get a 2? Im not much of a fan of graded cards, but most cjs appear to be slabbed.

Here's the back of the Peckinpaugh - I'm really curious to see this card in person to see what doesn't show up in the scan that knocked the grade down so much...

  • So whats the deal? You got that beautiful peckinpaugh mentioned earlier in the blog and now a 2 that looks like a 6? I think that second card needs to be passed along, you know, to another member.

  • Scout: Great progress on the set. It is a challenging set to build. Then, when you limit the cards to a 3, it becomes a very slow journey. I have learned that the journey is what I prefer. Good luck.

Scooter: That is a great looking Peck. I am curious to know the flaw.

Once card is in hand, I will post as to what is wrong with the PSA 2 Peckinpaugh. I'm as curious as anyone...
  • stormsurgestormsurge Posts: 858 ✭✭
I'd have to agree with Packman, the journey will be the best part I'm sure.
  • Packman and Rich are right on the money, as this has been an awesome, albeit slow-paced, journey. I know that limiting myself to 3's narrows the market even more, but there's little I can do about my own screwed-up internal compenents. One thing is for sure, picking up a new card for my set -- whether by crossover, raw puchase or pre-slabbed -- is way more significant to me than any other post-50s set I've ever collected. Just think: if this particular set only took about a year and $5,000 to put together, I probably would've traded it off by now and forgot all about it. Building this set has been like raising my kids, except I'll let 'em live under my roof after they've turned 18...LOL.

The PSA 2 Peckinpaugh came in the mail yesterday - looks just as perfect in person as it does in the scan. Not sure WTF the grader was thinking putting a 2 on this, but it will eventually find its way back to PSA (or SGC) for a second look...

PSA has blessed me with a couple more crossovers for my set, and after its second attempt, it looks as though the Milan card will never see the inside of a PSA slab. There's the tiniest bit of paper loss around his last name on the face card, but it was worth a try. It's now available if anyone needs it.

Rich, I've always enjoyed reading and contributing to this thread, and in an effort to keep things fresh, I'd like your blessing to provide you guys with a recap of the month's exploits, to include any acquisitions, crossover/reholder attempts, etc. I'll refer to it as "Scout's Monthly Update", with this being my inaugural post. Scans are to follow once these bad boys arrive, so please standby...

I was happy to get this 1914 Crawford off eBay last night - great eye appeal for a 30...

  • I never get tired of seeing a Cracker Jack. Nice card. It brings back memories because Crawford was the 2nd 1914 Cracker Jack that I bought for my set.

I was wondering if anybody wanted to trade. I have an extra 1914 Cracker Jack Harry Lord PSA 3. I wanted to see if anybody had any commons or stars (part trade) to trade. If interested, my set can be seen here: 1914 Cracker Jack Set

    Packman,

Nice Lord! I have some doubles in the 1915 set but none for the 1914. For those of you who may not know that card is only available in the 1914 set.
