Geez, Rich, nobody said that participation in this thread required a working knowledge of mathematical equations. Do you realize how many times I had to count my fingers to get to 111?! lol
Ok, folks, 111 down and 65 to go! For those of you who've seen my post in the BST forum, you'd know that I was offering $175/card for every PSA 3 CJ common you offered up for sale.
Always looking for 1915 Cracker Jacks in a uniform PSA 3 (NQ)
I wish I had some 1915's for you, that is a pretty generous offer. Good luck in your quest!
I am a 1914 man trying to climb the same mountain you are. I am at 132 and holding (for the time being). Any help in finding the following would be greatly appreciated:
Connie Mack Reb Russell Chief Bender Ty Cobb Chick Gandil Jay Cashion Honus Wagner Christy Matthewson Frank Schulte Ad Brennan Branch Rickey Eugene Packard
Have a big wallet and lots of patience Actually it's probably a good time to do it as there seems to have been a decent amount of activity in the set recently.
Hey goodtricks........stormsurge is correct with his advice.
I am one of a couple of people that I am aware of who are collecting the 1914 set. Many start the set, but few seem to finish. Presently I have 133 of the 144 cards.......11 to go.
There is a clear and definite price difference between the 1914 and 1915 cards, but even with unlimited financial resources that are some VERY difficult cards in the set to find. The Del Pratt card gets all the hype for being rare (and it is, with a combined population of 11 between SGC and PSA), but there are 43 cards in the set that have a combined (between SGC and PSA) population of 20 or fewer. It is ironic that the Matthewson card get a lot of press as being very difficult to find, but I would disagree. With a population of 35 (between SGC and PSA), there is only one card (Frank Chance) in the entire second half of the set (cards 73-144) with a greater population that the Matty card. So, one could make a very strong argument that each card in the entire second half of the set is harder to find than the Matty. Obviously the Matty is a pricey card and many people own it without collecting other cards in the set, but you will see a handful of them come up to auction each year. That is not the case with many of the cards in the set.
Please don't let this discourage you, as collecting the set has been very rewarding (so far) for me, but I mention this just so that your expectations are reasonable. In my opinion, figure out what type of cards you want to collect.
1. PSA or SGC or raw or any combination thereof. 2. Are you going to exclude "authentic", trimmed, marked, or otherwise altered cards. 3. Will you want only cards of a certain grade, or higher?
Obviously, depending on your answers to these questions, you might be limiting the population of cards you would consider, thus making the cards even harder to come by. Also, if you do not consider the caramel stains a charming part of the set, you will be making things even more difficult on yourself.
Please feel free to take a peek at my existing set at the following link:
I hope this has helped! Best of luck in your collecting endeavors and good luck pursuing the 14's (BTW, I have a couple of duplicates to sell if you are interested).
Barry thanks so much for the quick response and info! You have a great collection there.
1. PSA or SGC or raw or any combination thereof. PSA 2. Are you going to exclude "authentic", trimmed, marked, or otherwise altered cards. Given the rarity I'm not going to be picky to get the set started 3. Will you want only cards of a certain grade, or higher? Low Grades
Looking forward to hearing more about everyone's sets and sharing once I get mind going.
I would really suggest that you think about what is acceptable to you in terms of the card. For instance when I started working on my 1915 set I just bought whatever I could find only to realize about 2 years later than I should have saved the money because I found I liked mid range cards far more than the lower grades (non hall of famers). You might also think about collecting a subset a first, like buying the cards from your favorite team etc...
I had started the 1914 set but other projects kept me away from going too far with it.
I had been planning on keeping the cards, but if you want to make an offer on the Connie Mack, shoot me a PM. Awesome looking card, just a chip on one corner keeps it from a much better grade.

Trying to keep this thread from slipping too far away...I am working on HOFers from both of the CJ sets and have a 1915 Walter Johnson in SGC 7 that I would like to trade for a Walter Johnson PSA 7 to avoid the "crossover lottery"...when I attempt to attach the scan I am getting an "too large of file" message...I can email it to anyone that is interested
I am so jealous of everyone adding such great cards to their collections. I am still stuck on 135.....needing only 9 more to finish up the 1914 set.
Anybody have an extra Connie Mack, Reb Russell, Chick Gandil, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Christy Matthewson, Ad Brennan, Branch Rickey or Eugene Packard that they want to find a new home for?
BTW, are any of my esteemed Cracker Jack collecting colleagues going to make it to the National this year? I am attending my first National and would love to meet up and trade "war stories".
Another nice pick-up from Kit Young just before I head out to the National. Wheels up in three hours and I'll see ya back here on Sunday with a preview of all the goodies I found.

Back from the National and I picked-up a few gems, making this a very worthwhile trip.
The first was a raw pick-up from Chappell Cards whose sale was conditional upon the results from PSA. Grade popped in two hours and produced this HOFer:

Beautiful pickups at the National. I especially like the Lajoie. You must be pretty close to your goal!
I would have loved to meet up with you while there. I spent four hot, humid days in Baltimore, but had the time of my life meeting people, networking and just talking cards (my wife gets pretty tired of it). I even managed to pick up a couple of critical cards for my 1914 CJ set.....
I replaced my Schulte 1 with a Schulte 4. I replaced my Easterly 4 with an SGC 60. I received my raw Gandil and got it graded a SGC 30. I bought a Reb Russell 3 and a Packard 4.
I will post pictures in the near future, but that brings me down to needing 4 more cards to complete the set!!!! (Cobb, Wagner, Matty and Rickey.....a lot of money, but none of the cards are rare, at least).
This was no easy card to come by. It was the final pick-up while at the National this year and I managed to go 3 for 3 with my raw and SGC purchases. Absolutely gorgeous card!

LOL. Good one, Rich. It had been an SGC 40, but there's a thumb-sized smudge on the card's reverse that dropped it about 2-3 grades. I'll take a PSA 3 over a PSA 6 any day of the week! The last horizontal CJ (Austin) I need is in at PSA for grading and I'm hoping to have grades in another week, or so. Those eight cards are my favorite of the set.

Peckinpaugh is my favorite card in the set, and that is an especially nice example for the grade. Must be a wrinkle somewhere or a spot of paper loss on the back, it looks near flawless from the front.
