<< <i>Lets go with this because this is all we have for now.
AGE 4 coin proof set product limit - 35,000 Sold out at approximately 1/3rd of limit.
If the fractionals sell out at the same rate as the 4 coin set, the scenario would look something like this:
AGE dimes single product limit - 30,000 If it sells out at 1/3rd, that would be 10,000 plus (approx 10 - 15,000 4 coin sets) = 20 - 25,000 total AGE quarters single product limit - 16,000 If it sells out at 1/3rd, that would be 5,334 plus " " " " " " = 15,334 - 20,334 total AGE halves single product limit - 15,000 If it sells out at 1/3rd, that would be 5,000 plus " " " " " " = 15,000 - 20,000 total
The numbers are good enough for me.
Any ideas? >>
The numbers played out.
What's the chance the uncs also will play out as key Eagles?
Not certain that uncs will be keys. The uncs may be back. What are your thoughts?
<< <i>Back in the beginning to middle of December I stated I was going to buy AGE UNC-W's for several reasons, BUT all I got was ridicule and ignored. LOL Too funny...mine have been delivered and sitting in my vault. I still have until the 22nd to send them back. Played the 30 day return game which was a no brainer. Even better...I still have 2 weeks to see where the numbers go and to see if they go back on sale. >>
Thank God I ordered an unc AGE set in December and now have it in my hot little hands. But I want more, especially the quarters. I now have a bunch on backorder. The quarters have huge potential.
If they have not gone dark in 12 days and the numbers increase dramatically, then I will simply send them back...unless of course Gold spot starts rocketing north which is anyones guess right now.
Just adding to the speculation here - I think that the "W" Unc AGEs have some very good potential, which is why I ordered more for the third time around.
The Mint stated that they weren't ordering any more planchets back in October. The only reason that these didn't sell out is because of all the attention that the Plats and Proof AGEs were getting. That they DIDN'T sell out before being pulled might very well be a good thing, if you have some of them already.
With the move in distribution centers, the discontinuation of most collector fractionals and the new year just beginning, it's becoming more likely that these are gone for good. The Mint was already backing towards the exits in October.
Q: Are You Printing Money? Bernanke: Not Literally
This was posted on another thread already. It is a page from the Federal Registry in regards to the new pricing system to be implemented at the mint this year:

Notification of New Pricing Methodology for Numismatic Products Containing Platinum and Gold Coins
SUMMARY: The United States Mint is implementing a new pricing methodology for its numismatic products containing platinum and gold coins to mitigate the effect that fluctuating gold and platinum commodity costs has on the pricing of these products. The new pricing methodology is based primarily on the London Fix weekly average (average of the London Fix prices covering the previous Thursday a.m. Fix through the Wednesday a.m. Fix) platinum and gold prices, which reflect the market value of the platinum and gold bullion that these products contain. As required by law, the prices of these products also must be sufficient to recover all other costs incurred by the United States Mint, such as the cost of minting, marketing, and distributing such products (including labor, materials, dies, use of machinery, and promotional and overhead expenses). This pricing methodology will allow the United States Mint to change the prices of these products as often as weekly so they better reflect the costs of platinum and gold on the open markets.
DATES: The new pricing methodology, as further explained in the SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION section, will go into effect on January 12, 2008.
FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CONTACT: B.B. Craig, Associate Director for Sales and Marketing; United States Mint; 801 Ninth Street, NW.; Washington , DC 20220; or call 202-354-7500.
SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: Pursuant to the authority that 31 U.S.C. 5111(a)(3), 5112(i), 5112(k), 5112(o), and 5112(q) grant the Secretary of the Treasury to mint and issue gold and platinum coins and to prepare and distribute numismatic items, the United States Mint sells to the public numismatic products containing American Eagle Gold and Platinum Coins, American Buffalo Gold Coins, First Spouse Gold Coins, and the 2009 United States Mint Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin. In accordance with 31 U.S.C. 9701(b)(2)(B), the United States Mint is changing the prices of these coins to reflect a new methodology in pricing. Effective January 12, 2009, the United States Mint will commence selling numismatic products containing American Eagle Gold and Platinum Coins, American Buffalo Gold Coins, First Spouse Gold Coins, and the 2009 United States Mint Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin at prices established by using the new pricing methodology. Specifically, each Wednesday, the United States Mint will apply the average London Fix for platinum and gold (average of the London Fix prices covering the previous Thursday A.M. Fix through the Wednesday A.M. Fix) to the below pricing schedules. Price adjustments as a result of this process, if any, will be effective at 10 a.m. E.S.T. on the immediately following Thursday.
I held on to (10) 2006-W UNC AGE 1/2 ozers for two years hoping they would see some type of price appreciation. These were extremely low mintage. They went nowhere. i ended up selling to Kitco earlier this year.
Don't hold your breath on the AGE Unc's, you may just suffocate. The Demand has always been in the proof AGE's

2007 anniver set 19,583.....dogs for life or close to it but they do build the halves total pop and as such are useful for the key dates when you run the models.

A couple of months ago I sold 6 of the 2006 W AGE half ouncers to a board member for $600 each. Certified and raw the buyer really didn't care. Not a bad profit considering the coins cost $375 from the mint. You sold your 2006-W coins too soon Coinhog.

If the 2008-W AGEs are really dark, these coins will be HUGE!!
Unc W plats 1903 1257 1736 2465 2158 Still looking for finals on these things
That's interesting-- this is a slight reduction from the numbers we've seen the past several weeks.
1926 -23 1257 1778 -42 2485 -20 2158
Not the dramatic drop some had hoped for-- a little difficult to understand why, if a large drop was in order, such a small revision would be made at this time.
How will the new pricing policy affect mintages and prices of gold and platinum collector coins going forward?
My rough calculations show gold at $233 per ounce above spot *minimum* and platinum $242 above spot *minumum*. 2009 gold High Relief Saint will be about $100 higher.
Also proofs will sell at only a few dollars more than uncirculated. (I believe the only uncirculated coin left is the 1 oz. Gold Eagle.)
If they go to this pricing structure I wonder if the return policy will also be changed. Think of all the returns say if gold dropped $100 suddenly and you could buy the coin cheaper by returning and repurchase.
Gold and silver are valuable but wisdom is priceless.
I imagine next week the 1/10 will be over 15,000 seeing how the 1/4 is up over 8722 in one week? These have gone way up a week after backorder so perhaps the same happens to the unc w gold.
If numbers are being subtracted that proves that sales figures have surpassed the actual number of coins that were sold and delivered. And since none of the 4-coin sets have yet been subtracted, that proves that these sales figures have yet to be corrected. I personally sent back 1 set and it has never been subtracted from the total.
Does anyone still have pending orders for unc plats?

I still have an open backorder placed 11/13 for 11 sets. I haven't bothered to cancel it, but have no expectation of it being filled.
If you sent back a set, but it was used to fill someone else's backorder, that wouldn't require an adjustment. I know the general belief is that sales numbers include unfilled backorders, but I still have yet to see anything backing that up.
I'm not sure that such a small adjustment down is a good sign for anyone clinging to the hope that these will drop lower than 2006.

How do you explain that numbers, however small, are being subtracted from the sales figures?
How do you explain that numbers, however small, are being subtracted from the sales figures?
I don't even try.
I've been an advocate of the "wait and see" approach since the end of November --accept the numbers we're provided as the best we've got, and wait for whatever adjustments might come. That seems the only logical thing to do -- much more so than arguing that we can accurately predict the final count based on only 2 very different years of sales and our own projection as to what the Mint would do if we were running it.
But let's say that some returns were marked damaged (so were not used to fill a backorder, but instead destroyed). That could account for incremental revisions down.
edited to add: I see as I was typing my response, 2manycoins2fewfunds suggested the exact same potential explanation. Anyway, time will tell.
<< <i>19,583.....dogs for life or close to it but they do build the halves total pop and as such are useful for the key dates when you run the models. >>
Seems ludicrous to say 19K/25K pop coin is a dog, but (for now) it's true.
I placed an order January 2, originally said "in stock". Then got backorder notice.
Order was for a Prosperity Set, a 1/4 oz unc. gold eagle, and two SAE - expected ship date for all, 1/17.
Today, got an email from the mint saying the two SAEs were further backordered to an expected ship date of 1/30. My order tracking reflects that, as well as now an expected ship date for everything else of 1/22.
Curiouser and curiouser.
My orders are now for two of the Prosperity Sets, two 1/4 oz unc. gold eagles, and the two SAE. It'll be interesting to see what, if anything, I actually receive. I still wish they'd say . . . if I knew the money wasn't going for these orders, I'd be buying fractionals on ebay this week.
I must say, for a first experience dealing directly with the US Mint, I'm not terribly impressed so far.
I hope one thing we can all agree on is that the 2008 Proof Platinum Eagles are the kings of all of the gold, silver or platinum Proof American Eagles........... to date .
I hope one thing we can all agree on is that the 2008 Proof Platinum Eagles are the kings of all of the gold, silver or platinum proof eagles to date .
I think you need to further qualify that -- they're certainly the kings of the American Eagle proofs to date, if you are defining "king" by mintages.
<< <i>Since I have bought a number of these I am considering going psycho over these mintage numbers if they are not reduced to reflect the cancellations!
I've had that happen a couple of times in the not too distant past. I never got any coins from orders that said "shipped", and in the blue box "item no longer available".
<< <i>I've had that happen a couple of times in the not too distant past. I never got any coins from orders that said "shipped", and in the blue box "item no longer available". >>
Yup, me too and I thought it said amount $0.00 as well, but I can't remember for sure.
Something could be wrong with the US Mint inventory system.
I ordered some AGE proof 1/2 and 1/4 oz before they went backordered. They were marked as "in stock and reserved". But after this weekend's system maintenance, they went to backordered and today I received the notice that they were sold out with the web page "showing shipped" but "no longer available" and no "tracking number". I am sure that I won't see these coins.
Having worked with inventory control systems in the past, the move to Indiana may be a good thing. This would force the US Mint to reconcile the inventory, determine any inventory shrinkage and be able to reconcile the orders and backorders. Maybe we will get accurate sales and mintage numbers soon.
Probably the important question now is has anyone received any orders from the mint for gold, silver or platinum over the last week. Are they shipping from the new fulfillment center yet.
If you have any inclination to get the unc gold eagles, best to do it before January 12, when the Mint's new pricing policy goes into effect. For example, if the spot price of gold stays above $850, the 1 oz unc gold eagle will go from $975 to $1128.

Too late to do that since they sold out a couple days ago

<< <i>I held on to (10) 2006-W UNC AGE 1/2 ozers for two years hoping they would see some type of price appreciation. These were extremely low mintage. They went nowhere. i ended up selling to Kitco earlier this year. >>
A couple of months ago I sold 6 of the 2006 W AGE half ouncers to a board member for $600 each. Certified and raw the buyer really didn't care. Not a bad profit considering the coins cost $375 from the mint. You sold your 2006-W coins too soon Coinhog.

Not the dramatic drop some had hoped for-- a little difficult to understand why, if a large drop was in order, such a small revision would be made at this time.
While that's still down significantly from the 12 month high, it's up over 30% from its recent low.
Gold just under $850; that's roughly where it was when platinum and gold reached parity in December.

I imagine next week the 1/10 will be over 15,000 seeing how the 1/4 is up over 8722 in one week? These have gone way up a week after backorder so perhaps the same happens to the unc w gold.

If it is printed by a US government agency, it must be true.. Welcome to the new OBAMAnation.
Does anyone still have pending orders for unc plats?
2008 AE PLAT UNC MM 4 COIN (10) sets on B/O since 11/13/08.........
On the flip side, platinum is moving up.
<< <i>

>>
How do you explain that numbers, however small, are being subtracted from the sales figures?
If coins noted to be damaged then they may be set aside for smelter.
Edited to update the 2007 plat $50 Reverse Proof #
It'll be interesting
to see what, if anything, I actually receive. I still wish they'd say . . . if I knew the money wasn't going for these
orders, I'd be buying fractionals on ebay this week.
I must say, for a first experience dealing directly with the US Mint, I'm not terribly impressed so far.
Such is life, I guess.
Not to worry...eventually you'll take the Mint's illogic and abuse in stride...we've been getting abused around here for years (decades?)!
And don't forget, another division of this same fine organization is the IRS...which is renowned for its customer service policies!!!

I hope one thing we can all agree on is that the 2008 Proof Platinum Eagles are the kings of all of the gold, silver or platinum Proof American Eagles........... to date .
I think you need to further qualify that -- they're certainly the kings of the American Eagle proofs to date, if you are defining "king" by mintages.
All of my proof orders now state "order has been shipped."
In the box, however, says "item no longer available." All orders placed on 12/23.

According to rep when order status says shipped, it only means that the warehouse has pulled the order - in other words: you'll get the coins.
Even though the blue box states that the item is no longer available.
I still don't expect to see these coins.
<< <i>I've had that happen a couple of times in the not too distant past. I never got any coins from orders that said "shipped", and in the blue box "item no longer available". >>
Yup, me too and I thought it said amount $0.00 as well, but I can't remember for sure.
No-one at the Mint call center has a clue.
PS This is a joke.
<< <i>If you have any inclination to get the unc gold eagles, best to do it before January 12, when the Mint's new pricing policy goes into effect. For example, if the spot price of gold stays above $850, the 1 oz unc gold eagle will go from $975 to $1128. >>
Too late to do that since they sold out a couple days ago
