I never understood why they didn't promote usage of the coins more and why they continued to make so many more coins than the market required. I know why, but I don't understand why.

It's the Manganese lobbyists that keep the un-circulating dollars in play, jmho.
I just posted the letter in the other thread (coins nobody wants) and then found more discussion here.
The language is somewhat confusing. Not sure if its referencing just the presidential $1 series or the Sacs too. There is no explicit mention of axing the spouses as well, but it would be awkward to be making spouse coins with no presidential dollar counterpart. I think it could be a longshot for this to go through---but then again we are in interesting financial times-- but it would cement JT as the reigning champion of the spouses unless something from this year goes lower.
I think they have the wrong idea though. Ax the dollar bill, keep the coins.

I have not followed the 2008 W Gold buff set prices lately. I just checked. An NGC PF70 + MS70 ER matched set just sold for $17400. An NGC PF70ER set just sold for $9675. HOLY COW! I sure wish that I had focused more on the buffs and less on the plats in 08. I had a lot of buffs graded. I opted for the first year of issue holders instead on the ER for my sets. How dumb. I got a lot of 70s. That was a costly mistake.
I have a feeling that political heads will roll if they eliminate the dollar bill and make everyone use dollar coins. I don't think people want a bunch of jingling coins weighing down their pants. Might be good for the suspender market though.
Gold and silver are valuable but wisdom is priceless.

They need to use an new facility for storage for these dollar coins. Congress will think twice aboutf their wasteful spending ways. Its not so easy these days for them to get away with this as it was in the past.
Those golden coins sure get ugly after a few years of circulation. I just cannot see the public being happy about being forced into using them. Maybe they can use them as ballast in the next aircraft carrier.

1oz w gold buffalo, 1oz w gold eagles (proof and unc), should increased by $50. Spouse Gold (proof and unc) should increased by $25. >>
Haven't the 1oz gold eagles remained at their current price since they were made available? I don't remember them going down from $1,778 even though I believe gold dropped below $1,500 since their initial offering.

I kinda wonder if any new boat does get close to unseating Julia Tyler, will those who are heavily invested in JT go into a buying spree to prevent it from being unseated?

Missed that boat along time ago. New boats are sailing and can be purchased at great prices. >>
But will any of the new boats unseat Julia??? That is the question.... >>
Yes that is the question. I think it will come on the back of super uglies and rising prices. There really isn't a hag of interest until Teddy's bride. I think it will happen in there somewhere.
There are so many other low mintage options that still provide nice upside. I'm not going to chase boats that have already sailed.
<< <i>Glad you all like this coin. I just really can not get much interest or care for these at all, and I LIKE moderns and buy most US mint products. >>
I could give a rip about these coins. I do like generating more bullion holdings and gains from these buggers eventually find their way into the bullion stack.

Well, I knew there was something I'd forgotten to do, I finally ordered the book, actually picked up 3 copies new for under $10.00 on amazon. Looking forward to a great read...
Depends on if the pres dollars survive the chopping block. I checked and the pres dollars and spouses were on the same bill..
"C) TERMINATION OF PROGRAM- No bullion coin may be issued under this subsection after the termination, in accordance with subsection (n)(8), of the $1 coin program established under subsection (n)."
Section n8: "(8) TERMINATION OF PROGRAM- The issuance of coins under this subsection shall terminate when each President has been so honored, subject to paragraph (2)(E), and may not be resumed except by an Act of Congress."
It does seem as though if the presidential dollars are axed the spouses will go with. In that case, things would be looking up for the JT, though the series won't have the same continuity to it.

Yes that would change the game for sure PinkFloyd. Guess we will just have to wait and see. Pressures will increase to cut out all the fat that is in MR GOVY today.
I'm really starting to wonder if I should dump my 2004 $50 proof platinum coin while there's a premium. A 5,000 mintage used to be impressive but it's not even in the top ten of the lowest mintage platinum coins anymore.

It looks like the Eliza Unc (now at 1846) is selling at about 20/week. Does anyone think that this one could unseat JT? Anyone buying the Eliza for this reason?
I also see that the 2011 W AGE is now at 3K mintage

Casman, I haven't seen you in awhile. Good to see you back! You'll find the book to be very well-done, lacking very little as a good reference for Moderns and the analytical approach that Eric uses is worth paying some attention.

There has been talk here that Eliza could unseat JT. Eric has mentioned that he thinks JT will remain Queen. But with rising gold, lame economy while entering the post-Lincoln era just may give JT a run. Alice Paul anyone?

If I didn't think we were going to see a drop in prices before the uptrend continues I would feel really strong on eliza unseating Julia. As far as the AGE 1 oz. 2008 W 1 oz had a mintage in the 11,000 range. Some nice opportunities forming and hard to go wrong with either of them.
Elisa went on sale 5/5. Has there been a consistent pattern of how long they've remained on sale? Elisa is way under Julia at present w/only about 10 sold in the last week reported.
<< <i>If metals prices keep going up JT could get taken out. >>
Might it not matter as far as value though Eric?
If the mintage of the JT is unsurped by an unattractive spouse (how many so far?) might the JT remain higher in desire for collectors with an eye towards
I think the price structure of the first spouse (frequently first hag gold) will look much like the grey sheet price listings for the silver commems both new and old as they mature. Translates design and mintage combination may matter not just mintage.

Yes. The liberty series as an example. Should be fun
I will certainly be keeping an eye on Elisa, Lucy H., and Lucretia....though I will probably play the "pay attention and wait until they go dark" game.

We will know the queen of that short good looking set in the next 6 months.
The market is going to be wondering who is Queen of the over all series for a WHILE. And there may not be a clear key in terms of mintage ever. I am still very concerned about prospect of key date effect dillution on these generics. We still could see a dozen 3100-3500 mintage coins before its over.
Eliza Unc. just cracked 2000-- barely, with 2,021 sold so far. MOH and Army Unc $5 gold are neck and neck with CMH at 6,112 and Army at 6,137. Julia Grant Unc got off to a strong opening month at 1,881 sold so far.. people like horses!? (Julia Grant First Spouse coin has 3 horses on it)
"I'll split the atom! I am the fifth dimension! I am the eighth wonder of the world!" -Gef the talking mongoose.
Where are folks getting the idea that Eliza could be on track for new key status? Relatively speaking she is selling OK for only having been on sale for 12 weeks or so. Spouse mintages are now "on the radar" whereas a year ago they were not. To me this suggests that overtaking Julia will be no easy task, nearly regardless of what gold does.
I would say, "yes" for gold and platinum "bullion" coins, which includes the collector versions (W mint mark). I do not believe the others fall under the price auto increase.
<< <i>Yes Eric, and isn't it ironic that the "Queen" of the set so far is the most attractive rather than a laggard of time and space!

Well stated Miles.
I don't understand how the best looking (non-lib) spouse ended up with the lowest mintage so far. >>
It may well be due to the fact that she was the second release for the John Tyler presidency. Some people may have been collecting one per president, or perhaps not even looking at the fact that it was a different design.
To be honest, I had always thought both Tyler spouse coins have very attractive ladies on them.
