<< <i>Mint Explains PM Coin Pricing Policy - minimizing would be changes due to volatility >>

I take it then that nobody cares that the Mint did not follow its own guidelines and lower the price of the First Spouse coins that week like it said it would?

the published documents could be expanded to include the full policy regarding coin pricing changes.

I can't help but wonder if once this is well-known, more internal criteria are used in an effort to prevent gaming the price changes.....

Just another step in the wrong direction for the coin collector by the US Mint. Turn the collectors off and the mintages will drop.

<< <i>A response from the US Mint has revealed that there is more to the pricing policy than published in the Federal Register. There are additional criteria defined within an internal policy that can override the published policy. Until now, these additional criteria had not been provided or revealed to the public. >>

I laugh every time I see how clueless a socialist government is in the free market. In their great wisdom they say hey, we are not making enough money so lets just raise the price assuming the sales numbers will stay the same. They are perplexed when the revenue is less with higher unit prices so what do they do- raise the price again. Brilliant. They seem to execute their tax policies in the same manner.

At the less expensive end of the collecting spectrum, the 2009 (Satin Finish) Mint Set goes dark two days from now. The latest sales figures are under 800,000.

The 8 Lincoln cents in the set are of particular interest, as this set is the only way to obtain 2009 Philly and Denver cents in the original bronze composition. I expect that in the future, these Mint Set cents will be recognized as distinct coins, much as the 1982 bronze and zinc cents are today (along with the 1864 copper-nickel and bronze Indian cents).

With each of the 8 coins having a likely final mintage lower than that of the 1931-S cent (and each being a type coin to boot), I think they are a low-risk speculation at less than $2 per coin (valuing the other coins in the set at face).

  • I wish PCGS would update thier First Spouse price guide. Louisa Adams is at $ 1650.00 in a 70 unc. It just makes me wonder about a 70 Julia unc. And the Jackson, Van Buren go for atleast $ 1200.00 in a 70. PCGS that is......

    Jefferson's Liberty Proof question....

I just picked up a Jefferson's Liberty Proof in OGP from the BST. It arrived today.

I noticed a very small reddish looking spot at eye level between Lady Liberty's eye and her hair lock. It's only visible via a 5x loupe.

I didn't bother to bring this to the attn of the seller as this coin has little if any numismatic premium and I just got it so that I could have a complete Lib. subset.

Has anyone else noticed this on the Jeff (or any other Spouse)?

Does anyone know what these small red spots are?

    Thanks, Ron

    I agree.

That said, I'm taking a bunch to Balto for slabbing. The OGP will eventually cause big time toning I'm told.

The "First Strike" designation might have something to do with it. I know that First Strikes command a premium in MS and Proof 70, but are First Strikes also worth extra in 69?

I had a Martha proof that got some red "stains" in it after sitting in a SDB for awhile. Maybe some of the gold was not in pure form and it oxidized. I was wondering how that could happen with 0.9999 fine gold.

The red stains are the .0001

or maybe it's not actually .9999 fine gold -- hmm... if that were the case, would it qualify as an error?

They were selling at $935 Ron. Check back as they periodically & Unpredictably seem to add stock.

Interestingly, the Julia Proof 70's are going for $100 more than the UNC 70's were at MCM.

I quote their prices as I am not finding inventory anywhere else. Anyone have luck elsewhere?

I don't know Raufus, I haven't been keeping up with the pricing that closely. The minus and pluses by the price show the price changes for this week. The greysheet publishes the gold buffalo prices every two weeks.

  • Eric's new book Modern Commemorative Coins will arrive in the warehouse on Tuesday, June 22, and will be shipped to bookstores within days.

He did a fantastic job! He gives great tips on what to buy and has the most accurate mintages for commemoratives.

I think it is the 2008 proof platinums turn. They seem to be flying under the radar with everthing else that went on in 2008. The book should be interesting. I ordered mine in February it seems like it has been an eternity for it to be finally getting close to receiving.

Nice to be able to read portions of the book while waiting for the printed copy to arrive!

On page 229, the Mint State Gold Eagle table appears to have the mintages shifted one column to the left from their respective headers - maybe that can be adjusted for the next edition.

I wonder why the mint has added this little tidbit to their pricing grid.

Note: The United States Mint reserves the right to discontinue sale of gold numismatic products in the event that the selling price of United States Mint gold bullion products begin approaching the sale price of the gold numismatic products.

If that happens then mintages on gold coins could end at very low levels.

Maybe this is a way out for the mint should spot gold (or whatever PM) rocket past the price of a given numismatic item before the normal Thursday price reset. For example, if gold jumped $200 in a couple days, most of the First Spouse gold could be had for below spot if they didn't halt sales.
  • Sounds like they are worried about a rapid spike in gold/platinum prices occuring between previously announced repricing intervals.

That was what made 2008 such a great year.

There were times in 2008 that the mint got killed by slow repricing of product during bullion spikes and in turn they got killed by the 30 day return guarantee when prices crashed.

2008 was for the astute collector of modern coins a year we will likely never see again.

It certainly was the reason mint ended 30 day return policy and instituted regular repricing of bullion based coins.

This also assists the in pulling product that is "In Process" when Thursday or a large jump occurs; thus,

the Buffalos or Spouses you have in your account can either be re-priced or pulled and you may be

required to reorder at a higher, not lower, price.
