Mint To Release GW Presedential Dollars First Day Coin Covers On April 4th at Noon - SOLD OUT

  • Remember the Delaware Quarter FDCC was at $400 each before the Mint re-released them.

My position has always been simple: if the Mint re-releases these, they'll flop. If not, they'll soar.
I heard they were making a French version of Medal of Honor. I wonder how many hotkeys it'll have for "surrender."

It's still that first day of production that entices me. I plan to assemble a complete set of these "first day" dollars. To the best of my knowledge, the earliest "first day" coins that are even available to collectors are the statehood quarters and the 2000 Sac. Wouldn't it be something to be able to own a "first day of production" 1909 Lincoln Cent, 1938 Jefferson Nickel, or 1964 Kennedy Half? And that is naming only series that still circulate. What would FDOP Walkers, Buffaloes, SLQs, or Buffaloes be worth? Of course this isn't an aspect of the hobby that appeals to all collectors. But to me, FDOP really adds an intangible element of interest to any series.

You forgot the Nickel FDCC's....all first day of production....

  • 7over8 is right: sellers have placed enormous pressure on the market. From where I stand, it looks like everything depends on the US Mint: if enough orders are returned to convice the Mint to reopen sales, then it'll be disasterous. Just the psycological impact of a re-release of a sold out product will be catastrophic.

I really suspect this will NOT be the case. The Mint did something very different this time. They sold out the Covers and then stated that despite the sell-out, orders would be taken to accommodate buyers whose orders would be filled with any returns the Mint received.

This to me says re-opened sales are not going to happen, because they already have taken place! Many here still have unfilled orders and if NOT cancelled, these orders could be filled with the returned Covers @ the issue price of $14.95.

If I was a buyer who missed the boat and I had such a pending un-filled order, there is not much motivation for me to cancel my 'place in line'.

There are always returns for EVERY issue.

Even the 2006 W Uncs had a few, however the Mint never re-released the Plats because of the orders 'still in place'.

Again, by holding the orders open after sell-out, the US Mint insured us that there was no possibility of a re-release.

I have pulled an (80) Unit bulk sale down from the Bay just because it is obvious that this is such a hit and to allow sub-$20 lunatics to be drained of the supply.

The Covers were so cheap at the Mint that there is no problem hoarding these for some time and leaking them out in a dribble.

These are the OFFICIAL FIRST STRIKES of the first series of an HUGE issue that will last at least 10 years!

    why would anyone return this?

I haven't seen any selling below the issue price.

even at $19, still that is a heck of return.

remember folks, this is 10 year program.
  • The Statehood quarter program is a ten year program too, and how are those covers selling? Not well.

    it is selling $40+

considering the mintage for Delaware was 100,000, it is doing really well IMO
  • I think the market on these coin covers will be better in the long term. It's bound to be better having them then all these slabbed first day issue coins that are floating around. How many are there of those things anyway?? The mint has designated these first day of mintage of 50, 000 . How can it get any better than that??? And now that you can get them graded as such...It's all the better. I think it's will be the same with the statehood quarter FDCC's. If I had the cash I'd go back and snag them all up. A collector should be looking in the long term.....And, not always be looking for a short term flip. I think these are a really enjoyable item....They are too overlooked for now.....I believe their time will come. image ... Just my opinion.

How many of these sealed covers do you think will be opened?

I opened 6 out of the 108 I bought. Sent 5 to NGC.
    Did anyone else open any?

How many of the 50,000 do you think will be opened?

Well just bought all the back issues of the State Quarter FDCC from the U.S. Mint. They are all still available except for DE, MD, MASS, NJ, PA. Only missing Mass and Delaware. I know these are not popular. I won't have them graded though if NGC decides to do these also.

On an other note it seems the prices are inching up most auctions in the 22-25 range with lots of 10 selling for 200-220.

<< <i>PCGS Revises Guidance For First Day of Issue Presidential Dollars

    Revised April 19, 2007

The first coin of the new Presidential Dollar series (the Washington $1) was released on February 15, 2007. Special First Day of Issue inserts are available for Presidential Dollar coins through the PCGS Bulk Submissions program, under the following options.

1/. Official Release Date. Coins delivered to PCGS on the first official day of their release or sent in sealed packages postmarked on that date.

2/. Mint-sealed Boxes. Coins housed in original, mint-sealed boxes with a white seal bearing the name of the President (i.e. "PRESIDENT GEORGE WASHINGTON") and the official release date (i.e. "DO NOT BREAK SEAL UNTIL FEB. 15"). Such boxes must also contain the date stamp of the Mint inspector (see below). The same rules will apply to future Presidential Dollars unless the Mint makes changes in their packaging and sealing.

3/. U.S. Mint Official American Presidency $1 Coin Cover Series. These are First Day of Issue Covers sold by the U.S. Mint, each containing two coins (one from Philadelphia, one from Denver), both from the first day of production. The holder is stamped and postmarked on the official first day of issue (see below). Coins will be removed from the holder and graded separately. The original shipping boxes need not be sealed, but the covers must be submitted intact and unopened. A minimum of 50 covers may be submitted through the Bulk Submissions program. PCGS is currently developing an option for encapsulating the entire cover. PCGS does not offer a First Day of Mintage (or Production) option.
First Day of Issue inserts are only available through the PCGS Bulk Submissions program. Each order must contain a minimum of 100 coins (or 50 First Day of Issue Covers). All bulk orders should be submitted directly to the PCGS offices and will not be accepted at shows. If you have any questions about submitting bulk coins, please contact the Bulk Department at (949) 567-1216.

PCGS Guidance is based on the best information available at the time the guidance is developed. PCGS, at their discretion, may adjust guidance as new information becomes available. >>

I was going to put some Washington Covers up on ebay but now I have decided to hold on to mine. I did sell a lot of 10 today for a ridicously low price and I regret doing it for a 53% profit.

These are still selling slowly and I have made some money but am glad I cancelled most of my orders from the mint. People are going to be sending them back to the mint within the next couple of weeks.
  • They were selling them for $30.00 on television lastnight.

That should generate some interest. I'm sure they are touting the fact that they are limited and sold out.

The slight problem is the seller's trying to sell them all at the same time, it's simple supply and demand. Now with literally dozens ending within a few minutes of eachother buyers have the edge. Once supplies shorten, demand and prices should go up, think you shoulda kept them, they were cheap to begin with and it's better than money in the bank....

It looks like the number of covers on ebay is starting to decline - Hopefully this will cause prices to start to rise.

I still think these will be good long term.
  • Cheer up! Coin Vault will probably soon be selling the enslabbed covers for $50 and all the innocent sheep on ebay will think they are worth more.

I do too. It will take some time, but it will rise and be good for those who hang in for the longer haul.

They nearly all doubled out of the chute, then dropped a little. There should be no complaints from sellers or buyers, unnless you bought a pallet of these from the mint and don't have the "closet space".
  • I bought extra with the intent to sell them for a profit. However, I also decided that if they didn't take off I could give them as gifts to a few people. You should of seen the reaction to me giving a couple of friends circulated ones. So I am actually going to save money AND get a thoughtful gift image.

And of course I will keep several for my own collection. I will just hold on to them and maybe someday get them graded via NGC. I really like what they are doing over there for these coins.

The NGC encapsulated covers are doing quite well. Man, is PCGS missing the boat on these.

<< <i>The NGC encapsulated covers are doing quite well. Man, is PCGS missing the boat on these. >>

While the individual issues are selling for substantially more than PCGS FDIs, that's not the whole story. NGC slabs more 70s so individual NGC 70s sell for less than individual PCGS 70s, but from an overall company perspective, NGC probably makes more money slabbing ultra-moderns.

If individual PCGS FDIs are selling for less than NGC FDMs, PCGS could still be making more money overall when it comes to the bottom line on their income statement, which may be the more important number for a public company.
