<< <i>PCGS Revises Guidance For First Day of Issue Presidential Dollars
Revised April 19, 2007
The first coin of the new Presidential Dollar series (the Washington $1) was released on February 15, 2007. Special First Day of Issue inserts are available for Presidential Dollar coins through the PCGS Bulk Submissions program, under the following options.
1/. Official Release Date. Coins delivered to PCGS on the first official day of their release or sent in sealed packages postmarked on that date.
2/. Mint-sealed Boxes. Coins housed in original, mint-sealed boxes with a white seal bearing the name of the President (i.e. "PRESIDENT GEORGE WASHINGTON") and the official release date (i.e. "DO NOT BREAK SEAL UNTIL FEB. 15"). Such boxes must also contain the date stamp of the Mint inspector (see below). The same rules will apply to future Presidential Dollars unless the Mint makes changes in their packaging and sealing.
3/. U.S. Mint Official American Presidency $1 Coin Cover Series. These are First Day of Issue Covers sold by the U.S. Mint, each containing two coins (one from Philadelphia, one from Denver), both from the first day of production. The holder is stamped and postmarked on the official first day of issue (see below). Coins will be removed from the holder and graded separately. The original shipping boxes need not be sealed, but the covers must be submitted intact and unopened. A minimum of 50 covers may be submitted through the Bulk Submissions program. PCGS is currently developing an option for encapsulating the entire cover. PCGS does not offer a First Day of Mintage (or Production) option.
First Day of Issue inserts are only available through the PCGS Bulk Submissions program. Each order must contain a minimum of 100 coins (or 50 First Day of Issue Covers). All bulk orders should be submitted directly to the PCGS offices and will not be accepted at shows. If you have any questions about submitting bulk coins, please contact the Bulk Department at (949) 567-1216.
PCGS Guidance is based on the best information available at the time the guidance is developed. PCGS, at their discretion, may adjust guidance as new information becomes available. >>

<< <i>Is it a P & D? >>
Yep, since these come postmarked on Feb 15th I wonder if PCGS will cerify them as FDI.
<< <i>First day of production. Closest you will get to First Strike. >>
No order limit as of yet. I wonder if the telemarketers will buy them all
But, If you look on the mint website there are alot of unsold First Day Coin Covers for state quarters and the 2000 Sac Dollar.
<< <i>Maybe this one will do okay since it's the 1st Prez Dollar and there has been alot of press about this coin.

The 2000 sac is sold out, I don't know why it is listed on the site. I have all of the Lewis and Clark related coin covers. The artwork is really nice. The Ocean in View nickel has a mintage of about 30,000. It had risen to over $100 on the bay until the mint decided to sell them again.
These GW covers might get a speculative burst if they sell out but I don't expect the value to hold long term.

I think they should be at least as good of an investment as the FDI coins. With a P &D PCGS MS67 FDI selling for over $1,000 and being that these don't come from bank rolls, they should have a better chance of grading higher if sent in. I wonder if PCGS will consider the sealed mint box enough for issuing a FDI insert if submitted through bulk. They also are true coins from the first day of production, which is likely not the case with the FDI coins already graded.
<< <i>Would you have to send them to PCGS in the original box the Mint sends them to you in? >>
I think we need an official answer on this. If they come in a Feb 15th postmarked sealed package from the mint, as they advertise, they should qualify for the FDI insert through bulk. No word on order limits from the mint yet. The mint website will allow you to add 99 of a single State First Day Cover to your cart. You should be able to add atleast 50 of the Presedential dollars Coin Covers to get the 100 coins needed to qualify for a FDI bulk order.
Anyone know if there is a per household limit?
<< <i>Anyone know about this yet?...if pcgs will certify them as first day?
Anyone know if there is a per household limit? >>
Unfortunately, don't think these will be eligible for the FDI insert due to PCGS required the coins to be in their building or postmarked to them on February 15th at least that's what I was told by CS
The Mint didn't take any special care of these. They just grabbed 50,000 out of the hopper and but them in the mint package.
Of course if 50 of us buy 1000 sets, we could corner the market. One day sell out !!
<< <i>Why would anybody think these coins will be in any better shape than the ones found in rolls?

My thoughts.-
1/. Fresh dies - Coins are true 'First Strikes' - No way on knowing when the coins from bank rolls were minted.
2/. Less handling - Coins in bank rolls have received additional handling and are more susceptible to contact marks from the additional handling
3/. Coin Covers are usually nicer coins than can be found in circulation.
Anyone buying these?
I got a few coming. The prices that the PCGS slabbed coins are currently bringing, have inspired me.

Yes, I got 10. I was told that these are selling pretty swiftly. So if you are thinking about it, quit thinking and get some. These will sell out quick.

Got 2 10 set orders .. 10 for the kids & grand kids & 10 for eBaying at some point in the future...
<< <i>Sellout?? >>
Probably will pretty quick...........
I've wished many many times that I bought 100 sets of the ASE anniv.
<< <i>They are backordered now, whatever that means. >>
They say backordered but they will get those shipped out pretty quick.
Expected to ship 4-21-07
What up wit dat?
Be soundin like those last Plat BU's that kept getting pushed
farther and farther out until finally they were canceled.
CC acct. has been charged.
As far as I'm concerned, the provenance of these coins as stated by the Mint,
is all that is needed to authenticate the coins, no Kool-aid for me thank you!
Order # 24799xxx backordered.
Does that mean I will get them or are they just teasing me?
<< <i>chances of no edge lettering coins being in these sets? >>
Zero, if they did it right.

Au contraire, mon·sieur . Are we forgetting the " grassroots promotional campaign" the US Mint is employing to promote this series? Smooth edges found in First Day Covers would give this game yet another shot in the arse.
<< <i>chances of no edge lettering coins being in these sets? >>
Nada...slim to none...these coins have to be hand fed into the FDCC, hopefully by clerks with at least 20/100 eye vision...

Who would have thought PCGS could slab a plain edge Washinton into a FDI holder? Messydesk has apparently found 3 !
Messydesk found 3
I would not be surprised if they are already sold out.
Another "Golden Egg" from the Mint?
I ordered 10 on the 4th and they are already backordered to 21st.
They will make great presents.
Now that they will be graded as FDI I ordered 50 more today.
With everyone opening them for grading sealed ones may become rare?
Rookie Joe
<< <i>It seems that NGC will also grade these FDI.

but you need 100 sets to qualify for the bulk FDI...need to get busy & order 40 more...
these and the gem bu graded will make a nice way to follow the series. if the gem bu graded start to
carry too much of a premium, as people get more selective about sending them in, these fdc sets make a good alternative.
the packaging contains the pertinent presidential information
maybe the quality of the coins in these sets will be a little better too.
and the paper in the sets can lay a nice tone on a coin sometimes.
I don't understand why anyone would break these out for grading, unless you are sure you have a 68+ or something.
If you get the FDI from PCGS all you will have is what there are already thousands of.
In my opinion, the MINT is saying these ARE ACTUAL first day strikes. NOT some made up label from a grading company, where the coins were minted over a number of days/weeks/months.
I think you keep these sealed, unopened. (each set comes in a sealed white cardboard envelop). That is what will bring the $$ on ebay.
But heh, that's just me, do what you want.
<< <i>So..will PCGS have to accept all of the other Coin covers as first day?. Who knows when the coins were attached to the package. I thought each coin was circulating before each cover was packaged and released. >>
Read the verbage on the Mints website:
"This limited-edition cover—only 50,000 will be produced—features two George Washington $1 Coins from the first day of production, November 9, 2006 (Philadelphia), and November 28, 2006 (Denver). "
These are the ONLY true First Day Strikes.
I agree with afic.. They are already sealed. Is today's collector really that obsessed with a grading service?
So, can you send them in anytime if they are sealed to get the FDI?
<< <i>Thanks!
I agree with afic.. They are already sealed. Is today's collector really that obsessed with a grading service? >>
The problem is nobody will pay $1,000 for a coin cover. They are paying $1,000+ for a FDI PCGS MS67.
<< <i>Thanks!

That's valid but, as we have seen, it isn't the real collector driving up the first issue labels, it is the ones who dont know better.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
