i just recieved my '72, '76 & '77 topps baseball sets from steve today. i had conversations w/ '72 topps thread guys first b4 i splurged for '72 set, but it is a beauty and for roughly $1/card, a sweet deal.
there is still '76 & '77 sets for sale on the site, for $200/set, it is a really nice deal. i am unfortunately now tempted to send in some of the cards for grading, but am simply enjoying the cards for the time being.
gl bunker, perhaps zef could provide you w/ some pointers or ideas for most smoothly handling this undertaking!

I would buy a box, maybe two, if there was a significant savings by doing it this way. Otherwise, it seems like not worth the effort. Just my two cents...

The premium you're paying for is because the case is sealed. A sealed case is always going to go for a higher price (per box) than a loose box, even if that loose box is "case fresh".

<< <i>I was thinking about a box, but this doesn't make much sense to me. Steve already sells case-fresh 1978 boxes for $575 (and they are indeed case fresh, I have opened several over the last couple of years from him) - what's the advantage of paying more here, and having the boxes be shipped twice?

Jerry, I understand your thinking.
Grote, It is obvious that the single $575 wax boxes Steve has for sale originate from these cases on hand. How many there are I have no clue. I picture Steve with 2 or three of these and has one cracked at all times selling off the boxes.
I think a bust like this would be a blast given the experienced quality of Steve's stash. Not to mention all of the scans from participants!

I don't question that, but my point is that when you buy a sealed case of wax boxes there's going to be a premium cost per box only because of the scarcity factor--there are many "case fresh" boxes available, but how many times will you find an intact sealed case up for sale? The premium is for the sealed case in its intact state, so in this situation, yes, it's a better deal to buy a box separately.

Right, the premium is certainly the sealed case. Although I don't know about the "many" case fresh wax boxes available in the market. The only guy I know who I TRUST that the box would be case fresh is Steve. Nobody else .... This rip is a great idea. The small dollar difference being discussed is just that ...... small.
Lets go with the rip!!!!

Exactly. When I say "many" case fresh boxes, I mean that there are many collectors that will buy a single box from Steve that came straight out of a case, but how many collectors have the deep pockets to purchase the entire sealed case from him? It's quite a difference, obviously.

True.
This applies to ANY purchase like this such as the $25,000 '75 Topps Mini purchase and the very constant breaks that happen around here anymore.

This rip isnt about the guy who wants a whole box yes they help make it happen but its for the ones who always wanted to rip some vintage but couldnt afford or didnt want to buy a whole box Plus the fun and commoradery we have here. Its also the fun and excitment factor.
Plus the full box on steves site is 575 plus what 8.00 shipping well thats what a full box in this rip would come out to or near that.
Again I want a full box but its all about the guys who want the smaller lots. This is that chance to bring the friends together and sit around the pc and scanner and share some wax ripping fun.
So kudos to bunker for wanting to do this.
All the rips weve had have been lots of fun and thats what this hobby is suppose to be fun.
Heck when we do these rips i feel like im 10yrs old again hangin out with my buds and talking ball and comparing cards.Plus i would never just sit at home and think "i'll order a 78 box today" But when things like this thread happens i think"yeah i want a 78 box from that case.
So no offense if the box is not costing more then buying them 1 at a time dont come in here knocking what alot of others like doing. Nobodys twisting anybodys arm here saying you have to join in.

Dont get me wrong this rip is Bunkers brain child Im just putting my 2 cents in here and helping him out.
I'm not even talking about the tamper factor of some packs and boxes, but even more, the handling factor over the years. I have bought wax and racks, both packs and boxes that were well circulated. The cards in those packs were nowhere near what the cards could potentially been if the packs or boxes hadn't made their way around the country.
I've bought packs, boxes and cases from Steve as well as off of eBay. With out a doubt, the cases are ALWAYS stronger in regards to corners and edges than the single boxes, and the boxes are always strong than single packs.
While there maybe a premium on "intact" cases, I think it is well worth it for 6packs, 9 packs or a full box to know for certain that it came out of an "intact" case.
My Auctions
Grote, the premium for it being a sealed case is gone the instant you (or whomever) cracks it open to distribute the boxes - which is exactly what Steve has done on the case he is selling boxes from. No difference at all. If he was selling random boxes acquired from various cases, then I could see paying a premium to know that the boxes you are buying are coming from a just-opened case.
But, I do see how this is good for guys that want smaller than one box lots - this is a great way to assure yourself clean, untampered with packs without buying a whole box. At that level, this makes sense to do.
<< <i>Theres no gaurantee the single boxes steve has are case fresh. mayb e some are maybe some arnt not every loose box he has is case fresh. With this you would know without a doubt your packs or box is absolutly case fresh no questions asked.. No offense but with the baseball rip we just had it included a 78 box from steve and it did not look case fresh. >>
I see your point - I only mention that Steve is selling his 1978 boxes as "case-fresh" because he says so on the website, and my experience with them has been positive. But, in fairness, I haven't bought one from him in a few months, so I'll take your word on the condition of the latest box you bought from him.
Of course, my point again was that the reason the cost per box in a sealed case is a smidgen higher than that of a single box taken out of a case is that if someone is willing to pony up for a sealed case they may not want to crack or distribute the boxes in that case at all, and the sealed case is where the premium is.
Also, 80s is correct when he states that every 1978 box from Steve is not necessarily pulled straight out of a case, as he has a buying list for such boxes, too, from private collectors.
All that said, this break is a great deal all around, for the smaller lot buyer as well as the full box buyer as a box from this break is guaranteed to come out of a sealed case.
