    marym gets #52!

Getting #53 requires jumping through some modest hoops
    image

#53 goes to the person who first posts the correct result to this calculation (which also happens to be the number of coins I found on my first ever detecting outing)

Now I am fired up even more!
  • Too bad the Morgan looks like it was either in a fire or in something corrosive....I have attributed it as a 1890 O VAM 10A

    Comet Morgan

so not only does Mary have the Morgan on the Fonzometer pegged...but now the danged thing busted the needle~~~~~~

    imageVTH3 ROUND 5 RESULTS image

    Digger: Zot
Time and location: Finland, Helsinki area, January 7, 2007
Weather: Cloudy, light rain, temperature 34 F
Equipment: White's MXT with 9.5" coil. Coin and jewelry mode, gain 9.5, no discrimination.
Duration: 4.5 hours. Trash targets dug and not included in the finds: Approx. 80

Things got off to a bad start: Like most of my frequent sites, today's site is within 10 miles of where I live, in the Helsinki area, so I move by bicycle:
    image

My previous three hunts had all been to this same site, and on two of them I got punctures. image
The first time I didn't notice anything, but my rear tire was flat the next morning. No big deal, a quick change and off we go.

I got one clean hunt in between, and then had another puncture. This happened on the way out, quite close to home, so I turned around and changed the tire (again the rear tire). I checked the outer tube very carefully for anything sharp still being stuck in it, but found nothing.

Today then, I got almost all the way to the site (within 20 minutes walking distance), when things started feeling a bit wobbly.
Argh! Not again! Oh yes, and this time it was the front tire imageimage
This time the puncture sucked big time, as it would be a long walk home..

Here are some general shots of the area. Forest and footpaths as usual.
There's a lot of scenery like this in Finland...

    image

    image

I didn't find anything at all in the first hour, and gradually I started feeling a bit of pressure.... I can hardly post a round with only trash. That would be an embarrassment to say the least! Hopefully I wouldn't have to stay out all night to avoid that.. image

After a small relocation, things started looking up a bit. A great signal with a solid 6 inches depth to it.
Well done, wazari777 (target #49), you are almost assured of a decent coin.

Indeed, you found a Finnish 5 penniä 1915, minted during the reign of Czar Nikolai II.
The date can be read in hand - just barely.
I had been in this area before, but the coin was just next to a tree, under some roots, and I probably hadn't been detecting carefully enough around the tree before, and hadn't picked up this signal.
    image

Didn't find anything else in this area, so I continued moving around. A bunch of ho-hum coins were popping up:

DesertRat (target #50), you found a Finnish 5 penniä, dateless (1918-1940)
    image

    dan8402 (target #51), you found a Finnish 5 penniä, dateless (1918-1940)
Grr.. I'm not exactly finding condition rarities today..
    image

marym (target #52), you found a Finnish 50 penniä 1963
    image

SilverDreams (target #53), you found a Finnish 5 penniä, dateless (1918-1940)
    image

Riccar (target #54), you found a Finnish 5 markkaa, dateless (1928-1946)
    image

    Spiffy469 (target #55), you found a Finnish 5 penniä 1919
Better condition than the string of dateless ones, but I can't seem to hit any older coins today..
    image

After this, I moved to another area where I've found several nice coins before, including silver. I've pounded this area quite thoroughly, but thought there could still be something left. I focused my search on less accessible areas - under trees and in thickets...
I got a few whiplashes across my face from branches and bushes that sprang up when I was shifting position while digging..

Almost immediately I got a deep signal.
I got excited for a second when I saw the shape of a ring, but that soon faded...

Omega (target #56), you found: A junk ring with a red plastic heart image
    Close, but no cigar!
The heart fell off and I was struggling to find it in my pouch afterwards. image
    image

At this point some people passed me at close distance.
They walked by quickly, probably wondering what I was doing down there in the bushes – down on all four (you couldn’t walk and swing the coil here, had to get under most of the branches), grunting and groaning like a wild animal.. image

Then, just a few feet away, a great signal, but rather faint. The MXT showed a high, slightly bouncing ID at 8 inches.
I was struggling to see the display, as it was located near my shoulder the way I was holding the detector.
This should be a good one! image

Indeed. This looks much better! image
The hole doesn't look deep in the picture, but the target is indeed at approx 8 inches.

    image

Congratulations Dockwalliper (target #57), you got silvered! You found a silver ring (0.813) with a leather logo
0.813 is older category of silver fineness that was (gradually) discontinued during the early 1970's, so this ring is at least not more recent than that. I’d wager that it’s a bit older though.
    image

Only about 5 yards away, but out of the thicket where the previous two rings were found, there was a shallow trash signal. Bang! - said the headphones. Ouch!
I've almost certainly been over this signal before, but back then there were also coin signals here, and I probably wouldn't have bothered with this one. The detector showed a pulltab at 1 inch. A lousy stinkin' signal.

This time I dug it - like a robot, next programmed to pick up the trash target about to be revealed..

image Oh my! I sure wasn't expecting this!

    image

Congratulations, walkerminus1 (target #58)- you lucky one, you struck gold today!
More specifically, you found a cool 14k gold ring with a snake design (adder). Date stamp 1963 (K7)
    YEAH!! image

    image

TheKidCollector1991 (target #59), you found a key - older type of Finnish key, Abloy brand
    image

And finally, 30AnvZ28 (target #60), you found: hmm... a brooch with a flower theme
This is actually a pretty cool piece, and is probably quite old.
    image

Now, if you wonder whether I always find this many rings (on land), the answer is a definite NO...
I've been to this site between 20 and 30 times before (it's a large area), and have never found gold there before - and only 2 silver rings if I remember correctly. I think the silver and gold rings were consecutive targets, so without those 5 minutes of glory, this hunt would have been disappointing..
I was hoping for nice coins and wasn't expecting jewelry at all. Funny how is goes sometimes.

    Here’s the summary:

    #49 (wazari777): Finnish 5 penniä 1915
    #50 (DesertRat): Finnish 5 penniä, dateless (1918-1940)
    #51 (dan8402): Another Finnish 5 penniä, dateless (1918-1940)
    #52 (marym): Finnish 50 penniä 1963
    #53 (SilverDreams): Finnish 5 penniä, dateless (1918-1940)
    #54 (Riccar): Finnish 5 markkaa, dateless (1928-1946)
    #55 (Spiffy469): Finnish 5 penniä 1919
#56 (Omega): A junk ring with a red plastic heart
#57 (Dockwalliper): Silver ring (0.813) with a leather logo
#58 (walkerminus1): 14k gold ring with a snake design (adder). Date stamp 1963
#59 (TheKidCollector1991): Key - older type of Finnish key, Abloy brand
    #60 (30AnvZ28): Brooch with a flower theme

    image

This will be hard to beat in my next round, but I'll do my best!

Hold on to your hats - the mighty Phut is next!! image
Minelab: GPX 5000, Excalibur II, Explorer SE. White's: MXT, PI Pro
