The Bronk is a popular guy right now, it just so happens to be the last piece of cardboard I need to complete the set!

Well, I blew the rest of my wad. (I know, I'm a poet)

Anyway, I gave myself a little bit of breathing room over that guy in the #11 spot. My wife and daughter are cursing your name now. If you had just left well enough alone when I was all alone in #10, I would have a lot more money right now. Damn you Jay, this is all your fault. (yes, that's my story and I'm sticking to it)

Thanks to Joe, Jason and Mike for the upgrades and for taking all my money. My scraps are available above, I need to sell them to buy some blankets, it gets cold on the couch!

I got economically stimulated last night at my bowling banquet. Me and a buddy played some pull tabs and hit a $300 and a $250. Not wanting to give up when I'm hot, I played $20 at lunch today and hit a $200. So my budget for the Nationals is right on track. image

By the way, you got checks already? I hope my wife and I get our checks soon. I could put my portion in the "nationals fund" as well!

Somehow I don't think you and the family are eating cat food to get by...like I am.
    U can have #10 4 a while......I have been concentrating on my 1965 FB set and other sports...Michael M
did offer me a few nice cards but I am gonna hold off. I wouldn't mind offering Jason $900 for his 52 J Str

By the way Dave...cute kid also......

Think of me as your shadow in the sun....always there behind you. Who knows..maybe I might like the #9 spot.

Actually, dap did me a favor and let me feel the warmth of the #9 spot. I'm sure it won't last more than a day or two, but it looks nice. Having a single digit next to my set name. I doubt I'll ever see it again. I don't know what he pulled from his set, but it was .10 from his rating.

Oh, and as far as eating cat food, I actually got to eat real food last night for the first time since the end of March! I gave my old electric stove to my uncle and my gas stove didn't get delivered until a couple weeks ago. I finally got the gas line inspection done last night so I could hook it up and use it finally! So I've been living on chicken breast on the George Foreman and pizza or Jimmy Johns delivery for the last 30 days. Maybe not cat food, but it gets old real fast.

By the way, once I add my Nagurski, I think that might be it for me. I'm looking forward to that 100% completion mark then we'll see where I'm at. Maybe I'll hand you #10 on a platter. image (Of course someone else might make a run and put us both back into the teens soon too, you never know. Pete and Mike are both climbing up the ladder again.

  • Anybody see the Sirius NFL Radio poll last week? They had a poll for the best guard in NFL history, John Hannah won, beating Alan Faneca???? by 8 votes. They each got about 35%, Randy Cross came in third (I do think he should have stronger HOF consideration), Gene Upshaw fourth with like 8%, Larry Little, Joe D. and Billy Shaw each got like 2%. Obviously this poll is skewed to a younger audience with little sense of historical perspective, but it makes for fun conversation here on the boards.

Anyone here win the Nagurski 2 from REA? I was holding that card in my hand on Saturday. A real beauty.

That's why you never put any stock into ''fan'' voting..Obviously, they simply choose the name recognition, just like Pro Bowl balloting. I wonder if Cross would have as many votes is he were not a current NFL announcer???Cross was a 2nd team AP All-Pro 3 times in his career..Thats it...Excellent player on some championship teams, and a borderline candidate. I agree he should get more consideration (maybe a semi-finalist?), but I don't think he is HOF material. If Randall McDaniel, Dick Stanfel and jerry Kramer can;t get in Randy Cross doesn't have a prayer!

Here are the top 10 O-Guards (Post-war) according to 1st team All-Pro selections as chosen by the Pro Football Writers of America...The writers aren't perfect with their voting either, but MUCH closer to reality than fans..

    1- John Hannah...8 time 1st team All-Pro OG
    2- Randall McDaniel...7 time 1st Team All-Pro OG
    3- Bruce Matthews...6 time 1st Team All-Pro OG (had a 7th 1st Team selection as a Center)
    4- Alan Faneca...6 time 1st Team All-Pro OG
5- Larry Allen...5 time 1st Team All-Pro OG (had a 6th selection as an OT)
    6- Larry Little...5 time 1st Team All-Pro OG
    7- Dick Stanfel...5 time 1st Team All-Pro OG
    8- Jerry Kramer...5 time 1st Team All-Pro OG
9- Gene Upshaw...5 time 1st Team All-Pro OG (2 of these 5 were AFL selections)
10- Billy Shaw...5 time 1st Team All-Pro OG (all 5 were AFL selections)

I didn't count HOFer Jim Parker in this, although he was an 8 time 1st team All-Pro..Reason being, he was chosen 4 times as an OT and 4 times as an OG. Talking strictly OG performance here.

    Thanks guys.

I might still throw in the towel once I get Bronko; we'll see. I emptied my pockets with my purchases over the last 5 months but I went from 78% complete to 99% and upgraded several key cards. Jasen, Art, Jason, the other Jason, Joe and others I probably am forgetting, all conspired to take my lunch money. #9 is feeling pretty comfy right now, even though it's not really my spot. I need to feel that 100% complete though. It's been over 3 years, I can't stop now that I'm this close. Even if the most expensive card is all that stands in my way. My Bronko fund is around $2k right now, hopefully by the time Nationals rolls around, it'll be closer to $4k so I can be in the PSA 3 or 4 market.
