Most of the original crew, I think wirelesslanman sold off after the first month or so..Some of his cards still reside in my collection. Anyone know what happened to him?

Shortly after the set went live, he announced he had cancer and was selling off his collection. I lost track of him, and he hasn't logged on to the message boards for several years.

Just an FYI that I posted these on the BST board for slightly higher (and stated to include shipping) than the VCP listed here, but these prices are still good for any of you guys. I'd rather sell to someone on this board so I posted lower here and thought it was customary to give those of us on this thread a little break on price. Someone accused me of being greedy b/c I posted different on BST (which again stated to include shipping, which this post did not), so I just wanted to set the record straight. Thanks.

  • Since I'm one of the new guys I guess I'll give myself a job around here. I'll be the guy that keeps this thread near the top of the page. It doesn't deserve to be buried under the other stuff. Whenever I see you guys are too busy to post I'll jump in with a random thought of madness to keep the others thinking that this thread is kick-ass.
Now for my though o' da day. Now that I've been picking up a few Minty HOF RC's, I must say a few have been disappointing. They don't look minty. I submitted better looking cards than some of these 9's and they obviously did not grade a 9. I have a sub ready to pop right now, POP ALREADY, that should have at least one 9 and as many as 4 but I guarantee I get zero. Poor me, maybe I should buy glasses.
New thought, we can all spend hundreds and thousands on cards......why can't we chip in and buy fight4olddc a scanner. I'm willing to go on vacation to his place and scan them all as long as he isn't too bossy.
    I say Good Day!
  • Grades just popped from my first ever review. Out of 16, I got 1 0.5 grade improvement.

    1969 Csonka went to a 8.5.

It will be interesting to see what the stickers say.

    Ladies

Well the wife is out of town so I spent about 5 hours last night looking at every card I own with a Lupe donated to the cause by the incomprable Jay Groat.

So I set about 30 aside I think have a shot. Im going to take a second look at them tongiht, then take them to Rose city Sports in the morning for Will Jaimet to look at for final review, then send them off to PSA Wed AM.

So when you look at a PSA 9 under a lupe, then a PSA 8, its interesting how those two grades are almost a coin flip apart. I also am sending in about 40 PSA 9 1984 topps for some bumps too, the differences in those is almost unnoticeable.

Good luck with your bumps Joe. I hope you have better luck than some of the guinea pigs that have gone before you.

I've got 2 new review subs in. Total of 32 cards. I went 12/61 last go round, so we shall see on this one. Many of them are from the same sub, being RE-subbed. About half of the 32 are going in for the first time.

Not sure what advice I can give to those of you who aren't getting bumps other than to look over your cards very carefully. Dan (Yakbigam) did pretty well on his recent reviews as well, so the bumps are out there. But if everyone got 50% bumps on every review sub, the process would become saturated.

Best of luck to you Joe, hope you pull some nice bumps. Getting an outside opinion from someone with a good eye (like Will J.) is another smart option.

My condolences to anyone who's gotten less than 10% bumpage on a review sub..Any less than that, I agree is a waste of money. Hasn't happened to me yet, and I'm sure if it did a couple of times, I would re-evalute future decisions on what to send in and what not to send in.

  • I looked over the cards with a loupe prior to sending and only sent in cards that I thought would be worth $$ sending in. I have always been a corners guy, not centering so I was hoping that I would be successful at getting bumps. One more and I would have been happy.

The sub # is 634886. I shared it.

I thought that the 1971 Bradshaw and 1963 Jones were the nicest of the bunch.

I figured if I could get 0.5 on the Staubach, Millner, or St Clair, I was in for a big pay day.

  • I really glad I didn't use the free gradings from re-upping with PSA!
  • Well just had my next group pop .17 cards all at the $100 to $499 range went 3 for 17 but with that said 1 was a non hof rookie but a upgrade on a nice skins card for me and 1 was a Wilcox went from a 8 to 8.5 i already have a Wilcox 9 so it is available if anyone needs it.
The lone card that upgrades my hof rookie set was a 55 AA Benny Friedman Went from 8 to 8.5
  • JasP24JasP24 Posts: 4,645 ✭✭✭
Art, congrats..17+% bumpage on that sub isn't bad at all. I'd be interested in the Friedman 8.5 if available and could include my PSA 8 in the deal.

Let me know if it is available!

There's a couple things you can do. One is to familiarize yourself with the finalists and semifinalists over the past couple years that have come close but are not yet in. Players like Kuechenberg, Guy, Gradishar, Hayes, Grimm, Reed, McDaniel, Carter, D. Thomas and Dent all seem have a good chance.

Next I'd look at the upcoming first-time eligibles to see who the locks will be. You seem to have a jump on that.

Then I'd check out the future HOF'er sets (modern and senior). The senior selections always seem to be a crapshoot, so it's nearly impossible to say who they'll be from year to year. Hopefully they'll pick better candidates from now on. The Goldberg selection was a complete waste this year. The modern set though is a great resource.

    Hope this helps!

Got a quick question for the HOF guys, what do you think the chances are of Beattie Feathers and Phil Simms making it to Canton?

    Doc
  • shagrotn77shagrotn77 Posts: 5,577 ✭✭✭✭
Beattie Feathers, I have no idea, so I can't comment. As a Giants fan, I've always felt that Simms deserved at least SOME HOF consideration, whereas he has received basically none to this point. I do think he's a far better candidate than Stabler. I wouldn't put him in the HOF, but it would be nice to hear his name at least in the discussion among the voters.

    Doc >>

Feathers is along the same lines as Marshall Goldberg. Very short career back in the old days. Based on what happened to Goldberg this year, I think it will be a few before Feathers gets any kind of chance. But hey, you can never rule him out.

What kills Phil Simms is that the Giants had success without him..And Parcells (HOF Coach) never felt strongly about Simms as his QB. While he has nice stats, and a resume worthy of a borderline candidate, I don't think he will get in before Stabler. The Raiders wouldn't have won as many games in the 70s without him...The Giants did win without Simms.

I relate Simms more closely to Boomer Esiason and Joe Theisman. Fine QBs, borderline HOF candidates, but probably won't have a prayer until 2050 when the Senior committee tries to find some old overlooked borderline guy (like Goldberg was this year) to try and put in...

Yeah, I was pretty surprised at some of my PD's as well...Most of the ones marked corners, I could see exactly why they didn't bump. A couple of the centerings were in the "high end for the grade" percentages. I've got a couple of review orders at PSA on the $12 and $5 specials. The $12 order should eb complete sometime this month. Many are 2nd timers from my last sub, so should be interesting.

Don't worry Jay, your next upgrade will put the distance between us again. Still fun to see myself at #10, even if for a short time and under these circumstances.

That being said, I have a PSA 7 Tarkenton, PSA 5 Groza, PSA 6 Fears and PSA 7 Mix potentially available if anyone is interested.
