Wow, one of my other subs just popped too!

    My free gradings from renewal.

1 1948 BOWMAN 104 BRUCE SMITH N/A 2 --Bought raw from sims, described as VG/Ex. Confused on this one as there isn't a single crease or surface wrinkle. I was expecting a 4 or 5 grade.
2 1950 BOWMAN 8 MAC SPEEDIE N/A 6 --Bought raw from HendersonCards, described as ExMt
    3 1955 TOPPS ALL-AMER. 66 BRUISER KINARD N/A 5 --bought raw off ebay, described as Ex/Mt
    4 1966 PHILADELPHIA 45 GENE HICKERSON N/A 7 --Bought from a board member
    5 1967 PHILADELPHIA 80 DAVE ROBINSON N/A 8 --Bought raw off ebay for $5.
6 1986 TOPPS 161 JERRY RICE N/A 8 --From my rack break from BBCE, thought I might sneak a 9 with this one.

Very nice, especially on the Robinson and Speedie

I have been looking into getting those free grades for being at 75%. I have numerous sets above 75%, including many basketball, and I have never requested the free gradings. I also need to register alot more sets included all the decades sets and 75 anniv team, just to get more freebies. I have alot that I could send in.

Make sure you request them all at once and ask that they put them all on a single submission form. That's what I just had and ended up with 29 freebies. They will only put 15 line items on each form though. So I had two forms total. A heck of a lot better than paying return shipping on each card individually though!

I'm happy with the Speedie and the Robinson especially! The Smith is for my Heisman set, but I'll have to look that one over again. There weren't any wrinkles anywhere. The Hickerson is nice enough in a 7. An 8 would have been stellar but for the $8 I paid for the Hickerson.... you can't beat a 7. image

My Motley arrived today and it looks much nicer than the ebay scan. I think a nicer scan would have brought a higher price.

LOL.... wouldn't you agree though? Here is the ebay pic. I think all white bordered cards should be scanned against a black background. It just makes the card stand out more. For some reason, the 2 bottom corners look much better in my scan.

Solid cards. Look like 5's or maybe 6's judging from the scans.
The seller sure uses a lot of exclamation points. I count over 30 in the one auction. I hate exclamation points.

That's what I figured Dave. On the first scan on the Motley, the bottom corners looked almost rounded. Your larger scan looks much better. Nice card and buy.

Added a couple more HOF'ers to my Collectors Showcase if anyone is interested.

1973 Topps Jack Ham PSA 7
1973 Topps Art Shell PSA 7
1971 Topps Willie Lanier PSA 6
1966 Philly Bob Brown PSA 5

    ..and a few other cards.

Most of the stuff is pretty cheap but will fill some holes.

Edited to say: I notice a few of us (all gathering around the mid-section of the HOF set) have made some substantial jumps the last week or two. Dave, Marc, Mike and myself have all been updating. I know Marc was around 12 for a while, but now the four of us are sitting right next to each other. It's nice to see Joe (publius) making the jump into the top 20 as well. (Congrats by the way) Fun to see guys who regularly post on this thread making strides.

I also have to give a big thank you to Joe (publius again) for the PSA 9 Largent addition to my collection. Thank You - Thank You - Thank You.

No problem, really happy to help. As you know, Im looking to upgrade that card myself image

Nothing but class acts on the boards, moreso on this thread. The longer Im around, the more of you I have the privelege of dealing with. Mad has been instrumental with helping me build this set, Jason hooks me up with great cards and input (after he upgrades), Mike is awesome, and of course, you Josh. I think Im going to cry.

bcd-I've asked the same question. That account started out buying up stuff I was chasing. Most of my cards I try and get at the highest grade before the big price jump. Sometimes that means an 8 or a 9, sometimes that means a 5 or a 6. Lately, I've been adding stuff to my watch list just to see what it will go for and melo has been winning a fair share of them lately. No idea who it is, but I have a feeling if they list the set (assuming it isn't already) It'll make a nice move into the top 15 or 20 based on what I've seen.

Joe, you'll find most guys on here, particularly on this thread, are very good guys. Many of them have been instrumental to my learning and my collection as well. Marc, Scott and Jason have all helped me out on numerous occassions. Dave seems to be my closest competition as Mike and Marc seem to have much deeper pockets than I do. Plus, Dave and I are in the same boat with baby's due any day now. By the way Dave, I was watching the lamaze/labor and delivery video tonight... Good thing I'm watching it. image I would have been asking questions and then stood around like a bump on a log otherwise. image And don't worry, any spending you do after the baby gets here will put you past me. My spending will cease completely, at least for a few months until the wife goes back to work.

On a side note, I did pick up a nice Buck Buchanan PSA 7 and Jackie Smith PSA 7 tonight. The Buchanan is an upgrade from my PSA 5 and the Smith is a card I've been looking for forever. Now I have every HOF'er from 1967 to present. This one card was the sole gap. Feels like a nice milestone. I have 4 more upgrades coming this week and I'm buying two more upgrades this Friday. Then I'm done for a while I think.

The baby will take time, effort and money. I'll be too occupied with her to focus on the set much. I'll still poke my head in when I'm at work but I'm sure my presence on here as well as ebay, will become pretty scarce. I will be back though. I want to finish every set I've started. I'm over 75% on the vast majority of them. In fact, of 571 cards I needed, I currently only need 77. I don't have all of them in holders yet, some are raw at PSA, some are raw sitting in front of me. But I do plan on getting them all...eventually. Problem is, the last 15% of my HOF set is going to cost me as much as thte first 85%. So the additions to this set will be very limited and slow going as well. I'll still look for my upgrades that won't cost me an arm and a leg of course, but there won't be a couple of sport kings or goudeys being added each month, that's for sure. image

Sure is a fun set to build.

I thinks it something in the boards b/c my wife and I just had a daughter in Dec. My buying pretty much stopped until this past month ( tax refund and bonus). I still keep seeing my set drop almost daily. I think you all should keep pumping out the kids so I can move up. I was at 17th a few minutes ago, but sure it will change in a couple of minutes.
Oh well, it's not what place you come in, all that matters is that you finish the race.

    WOW.....that was almost inspiring.

Wolf, that is HILARIOUS! Where in the heck did you get that???? Too cool..lol

Those were the good old days weren't they..I was picking up PSA 7 1948 Leaf RC's (like Steve Van Buren) for under $150...AlanAllen is right though, PRE-2003, the cards were even cheaper...Thing is, I don't think we are anywhere near topping out in the football card market..Especially with the vintage stuff..

I was actually REALLY happy to get that Shaw for only $600..My snipe was much higher...

    Here are some recent pickups.

    Groza

    Wilson

    Bethea

    Harris

    Canadeo

    Bailey

    Moss

    Tomlinson

Probably paid on the high end for the Canadeo, but I have missed out on many lately and just bite the bullet. I think I did pretty well on most of the others though, price wise. Tomlinson Chromes are tough to find on Ebay.

Now if I can get PSA or the previous owner of my Campbell RC to remove it from their set that would be great. I have had it for over two weeks now and have tried to add it a few times and it still hasnt been removed from the previous owners set(s).

Please tell me you bid way over the $78 mark for that Groza. I was going to bid $115 and my in-laws showed up. My 5 snipes were used up and I wasn't at my PC. I was bummed about missing out on that one. Great looking 6, and it would have fit nicely in my set. Those Tomlinsons are tough to find on ebay, I don't know why. I am still kicking myself for not snatching up a gorgeous raw one at the local card shop late last year for $129. He wasn't added to the Chargers set yet and I didn't have any real reason to buy it. Dang it.

The rest of the cards you did fine on. The Canadeo is a little overpriced, (I paid $55 for mine a few months back) but it looks to have good color and decent enough centering to cross. FYI, a PSA 10 Moss should only set you back about $250. I think I paid $240-ish for mine. Though, now that he's a Patriot, it might be more. I haven't checked. Good pickups though.

moss has been flying lately. i should have tried harder to pick one up before the draft. i liked the canadeo a lot myself in terms of overall eye appeal. i know a paid a little more than normal but i kept getting outbid on all the others and this one was a BIN. sorry to say my snipe was set for $79. my snipe for the tomlinson and moss were well over what they sold for, just wanted those cards now as I am off on vacation on thursday to europe for three weeks. i also just missed out on a 71 willie lanier.

Speaking of Tomlinsons, I was lucky enough to snatch up my LT2 PSA 10 Topps Chrome rookie one morning shortly after it was listed in an eBay store. It was just dumb luck, because I don't search for Tomlinsons very often. It's still the only 10 I've seen offered on eBay. I thought I overpaid for it at the time (around 2-3 months ago), but I've since pulled a 180. I think it will end up being a bargain.

Shag: I actually saw that Tomilinson PSA 10 for $600 before you got to it. I'm still kicking myself for not buying it. I thought my wife might be unhappy if I spent that kind of money. I told her about it and I was right. Then I told her it was probably worth $1500 (just a guess). She did a 180 and said "why didn't you buy it!" In the same week I hesitated on a 1972 Namath PSA 10 with a BIN of $220. I vowed never again will I leave thosand dollar bills lying around image

To all you All-Time-Packers guys. I just went to add my new 1967 Phil. Dave Robinson PSA 8 to the all time packers set ... it's not there! Is it time he is added? How can he not be an all-time packer and yet be on the senoir HOF short list?

Mike-I replied on your "Help me take down MOSH" thread. On the Dave Robinson, I was surprised as well. If he does get added, it won't be until after the 5/31 deadline. I picked up mine off ebay (raw) for $5 when we decided on the future hof set. Had it graded already and it came back an 8. Gotta love that.

WOW -- much better than the $72 I paid for Robinson. I need to get into raw cards. I see you guys creating some real value. I have about 1000 cards ready to submit to PSA but its mostly modern baseball.

$72 eh? I got a great deal then I guess. Sometimes you get lucky. Believe me, I get far more rags than gems when buying raw. Whether it be from sims, ebay or sportlots or any other place. A scan is nice, but being able to see it in person is much, much better. I've seen some guys spend some good coin on raw stuff on ebay only to have it come back trimmed, miscut, or with a small surface wrinkle that wasn't visible. It happens. I've gotten a few goodies off ebay though. My PSA 7 Hickerson was a raw buy (thanks Gabbs), my psa 10 Jason White (Heisman set) was raw, my PSA 8 Jim Taylor rc was raw for $22. But then I've bought lots of 5-10 raw cards (89 score, the Leroy Butlers, some 88Topps etc) and gotten nothing that would grade above a 6 or 7 many times. Shrug.

I just noticed that melomelisa was bidding on a card I have my sights set on, decided to check history on "her?" latest purchases, its pretty impressive.

A lot of stuff from Dan at Yak, and mint state. Looks like a cool set coming together.

I somehow didn't see that Tomlinson either. I think it went for a good price. There just aren't that many 10's out there.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
