Jay, that's not the official team but pretty close. Based on All-Pro voting this decade, (not counting this year obviously with a possibly 50 votes after this season still out there) this will be the team:

Being in the hardcore "buy" phase while actively building this set for the past several months, I've been delighted to increasingly find some pockets of unexpected affordability. If one can do it, it seems the ideal time to buy or hold, not sell. That is probably due in large part to a markedly increased unemployment rate.
Unfortunately, I know of one strong collector friend myself whom has lost his gainful, well-paying job. I see that what happens next can cause one to cease buying and begin selling. This has shown me firsthand how just one job loss affects simple supply / demand economics that invariably dictate price points. Just one job loss adds one (+1) to the supply side while at the same time subtracts one (-1) from the demand side. That's what has fueled me to continue to buy at a faster rate than expected, and why if I end up with duplicates I just place them into a 2nd Football HOF RCs set.
Of course this is only the way I see things. It's why I'll remain an bullish buyer and sell little. To me it appears a much better time to buy vintage football now than 3-5 years ago, and it also seems to be a much better time to buy than it will be 3-5 years from now.
The fact that bright, dependable, industrious persons lose their job is unfortunate and I genuinely feel for they and their families' plight. However, that unemployed person forced to sell is going to sell whether I buy or not. They want my bid anyway. They'll keep getting it.
My latest monthly column was just released, and for this month I wrote about a favorite card from our set. It appears in the October edition of Mike Denero's Vintage Sportscards newsletter and blog.
<< <i>dave you must be referring to joe namath. To this day I have not seen any QB that cold match his arm. Elway was close.
If that is going to be the all decade team I need to get going on acquiring those cards. >>
Jay:
You must not have watched Testeverde and Cunningham. I think both had better deep arms than Namath, just not the long touch. Vick may have one of the most powerful arms of all, but he's only slightly more accurate that Jamarcus Russell...
<< <i>so if Darren Sharper's play continues at a decent level this year, any chance he starts creeping into a possible HOF slot in the future?? >>
I'll second Sharper. Also, when does Hines Ward enter this discussion? He's still performing at a very high level. When he first came into the league, the Steelers were clearly a run first team, but now, not so much. He's seeing an uptick in his receiving stats as he's getting older, actually. Two SB titles, one SB MVP, as well. Pretty good case, IMO.
If Sharper can make another Pro Bowl and/or an All-Pro team, yes he becomes a legit candidate. Short of that, I think he joins the long list of great Safeties who will be overlooked come HOF induction time. Consider that Steve A-water hasn't even made the top 25, nor has LeRoy Butler...Johnny Robinson and Cliff Harris never made the cut as modern candidates. Tough position to get in, but his INT totals and TD return totals will help. But IMO he needs another season where he is selected as one of the best in the NFL. Seems to be on his way this year, but 3/4 of the season left to go...
Ward is already a legit candidate. I'd like to see another Pro Bowl and/or All-Pro on his resume as well, but even at this point I think he will get serious consideartion when his time comes.

<< <i>Jared Allen is looking pretty good too. 4 1/2 sacks last night. The guy is a beast!
Dave >>
Allen might be the best DE in the league. He's a difference maker who makes plays against the run and pass. What amazes me the most is his ability to make tackles down field on passing plays.
Super Bowl XXVIII: Buffalo Bills vs Dallas Cowboys - Running back Emmitt Smith rushed for 132 yards and 2 touchdowns earning Super Bowl MVP honors as the Cowboys defeated the Bills 30-13 to win their second consecutive NFL title.
<< <i>Jared Allen is looking pretty good too. 4 1/2 sacks last night. The guy is a beast!
Dave >>
Sacks...Another overlooked stat, much like INT totals. Kevin Greene has 160, not in the HOF..Doleman 150, Dent and John Randle 137 each..None in the HOF.
Just as Adrian Peterson looks the part of a HOF, so does Jared Allen...They both certainly are playing at a HOF level. Now they just have to sustain that play over a long period. Remains to be seen on both, but man the Vikes were fun to watch last night on offense, defense and special teams....

Scott No picking on Raiders players. I think us fans have endured enough over the last 3 years. On Russell...Al Davis is the lighthouse for the ship that will never come. Namath clearly had a better deep and accurate arm that both the guys you mentioned. Yes, I saw them also.
Now another claim....Who was the most accurate passer of all time? excluding the guys pre 60's. I would have to say Ken Stabler. He didn't have a gun by any means. If any of you guys are old enough to remember seeing the show superstars on tv. One of the events was throwing a football thru a moving tire along a grid line. Once the tire was out there 30+ yards only stabler and griese could throw it thru the middle.
If that list for the decade is the list I'm in real trouble...don't have most of the cards yet.

Steve Young may have had one of the best and most accurate arms from the line of scrimmage to 30 yards out. I used to love watching him drop the ball over his WR's shoulder. I bet he could drop a pass over a wall 30 yards away and into a basket a foot away from the wall...
Alright, for a sports card collector do I have the dream wife or what? I was looking at my set online recently. While she looked over my shoulder she asked, "You're still in 22nd place? It looks like you need to buy some more cards." If that isn't "the go ahead" then what is?
I have added some more cards in recent weeks, and have a bunch in the mail including Mile High winnings that should move me up the rankings. (I really never stopped buying cards anyway). Here's one of my favorites that I won recently. It's a classic action pose, and truly one of this set of 199 cards' dopest images and one hot card:
I must consider that my wife and this 1950 Bowman Joe Perry are two things in the 49th State that look awfully good for their age. Is there anything else around here like that...?
I recently came across the profile of Jim Benton and am really surprised that he hasn't garnered strong support to be inducted into the HOF. He was named to the 1940's team of the decade and retired and the #2 all time receiving yardage leader behind Hutson (although a distant 2nd) but he led the NFL on several occasions in all categories (yards, receptions and TDs).
Any ideas why he is overlooked?
Rgs,
Greg M.

<< <i>Jim Benton dosen't have a RC. The only card he has is 1963 Stancraft Playing Cards #9H and it is not recognized by Beckett as his RC >>
I guess that makes it a moot point for our purposes here..lol
But to answer Greg's question, it is the same as Wistert. The HOF worthy pre-war, pre-modern era players seem to have been exhausted. The voters are getting younger every year. Selecting Marshall Goldberg a few years back and then having him not go in..I'd say it doesn't look good for any of those guys moving forward. Benton was a good receiver in an era when there weren't many if any others. So his 2 All-Pro selections don't carry much weight. He was Bob Waterfield's #1 target when the Rams were a championship team though. But, I think Waterfield was the HOF caliber player there, and Benton was simply a good receiver in a great situation. Something hardly any other pass catdhers could say in the 40's.
I think having Wayne Millner in the HOF is about equal to having benton there. And I hope the HOF Committee doesn;t make that mistake again, as to me Millner is one of the weakest HOF players currently residing in Canton.
Just my opinions of course,
Jason

Some readers here probably saw that card lately on "a popular online auction website". Recently I've done some reading about McAfee, a player that was still "with us" until he passed on at age 90 just this year. It seems that outside of Luckman, great Bears players referenced only harken back as far as Sayers and Butkus. Much like the '35 Hinkle I wrote about, the '48 McAfee shows him in what some may see as a "sissified" punting/kicking position. McAfee is remembered as a very fast halfback, pioneering the use of low cut shoes for speed and evading tacklers.
The more NFL Network programming that I watch, the more I find just how widespread the groundswell of support is for the potential HOF Induction of Packers Offensive Lineman Jerry Kramer. This HOF void seems to border on outrage for some. I was surprised at how emphatic Steve Sabol was in driving this point home. I guess Kramer's HOF void is founded on what many believe to be "too many" HOFers already representing those great Lombardi Packers teams sprinkled thoughout our set. One HOF voter says fully one-quarter of his mail is Kramer lobbying. That's probably enough on someone whom does not (currently) belong to our set.
Greg M., I recently left a comment in your set. I enjoy your scans both sides and the accompanying comments about how you came to acquire some of your cards are interesting. Fine work.
Nice stuff Keith! Im a big fan of Sarah Palin ( strictly her looks though )
What did you think I was writing about here, Paul? By looking good for the age, I was writing about that Alaska quarter - a full year old and apparently still in Brilliant Uncirculated condition! OK you're right, I wasn't writing about the quarter...
Dave, thanks for the compliment. That means something coming from a collector of your rank and experience.
On this McAfee, I went for it because the pros seemed to outweigh the cons for the 1948 Leaf issue: Pros + : Clean, bright color, pretty well centered, white borders. Cons - : Just a little bleed-through, one corner toned.
I've had a couple registrants let me know they're not sure how to post scans here. I had to guess for a while before I figured it out. I'd be happy to help anyone. If you want to PM me, then we can go over it on the phone.
OK, I admit it. I'm one of the dummies that couldn't figure the whole scan posting :0 Thanks Keith for your help.
So here it goes
I love the 55 topps set, but this is my favorite's from the set. This card use to be in an 8 holder, I honestly don't know why it didn't bump to a 9 . I can't complain, but the guy who originally got this card graded an 8 had to be scratching his head.
Ive been meaning to call you to discuss, so whats up with all the ebay listings of your high end HOF RC's? (spam) Your not selling off to get out are you dude, that would be a left hook to our hobby here! Some very nice cards your offering up there, am i to presume you have the inside track on a Largent psa 10, and your liquidating everything to get it?
It was a banner day at the old Squires house tonight. Got some cards today that MAD and I have been working on for awhile, thanks much Marc, very appreciated my friend!
Traded away my 48 leaf Dudley 8 for a 48 leaf Bobby Layne 7. Seems an even swap, until you realize the Layne isnt labeled properly, its actually a 1/1 Red pants variation. Gotta give a shout out to my mohawk havin' MF'er buddy OTW for verifying my suspicions. Scott is all things Leaf, thats for sure. I owe you a beer at the nat'l this year buddy, thanks!
So, Im down to needing TWO cards, both of which I used to have at one point. Namath and Dudley. I can see the finish line my fellow collectors!
Well Mr. Squires my warm congrats on the new pickups. Your bloodhound nose has been after that matson for at least a year. Your set is truly museum quality and sits very well next to Jon's.
Not so sure on that leaf variation...looks to me like the blue jersey jumping out of a red mirror variation. Red Pants? But then again...what do I know
I'm stoked...the Yankees just came back and scored 5 runs in the 7th inning the alcs for the lead.

"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
It looks like it was raining scans around here a few days ago. Now that's the kind of weather I like!
Those four cards posted - the Don Hutson, Ollie Matson, Dutch Clark, and Bobby Layne - probably all qualify as in the top third of my favorite cards in this set. Nearly any '35 Chicles are handsome, and I've always found the '52 Bowman Matson card to have a "canine" look to it. Aesthetically, Matson is probably a Top 10'er for me. Thanks for sharing the scans fellas.
J-Sizzle, your Set Registry Rating of 8.16 is scintillating, your pursuit indefatiguable. You're straight knockin' peeps out. Your rating nearly doubles my humble sum. Your set has moved from "great" to "All-Time" and "museumesque". A big congrats here.
Pfffffff....I've had a rough week: I bought a nice Deacon Jones RC PSA 8 that arrived damaged by USPS, and recently discovered that I bought a fake Wilt Chamberlain RC late last month (which I wrote about in the Sports Cards forum). Finally, a boneheaded tenant's oil spill at one of my properties topped off the rough week. -Keith
thanks for the shout outs ladies, always much appreciated. Thanks again to MAD for, well pretty much everything- getting me on the right path when I started this set and hooking me up with quite a few deals along the way. I have made some great friends in this hobby over the years and Im lucky enough to have quite a few of your phone numbers in my rolodex. There are quite a few of us out there who look out for each other, talk for hours on the phone about the hobby and life in general, thats a great network to have.
Im just keepin' the spot warm for you Keith, like we talked about the other day, my collecting goal is a complete run from 35 chicle all the way up through 88 topps (Largents last year). I dig the HOF RC set, but its not really my #1 focus. Ill play a little bit of upgrade game if the price is right for a card, but the general guide for my set is, if I have a scan of a card up, thats pretty much it
48 leaf is probably the #1 set i would love to complete someday to be honest. My dream set would be the mayo. Someday guys, someday
Everyone have a good football Sunday. Seahawks have a bye this week, so nothing big going on

Wow, you read my mind. He has "picked" up his game the past three years. I was also thinking about Ty Law inclusion to our modern set. >>
Yeah, i think Woodson is helping his case and is getting much closer to HOF status. He should probably be included in our modern set vote in January. We'll see if he makes the Pro Bowl or All-Pro first before deciding. I would like to see one more of each. I feel the same about Ronde Barber.
Ty Law, IMO, doesn't have enough individual accolades. Same can be said for most of the top players from the current Patriots dynasty. Will be interesting to see how the voters treat those Patriot players like Law, Bruschi, Seymour, Rodney Harrison...

Anyone seriously interested in the 48l Layne psa 7 that just hit ebay, please PM or email me so we dont butt heads on it.

you must be referring to joe namath.

Allen might be the best DE in the league. He's a difference maker who makes plays against the run and pass. What amazes me the most is his ability to make tackles down field on passing plays.
Super Bowl XXVIII: Buffalo Bills vs Dallas Cowboys -
Running back Emmitt Smith rushed for 132 yards and 2
touchdowns earning Super Bowl MVP honors as the Cowboys
defeated the Bills 30-13 to win their second consecutive NFL
title.
<< <i>Jared Allen is looking pretty good too. 4 1/2 sacks last night. The guy is a beast!

No picking on Raiders players.

Steve Young was darn good at the tire too.

On this McAfee, I went for it because the pros seemed to outweigh the cons for the 1948 Leaf issue:
Pros + : Clean, bright color, pretty well centered, white borders.
Cons - : Just a little bleed-through, one corner toned.
I've had a couple registrants let me know they're not sure how to post scans here. I had to guess for a while before I figured it out. I'd be happy to help anyone. If you want to PM me, then we can go over it on the phone.

Thanks Keith for your help.
Traded away my 48 leaf Dudley 8 for a 48 leaf Bobby Layne 7. Seems an even swap, until you realize the Layne isnt labeled properly, its actually a 1/1 Red pants variation. Gotta give a shout out to my mohawk havin' MF'er buddy OTW for verifying my suspicions. Scott is all things Leaf, thats for sure. I owe you a beer at the nat'l this year buddy, thanks!
So, Im down to needing TWO cards, both of which I used to have at one point. Namath and Dudley. I can see the finish line my fellow collectors!
joe
Great to see you got your cards. That Matson has to be one of the toughest 8's to get in the set.
By the way, I'm not getting out of the HOF set. Just thinning the herd a bit.
Dan
Well done. It was great to help you out.
Thank you.

But then again...what do I know

-Keith
