I love this date and prices on this date, IMO, make it a true sleeper. This recent pickup, (I'm hoping to have it "in hand" in a few days), is a nice original 1908-S Barber half, certified by PCGS, VF-20. This date, in VF, has a BCCS rarity rating of R4, same as the 96-O, 96-S, 97-O, 97-S, 01-S, and 04-S, but priced not much more than a common date Barber half in VF.
I was browsing Teletrade this evening and came accross this nice looking 1895-P Half; its in an NGC 55 holder - and I hope it'll cross at PCGS when I end up submitting it.
EDIT TO ADD:
Check out the upcoming March 28th [ Sunday ] Teletrade auction.
If you collect XF Barber Quarters and VG to AU Halves, you'll be very pleasantly surprised at the offering.
Good luck and Happy Hunting !!

I thought this was a nice looking coin for the grade and my experience with the images at DLRC is such that most of their images never portray the true essence of the coin. I have yet to be disappointed once I've gotten a coin in hand.
I plan on having my Quarters professionally imaged and I'll run a side by side comparison when I can.
Until then...

Nice looking quarter Mike. I also agree that coins bought from DLRC seem to look better in hand. I haven't bought a bunch but have yet to be disappointed. I know your 93-S is a pretty one!

BFJohnson is referring to one of the highlights to my Half Dollar set, and one that came from BFJohnson himself:
I had a very lovely 1893-S in PCGS 55 - purchased from Barberfanatic in raw state [ old PCGS 55 insert was with it ]: and this great coin now resides in BFJohnson's collection.
BFJ - I for one am looking forward to see your newest addition.... when does she arrive ? June ???
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
As an aside, my sets are almost exactly where I want them. Looking forward to getting the raw Dime submission back too.
My BST Thread seems to have really worked as I have gotten numerous leads and offers over the past couple of years.
Hope everyone had a very enjoyable Easter.
I was tracking this 1896-O in PCGS 30 on eBay - the auction just ended. If I didn't already have two VF's [ 30 & 35 ] myself - I would have bid on this one as well. I thought it was a very pleasing example.
This just closed at $909.00. This looks closer to VF 35 to me:

I received a new one for my harem yesterday, and will give a shoutout again to kalshacon for a wonderful BST transaction. I tried to get a decent photgraph of her last night, to no avail ... but, here she is nonetheless

Just got finished setting up here in Santa Clara this evening. I wanted to share a newp from Ft. Worth and you may have already seen the guess the grade Todd put up on this coin. To be honest I am not sure I have seen a nicer barber quarter as to overall eye appeal. The strike is well above average, the toning stunning, and although Todd does a great job, its better in hand.
So in case you didn't see the other thread here it is:
Mike yes that's the coin. The prettiest Barber Quarter I have ever seen. The photos are not bad but a bit light on here. The colors are richer and nice target toning on both sides. The reverse even a bit nicer toned then the obverse. Plus a strike that is incredible for an "O" mint coin. NGC66 CAC.
Here is a rather cool 1892 Barber Half in PCGS MS63 I bought in Ft. Worth. Nice original surfaces with some color. AND the coolest die break that is getting pretty significant starting at the middle of the wing and down into the arrow cluster. I haven't seen such a cool die crack like this on a Barber Half before. If this were a Peace Dollar VAM it would be hugely significant to the VAM guys out there.
Alas we don't have that sort of thing much in Barbers although there are some neat varieties out there, just not widely published or as well known. Maybe we should study all die pairs, die states, write a book and get this going. Maybe we can name we can name them HAH's for HAyes and Holsonbake or something if Mike collaborates with me. LOL
Here is the half with some cool pics from Todd (Blu62Vette). Thank you Todd.
I cracked out eight PCGS graded coins for the Dansco album. The album is finally finished and if I do say so myself, looks very nice. I'd like to upgrade a few things but have no burning desire to do too much upgrading in the raw set, at least not at the moment anyway.
I did receive this 1893-S from Tombr today and I might decide to crack it out - and sell off the old one.
Nice coin too, and thanks again, Tom !!

Received the 1900-S Dime in PCGS 58 from Kevin Parsons - thanks Kevin, I absolutely love the reverse toning !!
Also received the 1914-S Half in PCGS 64 from Tim Hansch - thanks again for offering me this and the other Halves - but only the 14-S was on my Upgrade List. I would have loved to grab the others as well.

Glenn - I really like this coin. Great images, too. You need to write a book!
It's a very tough date in VF.. I am not shocked. But the prices of these have been a bit flaky of late, I paid $550 for my VF35 04-O, a few days later, same coin barely brought $500 on eBay, while a few months before another one broke $1,000 (A week after I paid $1,150 with juice for a VF25 04-S from Heritage).

I was wondering if any of my fellow Barber collectors have or will be sending in some of their coins to PCGS to try for the secure + grade? PCGS said that only the very best coins will get the + grade and from what I have read and heard they are sticking with this criteria. If your coins are not the finest or nearly the finest known for the grade, then you maybe wasting your money sending them in.
I do believe that this new service is great for high end collectors and will be widely accepted over time. Maybe I was just lucky but I sent in three Barbers and all three came back in + holders. Has anyone else sent in any or have plans to do so?
3 for 3 that's awesome! I assume they were not raw and already in PCGS. I haven't sent any in and may or may not in the future with an exception of a 21-D half that grades too low to get the + designation. I figured it was still a good chance to get scanned and use the CC Special. Please post pics if you get a chance.
Hello Brandon, You may remember me from Mike's great road trip last August, I was stop #1 on his drive up the coast. I have images of two of the coins taken before they were sent to PCGS for the secure service. Maybe some others will tell us of there plans or results.
