I really like my 1897-S which I bought raw from JJ Teaparty back in 2002 as an AU 58. I have always felt their grading it an AU 58 was gradeflation [ your raw coins always are a grade or two higher than the "professional grade"]. Regardless of what they called it, I liked the coin and thought it would grade a 55. Eventually, I submitted it to PCGS for grading and was a bit disappointed it only got a 53.
There are still no 1897-S Halves in a PCGS 58 holder; I have looked at every low end MS in another TPG holder - hoping for the right coin to be entombed in a MS 61 - or - 62 holder that is clearly an AU 58. No luck so far. Most of what I have found are processed / "conserved" coins that all natural toning has been obliterated.
As has been the case with many other dates, if I can't locate an AU 58, I'll substitute a MS 63-65. This really doesn't bother me, having a duplicate date in MS, as it has always been my goal to have a MS Date Set - plus - an AU complete set.
I seriously doubt I'll ever assemble a complete set of Halves in Mint State - although I have a good head start on one.
Happy Hunting, everyone !!
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Stack's just sold a Genuine 1901-S quarter at today's Baltimore auction for $11,000. It has VF details, normal color but some damage on the backside - like something fell on it. Does that seem like a bargain to anyone or is a mistake to buy the 1901-S in a Genuine holder?
In the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king.
I think if you like the detail on the coin and you're assembling a set in approximately the same grade why not get the Key Date at a fraction of the price of an unmolested one ?
I thought the 01-S you mentioned was a decent looking coin. It just wouldn't fit into my set. The 1901-S in PCGS MS 68 wouldn't fit into my set either - but I'd appreciate it alot more !
I just checked on my bids - and it looks like I'm the high bidder on this beautiful Quarter:
1913-P PCGS 65
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
This 1898-O Dime was tonight's win at B&M's Baltimore auction.
PCGS 64:
I'm still searching for an 1898-S Quarter in a mid range MS ... no luck locating one either. My 53 is a nice coin but I still want to upgrade it; I've still got to find the 1898-S Morgan to complete the entire [ Non Gold ] set.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
I was at the Albany, NY coin show yesterday, and a collector approached me with a NGC, MS-63, 1910-D Barber quarter. At first glance, there was nothing special about the coin at all......looked lightly cleaned, with a very weak strike. What was unusual with the coin had to do with the reverse of the coin. Above the eagle's head, in addition to the 13 stars was the indentation (impression), of a 14th star. The 14th star was incuse, not raised. Has anybody seen this before, or have any thoughts on how this might have happened. It didn't look like it was man-made after the minting process. Sorry, no images!
Speaking of Quarters - I located this unusually toned 1911-P Quarter on DLRC's web site - and pulled the trigger.
Seems as though all of my 1911 [P - D - & S] Quarters have all come from DLRC. They consistantly have a nice assortment of mid range MS Barbers - and if I were into collecting Proof Barbers - I'd have a field day at times.
Here's their images - but - I plan on having this as well as all my Quarters professionally imaged.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Hi Mike - I'll bite - I excerpted this from a PM discussion with JMW (Joe) a while back, who sought my opinion on buying a proof '85 nickel instead of a biz strike for his set. Since he's busy doing taxes, I don't think he'll mind if I air our laundry a bit:
Hi Joe - I would never be ashamed of having a nicer coin at half the price in my collection.....the only people who would care are the real sticklers and purists....any rational person would consider it from the 'value' side and see the proof makes sense. Besides, you're guaranteed a good strike! Since most of what you have in there are nice coins, I think it will fit it fairly nicely with them....it's not like it's sitting next to dark VG's or something.
Of course, you solved the dilemma by buying BOTH coins - which are quite nice, BTW.
After looking for around two years, I finally found a 1909-S dime that I could live with... I've gotten outbid by others and/or high reserves on the past few MS66 examples, I passed on the MS64 in the last Heritage auction because of some distracting slide marks across the face and I even bought and then immediately returned an AU58 recently that didn't live up to the photos.
Thanks in part to dbemike for the lead on this one, I really like the look of this dime in hand, has beautiful color and luster in hand that my photos don't really do justice. It does have plenty of marks and minor distractions that would definitely keep this one from upgrade consideration, but in hand those are the last things I notice given the color and luster.
And with this coin, I'm 100% complete in the 1909 Mint Set (without gold)!! Only the second person to complete the set to date, with dbemike being the first
Hi guys, been lurking for months on this thread, best one on the boards by far. I know my pics are lacking, having trouble with correct lighting. Some of these no doubt came from people posting here, so I thought I would post a few.
Need 16 to finish the set, then have to upgrade some of them. Grades range from F-12 to MS-63. Want to keep them around VF30-AU55. Tougher than I thought is was going to be
Michael very nice 1909-S dime. Ken welcome to the thread as well very nice group of halves. Thanks for sharing the photos.
Here is one I picked up recently with attribution back to the T. Price Collection. Beautiful coin with eye appeal that hints at a stronger grade.
The T. Price collection was one of the better known collections of a past generation. I believe it sold at auction close to 20 years ago, Dr. Pete probably has the specific date. i have some of the old auction catalogues and may have the one where this coin may have sold. I will go digging this weekend and see if I can find it.
