Lewy - I've seen that coin recently - on line - somewhere - I just can't remember where now. I wanted to view it in hand as its rare to find a circulated Proof Barber Half.
Mike: Eliasberg had nothing on you. The Lib's are quite nice. Have pity on we small collectors!
I would like to ask everyone their experience(s) with crossovers. Over several years I have "tested" the major services (all who shall remain nameless) and about half of the coins crossed. Last year I continued the experiment when John Albanese kindly opened up CAC to collectors. I forwarded the "non-crosses" and every one CAC'd. I believe that those of us with collecting experience need to continue on course and not worry about a grading company's economics. Lastly, I will note that "conservation" is a "load" and I will share that experience another time. I would like to share my 1893-O pcgs58 CAC below. Thanks for putting up with my rambling.
First off, that proof is astounding!! The tail feathers actually look like plumage.
Mike you continue to amaze with your upgrades,I seriously think when it is all said and done with your collection you should get a provenance attached to them. Your 1891 proof Nickel is really nice,I like the eye-appeal.
Labelman, your '93-O is exceptional, that is the grade range your completing......impressive,and good luck
Redglobe: I love albums...started my Barber & Seated collections years ago that way. Your 1898-S is a winner. Nice (read - not messed with) VF to AU Seated and Barber material, in my opinion, is tougher than BU. Are you close to completing the Barber Quarters ? Best wishes.
<< <i>Last month while at FUN, I picked up an 1894 Proof Dime [ PCGS PR 64 CAM ] and an 1894 Proof Quarter [ PCGS PR 64 ]...tonight, I was fortunate enough to add this to the new set...
PS: The Dime and the Quarter are being sent to BluCCphotos [ Todd ] for imaging. When I get the Half Dollar, I'll send it along to Todd as well to image. I'll post the new images once they [ 3 coins ] are imaged. >>
Mike: Can I get in on your pipeline to Charles Barber
Rob: ...two more better dates, your album is definitely full! I am still attempting to figure out how to use some equipment I have to image my 1902-s Quarter. Its a nice semi proof like NCG 58 CAC. I've attached my 02-O below. (Is there an1909-O in your album? I have had a chance to read through the 1909-O vs. 1901-S rarity blog. The opinions on scarcity and availability were interesting to say the least.) I hope to someday get through this blog. (May take some time!)
I found this Nickel when I moved down from Boston to Naples, Florida back in 1994. There is this very small coin B&M right on US 41; the owner is Ben King and if you are ever in the area please stop by his shop...American Rare Coins and Collectables.
On my first visit to his shop I spotted this 1886 Nickel in a PCI Green AU 53 holder. It was one of the last dates I needed to complete my set; a couple of years ago, I sent the coin into PCGS to cross at any grade and here it is...
Granted, its not the best struck Liberty Head Nickel I have ever seen - but the scarcity makes up for the strike.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Not really a 1909-O in my album, but I have 3 that are VG-8-10s with a full shield on the reverse....pretty decent strike for an O minter!
As far as rarity between the 2 grades you mentioned, that is a tough question. For obvious reasons by numbers the '01-S is rarer. If you put availability into the picture, recently through my searches I haven't found any '09-Os at all. I don't have any pop reports to look at so I couldn't guesstimate on those,as we all know they can be skewed by resubs.
I can remember around 10-11 years ago I went into one of my local coin shops and looked through her barber quarters, she had a 1909-O in one of her books and it "spoke" to me right away so I pulled it out of the album and on the 2x2 she had a price of $36 and it was a perfect gun metal gray with a bit of album toned blended in around part of the rim.I easily graded it a VF25 the liberty was all there and 70% of the ribbon was all there also. The reverse was just as nice, lots of neck feather detail and the wings were at least 70%.....needless to say I no longer own the coin,I sold (trade) it and some others for a 1915 half that is close to XF-40
I didn't realize at the time how difficult the '09-O is in any grade in F-12 and above.
Your '02-O looks familiar, isn't that a JJTP coin?
I'll ask you,how many coins do you need for your completion of your set? Keep bringing the photo's because I really enjoy as well as others the rarity of some of the coins you are showing.
Mike that goes for you to
For me, to see other photos of some of the barber coins I need is a real treat, the eye-appeal,and scarcity is a pleasure to view.
BTW, Mike as usual you continue to show some TROPHY coins in my book.1Applause;
I keep posting because I'm trying to get some of the collectors who hardly ever post here to show us their coins.
I finally got Redshoulder, the # 6 set, to post some of his beautiful coins onto his Registry set. I've been after him for years to do this - and he stopped half way through. I'm needling him though to finish.
The # 5 Set is owned by another collector, Chugum, who has a massive collection of all types of coins, and his/her Barber coins are all a minimum MS 63 [ in some sets, MS 64 ]. Only problem is, not one image in the bunch.
The # 3 Set - belonging to George Szatkowski has no images either - and he has some really nice coins.
The # 2 Set - belonging to Peter Shireman has images, some of which were taken by Superior Galleries - when the top three sets at the time [ Duckor, Friend and Shireman ] were displayed at a Long Beach convention.
Under the All Time Finest category, the Dale Friend collection has some fantastic coins imaged.
The # 1 Set - Finest of All Time - is the Steve Duckor collection. He opens his set up for inspection periodically - and he has quite a few coins imaged by PCGS - on TruView.
I'm thrilled to see others showing off their coins - and I hope more collectors follow suit. So, welcome, Rob, and please keep posting.

Keep looking. You will fill that album. I currently need 4 to complete my Barber Quarter set (note: I have 8 or 9 NGC's, several CAC'd, and 2 old anacs that I like very much) and 1 to complete my Classic Head $5 gold set. I note that in the Barber Quarter series I am looking for several upgrades and, more importantly, am getting better with my imaging equipment. However, I do like Mike's idea of having a pro image the material (but it takes some time to do this). Let me leave you with two images I think you will enjoy.
In my last response I stated that mike has some "Trophy" coins, well sir you also have one. What a treat to see a coin you have with so little wear, yet it was used over 100 years ago.Someone had the right idea to take your coin out of circulation.
I would speculate that your little prize was kept in a manila type of envelope?
