Just saw your post late this evening. Add my sincere congratulations to you on obtaining this fine coin. I have lots of stories about how I picked that one up initially from Larry Briggs raw, how we met to do the deal in Ann Arbor Michigan even though we had never met each other in person, how I traded a lot of coins, put the coin on lay-a-way, how I got it into its current PCGS slab, now with a well deserved CAC sticker.
Wow! I am very happy for you. Even I have thought about trying to pick it back up from Harry, but my MS 65 is a better match for my set and it would be a most expensive duplicate to have.
One thing I have found over the years of building my set: the coins I have reached for financially and have worried about my sanity, have been the coins most dear to me and the coins I have NOT regretted obtaining.
Oh yeah. One more thing. With your permission, Mike, I'd like to keep using the reverse of the coin as my avitar as I have done for many years. The same is used by TahoeDale. I could possibly switch to my newer example, but the MS 63 coin remains one of my favorites of all time. Enjoy.
And thanks above to all who appreciated my lengthy post about Dale Friend's half set at FUN. I hadn't seen any other decent posts about it and thought our megapost deserved to recognize it. Sorry I don't post images much, but I often don't have much time and when they last changed around how you post images, it sort of left me behind.

What grade of 05-O half are you looking for? I know I have multiple examples in low to mid-grade, probably tops would be F to VF, but I'd have to check to see. My F-VF set is only missing about 8 coins right now, most are original or at least decent.

While at the FUN Show, I picked up a couple of copies of a specialized edition of Dale Friend's Collection.
I had Dale autograph one for myself [ Thank You, Dale, for the kind words ] and another with just his signiture.
I will be happy to give the second copy away to anyone - who has already posted to this Thread - if they can name the next coin I will add to any of my Barber Collections:
[ ie: Liberty Head Nickels; Dimes; Quarters and Half Dollars ]
Even I can't guess which coin will be upgraded - obviously, none of my AU 58's or MS coins will be on the list - but there are alot of AU 53's & 55's that are on my want list in 58 or finer, and there are alot of missing registered coins in the Nickel and Dime Collections.
So...look over my Registry sets...see what fits the criteria for my upgrade-list and make a guess - multiple guesses are okay. Obviously, the first correct guess is automatically the winner...

Well I have been pretty quiet lately on this thread but thought maybe I would post some photos of the main reason why.
I have been working on this acquisition for a bit now and just got it today. I am so pleased with the coin overall. Original and beautifully toned surfaces which my poor photos are junk in capturing. There are a couple of minor marks on the obverse with some mint made roller marks that are often found on S mint Barber Halves during this time frame that define the grade. As usual the reverse is better.
How about we play guess the grade on another thread a bit as well before I reveal it. If the pics help out enough.
I also wanted to thank Dr. Pete and Mike Hayes for their reports about FUN and the sale of Dale's magnificent set of Barber Halves. It was such a great event and so wonderful to spend time with Mike previewing, and then all of us watching the sale take place and the amazing action. I was so pleased for Dale as well as each of us who added a coin or two from his fantastic set. It was great to spend time afterwards with Mike and Dr. Pete, sharing the whole thing.
Mike that is just an awesome addition. After that coin I have no idea what to guess but I have one Dale signed too.

PonyExpress8 - I already know the grade of that fantastic 04-S - so, I won't guess; "... Mama-Mia That's Some Spicey-Meat-a-Ball-a !!! ..." Congrats !!!
I received my new 01-S Half today as well. I'm more than pleased. Bet you are too !!

That's somethin', PonyExpress. I'm growing tired of seeing people now asking a grand for Fines in that coin, that it's nice to see a grade that's actually Nuts. Congrats!
We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.
Far less lofty Barber Quarters than the 1896-s in PCGS 53 were offered in the DL auction Thursday night and I have won the two I had specifically targeted for my Dansco set.
And there's this from the DL PR about the sale and all those DGS "cleaned coins", including the two above.
<John Feigenbaum, David Lawrence Rare Coins and DGS President stated, "This result speaks volumes for the coin market as a whole, DGS coins and DLRC Auctions. The consignor of the Smoky Mountain Collection already called this morning and was thrilled with the results, as well. He and I discussed the merits of grading collector coins with honest descriptions (i.e. lightly cleaned, light scratch, and so on). For years, collectors have been told these coins have no value because they won't "grade" at the major services. This is simply not the case. Collectors love and need affordable coins and DGS is here to provide people with assurance in buying them.">

I am new to the forum and collect Barber Halves, mainly. This is my first post w/ pictures so apologies if they are lackluster. Additionaly, I am having difficulty scanning my coins (how do you get the scanner to focus on the coin and not the holder?) I don't purcase slabbed coins, but raw and place them in air-tite holders.......
Incidentally, a nice 96-o Half in PCGS 40 just closed on the bay for 1100. That one was wildly attractive coin I gotta say.
Tombr, That was one very attractive coin...but apparently my bid wasn't high enough! Seems this coin and others, such as the 93-S PCGS VF-35 that closed on 28 Dec for $1764, are now demanding a much stronger premium. Is this a fluke? Is it a very determined Barber collector or has the demand increased so much that it's driving prices up? Seems the more common coins are selling about right...and in some cases well below retail.
<< <i><Yup - I'd like that one too - with an S on the reverse !!!>

Dogwood,
I can always dream. I doubt seriously that in my lifetime I'll even hold an 1894-S dime !
My newest addition arrived today - and I won't post it - or add it to my Registry set until a few more guesses come in. All I'll say is that its in a PCGS AU 58 holder.

The 93-S you speak of is a pretty coin. I suspect we had a situation where two bidders placed VERY high bids without the expectation that the other was doing likewise. It got a little out of hand. These things will happen from time to time with auctions, so yes, I think this incident was a fluke. The coin is real solid and in time I think the new owner will not regret it. JMHO

I TOLD YOU!!!!!
Incidentally, a nice 96-o Half in PCGS 40 just closed on the bay for 1100. That one was wildly attractive coin I gotta say.

Tombr,
That was one very attractive coin...but apparently my bid wasn't high enough!

Dogwood,
I can always dream. I doubt seriously that in my lifetime
I'll even hold an 1894-S dime !
My newest addition arrived today - and I won't post it - or add it to my Registry set
until a few more guesses come in.

JMHO

Here's some new pics of as I just noticed 1 of 2 Plate Coins in David Lawrences Barber Quarter 2ND Edition Book Error Section.
It's the only non Philly, Branch Mint Error Known formally belonging to Larry Briggs.
A San Francisco minted 1907 now PCGS AU58 5% Off Center, formally in a SEGS MS63 15% Off Center holder.
Enjoy!
(Sorry about the holder haze on the obverse)

My apologies to Dogwood and Tombr...guess I had a "mental fa*t" there. Nonetheless that is a really nice coin and will bet it's even nicer once it's in hand.
