My latest acquisition, a 1913-S Qtr graded by NGC

  • MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭

KK - Glad you were able to post your 1913-S Quarter.
I never had a chance to get the images resized since
I had an issue with the double-image being in "my pictures"
it went into a file instead and was disappointed I couldn't
    post it for you before.

The 13-S you bought looks very lusterous and well struck.
I already know the grade, so, I'll remain silent on that score.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Who amoungst us is planning on going to the FUN convention
this January ? I for one will be. The primary reason will be to
view Dale Friend's halves - and I hope to secure one of them
    during the auction.

I'll only be at the convention a day or two and would love to
meet as many fellow Barberites as possible.

    No NEWPS to report.

    Great looking 04-S !!!

Also, the 01-S quarter is nothing to
    sneeze at either !

Nice collection you're building - very nice indeed.

    -------------------------------------------------------------

Sooner or later this will get out as the auction is in three weeks.
Heritage has a very large collection of quarters coming up in December.

I have my sights set of four AU 58's to upgrade a couple of 53's and 55's in my collection.

A major - and I mean major offering is the only 1909-O in PCGS 58 !!!!!

Although I would have loved to have owned this coin in my preferred grade of AU 58
...I'm afraid I just can't justify paying a substantial premium that this coin will sell for.
I'm truly satisfied with the MS 64 that I bought a couple of years ago from Coinlieutenant
This AU 58 is a major offering - and although another NGC AU 58 was offered last year -
which sold for close to $3K - the PCGS coin is far superior, IMHO.

Feel free to PM me to discuss the coins I'm after and which ones you're interested in.
    Two more AU 58's that I'm tracking are the 1902-O [ I finally located a 58 last year ]
    and a 1911-S [ and I have Dale Friend's MS 64 which I won't part with.]

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

KK - I'm still shaking my head over that 04-S you picked up. No, I'm not, I actually am
kicking myself in the Butt for not seeing it first !!

Mike thanks for the nice comments and heads up alert on the upcoming auction on AU58 Barber qtrs. Good luck on your
bids and I hope you'll win em all.

As for me, I'm awaiting for the next 96-S qtr in AU or better to
come up either in an auction or a direct sale. If anyone knows
of one that is available either post it here or PM me.

"KK - I'm still shaking my head over that 04-S you picked up. No, I'm not, I actually am
kicking myself in the Butt for not seeing it first !!"

Mike - think of it this way; by not buying the 58 04-S will free up
the cash flow so that you'll be in a position to bid strongly on
the upcoming AU58 Qtr auction ie a win, win, win situation.

It appears that this coin is overgraded. What say you? What is it graded at, and what grade do you think it should be (no cheating)?

Not sure what it will really go for, but that AU58 1909-O is nice!!! I agree that it will go for strong money. Price guides aren't even in the ballpark on this one. Too bad I just bought one of these or I'd be all over this one imageimage
  • MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭

    KK,

The coin looks like an AU 50 - and I don't think its overgraded if you bought it as a 50.
The stars at the right are all flat - there are alot nicer examples of the 1916 available.

See my PM regarding the group of duplicate quarters I just sold. My 1916 is a far superior strike - and
it should be on their web site in a few days. Then again - you could call and reserve the coin.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Illini420 - You're right - if I didn't also have a MS 1909-O quarter - I too would be all over that AU 58.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nothing new to report. Sorry to say.

    Happy hunting everyone.

Wow, I can't believe MFH is passing on THE PCGS 1909-o AU58 quarter. I can remember back in the day, THAT COIN was in your Sigline wantlist, for a long time...

Our collection goals do change over time, don't they?
Do your best to avoid circular arguments, as it will help you reason better, because better reasoning is often a result of avoiding circular arguments.

Here are my latest additions to the harem. The first one--------01-S in VF35 came from JJT. I have to thank MFH for passing on it and letting me have second dibs on it.

The following seven are all raw purchases over the past few months and I used my eight free submissions on them. If you're wondering what the eighth one was, it was a 11-S Lincoln Cent which came back XF45. I'd show it, but I'm not allowed to post it here image

KK - Very nice coin - sooner or later I know you'll surprise us all and open up your sets
on the PCGS Registry. I for one am looking forward to seeing your collection. Get the
couple of NGC's to cross over - ie: 1913-S Quarter - and I think you'll have an upper
    ranked collection.

The Complete Set section of the Registry has a Barber section - which I'm still chipping away at.
Still can't figure why I completed that raw set of Dimes...all the registered dimes are my duplicates ... image

BTW: I started a Thread for Don Soles...about posting early commems or Barber halves...

Even bigger WOW, just sold for $4025!!! That's about the MS64 price!! Somebody really wanted this one...
  • MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭

I'm glad for the seller, Gary B., at the prices realized on his AU 58 quarters.

I knew the 09-O would bring MS 63 money - but I too am a bit surprised at
the MS 64 price it realized.

I only bid on one coin - an 1898-S quarter - in PCGS 58 [ I'd like to upgrade my AU 53 ]
and that coin realized $1495 !! My initial max bid of $875 was out bid by the time the
Internet Bidding had closed - so, I watched the auction live and was able to rebid on
the 98-S. I upped my bid to - almost ashamed to admit this - $1200 and I was immediately
out bid again. It sold for $1300 plus the 15% = $1495.

Anyone pick up anything from this Heritage sale ?

Inquiring minds want to know who picked up the 1896-O Half in MS 64. It was a beauty !

Wow and wow on a couple of those ... no, nothing for me.

The 09-O, but maybe even moreso the 98-S surprised me at those prices.

I saw the 09-O at maybe 2500., and the 98-S at no more than 850. to 900.

Also the 12-S at 690. seemed pretty steep.

Shows you what I know image

The 96-O languished a bit, but the picture didn't make it seem premium, so maybe that was all.

Otherwise the 14 coins I tracked seemed to do well and about what I would expect based on the pictures.

Granted I did not see any of the coins in hand.

Interesting to see if these higher prices willl stick, if another coin or coins of the same caliber surface in the next year.

Anytime a choice 1909-O gets graded - which is few and far between - its an occasion of some note.
    Here's Dogwood's 1909-O in PCGS 55. [ Now a POP - TWO coin in AU 55 ]. The AU 58 is still a POP - ONE.
Dogwood will be providing better images at a later date.
