Last post of the night...here's a nice 01-S Half in PCGS VF 35 I just had sent to me.
Gave serious thought to keeping this beauty - but a friend needed this 01-S
as an upgrade for his collection - so I sold it to him for what JJ Teaparty sold it to me for.

I'm not going to crack this coin out for the Whitman, as I just cracked out this PCGS VG 10 :

Just got back from the local coin store and picked up a couple of Barber halves. The 1912-D is probably the most common date in the set, but this one had almost perfect original toning the way I like em', so I bought it. Then to my surprise I saw a creamy looking 1893-S Unc. just sitting there. The coin is a slider with slide marks and was priced as an AU. The luster is so creamy and rich I couldn't believe it it was only priced like an AU, but looking at it with the loupe I could see why. With out the slide marks, I would give the coin an MS62 grade. With slide marks, probably MS60 or 61. The reverse is so nice, with only one small scratch/mark in the fields at 8:00.

I wonder if PCGS will holder it? What a crying shame that the coin was mishandled.

Once again Tyler finds the little old coin shoppe in the middle of Nowhere, Utah
and snags something "commonplace" that would take the rest of us years to
    locate.

Tyler, I think the facial marks shouldn't hold back the 93-S from getting holdered as a 61 or 62.

Knowing what I paid for my [ EX: Brandon ] AU 58 - and his current AU 55 - I'd be more
than curious as to what you considered to be "priced as an AU ".

Nice pick up - really nice !!

The 12-D is also nice - but its hard to compliment the 12-D when you're salivating over a 93-S !!

Mike, anybody know who bought that XF45 1897-O on JJ Teaparty's site? You know, it ticks me off that they don't put up pics for a week and all the good stuff sells, before a picture is posted. When I am first on the scene and there are no pics, I literally feel like sending some anthrax in a letter to JJ Teaparty as my vengencence to them.

That Anthrax was a joke if any goverment wonk is spying on these boards. image

Wow, lots of nice ones posted lately. How about a pic of what Barbers are supposed to look like image

    image

Almost $150 face in Barbers... bought in several transactions on eBay using 30% cashback for an average net price after rebate of 9.1x face. Haven't gone through them all yet, but already found 4 1904-S halves, so that's cool.

Thanks for the kind words about the 1910 dime. I know many of the board members also collect quarters, so I am posting a picture of one that I recently traded back to Joe O'Connor. It is a 1906-o, PCGS 66 with nice toning, a full right claw and great luster. I think he still has if if anyone is interested.

    illini420,

Very attractive 09-O quarter - I looked at it a few times on the BST - but
I already bought one a tad more toned from John Marburger a couple of
years ago. I attached the image some time ago - its buried a few pages back.

The one any only 1909-O in PCGS 58 is in strong hands and I doubt I'll ever
get a crack at it...still, I can dream.

    The 09-O you bought has an interesting wood chip depression on the cheek;
as alot of O mint coins have - some more so than others. Dr.Pete mentioned
that occurance on O mint coins awhile ago...its an interesting "FUN BARBER FACT".

I was offered a stunning 1907-P Quarter in PCGS 66 the other day - and its a fantastic
coin...however, my AU 58 fits my set alot better. The image is too large to attach but
I'll edit this post once I have the image reduced to under 50Kb.

    Happy hunting everyone !!

This is another dime that I never posted. I have always loved this dime but for reason I never own it for very long. I have traded it twice! Maybe some day I will own it again.
It is a 1911 PCGS 67, Ex Duckor

  • MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭

    Darrell,

I know that Dr. Duckor's dimes sold for a fortune - considerably more than others in the same grade -
and I never thought anyone would flip them so soon after the sale - without loosing some money.

That's a stunning dime - keep your images coming - they are very enjoyable !!

    Mike,
I have owned the 1911 twice and never lost money on it. The dime is fully original and has a great strike. Even though the 1911 is a common date, finding PCGS 67 dimes like the 1911 are very hard to find. I have not seen another one for sale in about two years. The population report shows 12 but that number is most likely inflated by resubmissions. If you look at past sales at Heritage you will see that most of them are dipped out white or just not attractive.

Nice 99-S Mike. I hear the 99-S in the quarter series is a very tough date to locate.

Here is my newest thanks to JJ Teaparty. The 96-S for me has been on par with the 93-S, and the 01-S for difficulty in the original mid-grade ranges. In fact, for the price, it is probably my favorite date of the series (it was the 04-O, but I can't ever find any). In nine years of collecting, this is only the second coin that I have come across and my very fist XF40.

    Tyler,

Excellent pick up from JJ Teaparty. The 96-S is a tough date in XF 40 - [ see PM ].

The 99-S quarter which was part of the Phillipine Trio is extremely hard to locate
in AU 58...and this is the first one I've located in a PCGS 58 holder since I started this
set back in 1996. I have another in a PCGS 55 holder in my "duplcate" set now.

Congratulations Mike on the 1899-S 25c AU-58, I was the under bidder on it. I bet it looks phenomenal! Sorry to drive it up on you, lol...but I was hoping for it too, very tough coin.

My 1st time sharing some Barbers of mine in this thread, enjoy:

    1902-S Barber Half - PCGS XF40
    image

1895 Barber Quarter - PCGS F-12 (a cheapy, but I think it looks absolutely perfect for the grade)
    image

    1914-S Barber Quarter - PCGS F-15
    image

    -Steve
  • Tyler, that 96-S...what a rare find...great looking coin with tremendous eye appeal...I like, I like!
Tombr, 08-S is hard to find in that grade...a real gem.
Patches, 02-S is also very hard to find in that grade...can't ever go wrong in an 02-S purchase...you chose well...congrats on the newp.

Also, what's up with the Registry? Just took a look at Barber halve Basic Sets and the standings appear to be askew...or is it just a glitch in the system? Noted that long standing registry sets dropped significantly in the standings...did they change the criteria or something?
    Regards to all,
    Dave

    Dave,

There's an additional set that was just published - Chicago Ark - and he bumped the 7th set down and all the ones registered below it. Its not a "New Collection" just a collection that wasn't published before. I have no idea who the owner is - but - I am amazed that he bumped Glenn Holsonbake's supurb set down - considering that Glenn's set is far superior and considerably more complete. Glenn has been very busy at shows recently and hasn't had any free time to add his newps to his collection - but he'll overtake my ranking [ # 5 ] once he's added his new purchases.

Red Shoulders collection is almost complete and he currenly is ranked # 6 - and I've been helping him locate the things he needs - although he's not active on the Boards - he's a true "dyed in the wool Barber Half collector ".

The recent passing of my father has me escaping into these Forums - just to keep my mind occupied. To all my fellow Barber collecors - and who I consider good friends - thank you again for all the PM's of condolences and well wishes. My Dad loved my Barbers - and he saved a few himself as a young man.
Back in the depression era, alot of people spent their colliction to make ends meet - and he was amazed at finding MS Barbers in change in the mid 1930's. He only kept a few things - and spent the lesser quality things - because back in the mid 30's - even a quarter was alot of money.

    ...............................................................

Steve/Patches: Wish I knew you better so
I would not of had to pay so much for the
    1899-S AU 58 quarter...but I still paid $100
less than I was prepared to go.

    ................................................................

BTW - Sunday's Heritage auction has quite a
few AU 58 Dimes and Quarters available.
I have my sights set on 2 dimes and 1 quarter.
No halves caught my eye - so have at those all
you wish. Again - no AU 58 Trade Dollars seem
to be surfacing either - that set is really languishing.

    ------------------------------------------------------

    Happy Hunting everyone.

I'm wondering if there arn't other sets laying low - off in the side lines - and unpublished - to
knock me down to # 7 ... but the other sets which have the same duplicate ranks and are
vastly different collections - does seem very odd.

There has to be some sort of glitch in the PCGS system.

Last Monday on October 27th, it was my Dad's 91 st Birthday
and I had taken him out of the Nursing Home for the day. After
lunch at home, he asked me what was new with the collection.

I showed him a few things for the raw half dollar book that had
arrived while he was in the hospital during the past month - which
he enjoyed looking at. Then he said - what no new quarters or dimes ?

So, I logged onto Heritage's site and looked over their newly listed
    offerings for Sunday, November 2nd.

After browsing any possible upgrades, I showed him one that I had
trouble locating in AU 58, a 1906-D quarter. All he said was buy it.

My Dad passed away two days later. When I got home last night from the
Wake with family - I checked My Heritage around Midnight.

I won the 06-D quarter - my bid stood up - and as it turns out -
the 06-D was one of the coins my father had found in change back in the
mid 1930's in change and that coin is still raw in his SDB.

    Here's the new addition:
