Newbarberguy if you have some suspicions about the coin it has been my experience first impressions are correct. The choice then becomes either keep the coin whether it comes back graded or in a genuine holder. Or return it now based upon what you see and your impression of the coin.
It's never an easy decision and different for each individual. There are a lot of coins out there that have been cleaned and retoned, some that will wind up in a holder and most that won't. But each individual has to decide what they can live with and what they are willing to do. Good luck.
Mike sorry to hear about the 1894-S result. What once may have holdered sans hairlines has seemed to change over the past couple of years. I have a 1913-S half that was in an NGC MS64 I tried to cross in the holder, and not cross. I was so sure it was a potential upgrade I cracked it out and 2 more attempts have resulted in the most recent try in a Genuine Holder with the caveat questionable color. The coin has luster, no breaks in the luster that I can see, and the slightest gold toning. I have seen many dozens of coins that have the same look. Showed it to at least 3 other dealers whose opinions I think are exceptional and all say keep trying. None of them can understand why it isn't graded.
Frustrating to say the least.
Tychojoe nice circulated coins there. You are getting started with a great group there. Illini I liked Dale's 09-O a lot when I viewed it in hand. Very sweet coin with a great look and strike.
Ah, yeah. I got the guy's 05-o on best offer. It's an AU detail coin, cartwheel luster, with a few light wiping hairlines. I like it, but it's not going to slab straight. Your 07-p from the photo, like a lot of that set that came out together, looks like good Dansco material. That's where mine is. If you're listing a 73 coin set individually, the wording can slip into auto-pilot. "Original, ehh.....sure."
We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.
Does anyone remember their first Barber? Mine was purchased in a small coin store in Fayetteville, NC. in 1983 It was an 1892 XF-45. I paid $38 for it and still have it. It was the first of many more to come.
<< <i>Does anyone remember their first Barber? Mine was purchased in a small coin store in Fayetteville, NC. in 1983 It was an 1892 XF-45. I paid $38 for it and still have it. It was the first of many more to come. >>
I certainly remember it - like it was yesterday. I used to get rolls of coins at the local small Savings Bank in my hometown back in the mid 1960's. In one of the Dime rolls, I pulled out a 1908-P in AU 58. I almost fell over. It never happened again.
When I started to collect the Dime series in earnest, I bought a group from Dave Lawrence within a few months - but I believe the 1902-O was the first one I paid more than face value for.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Actually the first 2 barbers I bought were gifts I was probably 12 at the time so 1966. I bought a 1910-S and a 1914-S both about VF+ as presents for my grandparents, their birth years and because we are in California had to be S's. LOL
They kept them all these years although they are both gone now. I have many fond memories of being allowed to look through my grandmothers cash drawer at the day old bakery for coins I needed, and my grandfather adding a coin here and there he would find in change. My grandmother passes away Jan 2, 2000 at the age of 85 and my grandfather passes away December 29, 2007 3 month shy of 98.
As for a barber for myself this 1895-S was my first serious coin. Bought raw and graded as a walk through at the SF ANA 5 years ago, came back MS65 and that got the bug going for me. I remember studying the pop reports and really getting into the series then for lots of good reasons. A doable set but some scarce dates too. I remember seeing the 65 pop go from 6 with 3 higher I think it was to 7 when my coin was added. Pretty exciting stuff for me. I see there are 2 more now nearly 5 years later. Not a lot of coins.
Who else has a first Barber story I would love to hear more from you guys.
<< <i>Neat off center coin Broadstruck. Did you see the 1900 dime in the upcoming B&M sale in Portland. Looks a bit similar.
>>
Thanks for the heads up PonyExpress8, but I'm more into Barber Quarter and Half errors as dimes are quite common. I traded all my Barber Dime errors but one kept for type into another error at coinfest.
To Err Is Human.... To Collect Err's Is Just Too Much Darn Tootin Fun!
<< <i>Broadstruck...you continue to amaze me locating those error Barbers. I love that one ! >>
Thanks MFH, this isn't a newp I've owned this one for years.
It's the only branch mint 25c error I know of, it's also the plate coin in David Lawrence's 2nd Edition Barber Quarter book error section... ex-Larry Briggs.
To Err Is Human.... To Collect Err's Is Just Too Much Darn Tootin Fun!
I used to have a off center barber dime about 30% off. I sold it a while back. I used to have a complete dime type off set. The only one I didn't have was the flowing hair. Never have seen one of those. Probably couldn't happen because of the striking method.
I also have a partial set of Mercs where the date is machine doubled. They are not rare or worth anything, but I thought it would be neat to have the whole set that way. My earlyest is the 17-S I think. Sorry, I know this isn't a barber story.
Earlier I asked if any other board members collect proof Barbers and only Mike responed. If you have some nice proofs please share them with us. Thanks, Darrell
I was going thru a list that Tonelover had sent me a few weeks back - and I thought I already had this date in 58 or 65 - [ my spreadsheet was incorrect ] - if I had realized my error sooner, I would have been all over that coin myself [ I think I had made mention of that earlier when I first saw your image ].
Oh well.................
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Many thanks to Mike Hayes. My set is now complete in the sense that every "hole" is filled. Now comes the stage of upgrading and tweaking the set. There are a few I would like to replace as time goes on. Mike was kind enough to part with this 05-O. It's a very nice F15.
Here's a new pickup, saw it at a show this weekend and seemed like a nice one for an MS63. Darker and a little dull toning on the obverse, but the reverse is awesome!!
Darrell------I put the first coin in my registry set in June of 2006. Several of the pieces in my set I aquired during the great siver price increase in 1979-1980. I was a teenager and I worked in a gas station for a man who put up a sign offering to buy silver coins. The locals came in with bags of them. I used to stay after work and help him sort them. He was not a coin collector and this was strictly a bullion operation. He let me cherrypick anything I wanted for melt. Then, I discovered girls and coin collecting took a 30 year pause.
I guess you could say it took 30 years with a break
Illini, very nice quarter...excellent strike and tone!
Tombr, great story...so what types of coins were you able to stash away back in 79-80?
Mike, great addition to your collection!
Question: Anyone have coins Tru-Viewed at PCGS lately? Price went up from $5.00 per coin (year ago) to $20.00 per coin today...that's a significant price jump in a year...seems like it should stay around $5.00 as a courtesy...am I wrong here or is this the going price? For $20 per coin I'm going to invest in a better camera and take my own!
<< <i>Yesterday, I received the Stack's, Bowers & Merena and Heritage Catalogs.
Some great looking coins - there's an 1892-O Micro O in NGC 62 going to
be sold at Stack's. Richly toned and a nice strike.

I picked up a nice lot of various Barber dimes, quarters and halves at the Cental FL show on Fri; but with the photographer back to teaching, haven't had time to get pics.
Anyway, question for the audience - regarding the 99-O Half in XF - is this considered a better or undervalued date? I did not have it on my short list of sleepers and better dates to watch for, but decided to pick it up anyway, since it was problem free and all there, maybe even XF45, and was priced well back of XF Bid. Thanks for any insight.
I have only owned one 1899-O Half in XF 45 - an NGC coin - that I ended up selling last year on eBay [ as I recall ] and I have never seen another in XF .
The 99-O is on my short list to upgrade in my better set - I have a nice 55 but am looking for an AU 58.
My current second set has a nice PCGS VF 30 which I won from a UMAKEM auction.
I think any nice XF "o" mint half is worth owning. Congrats on the newps.
Glad you liked the 98-P I just got. I have a MS 64 that I need to find a new home for. But, before selling it, I'll submit it to PCGS for a possible upgrade. This 64 came out of Gary Hultman's collection:

The PCGS population for 99-O in XF45 is 5 and XF40 is 3. I agree with Mike that ANY nice O-Mint XF or VF is worth owning. I found the 99-O hard to find. Here's mine, it's a VF30

I like the 1895 except for the rim nick (I like darkly toned coins). The 1908-O is particularly nice as well.

The 07-S I have in the Whitman would grade F 15, although the dealer
felt the coin was a VF 20. Years ago, it could have been called a F 18.
There was alot of competition for that coin and I paid dearly for it. Its
