Joe - what is the color of the coin - in your estimation -
    charcoal-grey - or - grey-brown ?

I'd be happy to take and post my own images - regardless
    of the outcome.

    PM sent.

Mike, et al, I really was expecting a 50 for the 09-o, they just don't like heavy toning I suppose, and the obverse seems duller than the reverse. (That's kinda normal, really). I put my opinion in the bank and sold the 55 before my grades were released, thinking, who needs two AU's?
Everybody gets a head scratcher now and again.
I'm still very pleased with my coin regardless.
    We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.

I didn't end up bidding on the 1909-S Quarter... not sure what the bidding got up to, but doesn't look like it met the reserve price.
  • MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭

    Mike,

You're right it didn't hit its reserve. It opened at $2,000
and I can't see if anyone actually bid on it or not.

It wouldn't fit into your set anyway - it was very heavily
toned in a deep blue. Your coins are very white from
    what I've seen.

OK it looks like Liberty nickels are OK to post on the thread. Since I wasn't finding anything new for the quarter and half collection, I thought it was time to expand my horizons. This is my first Liberty nickel, I bought it as a raw 60.

    Small coin, small imageimage
  • MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭

Having my collection at the bank - and occasionally at home for a short
amount of time to review it - has caused me to become somewhat lax
when it comes to adding coins into the appropriate Eagle Album pages.

Sometimes - when I'm pressed for time - I'll open up one of the SDB's
and place the newps into the box without leaving the vault. I just make
a mental note which box number I dropped which coin in...sometimes I
forget - then I have to take out all the boxes and reorganize.

In the past, I have cracked out a few coins for my Barber Dime Dansco
album - but as most of you know, I'm now working on a certified collection
as an adjunct to the raw set.

I'm beside myself at the moment as I seem to have misplaced a 1907-P Dime
in PCGS 58 [ serial # 03770813 ] - I spent an hour this morning at the bank
searching for it - I'm now ferreting out all my "known hiding places" at home.
I bought this coin on a Teletrade auction in September of 2008 - shortly after
my return from vacation and about the same time I admitted my Dad into the
    Hospital.

So - in case this coin turns up - you'll know its mine - image

Here's my long-awaited 1902-O dime. I have been trying to fill this hole in my AU55 to MS65 set for quite some time. It's only graded PCGS MS61, but the pretty toning gives it a lot of eye appeal for the assigned grade.

Did I already post this one? Maybe. Probably.

Anyway, it came back in a "Genuine" holder from PCGS. Old cleaning. Though I don't disagree with PCGS for no-grading it, I don't find the cleaning at all objectionable, personally, and didn't really notice it. I like the look of this piece and think most would agree it's a handsome circulated example. What are y'all's grade opinions on it? I range between VF25 and VF35, so I guess I'll split the difference and call my opinion VF30.

I'd give it a thirty. It almost looks like some pvc residue on the reverse, mayber that's why it got a bath. Still a nice coin
  • MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭

Ron - Thanks for the images - nice coin - PM sent.

    Lordmarcovan - nice Half - I'd say it was a 20 -
could squeek a 25 on a good day, but no 30, IMHO.

I was only watching a couple of Barbers in the auction and prices seemed to be maybe a little stronger than the CSNS Auction earlier this month, but not much stronger. Didn't end up bidding too strongly on anything as I didn't have a chance to go to lot viewing beforehand.

Saw this one on the bourse floor though, thought it was pretty and picked it up. PCGS MS65

Congratulations, Mike, on getting the Phila issue
for your 1909 Date Set, and although more toned
than the New Orleans issue you have, its stunning.

I heard from a very reliable source that Sunnywood's
Barber Quarter collection was sold "en masse" to
its current owner; I was surprised, but pleased, that
this collection was kept together and I'm sure it was
a great experience to have viewed it. Which dealer
had this set on display ?

Thanks image Yeah, it was Sunnywood's set but was sold together as a set. I agree that it's nice to keep it together, especially if it keeps getting displayed image Was very surprised to see it and thought it should have been advertised by the show (rather than the boring Morgan sets image that were supposedly the highlight attractions). It was at the table of Hanks & Associates and was told by them on Thursday the coins likely won't be for sale during the owner's lifetime. So I guess I'll just have to remain healthy and live a very long life in order to have a chance at that amazing 1909-O image That coin and just about every other coin in that set were just amazing looking... unfortunately, the set wasn't on display today (Saturday) so I didn't get a second chance to look closer.
  • MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭
Just to see that set in its entirety would have been worth the trip.

Just found this Dime on the Bay - looks like Dennis West's eBay name.

A nice addition to the collection:

    image
    image

Although the images are very small, I trust Dennis' judgement. I'm sure its a choice coin.

He has never disappointed me yet.

Edit: It turns out - its NOT Dennis West ...image

Here's a nice circ. 1903-S dime I have had in my collection since 1999. What's so special about it? I dug it out of the dirt with my metal detector in upstate NY, and it's very difficult to tell it's ever been in the ground! I am pretty sure PCGS would holder it somewhere in the VF25 range. It was protected from the elements by a combination of unusually dry, sandy soil, and a sacrificial Indian cent that was lying right on top of it. The penny was hosed by corrosion, but it was a worthy sacrifice to protect the underlying semi-key dime. Now to find that 1901-S quarter this weekend....

    Ron,

    What an amazing find !!
Looks like it'd holder as well, IMO.

Nothing new to report - but I just received
the new Stack's catalog - there are some
nice mid range AU's and MS halves - plus
    an attractive 04 - S in PCGS XF 40 .

There's got to be something for most
collectors of halves - check it out.

Anyone planning on going to FUN next month ?
I plan on being there for two days. PM me if
you are - and I'll look forward to meet you.

Mike - I'm thrilled for you on the 09-S Quarter - glad I was able to steer you towards it.

Greg - The three quarters have very vivid toning and the center one is a 55 and the
first and last ones are 58's - IMHO

Here's something that I needed to have resized - and this'll be going in to be crossed over:

Thanks to Dave99B for shrinking this image - BTW, Dave, all I had to do was change the File Name
from JPEG to JPG. Works like a charm.

oh come on!!! not a fan of the super-sized images??? image Glad I could help out with the '09 Lib Nickel, you'll like this one.

Just got this one back from PCGS after crossover and variety attribution. Pop 1/0 for the variety (though I know of at least one or two in higher graded unattributed PCGS holders). I must have some kool-aid on the brain or something but the coin looks so much better in a PCGS holder than it did in an NGC holder:

    image

Also, big time thanks to the folks in the set registry who very promptly added this coin into my 1909 registry sets for me since I couldn't do it myself as the coin numbers are different for the variety. very helpful folks image

Good evening all. Thought I would post a neat photo of my newest feature coin here and announce my new website. Hope any of you that like Barbers will take a look on a regular basis. I have a bit of my inventory up but a lot more to go yet. Then I need to get the uncertified up after that.

    image

After much contemplation I have also decided to consign the remainder of my Barber Half set to the Summer ANA in Los Angeles with Bowers and Merena. It was a decision that took some time to come around too. I have sold off a few pieces privately since January and this has dropped me down a couple of notches but there are some really great coins which will be available. The bottom line is I am a full time dealer now. I shouldn't be competing with my own potential customers. image

I hope to be able to post a few of my halves along the way to share with you leading up to Los Angeles. Of course if you have any interest or questions I would be very happy to answer them as well. Thanks.

Mike - Barberman55 sent me a PM mentioning that I get a Photobucket account up - so I can post
oversized images and not be restricted by PCGS 50Kb size limit. Dave99B has been resizing my
images for the last three years - and for all his help - I am truly grateful.

BTW - excellent inverted S on the 1909-S Half - very sweet coin.

Glenn - Beautiful 1907-S Dime - very nice indeed. Wish I had
known you had a great 1900-P Dime as well - I would have
grabbed it - [ before I committed to the one I just picked up.]

I for one will be looking at the B&M ANA Sale with great enthusiasm
and I wish you all the best on the sale of your halves. I have my eye
on at least one of them !

Just got up to Boston yesterday evening - and what a change from
the Naples, FL weather...its very chilly - and rainy. Off to Cape Cod
on Sunday to open up the cottage - but its a short stay now - I'll
be back in the Hot/ Humid weather next Wednesday. Next trip up

Dave, Dan, Don, Mike and Tombr thank you so much for the kind comments. I am getting familiar with the ins and outs of the website better each day. Those coins with photos so far have been done by Todd at BluCCphotos. He is fairly local to me as it turns out so I am using him on my better coins. The so so pictures you will start seeing over the weekend will be mine. LOL and sigh and whine!

After I get all the certified coins up then all the raw ones will be posted in a price list format. There will be lots of F-XF Barbers there too but not coins that are probably worth grading, but original in most every way otherwise.

Of course I will be on pins and needles about how the halves do in August. I am pleased several of them CAC'd and I think there is one upgrade. Out of that set there is one I am keeping and setting aside that is special to me as to who I got it from and his love of the same coin. It's a gorgeous 1894 in 65 I bought privately from Dale. I had to keep that one for awhile. And while there are several other very special coins as well that I love it's time to recognize I am a dealer and not a collector.

Maybe I will collect Amazonian blow guns or something. LOL.

Thanks guys. I will post some photos along the way of the halves out of the set too. Thankfully I have the pictures to remember them by. image

Looks like its offical, Dr. Duckor has consigned his Quarter Collection

is track the ones I'm interested in - his tastes were a bit more sophisticated

    Edit: 6/25/09

I removed my Barber sets from Viewing and Publication
and PCGS has decided to remove all my sets. Don't know

Tony, Tyler thanks for the kind comments. I have a lot of raw Barbers of all denominations to add to the price list page. A few graded ones too. I am continuing to get things added along the way.

Here is a rather nice half that will be in the Bowers and Merena Auction in Los Angeles out of my set.

I believe there to be 3 Micro O's in AU. One in NGC53 this PCGS55 and the one currently at HLRC in PCGS 58. There are 9 to 10 MS micro O's with I believe the POP reports a bit overstating the true rarity. I suspect Dr. Pete or Harry would have a pretty good handle on this as well and could confirm my statement.

I will do my best to post others along the way leading up to the sale. Dr. Duckor's quarters will be an incredible sale at Heritage as well. If I had chosen to complete the set it would have wound up at No.3. But my path went in a different direction.

Between your Halves and Steve's Quarters there are some
great coins being offered at this year's ANA's auctions.

I'll on the Highway when the auctions are running but
