I will be buying Craig's magnificent set, intact. We are still working out logistics, but this is truly a set in a grade that would be nearly impossible to duplicate. Although I don't get the same thrill of putting this particular set together coin by coin, I did have a small part along the way with making a few of the coins like the 01-O and others (perhaps as many as 6-7 coins in the set), and having put together many sets (besides the gem set), mostly g, vg, and a F/VF set, I certainly have a great appreciation for this set, more so than many collectors.
I look forward to having the coins in hand and being the next care-taker of this set. I have no plans to sell the coins now or in the near future. If a better example in grade comes along (not likely to occur very often), I will certainly consider replacing. However, Craig has done such a great job on this set that it already is a major accomplishment.
For all you barber quarter collectors, the upcoming Stack's sale of Sept 25th has a partial set of barber quarters, mostly in mint states. There looks to be some pretty good dates in there. I will have to hold my water for now.
DR. Pete congratulations. I suspected something was up along these lines and I am pleased for both you and Craig the set will remain intact. It's very rare when a set can be sold like this.
So the next challenge for Barber collectors will be trying to put together an XF set without these magnificent coins available on the market place. We know there is only one XF45 PCGS 1905 half out there (graded) and how hard Craig looked and worked for this coin.
What other dates would be very difficult to find in this grade?
Time for an update on the POP reports to study this.
I just made the #1 Everyman set for Barber Halves. Yeah. I'm number 1 for 1-day until I retire these sets this weekend. Sorry Peter, just had to do it.

USCGCraig that title doesn't really fit you anyhow...
as the level of patience and dedication to do a complete grade matched set isn't something that just any ole Everyman could accomplish!
I hope this comes across as an compliment as the temptation to mix match grades in a set is just too great when you hit the wall of frustration unable to bag your goal during the hunt.

I commented on the Everyman set - before I read the Monster Thread updates.
Congratulations to both you and Peter - I'm very pleased that this set is being kept intact. You've put a tremendous amount of effort into this set and it shows.
Dr. Pete, Craig, Congratulations to both of you. I'm happy to see the set will remain intact...it took a tremendous amount of patience and effort to assemble such an attractive, well-matched set that most thought impossible to achieve. Kudos to you Craig for all your hard work and thank you Dr. Pete for keeping the set together...this set should go down in history as the greatest Mid-Grade Barber Half Set of All Time. Regards, Dave
One major benefit that DrPete received from buying the set intact was all those fantastic images prepaid for by Craig.
I'd download them onto photo-stock paper and set up an album to view at home. Personally I'd like to do the same thing with my sets [ get everything TrueViewed once the sets are where I want them to be ].
The funny part of getting the last coin Craig needed to complete the set in XF 45 was cracking out four 1905-P's in PCGS XF 40 and PCGS AU 50 - and getting Body Bags on three of them and finally getting the XF 45 grade from a previous XF 40 !!
When Craig offered a reward of $500 just to be lead to the 1905-P what would eventually get a XF 45 grade - says alot about the true scarcity of the date. When he was actively searching, there were just two XF 45's. His newly graded coin became the third - and now that the POP is at five [ these two newer additions to the POP report must have been from the group that Craig submitted originally. ]
I'm pleased that Craig entered his set into the Everyman's Sets and will retire as # 1. I won't enter my better coins [ the AU's ] into that set. It wouldn't be complete anyway because of the dozen or so MS coins I have in the set.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Just a quick note - I finally tracked down the last Dime needed for my Certified collection...the 1897-O - and although I would have preferred an AU 58 - this will have to suffice:
This coin originally sold at Heritage a couple of years ago and their images were small enough to post on this Thread.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Congratulations on the completion of your certified, Barber dime set. Nice looking 97-O, and even though it's not an AU-58, the coin probably matches the other coins in your set pretty well.
Mike, GGGORGEOUS quarter and congrats on Photobucket-- you're a pro!

All set up here in Philly after a long day following a long flight. Thankfully a good night's sleep though so reasonably refreshed although you can see I am on left coast time still by this post. Picked up 4 or 5 new Barbers thus far, a couple of quarters and dimes, and also did some homework tonight on several circulated of all the series. If any of you are planning on attending the show here in the next 3 days I would very much look forward to meeting you in person and getting to know you better.
Mike congratulations on the dime set completion, the very beautiful 1894 quarter, and most important Photobucket, NOT!!!!!
Great job with the images though. It is always appreciated and fun to see.
Broadstruck, thank you so much for stopping by and saying hello. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting you, seeing a few of your rather cool coins/errors, and adding a couple to my inventory.
It was also great to wander over to SeaEagleCoins and the three of us get a few minutes together as well.
Thank you for your kind comments. Today was a fairly decent show day for me but it was certainly meeting you that proved to be the icing on the cake.
I also had the chance to meet CaCactions (I probably got that spelled wrong and I apologize in advance) earlier in the day and a few great minutes of conversation as well.
Well I FINALLY got my Barber Halves imaged ('cept the 09-P, I'll do that tonight.) and uploaded the pics to my registry set in my profile.
Right now I have 17 of 'em at PCGS waiting to get Genuned, I mean graded and the 2 NEWPs are kinda weird... I went to the Philly show on Thursday and found only 2 PCGS halves that I didn't already have, the '97O and the '97S! Both in 25.. I don't love the 97O but I figured that I ought to grab it while I had the chance.
I also have 4 dimes at PCGS, also for BBing, I mean grading.. so we shall see... Link to my set is in my profile. I have been working on this set for about 120 days, I think I made some progress!

And here be the dimes! This is a set I just started on, I have 4 at PCGS to be slabbed and just got a NICE 97-S from Larry @ Sea Eagle coins that I need to get slabbed so I can continue this registry set silliness.
The 4 at PCGS are common date coins, but are all nice original VF pieces.
Thanks to RLD14 - I can attach links to my sets - one of these days maybe someone can show this old dog a new trick - by showing how to make the links stay at the bottom - in My Profile.
Under magnification this has some doubling.. looks like it's an RPM too, the book by David Lawrence said that Breen did mention an S/S east, which this appears to be.

There were several Barber threads active yesterday and Dave99 stated that there does not seem to be many dime collectors posting. I agree that most post are related to the halves and quarters. Most of the half and quarter post are about how hard it is to find nice coins in the vf,xf and au grades. I agree with this but let me also say that finding PCGS ms 66 &67 coins that are properly graded, original, and attractive is a real task. Especially if you require them to be fully struck. If you find coins that meet these standards you have to dip into your savings account. Why do the nice ones always have to cost so much???
rld14, that's a superior set of dimes you've begun -- each has just the look I'd want for mine if they were at that nice grade level (mine's more like a g-VG set.) Congrats on some tough coins!
These came from eBay purchases this week... got them both on Thursday for my set of VF Halves. I think the 03-S was visible on eBay for about 10 minutes... Shamelesly swiped sellers pics.

Thanks! I actually lucked into those, I had been mentioning to a dealer that I get a bunch of stuff from and fellow deadhead (SeaEagleCoins) that I wanted to start on the dimes and well he had just gotten those.. and.. well...
I got the 98-O, 00-O, 01-O, 02-O and 10-S from Larry and then, at the same Parsippany show, picked up the 02-S and 09-D from another dealer. I bought the 97-S from Larry also but at the Philly show. I am going to work on the dimes but really have been attacking the Halves with some ferocity of late, I figure I'll take my time and put them together as I can, but at least with the dimes I need an awful lot of coins that aren't too expensive.

Thanks for the very warm wishes everyone. It's really nice to know how much everyone knows about the work that went into putting that set together. I am beyond thrilled that Dr. Pete is going to keep the set together. Would be neat to see if Dave can replicate this set in XF45.
I really wish I could have completed the set as all Circulated Cameos like Tylers Halves. That would have been something. Now I think that will be an impossible dream right now.
I'll keep being a lurker on this thread and would really like to put the Hawaiian coins together and maybe put together the Barber Half set in PCGS F12. That would be fun, not that expensive and a little bit of a challenge.
Anyone interested in a really nice circulated cameo 1901-O Barber Dime in PCGS XF45? I also have a 1916-P Barber Dime in PCGS XF45. I know this isn't the BST. I scanned the coins yesterday but the images came out crappy. Give me a day or so to take some pics. I am on a gimpy knee right now and lots of Percocet. PM me if interested. Prices will be quite reasonable. $85 for the 01-O and $40 for the 16-P. Will do both for $120. Price includes shipping.
Sorry to hear of your knee woes? Didn't you have some surgery on that knee a few years ago? Careful with those Perc's!
I think you ought to pick back up the strict XF45 cause with the Classic Commems-- maybe a type set. I thought you had started a set but maybe I am wrong??
I have some F12 Barber halves if you ever decide. Give me a shout.
What are you going to do as a civilian?
Don
Do your best to avoid circular arguments, as it will help you reason better, because better reasoning is often a result of avoiding circular arguments.
This is actually my 5th surgery on my left knee (3 major and 2 minor scopes). Both ankle have been rebuilt twice and I have an MRI scheduled for my right shoulder for a possible second surgery there. Just paying for all the fun I had in the 90's and 2000's.
Will get on with the Washington State Department of Ecology or with the US EPA. Nice cushy government jobs that will give me another retirement check to go along with my CG retirement and disability checks.
I honestly don't know what I will go after. I'll spend the next few years researching. Needs to be challenging and not something hat everyone else is doing.
I really did admire your set and am glad to see that it's staying intact, you know, it's kind of funny on one hand I suppose buying a set of these kind of takes the fun of the hunt out of it, OTOH, assembling that set is such a mammoth undertaking that it would have been a shame to see it broken up.
Also it wasn't like I lost a shot at grabbing some VF coins

Now that's a REAL NICE quarter. I'd say 64?
Love the 94-P quarter, too. I've seen several 94-P quarters with similar attractive toning, for some odd reason.
My guess is MS64, but I could be talked into a 65.
