Got my packs in a 1984 topps box! Thanks for putting this together. A lot of these packs I have never riped before.

Are we rippin' these things year to year? Meaning, we do all the '89s first then '88s? If so, we have some fun rippin' coming up! Six packs for '1989 to rip!

I'm leaving for vacation tomorrow morning, so I'm going to have to rip the '89s now (I work this afternoon).

    Well?

Arny, you can't just tell us you're going to rip and then not post scans. image

I'm leaving for vacation tomorrow too. Yeah. That's it. That's the ticket. Vacation. In fact, I'm gonna be gone for about a month too. Yeah. A month. Looks like I'll have to rip 'em all now. Yeah, all of 'em.

Well, its officially 10/22 here in Chicago so I thought I'd start this sucker off.

You right coasters are lagging! image

Not much to speak of in the 89 UD pack.

    Here are, (gulp), the highlights.

    image

Eric Davis- In 89 I'd have been pumped about the Davis. He just came off of 3 years of 25+ HRs(back in those days that was an accomplishment). His 85 rc card pretty much topped out areound 89.

Tony Chance - The big Rookie! He is the son of former major leaguer Bob Chance and the Pirates expected big things out of him. He never played a game in the majors and this is the only card that was ever produced of his.

Harold Baines - My old man was a Sox fan, so I pretended I liked them. I'd have been happy to show him this in 89 as the Cubs(my team) as the Cubs won the NL East crown and were 92-63 and the Sox were in the cellar at 62-92. Who knew he would play until he was 42!? Also, he played for only 5 different teams but was traded 7 times. Talk about GM's favorites!

Dave Draveckey- This picture was taken before his arm litterally fell of while pitching. Poor guy.

    Not Pictured

667 Orel Hershiser - WS mvp card
    386 Bob Ojeda
    623 Bill Swift
    531 Greg Mathews
    64 Fred Toliver
    374 Walt Weiss
    587 Dion James
    640 Danny Jackson
    80 Richard Dotson

The highlight of my '89 UD pack was a rough-cut Orel Hersheiser. There was also not one but two Cleveland Indians checklists and a Rafael Palmeiro -- whom I'm not about to honor with a scan.

    Here are my'89 UD:

I'm a diehard Cards fan (since '85, baby!) so seeing a Coleman first card was a nice start.

The highlight of this pack, though, was definitely the Rolando Roomes. I have absolutely ZERO idea who this guy is/was --- but the back of the card was great:

"After nine years in Cub's farm system, Rolando finally made his major league debut in '88. The call-up to the big club came after this speedy Jamaican had put together back-to-back solid seasons at Double-A and Triple-A. He hit .308, 21 HR, and 95 RBI for Pittsfield in '87, and followed this with .301, 16 HR, 66 RBI for Iowa in '88. There could be room for Rolando in Chicago outfield in '89. After 2,988 minor league at-bats, he certainly does not need any more seasoning."

I decided to check the baseball almanac to see how our beloved Jamaican fared in the bigs:
He ultimately had 315 AB's in '89 (for the Reds, though, in trade for Lloyd McClendon) and hit .263 with 7 HR, 34 RBI, and 12 SB

By 1990 he'd already hit his peak, however, as he only was given another 40 or so AB's, had an average of .227 and was released.

Rolando, good buddy, at least you got a shot after all of those minor league AB's!

    My entire pack:
    - Rolando Roomes
    - Carlton Fisk
    - Vince Coleman
    - Tim Wallach
    - Pat Borders
    - Jody Reed
    - Rod Booker
    - Mark Gubicza
    - Jerry Reed
    - Jerry Browne
    - William Brennan (Rookie Star)
    - Vance Law
    - Tom Bolton
    - Steve Lombardozzi
    - Joel Skinner

    Here's my 89ud. I got a Griffey rookie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I couldn't be happier getting this card! I was 10 in 1989 and still have the 89 fleer rookie that I pulled from a pack that year, but I never got the upper deck. The card is off center, but I don't care! I have wanted this card since I was 10, and I can't think of a better way to get one then to pull it from a pack myself.

Here are all of the cards:

    My 1989 UD pack.....

I got a nice Sheffield rookie. Mookie Wilson is the next best thing going.

Interesting note: My dad grew up 2 houses down from Tom Prince, Sr. in Bradley, Illinois.

These cards were beautiful, front and back.

    1989 Upper Deck

Nothing amazing, but here are the goods:

    14 Mike Harkey RC
    39 Dave Dravecky
    56 Rick Rhoden
    209 Scott Bailes
    236 Paul Zuvella
    287 Ron Oester
    348 Timmy Jones
    362 Todd Stottlemyre
    417 Mike LaValliere
    427 Shane Rawley
    507 Bill Pecota
    563 Rick Aguilera
    579 Mike Stanley
    643 Gene Nelson
    678 Will Clark SF Team

This is the first card release I can remember with excellent quality control (great paper stock, consistent gloss, sharp printing, clear photos, good centering, no wax/gum stains, etc.).

Budding wax pack collectors should pay close attention to the seals and folds of the wax packs you have. Since these boxes come from Steve, we can basically assume they are legit, and you can learn a lot about how to pick out legit packs from looking closely at them. Pay special attention to the roller seals on the back and hold them under light and look at the reflection of the roller seal. If you want to learn to spot reseals, buy something from overtimecards on eBay. I'm disappointed (though not surprised) that eBay has let such a crook become and remain a power seller.

    Here's 1989 Topps...

Yikes. I do have the market cornered on Tigers catchers, and I think that Matt Nokes would have been pretty big back in the day...

I hope Greg Harris held on to those shades. They'd be "cool" now.

You can see the stark difference in quality between Topps and UD. I thought Topps had a decent run from 83-87, but started getting lazy with the 88s....

Well no real highlights from either of my two packs for the first two days. All of the cards would not be gradable due to corner damage on each from both the UD and Topps packs. At least I didnt pull a Griffey with a nice wavey corner.

Wasn't the 89 UD Dale Murphy a reverse negative? If so, did you get the backwards version or the corrected version?

    P.S. I think this card is not the reverse neg? BTW, I pulled (2) different Dale Murphy's (#'s 357 & 672)

That's the corrected version. The error had the image reversed so the "A" and the "braves would have been backwards.

    Hey guys,

Tough times so far. The highlight of my '89 UD pack was a Mike Smithson (Red Sox) image

I did pull a Will Clark out of my '89 Topps pack though. I'll post scans if anyone wants to see them that bad.

Isn't that some kind of variation or was that just an urban legend?

See the extra white banner next to his name..never corrected though. Unless I am missing something. There are a few 89 Topps errors though. Olivia "tm",Sheffield Cropping differences,Stan Jefferson "triangle" 3 versions I think.

Nothing special in my '89 T... Kirk Gibson (All-Star) and Don Baylor were the big names.

Sorry for being behind, I was out of town.
Great start with the 89 UD and Topps.
Two HOFers and a rookie who will most likely joiin them.
    Loving this break so far.
