Rare air November 10, 2006 By Jim Carley Special to HoustonTexans.com
The Record is out there. Andre Johnson knows it.
How could he not? Everywhere he turns either a friend or a teammate or a member of the media reminds him in some way.
“I really don’t get caught up in the stats and things like that,” Johnson says. “But yeah, I always have some people saying some things about it to me.”
That’s because The Record isn’t just another number. It’s a big-time serious record, the NFL all-time figure.
The Colts’ Marvin Harrison has it now with 143 catches in 2002. Johnson’s pace this season is not far off that frenetic tempo. He has 65 catches at mid-season and leads the NFL in receptions and yardage (752) and has picked up the beat with each succeeding game.
After five games this season, he was averaging 7.8 catches a game. Now eight games into the year, he’s averaging 8.1.
Even if he doesn’t expand this pace, he’d have 130 catches, a club record and good for second on the NFL all-time list. And no one is counting him out for the No. 1 spot. His teammates think he definitely has it in him.
“I think so,” wide receiver Eric Moulds says. “I think finally this year he’s getting his opportunities to show what he can do. What has been a commitment by the offense and a commitment by the coaches and a commitment by Andre to want to show what he can do is paying off.
“I think he’s excited about the opportunities he’s gotten and the ones he’s going to get. He’s trying to become a complete receiver, not just catch the ball but block down field and being a leader on this team. I think it’s been a season when he’s learning all that at the same time and just continuing to get better.”
Moulds played with superstar receiver Andre Reed in Buffalo and thinks Johnson is similar.
“He reminds me a lot of Andre Reed,” Moulds says. “Both of those guys have unbelievable quickness off the ball and I think he compares to Andre Reed in that sense. When the ball is snapped, he takes off and you can see he’s two or three yards in front of everybody.
“You really can’t teach that as a coach. That’s just God-given ability. And you realize it’s just his fourth year and he’s still really young and he’s still improving. I think eventually if he stays healthy and continues to do the things he can do, he’ll be considered one of the best to ever play the game.”
Opponents each week heap praise on Johnson, like Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio did this week.
“I think Andre is one of the better players in the game, and I've said so since the day I evaluated him coming out (of college),” Del Rio said. “It sure would be nice to have him, but he went to the Texans. He’s a good football player. So no matter what you do with him, he’s going to get some catches.”
The beat just keeps on for Johnson. Last week, he caught nine for 83 yards against the Giants. In just the eighth game of the season, he surpassed his receiving yardage total from last season (688) on his first catch of the game. He also topped 3,500 career receiving yards with his second catch last week.
It’s the kind of season Johnson could only have dreamed of before this year.
“This is the first time I have had this many opportunities,” he said. “It’s fun. It’s my first time to experience this and it’s a lot of fun.
“I didn’t know what to expect coming into the season. I really didn’t know how it would be. But I didn’t expect this.”
While it’s fun to catch lots of passes, it’s not fun to lose. As it does with the rest of the team, it eats at Johnson week after week.
“I don’t pay that much attention to stats,” Johnson said. “I’m all about winning. That’s what’s most important to me.”
Opponents are all about trying to stop Johnson now. Everyone knows he is having a special year, but Johnson doesn’t feel like much of a target yet.
“In the game last week against the Giants, when I was on a side by myself, they would kind of roll coverage into me,” Johnson said. “Other than that, it hasn’t been much different.
“With the offenses we have today, they can’t worry about just one guy. It used to be like that, but we’ve got other guys who can make plays and go down the field.”
Like Moulds, an All-Star in his own right. He was the biggest acquisition the Texans could have made in the offseason, and his 31 catches for 349 yards have helped Johnson. That hasn’t surprised Moulds.
“Not really,” Moulds said. “In the past, he’s just been double- and triple-teamed and now he’s getting more opportunities to get one-on-one coverage and he’s taking advantage of it. So he’s showing what he can do and what he can become.”
Johnson agrees.
“It helps a whole lot having another guy on the other side who can do the same things you do,” Johnson said. “It makes a lot of difference for me.”
And it might make a difference in the NFL record department. He’s not aiming for it or making a big deal about it, but Johnson admits it would mean something.
“It would mean something to anybody to have an NFL record,” he said. “But I’m not thinking about that. I’m just trying to get the wins.”

Owen Daniels diary November 09, 2006 By Owen Daniels HoustonTexans.com
Editor's note: Tight end Owen Daniels will be providing periodic diary entries for HoustonTexans.com to give fans insight into the life of a rookie draft pick.
In a perfect world, we’d be undefeated right now, but since it isn’t, we have to face reality. We lost a tough game this past weekend at New York, and now our record stands at 2-6 at the halfway point.
I can’t ever remember being on a team that was 2-6. Maybe back in junior high, but never in high school or college. There’s still half a season left to play and we can very easily turn it around to be 6-2 over the next eight games. That’s a lofty goal, but no one can say that it can’t be done. Nobody on the team is negative about it, that’s for sure. I can’t say what’s going on in my teammates’ minds, but there’s definitely no negativity from any of the players or coaches. We all try to stay very positive.
Going into the next half of the season, I don’t foresee any drastic changes. There might be some changes with our schedule in terms of meeting times and practice times. It’s such a long season that the coaches might want to cut back to reduce the wear and tear on our bodies.
One of the things we’ve done now that we’ve completed eight games is look at what we’ve accomplished and what we can improve on, both collectively and individually. I can honestly say that I didn’t have very many individual goals going into the year. I just wanted to learn from the older guys and learn their tricks of the trade.
If you had told me that after eight games I would be sitting here with five touchdowns and whatever stats I have, I would have thought that was awesome. Even having those numbers after a season, it’d still be great for me. I’d like to at least match what I did the first half of the season over the next eight weeks. I just want to continue getting better in the running game and in the pass protection and make the most I can out of every play that I’m in there. My main goal is to win, obviously, but also to try to play as close to a perfect game as I can. It’s very hard to do. I don’t think very many people can say they’ve played a perfect game, and that’s my motivation.
Of course, it’ll be tough to play that perfect game this weekend. The Jaguars have a great defense. One good thing about playing at Jacksonville, though, is that I get to see my grandparents. I haven’t seen them since draft day. They live right outside of Tampa and they’re driving up to catch the game.
Outside of the NFL, I’m still a huge sports fan and I’m excited about the college basketball season starting. I’m a college sports fan in general. If I wasn’t playing in the NFL, I would watch NFL games and college football, just because they’re pretty similar to each other. After that, anything college is better than anything pro, in my opinion. Wisconsin has a good basketball team. I think we’re ranked in the top 10. We usually have a solid team, but Wisconsin basketball is great this year. Then again, I love anything Wisconsin.
By the way, it’s my birthday today. I wouldn’t mention it except my parents got me a grill for my birthday and that’s something I really wanted for my little porch area. I’ll put in some tables and chairs and then it’ll be perfect. I’ve got to go catch an episode of ‘The Office’ tonight. I missed it last week, don’t ask how because I have TiVo, but I missed it.
Gotta go!
Owen

" After running back Fred Taylor said that next week's game against Houston will be a "totally different type of ball game,'' than the Jaguars' 27-7 loss in Houston two weeks ago, he was asked why. Because we won't lose this time,'' he said. "That's what you wanted, right?''

Thursday Kubiak quotes November 09, 2006 HoustonTexans.com
Head coach Gary Kubiak spoke to the media after practice on Thursday.
Head coach Gary Kubiak
(on sick players returning to practice) “They were a little sluggish today. But they’re out here; they’re going to be fine. It’s just natural coming off being sick, but I think we’ll be okay. Nobody else got sick today, all those guys are back so it’s just a little puny.”
(on naming new captains for the second half of the season) “What we decided to do, we visited as coaches and we talked about it the decision we made is that we’re going to go with the weekly captains for the next eight weeks. I think we’re a team that’s growing and I think we’ve got new guys stepping up every week and we’re going to give players (a chance). (Defensive coordinator) Richard (Smith), (offensive coordinator) Troy (Calhoun) and (special teams coordinator) Joe (Marciano) will pick a captain from each area each week and just give them a chance to take on a different role every week and just see over the next eight weeks who steps up. I thought it was a great idea on behalf of the coaches to decide to go that way.”
(on this week’s team captains) “I haven’t made that decision; we’ll make that decision tomorrow. We’ll make that decision on Friday every week.”
(on whose idea it was) “The coaches, we talked about it last night and I told them we’d like to revote for captains at the halfway mark and they made a decision and said, ‘why don’t we do it week to week and give these guys a chance to step up?’. I think it’s a great idea.”
(on why he likes that idea) “We’re finding out, we’ve got some new guys stepping up all the time and I think we need to get some guys an opportunity to step up for the football team. We’re finding out a lot about each other. I think the more guys we have step up along the way the better future there is.”
(on it being unusual to pick weekly team captains) “They tell me that they may have done that here in the past a little bit. In Denver we did it; we picked our captains at the halfway mark, we repacked them again. The thing I see here is every week it seems like some new face pops up and does something more special and leads. I think we have some very young players on this team that our guys think a whole hell of a lot. A lot of times guys won’t put a rookie in this spot or that spot just because of the nature of this league. But we’re such a young team that I want to see (LB) DeMeco Ryans get a chance to be a captain one week, he deserves it. I want to see players like (TE) Owen Daniels. I think (in) our football team (if) we put those guys in those positions the quicker they’ll grow up.”
(on defense’s confidence as they improve) “That’s what’s happening. First of all, there’s a very young player in a leadership position, our middle linebacker. He’s quiet by nature to begin with. He’s gotten more vocal and more confident in what he’s doing and our older guys are wanting him to lead. That’s been a growth process going on. (DE) Mario (Williams) getting better every week. Our back end is getting better since (CB) Petey (Fains) came back in; they’ve played very, very well. It’s a young group and it knows it’s got a chance to play together for a long, long time and that’s special because in this league it’s hard to keep a group of guys together for a while. It’s a very young defensive football team that we should be able to hold intact for quite a while.”
(on Jacksonville containing LB DeMeco Ryans) “He’s been a pretty consistent player. He’s going to get a chance to play to be an influence in the game because this team is very committed to the run right now and have been over the past two or three weeks and this kid moves around and boots. If you’re playing Mike linebacker on anybody’s defense you’re going to have a chance to have an impact on the game.”
(on Bears’ DE Mark Anderson deserving of midseason rookie of the year awards) “I can’t talk about that kid because I really haven’t stayed on Chicago this year. We haven’t played them and they haven’t been part of our process this year. But I understand he’s a heck of a player. Those things work themselves out. When we start talking about them on week eight that’s very premature it’s kind of like the MVP in this league. What happens those last eight weeks of this season that’s the difference maker week in and week out they’ll play themselves out. If DeMeco keeps playing the way he’s playing (and) Mario keeps growing the way he’s growing I’m sure they’ll have their opportunities for many awards.”
(on a rookie being better than LB DeMeco Ryans) “He’s as good as I’ve been around. The thing about him is he’s a worker, he hasn’t missed a day, cares about what’s going on and I think the type of person that he is has really helped him become a great player pretty quickly.”
(on comparing Broncos LB Al Wilson to LB DeMeco Ryans) “Well, Al (Wilson) was special coming out. I can’t remember back then if he played right away. I couldn’t recall, but he’s a special player. I was telling somebody the other day that I’d love this offseason to have Al spend a few days with (LB) DeMeco (Ryans) and just talk football and stuff, talk defense because that is Al’s passion. That’s his life, and I’d love for them tow to get to hook up and meet each other and talk a little bit.”
(on the status of the players that were ill yesterday) “Everybody seems fine. I think they’re a little puny on our defensive line today, but they’re okay. They’ll be fine. They’re alright.”
(on whether he thinks Al Wilson and DeMeco Ryans will meet in the offseason) “I don’t know. You brought it up, and I had the conversation the other day with somebody. So I don’t know. Those guys that tend to play the same spot around this league, they tend to become friends or confidants in a lot of ways. That would be a great guy for him to talk a little ball with.”

Jaguars quarterback David Garrard has been nominated for the FedEx Express Air NFL Player of the Week honors. Fan voting began today at noon and continues through Thursday at 5 p.m. at NFL.com. This is Garrard's first career nomination.
Garrard threw a career-high three touchdown passes, completing 12 of 22 attempts for 177 yards and a 120.6 passer rating in the Jaguars' 37-7 victory over the Tennessee Titans. Garrard opened the game with first-quarter touchdown passes of 11 and 14 yards to Ernest Wilford and George Wrighster. He added a 22-yard touchdown pass to Wilford in the third quarter.

Peter King's defensive rookie for the 1st half goes to, Demeco Ryans
<< <i>Defensive Rookie 1. DeMeco Ryans, middle linebacker, Houston; 2. Donte Whitner, strong safety, Buffalo; 3. Ernie Sims, outside linebacker, Detroit. Through five weeks, Ryans was the leading tackler in football; now he's tied for fourth. Instinctive and ferocious, Ryans might end up having more impact on the Texans than Mario Williams, though Williams has played much better the last couple of weeks.
Without much fanfare, rookie DeMeco Ryans has teamed with No. 1 pick Mario Williams to form a quickly improving Texans defense. >>

Like that kid averaging 2.6 ypc? lol. Unfortunately Domanick Davis went down, but they'll have plenty to pick from(as will the Bucs) in the upcoming draft. I'm just hoping Zbikowski will be available for the Giants in the tail end of the first round of the draft. He could either stay at Safety or play in the nickel, and possibly beefup and be a devestating LB.

<< <i>Ah, there's nothing like rooting for your home team.
Regardless if they win or lose, it's still your team.
Watching a rookie grow as a player and a person right before your eyes.
Going tailgating with friends, cooking some good grub, and downing a few beers at home games.
Seeing every game live rather than a delayed internet service for recent bandwagoners.
People can flame all they want on your team; it just proves that they have nothing to cheer for
Just shows they have absolutely, positively have nothing better to do with their time.

This Kumbaya crap is gonna make someone climb a tower with a rifle.
Texans actually could pull this one out again. They seem to be getting better and may have the chance to pick up on Garrard's weaknesses after a few starts.

Owen Daniels diary
November 09, 2006
By Owen Daniels
HoustonTexans.com
Gotta go!
Owen
Because we won't lose this time,'' he said. "That's what you wanted, right?''
Taylor then was asked if that was a guarantee.
"What did it sound like?'' he responded."

Thursday Kubiak quotes
November 09, 2006
HoustonTexans.com

Sorry that my posts about houston texans are out of place in the 'official houston texans thread'.
<< <i>Defensive Rookie

Hey moron-
I have NEVER welched on a bet - EVER. I should be saying the same to YOU, as we all know you have the self control of an infant.
I wonder if you'd be making this bet if the texans had lost the first game - oh well, they're still going to lose.
And speaking of mud? I received more than one PM during your stupid poll that said you were exactly that - MUD.
<< <i>Funny, I got at least 20% MORE saying that you were a good for nothing chump >>
20% more than what?
Or are you simply pulling numbers and phrases out of your ass AGAIN? A good for nothing chump? This coming from YOU, the very essence of what 'good for nothing' means?

You have no purpose here whatsoever.

Huh?
That's what I thought.
Oh and edited to add: At a bare minimum, 20% MORE people didn't like you.
<< <i>
Poor Twinkerbell gets owned left and right, so she tries to find something else to yap about. >>
The only one that's getting owned is YOU, dipchit. Your stupid little poll didn't turn out how you wanted it to, even with all your little alts you loaded up. YOU'RE PATHETIC.
You keep going on and on and on about this magical 20% number...so 20% more people dislike me than like me? So what? Are you one of those pathetic little tools that runs around, kissing everyone's ass, hoping and praying to fit in so that EVERYONE will like you? Are you the bootlicker at the office that everyone knows will do the chit work so you'll be accepted?
Here's a clue (as you obviously have NONE): they are all LAUGHING AT YOU.
They don't like you, they are taking advantage of your massive insecurities and need to be accepted and liked by everyone.
NOBODY is liked by everyone - NO ONE. They'll tell you that they like you to your face, clownboy, but when you walk away, they laugh uncontrollably at your gullibility. They laugh at how pathetic you are, how desperate you are for attention. They laugh at how you'll do anything they want - simply for a pat on the head and an 'atta boy!'
So 20% more people dislike me than like me? At least those who like me do so because I am who I am - not by pretending to be someone or something I am not.
Now that you've been OWNED, get the f out of here, you've got some toliets to clean.
