That Connie Johnson is quite the bump. VCP for a 9 is $152.75. The only 10 to sell listed on VCP was 7 years ago for over $5,500. Wow nice job. Love the 59s. First set i ever completed, and I wish I would not have sold it a few years ago.

I'm referring to the fact that in mariner's set, the PSA 9 Don Larsen card is described as pop 1 within the spec # but pop 17 within the total population. But I could find no reference to any variation of that card.
I think it's because sometime in the last couple weeks PSA has started to distinguish between white and gray backs. So Don's Larsen is Pop 1, but in reality there are 17 total Larsens that are PSA 9.
I'm not really sure how I feel about it. I've always thought that white vs gray was more available in equal amounts, so no really point in distinguishing. If PSA decides to make the Master Set mean one each of gray and white I'm not bothering with it.
I have done both gray and white backs for my 59 and 60 sets. And the white and black bios for my 53 set. Next year I will try to finish my 56 set in gray and white. But I have mostly given up doing that for my 52 and 54 sets
I seem to recall the white backs being tougher when doing the 59s
I don't mind the idea of distinguishing between the backs on the flip, it just bugs me that every copy graded so far defaults to one back type now, and few collectors will bother to correct them, skewing the population data.
Dan is correct......just within the last few weeks, PSA has started grading the series 199-286 with the gray versus the white back variations. This was also a surprise to me as I found out about it on my most recent card review submission where I had four cards in that range come back reholdered and with the white/gray on the label.
I have had email exchanges with Priscilla who is part of the Set Registry team about it. My emails included BJ and Cosetta as well.
For the Basic set, they have the either/or set up so that the cards get included in the Basic set no matter whether they have no designation or have the white or gray back designation. They do not have the Master set or the Team sets or others set up that way, so that is why my Master set now does not show me as 100% complete. I cannot add those four cards to my set as they will not accept. PSA has to set those sets up with the either/or as well.
In my communication with Priscilla, BJ and Cosetta, I suggested that they do not screw up the Master set and Team sets with the white/gray backs, but create a 1959 Topps Super set which would be the Master set plus the cards with the back variations. I referenced the fact that they have already done this with the 1962 Topps Super set which has the green tints plus all the Master set variations. This way, the 1959 Topps Master set and Team sets stay the same as they are now and if a collector wants to also collect the back variations, then they will have the Super set to register.....without the back variations messing up the Master set and Team sets for all of us on the Master set.
Priscilla emailed me and said that they agree with my suggestion and that she will set all of this up as requested. She is working on it now and hopefully it will all be set up properly within a few days. Priscilla has been very customer service oriented and very nice to work with on this request. Of course, we all know that the Set Registry team are all great to work with.
I will post a scan of the Hodges card that I got back with the Gray Back variation on the label to show you all.

What amazes me is the #1 set, JTM's 1959 Topps, which is owned by John McLaren has a weighted GPA of 8.80. I can not imagine how fantastic his set must look! Whew!!!
...and 10 years later, Don's set is at 8.77. The thread has come full circle!
Just received this beauty in the mail today to add to my set...the O'Dell card is one of the tougher cards in the set plus the bonus here is that this one is a gray back....

Don-- you should take a look too. The guy is a real 59 fan and although the site highlights a lot of variant cards, he posts some real nice graded examples of many. From the first page click on "older posts" to scroll through
As for Bob, he kind of reminds me of Grumpy Smurf....except a little taller....and not as blue...and a different hat
Hi Mariner, I enjoy your posts. I'm getting a new scanner and would appreciate knowing the make and model of the one you use to get such good imaging of your cards. Thanks, kidsox. a 1959 thread reader.

33 Fitzgerald can be found with a blue streak in the g of his name on front. Not hard to find on ebay.
103 Goodman can be found with a red streak in upper front border above the y in his name. Scarce but recurring, hard to spot in some ebay scans.
337 Crowe more often that not can be found with red dot in brim of his cap. Harder to find one without
