Don himself looked pretty good at the D Back/Ranger game at Salt River in Scottsdale yesterday. Game was not great as bulk of Ranger team was in San Antonio facing the Royals

Don invited Anthony and I to supper on Sunday. He grilled this. It tasted like chicken

I love the cards posted. Nothing like a pack fresh card in a 9 holder.

I only collect NY Yankees in this year.

Quick question: when did PSA start to recognize the white and gray backs?

All my 59's don't have any reference on the flip.

Also, does anyone know why there are 2 diff color backs? did Topps run out and have a run of another color?

Two different color backs within the same series, or different series, occurs in many of the 50s and 60s Topps sets, among them 52, 53, 54, 56, 59 and 60. Whatever material they had on hand or the most of was apparently used. One or the other stock, the less dominant of the two, usually holds a slight premium in price , except for 52 and 54 where there is a large premium for the very scarce gray backs, which some believe were produced by a separate printer, possibly in Canada.

Last year I was able to finish out my 59 set in both white and gray back. I do not do graded cards but think PSA recognition of the different backs in the 59 set is pretty recent

Yes, PSA just very recently began labeling and grading the 3rd series cards as white versus gray backs. When they started it (not at my request), I did request that they create a Super set and not mess with the Master set for the whites vs grays.....they did that.

Woof ? Is that like a secret sports card board greeting

Mr Anderson, who died just last year, was involved in one of baseball's weirdest plays in a game between the Cubs and Cardinals in 1959. Bob was a mariginal participant, the primaries being Musial, Al Dark and Ernie Banks. Anyone know....remember...what happened ? It involves Musial trying to go all the way to 3B after drawing a walk

A called ball 4 to Musial from Anderson eludes Sammy Taylor and Musial starts to first. Taylor and Anderson start to argue with the ump that Musial had tipped the ball foul and that is why Taylor failed to catch it. When Musial gets to first he sees this going on and starts to second. Al Dark sees this going on and goes to get the ball, which has been picked up by a field personnel. Anderson sees Musial on the way to second and grabs a second baseball from the umpire and throws to second, but throws wild and the ball goes into center . Musial sees this and heads for 3d. Meanwhile Dark, who had been playing 3d grabs the ball back from the field attendant and throws it to Banks who tags Musial out before he gets to 3d. The umpires uphold the out call.

But the story has a happy ending. The Cards beat the Cubs 4-1.

    Beautiful card, Clarke.

And a "perfect" Susce. By the way, George was a junior, as is reflected on his 56 Topps card. His dad of the same name was a big league catcher in the late 30s and early 40s

Um, I'm sorry but I need to register a complaint (maybe I should click "Report Don to a Moderator." Your card(s) are gorgeous, and your scans are loverly, but when I click on your 1959 Topps Master Registry set, there are some cards with no scans. Tsk, tsk. You, sir, are a tease. Not only are there a buttload of PSA 9's without a scan, there are FREAKING PSA 10's with no scan. For shame. image

How's this for crazy talk. I'm intending to redo all 20,000 scans in the next couple of years, because PSA relaxed their size restrictions after I was mostly finished, and now I'm unhappy with the image size on the ones I've done. I think I can complete the task again within two years. Ugh.

Oh oh Don. Not only a 9 but also with the variant white dot on lower right front border. Scarce but recurring. That ups it to 9.25 on the Richter Scale image

    Dick never looked better Don.

He can be found with a red line or dark line in the lower right front border. Both are recurring
but scarce. Sadly, Brown died of brain cancer at the age of 35
