    Another anecdote -

Got some hepatitis shots today at work. The guy giving the shots saw my Yankees lanyard I use for my employee ID.

He grimaced and asked "did that first shot hurt?"

    I said "no."

    He said "damn."

I replied "do you want me to drop my pants for the second one?"

He added that he is a Bucs fan.

I asked him if he had any extra needles.

I would just like to take this opportunity to do two things. First is bump the thread back up, second is to declare Bernie Williams still alive and well.

Bernie's going through a phase like Tino did last year, when he hit a ton of home runs.

    He'll retire after this year.

Who cares if he stays or retires. Neither will detract from him having been a great player, teammate and role model for the better part of two decades. He is having a great year, and has stepped up his game when the team needs him most. That alone is alot more than can be said for a certain guy who is supposed to be in his prime and one of the top 2 or 3 in the game today.

Axtell - why don't you just go away. We have known for a long time that you can't pass up an opportunity to piss on Bernie Williams. It's part of your assinine mantra. It only supports the opinion that you do not know what you are talking about, and your opinions are biased. See ya.

It's not pissing on a guy in stating the truth.

Tino had a nice run of games last year with home runs, and he was smart enough to hang it up. I wonder if Bernie is too?
  • Popular belief(from non Yankee fans) is that Bernie should've hung it up about 2 years ago. Plain and simple, he's still getting it done. As long as he wants to be a Yankee, I think all us fans will be happy to have him.

I hate the Yankees, always will. I watch enough of their games to know about their players. I am convinced that Bernie Williams is still a solid player and very much valuable as a contributor on and off the field. If he hangs it up, it will be a disservice to the Yankees...so from a Sox fan, please hang up the spikes Bernie! We're tired of getting burned by you!

Cano directly benefits from being on a team full of all stars.

Any player who isn't an Arod, a Giambi, an established hitter in that yankees lineup is going to get protection, no matter where they bat.

I am sorry this concept is so foreign to you, but with the murderer's row they have, any player no respected is going to get a great number of balls to hit. As I have stated time and again, Cano still has to make that contact, get those hits, but he's benefitting from that lineup around him.

If you don't believe that, well, there's nothing more to say about the topic. I honestly believe he does benefit from being in such a potent lineup, and if you don't, well, nothing I can say will change your mind, and you sure as hell aren't going to change mine.

Nice game this afternoon. Mussina looked good. That leadoff hitter they got from Boston doesnt look too shabby. Neither does washed up Bernie or Mariano. Too bad Mr. Rodriguez had another 0-fer.

I dont want to see them make any trades involving anyone this year. The way things stand they either beat out Boston and Toronto outright for the division or the probably dont make the playoffs. Its not the end of the world if they miss the postseason this year, they wont have enough to go all the way no matter what. No reason to mortgage the future for any reason this year. Keep things as they are, see how it plays out, and if it doesnt get them there, ohh well. No disgrace in missing out on a playoff birth with some of the key injuries they have had. Life will go on and there is always next year with a healthy squad and the young talent still intact.

Unfortunatley I would believe Steinbrenner dissagree's with your approach Bri, sounds good but the season is a failure if you guys dont win it all.
  • Giambi just blasted his second shot of the night...and ya know what? Even as he rounded the bases, i couldn't help but think"That's a steroid cheatin' motherf___er" I guess I'm a fan of the game before all else. If we rip on Bonds for cheating ( and I do) I feel we gotta feel the same way about our own players. Altough I admire the way Jason has handeled himself in the aftermath, whenever I see his name I can't help but think of baseball's biggest black eye since the BlackSox scandel.

Its pretty sad when my 2 favorite guys in a Yankee uniform are coaches, Mattingly and Guidry.

All the overpriced free agents should not be re-signed. Keep Jeter, A-Rod, Matsui, and Posada, and build with the farm system and smart signings of younger players. They probably will need to spend $$$$ on pitching, regardless.

If the Boss could stop meddling, I seriously think the Yankees could be a better team with half the payroll. If the GM were allowed to do his job and make smart personnel decisions with a generous (say $120m) but not outrageous budget, the farm system would develop faster (or not get traded) and they would sign younger, more durable players.

That is very admirable of you coin to worry about how the Yanks should re-build. image Lets not forget with ALL of the problems this year from Randy Johnson, the middle relief, Matsui going down, Sheffield going down, Damon playing with a broken toe, Cano getting hurt recently, Posada missing games with a hamstring injury the Yankees are just 2 1/2 games behind the Red Sox.

You missed my point -- not re-build, just RE-LOAD with better value and younger talent, not overpriced veterans in the last third of their careers. You would keep Cano, your young bench players (Cabrerra, etc), and Wang as well. Your point that the Yanks are still competitive after losing the services of the overpriced veterans shows that they are almost as good without them.

I hear ya coin. It is no secret that the Yankees would be alot better off in the future bringing up kids from the minors OR trading for young talent. Thats what they did in the early 90's and the result was 4 World Championships.

You know big papi is wondering, jeez what more can i do to carry this stinkin team, and we are only 2 /12 up, d*mn

Also, as much as i love soriano (no matter what your feelings are, the guy can flat out play ball), i don't think a yankees return is in his future, when they traded him, they knew his upside, didn't know about Cano really, and still traded him, so something must be there that irks certain higher level yanks somewhere.

Yep he juiced, yep Im done with him. The game of baseball is far more important than any one player. He and others have tarnished the game and left a scar on it that will never be forgotten. I give him credit for being a man and admitting some sort of wrong doing ( though even that was convoluted at best ), but he should still just go away and take Sheffield with him. Maybe them and the other juice heads can do a barnstorming tour of Japan or something, as long as they are gone from MLB.

Giambi juiced, which means he CHEATED, which means he can get lost any second now ..... forever. I know he is a really nice guy, who realizes he made a huge mistake unlike others who have done this. But you know what? He can cry about it on the lecture circuit telling young athletes what an IDIOT he was helping RUIN the true credibility of baseball.

<< <i>I gotta say Im suprised you want Giambi gone, I meen the guy apoligized and made a mistake. I assume because he juiced your through with him, Give the guy a break he plays hard and is a solid hitter for you. >>

I think it is likely that Giambi is still taking HGH. He made quite a remarkable comeback after getting very ill and supposedly getting off the "juice".

The Yankees can't hope to linger near the Red Sox and stay ahead of the Blue Jays with the STALE, LACKLUSTER way they have been playing for a while. And A-Rod ....... even I have had about enough with his inept play at crucial spots in the game. Same story in todays game ..... now they are down in what seems like the 200th inning.
