The official DERAILED 2006 New York Yankees thread

softparadesoftparade Posts: 9,276 ✭✭✭✭✭
I like the new trend of specific team threads. Maybe the Yankee fans from this board can get together in this thread and talk about what is going on instead of the endless fighting that goes on in other threads. I am politely asking those who feel the need to endlessly hyjack Yankee threads to stay away. Maybe this can stop some of the MORONIC crap that goes on here. The bashers can bash away in other threads and Yankee fans can get to actually talk about the team in this thread. image

Now, NOT GOOD news about Posada's hamstring tendon. I read he is out for a "couple days" but a catchers hammy? Not good.

    Love the Yanks.

Can't wait to walk into Yankee Stadium in a few weeks.

    Axtell sucks.
  • Yeah, Posadas' injury will bother him for quite a while. But there are some youngins that could be brought in instead of Stinnett having to shoulder the majority of the duites. I didn't like the fact that the Yankees traded away the young c Dioneer to the Padres, I thought he had a lot of upside. But the Yankees farm system is really going to start producing soon for the Yankees; hopefully Cash won't trade away more of the youngsters. IMO, the main reason the Yankees had there most recent run is from the farm system(Posada, Williams, Jeter, Pettite) but I think the management has realized that and are starting to keep there prospects(Small, Wang, Cano, etc.).

    Topps,

The Yankees have made it known that trading away the farm is a practice ended. While we don't have many major league ready guys besides Melky who has shown promise at 21 years old we do have alot of good young talent in the lower levels leading of with Phillip Hughes. Time will tell but the Yanks are looking to build with youth in the near future. I am happy about that at this moment.

I get to see the Yanks A ball team every year when they come to Ft. Myers and play the Twins A Miracle.

Last year they had a kid, Tyler Pelland. About 23 and he threw smoke. This year he's in AA at Chattanooga. 3-1 w/ 3.83 ERA, 47 IP.

I'd look for him in a year or two.

The Yanks Double A team in Trenton is 45 minutes from me. Philip Hughes just got promoted from Tampa and has had mixed results thus far. He is only 19 years old and has a big time arm.

are you sure we are allowed to have this thread ? I mean seriously, arent the Yankees talked about way too much already ? Isnt there some rule against fans talking about them in a thread other than one where we have to defend them ? Perhaps we should have consulted a few of the resident haters first and politely asked their permission before continuing on.

I found it interesting that jeter will get his 2000 hit 1 year longer then it took pete rose.

I looked it up last nite. it took rose 10 and a quarter yrs. it has taken jeter 11 and a quarter.

Then it dawned on me that jeter missed almost 1/3 of a season a few years back so in reality it is less then a 1 year difference.

i did not do it with at bats.

Maybe later i will and report back with my findings.

For those that don't know ...

I am a Phillies fan first and foremost ... but I grew up in the mid to late 70's (my influential years) liking the Red Sox and the Yankees. Go figure. Family relatives were the cause, but my Dad is a Phillies fan so there you have it. Phils over anyone, Red Sox over anyone but the Phils, and the Yanks .... well I really haven't liked them since Giambi - nothing personal about him, I just can't get into rooting for them anymore.

I think Gemmy had alot to do with that. Seriously.

and Arod ... no idea why.

In any event, it was the tales of Yankee history through the words of my Pop Pop that I think did it for me when I was a kid. There is no other team or has ever been another team that comes close to their success. He saw them all from Ruth to Mantle, and I always loved hearing his version of things. So I still remember those stories when I see the Yanks, and I know he would have been a huge fan of Jeter.

Getting back to the thread ...

great stuff 1420! Even if you hate them now. At least ya hate them with class image

I just heard that the tendon that Posada hurt is behind the knee and attached to the hamstring. Supposedly the tendon is not needed and in fact it is a tendon commonly thieved from the knee to do replacement elsewhere. The problem is it causes pain ..... interesting

This is indeed interesting. If my math is correct I estimate it took pete just shy of 6500 at bats to reach 2000 hits.

What i did was the seasonhe actually got to 2000 I used his average for the yr.

in his first 10 years pete got 1922 hits, needing 6227 at bats.

the yr he reached 2000 r his average was 338

it is known that he needed 78 hits to reach 2000

using his average for that yr. it appears he needed 230 at bats

thus pete needed 6457 at bats to reach 2000 hits

as for games played it appears that Jeter and Rose needed 1500+ (almost the same)!

Mussina isnt looking too good tonight. And, as per the usual, Kay is already making excuses should the Yanks lose. I really cant stand this guy. The Yankees go 2 inning without scoring and he is already talking about how deceptive and tricky the Royals pitchers' motion is, how he short arms it, etc etc etc. Can we go one night of watching a Yankees game where they actually call things as they are instead of making excuses ? It really is ok to have a bad night and lose. It happens to everyone, and certainly often enough in baseball where we dont need 17 explanations as to why it isnt their night.

See, and I couldnt bear listening to him or Sterling. They are both lame. I talked about this in another thread. It seems like every other day they add someone new to the broadcasting lineup....who are we up to now, Sterling, Kay, Murcer, Singleton, O'Neill, Stanley, Leiter, Waldman....am I missing anyone ? Kay sucks, Sterling sucks, Leiter just never shuts up and has to overanylze every pitch, and Waldman is the single most annoying person who has ever been given a voice in sports.

  • Congrats to Jeter on his 2,000th hit! Another classy Yankees player.

  • WinPitcher, great analysis on Jeter. Gosh, maybe if he stays healthy and plays into his early 40's like Rose did, Jeter can break Rose's record. Although, I hate the Yankees Jeter is a class guy. Heard on MLB.TV tonight that Jeter is only the 2nd Yankees since Gehrig to have 2,000 hits before the age of 32. He is in good company. But hey, he is not worthy of didly squat since Axtell says so.
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
I am of the opinion that jeter will not play long enough to get near Rose. I do however agree that he is a class guy. My son met him a few times (we knew someone that lived in the same apartment) as he did back in the day. he was always very nice to the kids and signed autos everytime they would meet up. My son has about 4 or 5 of them.

I predict he will retire with more then 3000 hits.

    Congrats to him.

    Steve

    Good for you.
  • WinPitcher, what makes you think he will not play as long as Rose? Throughout Jeter's career he has been pretty durable and the most he was out was 6 or 7 weeks when he separated his shoulder a few years ago.
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
    My thinking was

rose played till he was what 44?

rose was a degenerate gambler that had to play cuz he needed money

jeter I would think does not.

I did not mean that he would breakdown

    steve
    Good for you.
  • WinPitcher, from everything I read Jeter loves to play the game. If he keeps healthy I don't know why he wouldn't want to play into his 40's, especially if his skills don't deteriorate and his has a chance to be the all time hit leader.

Thought you all may like an "outsiders" opinion on the current Yanks.

Today's crop of players, like Jeter, Bernie, Posada, even Arod ---- you really never gear anything bad about them....and I would suspect that the NY press would be able dig up something, if anything occurred.

JMO, but it is difficult to root against the players...heck, they all seem to want to win every game.....for example, Jeter diving in crowd after a fly ball last year.

Yep - tough to hate 'em as they do play hard....gotta respect em for that.....must be me mellowing with age.....image

My days of when I became a Yankees fan...Yankees and Royals in the 1977 Playoffs. And then all of those awesome games for the next few seasons into the early 80s. I didnt know who to hate more...the Red Sox or the Royals! It's amazing how popular that 1977 team was. I've seen a couple of those memorabilia shows put on by Stiener on the YES Network where people have pretty much surrounded a large part of their collection with that team. I would love to see that rivalry renewed.

I became a Yankee fan in early season 1976. At first I though I was a Met fan as they were the only team I had seen on TV at that time. Then my father took us on a group trip to Yankee Stadium to see them play the Brewers and as a 6 year old kid I was pretty impressionable. Yankee fan since that day image

  • I became a Yankees fan through family. My father used to go to the games with his Dad back in the 50s-early 60s. He was able to see first hand some of the greatest ballplayers to ever step on that field. He also went there one time with his little league team and got to run the bases at Yankees Stadium, and he met all the starters on a few occasions. That and where my family is from just molded me into a Yankees fan at a young age. I mean, I'm 20. But I remember the days of Winfield, Donnie B, and Kevin Mass. When Steve Sax came to NY. Then just like ya'll I remember the strike shortened year; another old memory was Randy Johnson vs. Don Mattingly. For some reason 1 at-bat just sticks in my mind. I remember watching Jeter coming up. He was honestly one of the first players I ever watched their whole career. I remember writing a school report after the Yankees won it in Jetes rookie year and having tons of Newark Star Ledger newspapers from my Grandparents home in Fords NJ. My Grandma rocks, she keeps just about every Sports page and special(poster, pullout, drawings) as well as the cartoons. But yeah, I'm definetly a lifer.

I got into baseball in 1986 when I just finished elementary school. I got hooked on a young player named Mattingly and my Yankee fandom grew from there.

I liked the Angels since I was living in California, but I could not get passionate enough with them. Since Jim Abbott left the team, it was not interesting anymore. On the other hand, the Yankees grew on me more and more with the rise of Williams, Jeter, Posada, Rivera and the additions of Boggs, Cone, Abbott, Raines, Sierra, Strawberry, Sheffield, Gooden.... Now with Mattingly retired from playing over 10 years ago, I am still hooked on the Yankees. The baton has been passed successfully with Jeter, Williams, Rivera, ....

  • << <i>Dallas. The entire Yankee team from 1995-2000 were tough to hate. That was before the Yankees tried to put a allstar at every position and stopped winning championships. Anyway, I really do wish the the days when I truly hated the Royals could come back. You know, Brett, Wilson, McCrae, Gura, Quiz ...... I HATED that team image They were so good image >>

    soft,

This has always been my explanation to people when they ask me why I don't hate the Yankees. I always say how can you hate Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada or Joe Torre? These are classy guys. In fact, I have always felt that this generation's Yankees (well, outside of the odd Randy Johnson outburst) personify class.

Hopefully today shows a Randy Johnson who is learning to pitch without being overpowering. I think we know we cant expect him to do this every game now...but hopefully a little more consistancy and win some ball games.

This thread is great reading!!! If I could throw in my own 2 cents here. First I live in Mass. so I am a RedSox fan. But I must say, the Yankees are baseball history. I will never forget seeing a game for the first time in the house that Ruth built. Yankee Stadium is a baseball icon. Also congrats to Jeter on 2000.
I really enjoy the RedSox - Yankess rivalry. I work with alot of Yankee fans and we like to watch the games together and bust each others stones. But, it does get out of hand sometimes with some fans. I think fans are going too far when they are throwing things out on to the field. Or when a fan gets a beer poured on him/her for wearing a Yankees hat at Fenway park or vise-versa.

Its about time all RedSox fans start becoming Baseball fans, and not JUST RedSox fans!

I know your asking yourself, how can he like the Yankees and be a RedSox fan? Well,.... I am also a Patriots fan who likes the Dolphins

I enjoyed reading how some of you guys became fans. For me it started with my father. I couldnt go a day of my childhood without hearing about Mickey Mantle. My father came to America in 1957 when he was 21, and spent day after summer day from that year on sitting in the bleachers at the old stadium watching Mickey play. He would tell me endless stories of the huge shots Mantle would hit, how he could run down any ball, drop down the most beautiful drag bunt while batting lefty.

There were some amazing stories passed on to me from my best friends grandfather too. He was an old Italian guy who grew up directly across from Yankee stadium in the 20's and 30's. He would sit us down and talk to us for hours about the old days, and how Babe Ruth used to come out after a game, sign autos for the kids, buy hot dogs for the kids, play stick ball with him and his buddies, etc. It was just amazing to hear it all from someone who was there first hand.

I was only 5 when Guidry had his great year in 78, but that was the first year I can recall anything first hand. Being left handed myself, Guidry became my first Yankee hero until Mattingly came along and took over that title. I have had the pleasure of meeting both in my lifetime, Mattingly several times in fact, and he was always more than willing to spend a moment putting a smile on a young boys face.

No matter what team you root for if you are a true baseball fan it's hard to not appreciate the Yankees. If nothing else they have provided 100 years of history and legends for us all to talk about, watch, root for, against, enjoy, and remember.

I couldn't help but read this thread....philosophy....keep your friends close, keep your enemy's closer. By my Icon, I am a Red Sox fan. I’ve never live closer than 500 miles to Fenway, but my Mother was born and raised in Haverhill Mass, so I am a Red Sox fan by blood. I’ve grown to live (and almost die) with them. Keep this a secret……….(I enjoyed them coming back on the Yankees in 2004 slightly more than winning the WS).

I’ll start with this, if I had to start a team from scratch AND I had the pic of the litter, I’d take Derek Jeter. He is the epitome of a baseball player. The freaking guy does everything, I mean EVERYTHING right. There aren’t many players in baseball who make players around them better players, well, Jeter is one of those. He’d be a fit on any team. I respect him too much to hate him. Bernie is another, the Sox almost got him, but George wouldn’t have any of that, he signed him for 87 Mil. Bernie is simply full of class. And I’m sure you know, we LOVE Mariano in Boston, when was the last time you heard a Yankee getting cheered on opening day, come on ya gotta be honest, you know that was funny!!

I love a good baseball debate, no one is right, no one is wrong. Ted Williams was better than Joe D, Fisk was better than Munson, Rice was better than Jackson, Roger was better with the Sox than with the Yankees, Nomar better than Jeter (then) and the Sox will win the division this year for the first time in a decade.

So says me, for I am Red Sox fan.

My best friend who I've known since before I can remember(We went to school together from k-12) is a diehard Red Sox fan. We've been busting eachothers balls since gradeschool. I'm from MD too so needless to say we were both fans of the minorities(O's fans are the worst, even though I love going to Camden Yards). But it's awesome, and non of our sports teams are the same. So he's not only my best friend we have a hella good time one upping eachother.

Toppsco1, That friendly rivalry is a blast! My friend came out with a good one the other day. I told him where to stick his 26 world series rings and he says, " it would be hard for me to fit 26 rings up there but, you should have no problem finding room for your RedSox rings." I had to admit he burned me on that one. image

Did anyone actually stay up to watch the end of last nights game ? I got too pissed off at Farnsworth to stick around. Mariano pitched 3 innings I heard, his longest outing in 10 years.

  • ^^I didn't get to see it but wish I did. Mariano gave up 1 hit and no runs in 3 innings.

Bri-Great read from you by the way. My Mothers side came over from Ireland around 1904 and when my Mom was in High School the family moved out to NE NJ(About a 15-20 minute drive to Elizabeth, right next to New Brunswick) and my Grandpa would tell me story after story, we'd watch the Yankees play out on the porch during the summer vacations I spent up there. In fact everybody in his neighborhood(At the time, all elderly NY'ers and Garden Staters around 60-80) talked to me about the Yanks. We'd go around and help out the old widows in the neighborhood, bring them groceries and do yardwork for them. Nothing like meeting a woman as old as your grandmother who follows the Yanks more religious than anyone I've ever met in my life. In my family, your either a Yankees fan or you don't like baseball. It's that simple, in fact every Yankhater I've ever talked to(and boy theres a lot out there huh!?) 99% are fans of them; they just always root against them. Like I said, I grew up in Oriole country(The eastern shore of MD) and I remember as a youngster trying to buy Yankee cards at maybe 5-7 years old. Getting the reply "We don't carry Yankee cards here"; still makes me chuckle to this day.

I've never gotten a chance to meet a current/former Pinstriper; but if you ever see a skinny tall guy at Camden Yards with the Bosox in town wearing a Yankee cap right under the big screen...Yep thats me!
