I recently picked up this Earle Greasy Neale cut signature. Have any of you ever seen anything signed with his first name of Albert? I've talked to a few people and none of them have ever scene a signature with his first name

    image

Also, I collect the HOF Metallic cards and probably have the largest signed collection known with 170 cards signed. If anyone has any of these that are looking to trade or sell please let me know and if I need that card I'm interested. I don't think many people collect these cards because they are a pretty ugly card.

Can't say I remember ever seeing a first name cut of him ever. Then again, only been doing this for about 6 years, so there are many things I haven't seen. Hahaha. I know when I first started out I'd not even seen a full signature for quite a while...maybe 3 years into looking before I did. Very nice piece though for sure!

I keep an eye out for full name signatures, Ive seen his baseball exhibition card signed A. Earle Neale, and one signed A. "Greasey" Neale but thats the first time ive seen one signed Alfred Earle Neale. Very nice full name signature, congrats!

Hey guys. I finally just hit 268 with these two. Been watching for a cheap Ogden for a while...and finally...down to 1 Steeler HOFer to go and that would be Walt Kiesling. At least I now have a nice Johnny Blood.

  • Hey J.T.

VERY Nice pick-up on that Johnny "Blood" McNally. I was one of the underbidders. Very Nice. My guess....One year from now, you will have three more, and be down to the "Single Digits"

  • Any Notre Dame, College Hall of Fame, or All-American collectors on the site? I just picked up an autograph album (mostly a Big Ten player, coach, or AD focus) with a lot of rarities in those categories including Fred Miller, Harry Stuhldreher, Bo McMillin, and a lot more. The time frame for the album is mostly the mid-to-late 1940's. PM me or email me if you have names on your list you would like me to check or interested in any of the names I mentioned above.

    Thanks!

    I'll call you, thanks.
  • Wow, am I the only one that feels like the prices on even fairly difficult football HOF autographs (except for maybe the top 5 most rare) are just bottoming out? Tonight I saw a really nice Benny Friedman slabbed 3X5 go for $180 and a slabbed Henry Jordan check go for $75. George Allen's and Al Davis authenticated autographs sell in the $250 range. The Guy Chamberlain being offered ended up tonight at $600+, but that still is relatively cheap as I feel sure they use to sell for closer to $900-$1K. Almost makes me wish I would have waited to pick up a few of the pieces in my collection.

    Ken
  • Very disappointed - I was the runner up on that Chamberlin. I agree with you though Ken. Recently I have seen several mid range guys
(a signed Ken Strong for 15$ that went unsold. I know Ken Strong isn't exactly scarce but 15$? I should have just bought it. )
selling at reasonable prices - including several of Guy Chamberlin that have gone in the 500-600 range.
Just none I was able to get..aarrrgghh!
So if anyone has an extra Chamberlin they are looking to move...PM me!!
Also - and this is something I have NEVER done as I have always been just a collector - I am going to sell my Ray Nitschke Super Bowl I Autographed Wool Jersey if this is an item anyone here may be interested in.
I didn't realize Benny only went for 180. Seems darn reasonable ! I was focused on B. Guy...
  • I bid on the Chamberlain also. There was no way that I was going to let it go at $300-400. I already have one, but figured I could possibly trade it later or help someone else out. I even saw a George Preston Marshall sell for somewhere in the $600s within the past 6 months. Now, if I could only find the Curly Lambeau I need at maybe $1K-$1.2K then I will stop complaining about these low salesimage.

    Ken
  • There were a few on the Probstein Auction I was lookng at , but as they all went off at the same time I focused on the Chamberlin. Someone got a vey nice Benny Friedman at a good price! I know HA had several George Preston Marshall cuts and letters in one of thier recent auctions - I didn't pick up any of those either. I have been stuck on 11 for years. Alas!

I'm not sure if prices are necessarily bottoming out....it's just not a good time to be a seller. Some of the country is still struggling, and right now its close to Christmas. Don't forget...just six months ago the board was talking about the outrageous prices of the Lambeau, Lyman, Reeves, Edwards, etc on the Collect (I think it was collect) auctions website. So I don't think prices are bottoming out necessarily.

That being said I did get a gorgeous Marshall for $500 and a Fritz Pollard first name only signature for under $400. I also upgraded my Lennie Ford PC auto. Those three are currently with Jeffrey getting transformed into my custom cards that he does such a great job on. When he gets them to me in a week or so I'll post scans before they are off to PSA for this month's special. I also got Poseidon's Pudge Heffelfinger cut he put on ebay and Jeffrey already transformed that for me as well. Very happy with it for under $300 total. Will scan that at the same time I scan the other three.

And I am still planning on doing another bulk PSA/DNA blue flip submission in January. So if you have items you are thinking of sending in we get pretty good rates if you wait until I put it together. Rocke, David, Ken, Jeffrey and JT have taken part in the last few, so if you need a reference on the submission i'm sure they'd be happy to add their $.02 on it. But I've only got a handful this go round (not the 100 or so I usually have), so hitting the quantity to qualify may be harder this time.

I did Cesar. I wasn't letting a chance at a Fritz go for under $400...first name only or not.... Just glad I can say I'm down to 5 to go now.

You asked me before via email about PSA certifications/encapsulations. You should send me an email if it's something you'd want to piggyback on with part of your collection. In the past I've gotten my Reeves, Steve Owen, Len Ford, Kiesling (yes - Kiesling), Thorpe, and Lambeau done under the submission in the past. So there are lots that you can get done and ones you've asked me about in the past....it may be a good chance for you to get it done. But if you do you'll have to educate me on the best return shipping option back to Mexico....I'm guessing it'd be UPS but I'm not sure what the most secure shipping would be.

  • I know, I have even tried to do it directly with PSA. The problem is that to do that, my things will have to clear customs first in the US and then back to Mexico, so I would have to pay custom fees and taxes twice for something that is already mine, LOL!!!!
So I think that what I will have to do is to bring them with me to my next trip were I can go directly to PSA or JSA, whenever that is, LOL!!!!
It is certainly more complicated to be an autograph collector outside the US, LOL!!!!

  • I think you missed Todd Christensen also....lost a lot of greats the past 2 weeks.

  • Derrick,

You make a good point in that I could look at it as a nice time to upgrade a few pieces in my collection for cheaper than the original. I don't know about the Collect auction prices, but most any of these guys (except the rarest of the rare) if you are patient you can buy at prices that are the lowest I can remember since having this collecting focus.

    Ken
  • GRGR Posts: 550 ✭✭
Names like Thorpe, Lambeau, Lombardi will always be held in high regard while names like Driscoll, Edwards, Guyon only get the juices going of those of us who collect. The best example I can think of is when showing my pal Ryan my collection when i showed him my Art Rooney 3x5 he said that must be worth thousands! Then showed him a Tim Mara autograph I briefly owned and he asked me who that was...and his dad is a freaking Giants fan!! lol the prices will drop and rise for sure but the memorys in the hobby good and bad will always remain and thats the point of it! Also if prices are bottoming out don't tell the guy who spent $2000 on a pencil Thorpe album page at r&r auctions lol although I do agree its any times a good time to buy when you find a cheap price!
    Nathan Wagner
  • Well, I remember when I came into collecting HOF autographs back in 2007/2008, the prices on many of these guys were actually fairly low then. (Other than the ultra rare, which I had no plans of collecting at the time.) I lost a nice Benny Friedman cut inside a Donruss Classics card for like $225-250 because my phone was lagging behind and I tried to snipe it just a bit too late.

Then a few years ago, one reappeared (not sure if the same one) and it went for $500-600, maybe more. Again, this was a while ago. I almost wish I'd gotten that Friedman to upgrade mine as I still have my bowling first day cover Friedman. Hahaha. So, I think it's just a matter of prices fluctuating according to the economy and likely the holidays coming up as well are keeping people from spending near as much. Fortunately I am starting a new job, so should have a bit more money to spend. (Hopefully.)

I will admit that I am the winner of the Guy on e-bay. I wouldn't have even tried...but I just HAD to get a credit increase a few days before. Why me? lol. I am likely done for a while once I get done paying off something else I am working on paying and at this point, I'll be down to 10 (with one on my needs list is still alive and cheap.)

Glad to know that the price on the Guy was pretty good though especially since I was the one that overpaid on that Link Lyman over on Collect Auctions. I am sure we all have moments we look back and think WTF was I thinking? (I know I have MANY of those moments.) Thankfully I've kept a lot of those at bay lately and am getting into the home stretch.

And I am still very glad I picked up that George P Marshall letter a while back. That things is still a beauty (and no, Rocke...I am not trading it to you.) image
  • Nathan,

Don't get me wrong, I am not a dealer in any form so it's more of an observation than a concern. Everything that I have already purchased for my collection is a sunk cost at this pointimage. I am also not relying on my collection to be my retirement fund, hopefully most of the guys on this board are not either. It's a hobby and for enjoyment.

In terms of the $2K for a Thorpe page, I would say that there are always going to be folks who either purchase on a whim or are not as informed as we are about the current market for certain autograph pieces. I guarantee you that if anyone on this board was patient and persistent in searching, they could get a really nice Thorpe for considerably cheaper than that.

my opinion, even though I may be biased, is that if you are unquestionably the best player to ever play a position then you should no doubt be in the hall. isn't that what the hall is all about? I'm really hoping he gets his dues this year finally!!

  • Well a lot going on !
The last couple of days have brought up several relvant points - but first i would like to add my thoughts and condolences to Ace, Todd, & Mike McCormack. All 3 of these guys were great to football fans and collectors. Mike and Ace were among the first HOF'ers I wrote to when I started collecting 25 or so years ago ( Jesus ! ). They were always very accommidating and great, great players obviously. As was Todd who is usually on the initial finalist list for the HOF. Along with Kellen Winslow I think Todd helped evolve the TE position to more of a direct offensive gameplan - leading the way to a position that younger fans may take for granted was always the way it is now. It wasnt. A very nice man as well. Those Los Angelas Raiders teams were pretty great at the beginning. Ask any of us who were pissed they left Oakland in the first place !
As to the prices of many HOFers - it does seem like there are " deals" to be had lately . As a collector I have certainly paid more than some items were probably worth , but then again I am the one creating the market value on that, right? It does seem like there are more of higher end Players available lately and when put up for auction , be it HA, Lelands, Ebay, etc. they do seem to be selling lower than I would have thought. Perhaps that is more indicative of the economy overall . Another question might be why are there so many different items becoming available? Are that many collectors deciding to part with thier collections ?
If so someone give them my email sta so I can pick up a Len Ford or Guy Chamberlin !!
At any rate I don't plan on giving up my collection anytime soon so it will probably be ok. I have noticed that mid range guys - even players who still sign and are good about it are selling well and for more ,so...I just don't know
Ray Guy. Hall of Fame. Yes.
I love the conversations and debates over the years on this topic . For me the biggest oversight is Kramer1 Guy 2....and 3... up for debate. Usually Johnny Robinson.
Rocke - have a GREAT time with Ray ! Tell him it was my letter to the Hall that got him on the SR. Ballot...because it could have been !!!
Cesar - nice pickup on Fats. Congrats ! Come up for a Niner game ! And just ship your stuff to mine or Raiderguy's place and pick'em up when you come for the gameimage
J.T. - nice Chamberlin. I hate you and I'm sorry I drove the price up on you !
And to all - I hope the games all go your way tomorrow !!

Is $1300 a good price for a JSA goal line art card, or did the one just go insanely high because it had Hof 68 on it? I know most Luckman auto's are sketchy...

I communicated with the seller. He did say he would guarantee the cut if it flunked 3rd party but he wasn't going to wait around forever while it was being authenticated. He also suggested he didn't know much about PSA or JSA but I'm not sure if he was being honest.

I wanted to share my one addition to my HOF PC, 2 upgrades, and one that I've always wanted in my collection. These were cuts again done by alifaxwa2 (Jeffrey), whom I've very grateful to for taking the time to help me transform my ugly cuts into works of art. these four will be on their way to PSA to be encapsulated shortly.

First my new addition - Fritz Pollard

    image

A George Preston Marshall Upgrade from the first name only I used to have. This is a 3x5 sized card

A Lennie Ford (JT got my former PC Ford)

  • Very nice additions/upgrades. I can see why you were willing to move your old Ford now. Hahaha. Definitely a very clean piece! And that Marshall looks very nice in that card.

Definitely looking forward to adding Ford to my PC and putting me down to 10 with Culp still on my need list. (So..almost in the single digit club before the new inductees are announced.)
  • I know the Luckman is JSA certified, but I still have doubts about the autograph. Check the PSA site for Luckman exemplars. Luckman K is a separate stroke. He lifts up the pen to finish the kman. This autograph is not the wife's ghost signature. Luckman is so hard to certify. $1300 a bit high? A real Luckman autographed Goal Line so elusive. Anyone on this site willing to post a picture of your Luckman?

Thanks for the article Mike, PS. I did get the program roster, thanks. I have read that article about 100 times over the years and am still uncomfortable with spotting his signature. It is one of the most difficult ones in my opinion to authenticate.

On another note, while browsing eBay, I came across a Ray Flaherty signed HOF photo, cut in half and the person is selling both sides in separate auctions! What a shame. I am not sure if the seller did this or obtained it like that, but either way, why do people do this?
