Hope all are doing well during this holiday season. I'll be posting some fun pieces acquired the last few months. The first is this signed book from rr.
Now the item was listed as a boxing book and there are quite a few cool sigs. But that is not why i purchased it. This book includes a signature of john reed kilpatrick, who was a yale all-american end in 1909-10. He was also inducted to the college football hall of fame. Kilpatrick passed away in 1960, making his autograph pretty tough. Compounding the issue is that later in life kilpatrick was ceo of madison square garden and ran the new york rangers hockey club from 1934-1960. He was also inducted into the hockey hall of fame. The few signatures of his to reach the hobby were scooped up by hockey collectors. This one clearly went under the radar.
As some of you may know, I acquired the remaining James Timbers collection recently from the Timbers family. This collection was being auctioned off over the last several years in group lots. Fortunately there was still a great deal of quality pieces left. Here are a few of my favorite pieces.
Philip King - Princeton QB 1890-93. First Wisconsin football coach. Member of the CFHOF. Died 1938
Duke Slater - Iowa Tackle 1918-21. You guys know who he is. Should've been in the NFL HOF 40 years ago.
Edward Mahan - Harvard FB 1913-15. Jim Thorpe considered Mahan the greatest FB player of all-time. Inaugural member CFHOF. Died 1975
Clarence Herschberger - Chicago FB 1895-98. Member of the CFHOF. Died 1936.
Beautiful stuff, Mark! BTW the new book on Duke Slater is a great read. It makes you wonder why his auto is so tough since he was quite the fixture on the Chicago sports scene for so many years. Amazon link
Thanks Rev. I've thought the same thing regarding the rarity of Slater. If he makes the NFL HOF I assume more examples will surface.
I agree...Neal's book is a great read, especially his last chapter when he makes his case for Duke's induction into Canton. Plus he is a fellow autograph collector too.
Any comments on CJs latest hoard he has for sale. I see someone already "jumped" for a Wilbur Henry, Dan Reeves, Turk Edwards, and a Kiesling IC. Plenty of other hard to find HOFers - including Mara Sr, Bill Hewitt, a Steve Owen card, plus lots more if you feel like wasting a couple grand.

Chic Harley 1916-19 OSU HB. Three-time All-American and inaugural member of the CFHOF. Spent his entire adult life in a VA psychiatric hospital. I'm currently selling my OSU athletic book on ebay for those interested.
Andrew R. E. Wyant - played for Bucknell and Chicago from 1887-94. Member of the CFHOF. Died 1964
James E. Johnson - QB for Carlisle and Northwestern from 1899-1905. Member of the CFHOF. Died 1942. This is a signed postcard when he was in WW1.
T. Truxtun Hare - Penn guard from 1897-1900. 4x All-American and inaugural member of the CFHOF. Died 1956
Thanks Pup, but I all ready sold the Slater to another guy on this forum yesterday. I promised my wife years ago that I wouldn't keep doubles of things I could sell off.
To congratulate the Notre Dame fans on this forum for an undefeated season, I thought it would be neat to share the autograph of the first Notre Dame football captain - Henry Luhn.
Here is a team photo of that 1887 team, Luhn is the one seated and holding the football.
For those unfamiliar with Henry Luhn, here is an excerpt from the Notre Dame Football Encyclopedia:
"All of the touchdowns, wins, championships, and accolades that have become part of Notre Dame's storied history can be traced back to one man: Henry Luhn, the first coach, captain, and halfback at the university. In March 1887, Luhn called a meeting in Brownson Hall to start the ball rolling for a football program. Fifteen students showed up. Sure, there were obstacles: Luhn had no football, and there was no field, no uniforms, and no opponents. Two weeks later the first football arrived at the school, and the campus literary society raised money to buy white cotton uniforms, if only eleven of them....The first official contest, an 8-0 loss at home against Michigan, took place on November 23. It was the only game of the first season. From this humble beginning, Henry Luhn's enthusiasm for football would be echoed by Notre Dame players and fans for succeeding generations with an all-encompassing ardor he hardly could have imagined."
So when ND plays Alabama for the BCS championship game on Jan 7th, hoist a toast to the man who started it all for the Fighting Irish - Henry Luhn.
A Very Merry Christmas to the board ! I know some of us - ( Mark , OBVIOUSLY ) have beeen better than others ( that would be me . oops. ), but I hope Santa finds all safe and well with all ! Remember , it's not too late to start being good - or to become a Seahawks fan after last night ! I was crying into my Montana jersey by halftime! ACK!
Dug up this pretty interesting letter from Lynn Bomar - 1923 Vanderbilt All-American and member of the CFHOF. He also played two years for the New York Giants. Died 1964.
<< <i>The timbers collection is so splendid, makes you wonder what happened to Jimmy, what he grew up and did and all and if he is still alive to this day! >>
I have often wondered whatever became of him myself. I am just thankful that people like Jimmy, John Smith, John Davis, and the guy that did the white index cards with the questions, pre-printed in purple. ( Does anyone know who this guy was ? ) Collecting would be a lot more expensive for US, if it wasn't for THEM.

I acquired the remaining James Timbers collection from his son. We had a great chat about the history of this collection and James. The real autograph collector was not James, but his father Mike Timbers. Mike Timbers knew that athletes would be more receptive to an autograph request from a kid, so he used his son's name (James). James Timbers didn't even like autographs - when his dad died he sold a good portion of them in the 1980s. James' son acquired the remaining collection and had been consigning it to RR for the last 7-8 years.
Rocke - the purple printed 3x5 cards are from the John Smith collection too. That collection was acquired by Lew Lipset. He kept one of every college and pro hofer for himself and sold the rest to John Burk of Collectible Classics. Lew auctioned off his portion of the Smith collection last year.

Well, it is now OFFICIAL. I had breakfast with Rod this morning, and during our time together, I paid him the remaining balance on what I owed him for this thing of beauty. It is now, 100 % PAID FOR, and I couldn't be happier. This was one of the THREE Charles Bidwill autographs that Rod owns. He still has TWO. One in HIS collection, and ONE that is available. I am now going to start paying on his EXTRA Tim Mara autograph. It is a stunning item, that, until I have it 50 % paid for, I don't want to show it. But for now, I am thrilled to own one of the VERY few known Bidwill signatures in the public forum. As I have said many times, Rod is the smartest person I have ever met when it comes to VINTAGE NFL HOF signatures, and that includes, among others, Ron Gordon. Rod has told me that he only knows of FIVE Bidwill signatures, that are available to the public, and between him and myself, we have THREE of them. I feel VERY fortunate to now be the owner of this item.

Very beautiful pickup, Rocke. I was actually talking to someone about you over ebay...well, more he mentioned your name as I do not live far from Canton myself. Only about an hour and a half. I am far from as far along as you, but definitely would love to be able to pick up something as sweet as that piece! Definitely need to start finding someone who'll take lawaway payments on HOF autographs. lol.
Would like to go ahead and share one of my new pickups. It won't be here until Wednesday at the earliest, but figured it was worth sharing. Certainly not the most beautiful piece and I'm sure he had many more better looking autos, but I had to snag this up while I could. I am not entirely sure what I want to do with it once I get it. It's already authenticated by JSA and had PSA do a double check with a quick look and they thought it to be likely authentic. I would love to get it encapsulated somehow, but not sure how quite yet. I have talked to someone and they recommended cutting out Steve's autograph and having just that done. It does overlap one auto, but certainly not bad for a first legit Steve Owen auto (since the book I bought could not be repaired.)
On a side note...I am now sitting finally at 249...so would love to find a nice one to put me at 250 before they announce the new inductees and I reach that milestone simply by having their autograph already! If you have something and are willing to help a fellow collector out, let me know! I'm sure I've got a few things I can sell to pay for something nice.
Nice pickup for the both of you, however I already knew about Rocke's for quite some time but it is a beauty! I'm down to needing 13 at the present time. I'd be thrilled to be able to pick up at least one new one for 2013 but I'm praying to pick up two.
I want to wish the board and all of my friends a Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year!
WOW That is one great item Rocke. Congrats. I agree with you about Rod. I had the pleasure of meeting him for the first time at the National in Chicago a couple of years ago. We only talked for a few minutes but it was fun to listen to some his collecting stories.
Congrats wju2004 on your Steve Owen pickup.
Mark, thanks for sharing about the Timbers collection. I also have wondered how this collection was put together. Mike must have had a daughter named Mary because some of the autographs that I got from RR were signed to her. I wonder how the players would have felt about that if they ever found out that Mike was using his son and daughter to get autographs??
Greg, sorry for the shipping problem you had. That is awful!
Rocke- great pick-up. That Bidwell is really nice. I am not one to get things slabbed very often (my first large order was with Derrick), but you should think of doing that with the Bidwell, psa/dna - at the very least, it will protect it and keep it clean.
The Timbers collection must have been fun to put together. I wonder how he found all the addresses back then? I would assume he wrote to the school and they would forward to the player or coach. I know people who think the 1960's was a great time for writing to players. Imagine the 1930's-1940's and earlier.
I added a small section to my website that I though some here might find interesting.
Great to hear from you. Mike Timbers got the addresses of athletes from his job....he was a Wisconsin mail carrier! He would spend his evenings writing letters (from "James") and mail them while working. That is why the bulk of the collection contained Wisconsin and Green Bay players/coaches. I think you are right about the others though...he must have written to alumni associations or universities to get the rest. However I'm sure he had connections at different post offices across the country to help.
If anyone is interested, I have a few auctions ending tonight including a Wayne Millner signed envelope (postmarked 4 days before his death), a signed 1955 Topps All American Ace Parker RC PSA/DNA, a Leon Hart letter to Pete Rozelle concerning the NFL Pension Plan, and a 1951 Bowman Eddie Price signed card D. 1979.
Also in a couple days I have my 2002 SP Legendary Cuts Arnie Herber PSA 10 (pop 1) Autograph ending. For those of you working on the registry set, you know how difficult this card is to land!
Thanks! Please feel free to email me with any questions! You can view auctions by clicking the link below:
The Timbers collection is just great! Thanks for sharing Mark....pickup of the year?? Maybe, but I haven't forgotten about that Jim Thorpe signed ''Fabulous Redmen'' either. Jim - GREAT addition to the site ! Does anyone remember how we all got along without the information resources we have today - not the least of which is each other ? Rocke - definitely the pickup of this year so far !! That is awesome ! ( and only the 2nd Bidwell I've seen ) and a FB request your way.. Greg - Ugh. Just.....ugh. Very sorry. I have nothing new to add for your viewing pleasure, so will live vicariously through Mark for a while
Yeah i bid 250 then went on my way to York to submit my stuff to jsa and figured I could use my phone if needed..., then had my phone run out of batery in the last few minutes of the auction....should have put a higher max bid
Well it looks like you and I are were the 2 losers because only 3 folks bid on it. Not sure why though. I would think an authenticated Smith would go for at least $1K.
Jim- I viewed the new addition to your site last night - Found it very thoughtful and well put togethe!. Also probably the only reel anyone made like that. Fulll disclosure - I didn't have my speakers on so I can't comment on any background score, The fact that many of these guys had little photographic history to work with and that in some cases you had playing days/ post playing days photos and everything was set up uniformally made for a very thoughtful tribute. Did you not " window " the names / stats over the pics to keep it cleaner? Well done !! ( oh, and I want a shirt ) On a lighter note: HOF election is very nearly on us again - glad I got all those guys ! And I'm sure Rocke is pulling hard for Modell !! Tha's a little joke. You have to despise Art Modell if you live in Ohio, right? Going to go post a new avatar pic of me " Kaeper-nicking" now that thats a thing ! Kid grew up 10 minutes away from me - hard not to be a little pleased right now !!
Obviously a labor of love - which I enjoyed. I've done a couple of similar things and I've always ended up making them shorter than where I started - so I think an edit to move it along would be good - Thanks Mike
Very nicely done! Great photographs and I like the old movie reel format. Criticism - I'd consider changing the music to something upbeat and increase the timing. I'd also try to throw in occasional action shots. I felt like I was watching a funeral slide show - but maybe that was your goal?
Thanks for sharing. The work you do is absolutely fantastic. I'm certain the families really appreciate it too.
Well gang – by far my best mailday to date. I recently purchased a lot of 16 cut autographs from the 1947 Packers. It included a Curly Lambeau auto, and 15 others. I paid what an uncertified Lambeau would go for, and was hoping to sell the other 15 cuts to pay for the $100 PSA/DNA encapsulation fee. What I ended up receiving almost made me pass out!! So I open the package, and the Lambeau is on top:
Looks good, and then it got interesting. I’m scrolling through, and about three cuts after the Lambeau this pops out. I had to do some checking with Mark (thanks Mark!!) to make sure it was who/what I thought it was, and at this point I’m thinking to myself – Sweet; I just got myself a free Lambeau auto for my PC!!
Then – I start scrolling through the rest of the cuts. I hit the second to last cut and stop dead in my tracks. I sit and stare thinking there’s no way I’m seeing what I think I am. But after staring for a bit I’m really pumped up with this one, and am able to add the 5th hardest HOFer to my collection:
So the day after I get these cuts, they are off to PSA/DNA. Only I wasn’t including the $100 Lambeau fee, I also included a $150 Bruce Smith fee, as well as a $75 Kiesling fee (Not sure why Kiesling is cheaper than Lambeau….). When all is said and done – after selling the Smith (based on Mark’s estimate), the other cuts in the lot, and including the 3 authentication fees I will have roughly $100-200 invested into BOTH a Lambeau and Kiesling for my PC. To knock off a Lambeau and the 5th Hardest HOFer to find all in one shot at a price I can handle is something that I’ll never be lucky enough to see again. But glad I was able to get lucky this time!!
Other cuts in the bunch were (All Are SOLD): Don Wells Tiny Croft Ken Keuper Paul Lipscomb Bob Skoglund Bob Forte (Packer HOF) Tony Canadeo (HOF) Larry Craig (Packer HOF) Herm Rohrig Ted Fritsch (Packer HOF) Dick WIldung (Packer/College HOF) Ed Neal Don Hutson (HOF)

I wish I would have know about your cast offs before you sold them.
As most know I am mainly focused on the HOF auto'd card set. I am half way to accuring the last key card. At which point I will be in the category of waiting for an potential cut cards to come out for tose that I am missing, as in all likelihood it is nearly impossible to find an auto'd card of those that I am missing. I might jus have to go to regular or cut autos for the time being. It's just too bad that PSA will not grade both a card and the auto together. If so, it would have made my "set registry" life easier.
As always, I am on the look out for Packer autos just like many others on here. So if anyone has any they are looking to sell please let's us know. I don't think many on here look down at letting others know what may be out there for sale.

Very sorry.
I have nothing new to add for your viewing pleasure, so will live vicariously through Mark for a while
Bruce Smith Autograph

Well it looks like you and I are were the 2 losers because only 3 folks bid on it. Not sure why though. I would think an authenticated Smith would go for at least $1K.

When you get a chance, take a look at the video I made. I need some feedback on it. Don't worry about hurting my feelings, I need an honest opinion.
Thanks,
Jim

I viewed the new addition to your site last night - Found it very thoughtful and well put togethe!.
( oh, and I want a shirt )
On a lighter note: HOF election is very nearly on us again - glad I got all those guys !

Other cuts in the bunch were (All Are SOLD):
Don Wells
Tiny Croft
Ken Keuper
Paul Lipscomb
Bob Skoglund

Tony Canadeo (HOF)
Larry Craig (Packer HOF)
