<< <i>I normally don't tout other peoples auctions, but I would recommend checking out Reese's 97 Legends autos. With the black trim and edges it is difficult to get hi grades on these cards. Also, factor in the these cards were PSA/DNA graded. That translates to grading fees being $15 per card ($10 if you were able to get in on any of the group bulk submissions). Plus the fact that this set is a landmark set when it comes to autograph football, and these cards are a bargain at the opening bid levels. >>

    Thanks Frank!

Your 1997 Legends is truely amazing! It's probably one of my favorite autograph sets, but I decided to put these up since I have been able to replace all the signatures in my set with signed rookie cards. I set the opening bids low so hopefully someone needing them for there registry set can get them.

    Reese,

A few of those guys still sign TTM - off the top of my head Bill Walsh, Charley Trippi, Art Weiner, Dub Jones, Lujack, Tittle, Tripucka and Morrison still sign - with pretty good signatures.

Your Request for Item "1955 Bowman Len Ford Signed Card", eBay Lot No. "140688641614", opinion was rendered at "1/25/2012 8:55:23 PM" and the result was:

    Response: "Likely Genuine"

looks like someone else must have done this one already yesterday. that would explain the fast response.

I compared against my 3 exemplars and I agree w/ the likely genuine opinion. It appears the card was signed in a hurry - likely at the stadium before or after a game. If you look at some of the other signed cards the seller has for sale, many appear to have also been signed in a hurry (e.g. Tunnell signed cards).

I'm looking forward to watching the bidding war from the sidelines...

Does anyone know who is next to Nitschke in this photo? Also, who is the Vikings guy? I was going through some things and found this in an album. It hasn't seen the light of day for a long time. Boy were we spoiled years ago when we could write guys like this and get such a great reply! I guess we kind of took it for granted that they would be around for a long time.

Hey Guys - Some opinions on this. I was lucky to find it and was curious if you thought it was legit or not. It looks spot on to me, but I'm horrible at determining authenticity.....

  • So this is cool....there I was browsing ebay, as we have all been one to do, and I came across this listing from Albersheim selling a Fats Henry GPC with a Buy It Now price of 5$.
    So I bought it!
Can't have too many Fats Henry sigs that's for sure.
Only .... I got this email:

    "Dear Sir/Madam:

I'm sorry there was an error in the list price. It was supposed to list on ebay for $5995 or best offer. I'm going to send a request to cancel the transaction and refund your money.

Again, I apologize for the inconvenience. I would buy these all day at $5. In fact, I think the COA costs $100 from PSA.

Thanks for your understanding in the situation"

    Honestly, " Dear Sir/Madam" ?
My name was right there on the Paypal invoice I immediately sent, lol !

  • << <i>Len Ford you are mine!!!! >>

Congratulations, Reese. As far as your win, I, like probably some others on this thread, list people by their Ebay names when they win higher end type football autographs in my "saved favorite sellers" list on Ebay, so I know if they are bidding on an item, or so I know right away if they win an item. I don't have ANY of the underbidders from the Len Ford on my list.
As far as the Kiesling, I did bid four times, on two different Ebay accounts. My top bid was $1,011.99. I didn't expect to win, but you never know right ??? Three examples, in the last 30 hours, I won a Bronko Nagurski 3 X 5 card for $49.95 and A George Halas 3 X 5 card for $75.00...and they are BOTH BEAUTIES. Then, earlier today, I picked up a little autographed hardcover book that has the title "Run To Daylight" signed in what looks to be black fountain pen ( though it may be black ballpoint ) by some guy named Vince Lombardi. I think I got it a VERY nice price of $306.11 I am VERY happy about it. Seller told me he would refund the 306 if it fails JSA or PSA, so how can I lose ?
Again, Reese, congrats, not only for winning the Ford, but for selling that dinner program.

Hey Jay, ( and anyone else that's interested )
Jane is having Jack Butler at her monthly cardshow/autograph session in Feb. The date will be Feb. 26th. She doesn't have it on her website yet. She had to wait until the vote. She was already committed to having him, but Jack's pricing was going to be obviously a bit more if he was elected, than if he was not elected. Sure it will be on her website this week. If anyone wants to mail me anything, I will personally get them done for you at the show, make sure they are done with a new pen, and will take pictures of jack signing. Greg will vouch for the job I did for him during HOF week a couple of years ago. Let me know.

I will vouch for Rocke any time! I am really shocked and disappointed that Dick Stanfel wasn't elected to the HOF yesterday. I think the HOF voters missed an opportunity to recongnize one of the best lineman of the 50's.

That was a nice tidy auction. Though I didn't bid on anything it was fun to watch and hope some of you picked up something you needed !
Rocke, what is Jane's web site? I think I would be interested in that.
    On a personal note:
First, I have no problem with anyone elected yesterday- all deserving , some suprising. I think every finalist was, and is, deserving ( Maybe most more than a couple ).
But does anyone else have a problem with Dick Stanfel not going in, or the way the Senior Commitee formats its nominees ?
Personally I feel that Stanfel- who has been a finalist before - and now again not being elected is insulting. This is a 70-80 year old man whose obviously great playing days are long behind him. I never saw Stanfel play, has anyone here ? To bring him again into this spotlight of honor and recognition only to be told
" Sorry, Dick" has to be crushing . Even on the chance he may not care there are those in his life who do.
    Just don't nominate him.
We all can name 15-20 guys we feel belong in the HOF as Senior Nominees. These are also players who were deprived of an opportunity to be considered, and quite possibly selected.
The HOF may be better served by just selecting Senior Inductees, like MLB does. Get in a room , have a discussion, select one or two ( or a few! ) and make an announcement that these men will be joining the class of 20-- . Become a little more proactive towards those who helped open your front doors everyday.
I know Cris Carter , Reed, Bettis..etc are disappointed, but we're all pretty sure they won't be 70-80 years old sitting and waiting for thier name to be called50 YEARS later. If you were good enough to be nominated as a SR just decide they were good enough to be inducted.
    Ridiculous. Sameful.

I know Cris Carter , Reed, Bettis..etc are disappointed, but we're all pretty sure they won't be 70-80 years old sitting and waiting for thier name to be called50 YEARS later. If you were good enough to be nominated as a SR just decide they were good enough to be inducted.

I know I'll be in the minority, and it's great to remember players of yesteryear. But I disagree with the whole senior nominees to begin with. If the voters of the timeframe who saw these players play their entire careers couldn't vote them in, what right does the voters of today have to vote them in? I just don't understand that concept.

  • But Raiderguy, if Ray guy was selected for induction next year wouldn't you think " About time ! " ? ( I would )
I wouldn't take anyone out of the HOF to put someone in...but I think there are many men overdue and deserving and there should be an avenue other than a 15 year period of eligibility and then that's all. Especially with more teams , players , and changes in the game ( and the God Almighty statistic !! ) seemingly diminishing contributions of those of a different era. If they even had them....O line....
Maybe there can be a better avenue to assess this criteria other than those who vote on the more current nominees......
    Rev? Up to the task?

Actually, I wouldn't (regarding Guy). LIke I said - if voters of the timeframe who saw every single season of the player's career didn't vote them in, why all of a sudden are the pushed into the spotlight in front of voters who never saw them play one single game probably. And it pushes the Cris Carters, Tim Browns, and Andre Reeds out - and that isn't right. Carter/Brown were 2/3 in every single receiving category available when the retired. Now with inflated passing stats it wouldn't surprise me to see Brown never get in - and that's not right. Brown even has punt return records that stand to this day. I just don't agree with the whole setup. Again, there are plenty of guys from long ago who probably deserve to be in. But if the voters of that time couldn't vote them in, what right do we have to push derserving guys of today out to have the voters consider players who they never even saw play in a game?

i agree. its like baseball HOF putting in ron santo now. i mean how many times did he have the chance and then was voted in by some golden SR group. i can understand that you need to give some guys some extra shots, more so the players that played prior to the HOF. many were looked over for the absolute greats and then ran into the current greats from the 50's, 60's and 70's. however, i do see some role for a SR election still. oline and safety are two positions that tend to be over looked as the stats they produce really arent there to stand out. but i think they should cut it down to one SR candidate per year with an additional spot for coach/GM/contributor.

And maybe it's because I am 28 years old and I myself haven't seen them play. But if 40 years from now Tim Brown gets elected as a Sr nominee - then maybe I'll understand more. It's just my current mindset doesn't get it. But at the same time, even 40 years from now, if Brown wasn't selected by these committee members who saw his whole career I don't understand how my son or grandson should have the right to say yes to him 40 years from now.

And I'll be the first to also say that I was extremely disappointed in this year's class. When I grew up, I viewed the HOF as this elite class of members that was almost God-like. Names like Jim Thorpe, Lombardi, Unitas....the names you associate football with. I do not see how a Chris Doleman or Cortez Kennedy gets in over a Cris Carter (and mind you I am the biggest Viking hater in the world - bar none) or a Charles Haley. Curtis Martin was not worthy of a 1st ballot HOF either IMO. Yes the 10 straight 1,000 yard seasons to start a career is amazing, and he definately deserves to be in (just not a 1st balloter). Never once in watching Martin in his career do I remember anyone saying we need to devise a gameplan to stop Curtis Martin to seal a victory. He just wasn't that type of back. But he's a great individual and again I do think he is Hall worthy. But he's not 1st ballot Jerry Rice type good.

There will always be a backlog of Senior Candidates who should be inducted into the HOF. Dont' forget, there was a gap of 43 years between the first season of the NFL and when the HOF was opened. I think that players in the 50's and 60's were impacted the most because many were overlooked in their first years of eligibility as the HOF was trying to elect the backlog during the first decade of the HOF's existence (many who played during the 20's, 30's and 40's) and the HOF selection committee has never caught up.

IMO, the HOF should have had a special election to enshrine all of the deserving senior candidates and then moved forward to keep pace with current candidates as they became eligible. A good analogy is when the baseball HOF elected a slew of negro leaguers several years ago....

  • In my humble opinion the Hall of Fame should serve a couple of purposes - in part it's pure PR for the NFL and that's fine, but it should also increase fans appreciation of the game and understanding of the game's history. I think the Baseball HOF has done a better job in shining light on the less well known historical aspects of the game. Take a guy like Ed Thorp - how many fans know who he is, and yet for 35 years the NFL named their championship trophy in his memory. And throw a few crumbs to the old timers while they are still alive - don't let somebody like Glenn Presnell go to his grave without a nod. I think what happened to Benny Friedman is a case study of the problems of the Hall of Fame selection process and why it's important to go back and rethink some players who were not selected when they first became eligible.

I'll make post #4000 in agreement. Why not just have one big committee to evaluate players from each decade/era and then put in a bunch and then seal it? Yes, there are still a number of fine players from the 40's and 50's who are deserving. Two spots doesn't allow many to get in each year. How can these guys go up against "Seniors" that played in the 80's?
