Official NFL HOF autograph set thread???

  • Hey All-

I'm relatively new here haven't been on much but I read a lot.

Thought I would finally get around to posting. Looks like a good forum here and figured I'd post what I''m looking for. I am trying toget all the Packers in the HOF, and I am basically down to Curly other than possibly upgrading.

I have a Jordan signed check, that I'd like to flip over to a 3x5 at some point if I find a dandy. My Hutson is goregous with a "Green Bay Packers" inscription, but signed in black. It looks great, but I would prefer blue.

I have an extra Hinkle 3x5, Hutson RGA card, slabbed Nitschke 3x5, slabbed Canadeo 3x5, Favre Star pics certified auto RC (signed on front), Ringo GLAC, and possibly a few extra assorted items like 8x10's that I would consider trading.

I am VERY selective when it comes to what I collect or will take in a trade - doesn't mean I am not willing to make a deal, but I am picky.

Also, just to throw it out there, if someone sees some stuff at auction and especially if it is part of a lot, let me know and we could work out a deal to split it in the end.

    A few questions...

    1) What auction houses would you recommend based on what I'm looking for? I find it difficult to be tracking all these various auction houses, but if they have what I want, then I might need to do that more...

    2) Is ther any protocol for offering items for trade/sale?

    3) How do I post pictures? Just use the "attach files" function, or is there a better way?

    4) I don't collect much in terms of cards, other than some GLAC's...maybe this is the wrong thread?

    Thanks!

Got this in the mail today. The Glassgow from the lot was sold to a good buddy.

Joel - welcome to the forum. There are a few Packer collectors here on this forum who would be glad to help you. Sounds like you have a great collection all ready. Here are the answers to your questions.

    1. RRauction and Heritage are two auction houses which seem to carry a lot of Packer items.
    2. No protocol for sale/trade - this forum was originally created by Rocke ( I think) for NFL HOF autographs and has morphed into a forum for all types of football autographs (with a vintage slant)
    3. Best way to post photos is through "Photobucket" website. Use the link option to post on this forum.
    4. There are other forums for sports cards.

    All the best

Nice Mark! So, by my count, that is the 3rd Duke Slater autograph I have seen. Rev Mike has one and the other, very famous one is on a red leaf with Nike Kinnick. Does anyone know of any others? Also, Greg started the thread 6 years ago today!

    Joel,

Welcome to the group from another fellow Packer Fan!! Nearly all of my autos are on cards, even my Lambeau!! Its a cut auto card. I do however have other Packer autos on other media. I am in the process of working on a obtaining auto's of all players that have scored for the Packers. Thats quite a challenge.

As for your questions...#1, that is hard really other than just searching them all...to be honest i generally stick with ebay. much easier to search and less time. though I am sure people on here would keep you informed about auctions on other sites. #2, not much protocol just list your stuff you have to trade and what you are looking for. btw, there are a bunch of Packer fans on these boards. #3, Up under the message text: there is the B, I, U, next button is for images. #4, this isnt the wrong thread. we have many here that dont do much of the auto'd cards. the main thing is we all love football, the HOF and autos of nearly any football player.

  • Mark, Great pickup on the Duke Slater. I would have loved to have seen the collection that came out of all together before they started to break it up. They all came from the same collector, Jimmy Timmers. He just happened to live in Wisconsin. He seemed to collect all players, coaches from the pro's to college. It seems like he started collecting autographs in the early 1930's and continued until the 1960's. I happened to get lucky and win the last two Green Bay Packers lots from R & R that came from that same collection.

After doing some research I do not understand why Lavern "Lavvie" Dilweg is not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Joel, Welcome to the forum. You have come to the correct thread if you want to learn about and discuss vintage football autographs because the collectors on here have tons of knowledge from Pro to college and everything in between. With the number of auction houses in business and don't forget eBay, you have to keep track and follow most all of them to really stay on top of the rare and hard to find autographs. You never know when lets say "Memory Lane" auction house lists some great and hard to find football autographs.

I also do not collect autographed football cards. I focus mainly on 3 X 5's, photos and letters of Green Bay Packer players as well as Pro Football Hall of Fame members. From what you described in your post, you have a start to a great collection. I hope you will share some photos of your collection on the forum in the future.

Joel if you have questions do not hesitate to ask anyone on this thread. As long as you continue collecting you never stop learning something new!

Thanks guys for the kind words. I was pretty excited to finally obtain Slater for my collection. Of the five Slater sigs I know of this one is the earliest, signed one month after his final game in 1931.

I agree Ed...The Jimmy Timbers collection was amazing. RR has been selling it off over the last several years. Would have been nice to see it before they broke it up.

Hope everyone has a great holiday season.

I have a huge addition to my HOF auto collection that I would like to share with everyone. This card has been one of my white whales, which quite frankly I never thought that I would own. It came with a full LOA from JSA and is signed beautifully in ball point pen.

1952 Bowman Small signed Steve Owen:

  • I'm glad to see so many of my fellow board members have been so good this year ! Santa has duly rewarded many of us !
    Beautiful Slater - really nice
Beautiful Owen - really nice ( and on a Bowman as well ! )
    Beautiful Thorpe - really nice
And the good Rev has a wonderful photo of his Dad to add to the family album, maybe the nicest pickup of the year!
For me it was easily a Pitchin' Paul Christman slabbed cut....Thanks again Ken !
God Bless Us, Every One....and Merry Christmas to all !

    Greg,

I'll tuck it away. I only have two autographs on display.....a framed 1893 Princeton football team signed banquet program with original photos of each member of the starting eleven (which I've posted scans of on this forum) and a large signed photo of Mickey Mantle, personalized to me. The rest of my collection is in books.

There is someone on this forum with a signed Slater photo....hopefully we can convince him to post a scan. I'd love to see that piece!

Very nice Steve Owen signed card.

    All the best

  • Puppeluv/Chris - Your welcome on the Christman!

My pickup of the year was a Wilbur Pete Henry signed check. Will put up a scan as soon as I stop working 14-16 hour daysimage. Hoping in 2012 to add a Lambeau to my collection. Glad to hear that everyone had an incredible year collecting!

  • I think this link should take you to most of my Packers in the Pro Football HOF collection...

I first wanted to get individually signed NFL game balls by as many as possible - I think it ended up to be 13. Some guys like Hutson I've never seen a signed football from, and I am very specific - NFL game ball, silver paint pen.

Then I would go for 3x5's, unlined signed in blue ball point. For Lombardi I only wanted a team check or contract and looked for many years before coming across the one I got - signed just after he was hired - it's a yellow team check (as opposed to the more common payroll check), and made out the the NFL...perhaps a for a league fee?

I picked up the McNally and Herber this year from the same guy (Roderick Winzinek) and they are really high grade examples with inscriptions.

Now I'm just waiting for a Lambeau and maybe I'll retire...LOL

    Anyway, enjoy!

Very nice collection Joel. Hopefully you can pick up a Lambeau this year. He comes up frequently for auction on Heritage and Leland's.

Great Lyman from the John Smith collection. Pretty cool wife to help you out with your collection too. My wife hates the hobby....but when I sell a piece for a nice profit she is all smiles and off to the mall.

    Merry Christmas everyone.

  • Wow.....Where to begin ????
First of all, Welcome the the forum Joel. Very Nice Packer collection you have going. No need to apologize about being picky about the quality of your collection. This is NOT a cheap, or inexpensive hobby. I know I am picky as well, and I DON'T apologize for it. I don't know if you have went back and read this thread from the beginning or not, but if you haven't, I would STRONGLY suggest that you do. You will learn a LOT, and there are hundreds of AWESOME looking autographs to look at. I have mentioned in the past that Rod Winzinek is a very good friend of mine, that he has helped me IMMENSELY with my collection ( my Bill Hewitt 3 x 5 card, my Len Ford 1956 Cleveland Browns contract, my Jim Thorpe signed "Jim thorpe Supper Club and Casino" business card, and one other that I haven't really talked about on here yet ) and that Rod has the absolute most incredible collection I have ever seen, or even heard of.
Mark...Truly an AWESOME pick-up with the Slater. Send me a PM or something, Do you have an idea how much you want for the Harder? Let me know. And thanks much for the credit, but as Jim rightly pointed out, Greg started this thread, I just kind of stumbled onto it almost four years ago.
Greg.... Real nice pick-up on the Owen. Very NICE Quality signature.
Ken.....I forgot about you picking up the Henry check. Didn't you win that from Rod as well ?
Dave.... Nice Christmas present from Jayne. Wish Sue would follow suit with that move....who am I kidding. No Chance. I know what you mean Mark, when I have a good day when I set-up at one of Jane's shows, when I don't drive, or if I have a nice win at poker, she wants a BIG slice of the pie as well, only she usually shops online and not at the mall.
My "pick-up of the year" .....after I get it 1/2 paid for, I will send a scan to someone to post for me. It is pretty Awesome.
Hope everyone had a GREAT CHRISTmas, and has a GREAT 2012. Also, hope 1 or 2 of you make it to Canton sometime this year. Let me know ahead of time and we'll get together.

I have just seen on Ebay, there are a number of autographs for sale. With the autograph, you get a Goal Line Art "GOLD" card. The cards are numbered 2/100.
As you have probably guessed, I did NOT already have 2/100 crossed off of my list. We now know ,for a FACT that 49 sets have been broken up, + the one set that the Hall kept for themselves, now there are, AT MOST, 50 complete sets left intact that is out in the public. That is the first # I have crossed off of my list in about TWO YEARS. image

  • Rocke -

Thanks for the kind words and encouragement. This is a fun hobby and it brings out the "hunter & gatherer" instincts in all of us.

I saw your last remarks about the GLAC gold set... And obviously you have one of them, and I've got a few questions since I wasn't around when they came out originally...

    1. Did they come out a series at a time, or did you buy the first 6 series at once?
    2. What did the initial gold set cost and do you have the opportunity to buy them with each new class? How is the price going forward?
    3. Are the set owners registered with the hall (so they know who can buy the new ones each year?)
    4. Has anyone sold a full gold set recently intact and with rights to updates?
    5. I've heard stories of some where not all gold cards were signed, or only certain ones...any info on those oddities?

I've got around 90 signed but I may give them up. They are by far the best item possible produced for or on behalf of any of the Halls of Fame across sports - great artwork, quality printing, easy to carry, and cardboard and they take an autograph perfectly. Plus they count as cards at most autograph signings which keeps the cost a little lower, but I have a hard time paying so much for a emmit smith or even joe Montana on a card...just my opinion...

    Joel

  • Hey Joel, I will do my best to answer your questions in the same #'d order that you asked them.
#1) When they originally came out, they included the first six series, but they sold EXTREMELY slowly for a couple of years. After the first six series, as a new class was inducted, they were ALSO included in the original price, at NO additional charge. The first six series included all enshrinees, up to, and including, 1994. I put my set on layaway at the Hall, I believe, in 1999. I did not pay it off until 2005. My set included ALL of the update sets, from 1995, up to, and including 2003. After I paid off that, then I had to buy the 2004, and 2005 update sets, to get caught up to date.

#2) The initial set cost $4,000.00 + tax. ( I think it was like $4,207.00 ). When about 80 sets were gone, and about 20 left, they raised the price to $4,800.00 + tax. Yes, as a set holder, you automatically have the right to buy the update set, with the same corresponding # of you original set. I never know from year to year, what the update set will cost. If I remember correctly, ( all of my receipts are in my Bank safe deposit box, which is where my "GOLD" set is as well ) the cheapest update set was $200.00. (2005) The most expensive update set was $400.00 (2010). The 2011 update is $300.00. All of the update sets also have tax added on.

#3) Yes, the sets ARE registered with the Hall. They send out letters to set owners, telling them what the update price will be, and when the $ is due by. If you don't buy your update set, the Hall has a waiting list, approx. one mile long, of people that want to buy update sets.

#4) I have seen TWO sets sell recently, that did NOT include a Fortmann OR a Wojciechowicz, and they sold for just about $15,000.00 each.

#5) I only know of TWO oddities involving GOLD cards, John Riggins and Mike Webster. John Riggins was the ONLY LIVING Hall of Famer that did NOT sign any of his 100 cards. He WILL sign them at shows for a mere $125.00 however. All other living Hall of Famers signed ALL 100 of their cards, EXCEPT for Mike Webster. I don't know EXACTLY how many Mike didn't sign, but according to Judy ( former Hall of Fame Gift shop manager ) Mike signed "about" 80 Gold cards, but she wasn't exactly sure what the Number was.

Yes, by the way, I am the proud owner of set # 16/100.

Any other questions, just ask !!!

  • Hi All...

I'm a friend of Rocke's and a fellow autograph collector... I've been reading this awesome thread for a few years but have never posted a message. I've been collecting Football HOFer autos for about 4 years; I need 70+ sigs (about half living and half deceased) to complete my set. I'm looking to purchase some of the sigs I need from other collectors who are wanting to sell their extras.

I'm picky about condition and content..not really into signed "gum" cards; preferring photos, programs, unlined index cards and unique items.

Currently looking for: Clarke Hinkle, Ernie Nevers, Henry Jordan, George Trafton, Em Tunnell and Jack Christiansen

    Thanks Much..

    greg,

nice work on finally landing the owens you have been after!!! if only i could find a revees or ford signed card out there somewhere, i would be pretty save from you for awhile. i have been quite disappointed lately with the cut auto cards of older HOFers that have been released. nothing too new out there to get me going after them. any news from PSA on the leaf cut question. for some reason i think that is going to be the only way we ever get this set any where near complete.

    to everyone else,

i have loved keeping up with your new additions to each of your collections this year. congrats in deed. clearly i am jealous of those packer autos that have found new homes. if anyone that has extras of those that they would like to part with let me know. i am in the process of working on getting autos of all packers that have scored a point for the team in its history. i was hoping to get close to a nice number by the time the team turns 100 in the near future. overall this year has been pretty slow for me on the autograph front. mainly as for HOFers i am focused on the cards. so other than keeping up with each years new inductees there are slim pickings for me most years.

other than the wish for PSA to include the custom leaf cut auto cards in the set, i would love to see PSA start grading both the cards and the autos. they can grade a ball and the auto but not a card and auto?? beckett does it and i am sure PSA could find a way to make room on the flip for another number. it could even be something like 10/10.

good luck to everyone in 2012 in all areas of life not just collecting. i wish all of you a healthy, happy and safe new year.

  • << <i>Went to PittsPuke today to the J.Paul show. Pretty good attandance for a Sunday. Gave a couple of items to JSA to get slabbed/authenticated, including a nice George Allen that I picked up. A "girlfriend" of mine Camille, ( she is a friend , that is also a girl ) that lives in Massillon was over there and made a few VERY nice pick-ups. A George Halas signed letter, on Bears letterhead, that was sent to ( I forget the guys name ) but he was the owner of I think, the Providence Steamroller. She got that from Phil Marks. Also picked a few other items from him. Then later, she boiught a nice 3 x 5 card that was signed by 5 or 6 "old-time" quarterbacks" one of which was Benny Friedman. Bought that from John Burk. This was the first time that I have ever had the pleasure of meeting/dealing with John. I look forward to seeing him again. Bart, you Rod and I are going to have to get over there to see him sometime this summer. I told him that you and Mark B. said hello. I previously mentioned Camille, because she has been a reader of this thread for a while now, and she just got signed up on this site. Please welcome her when she begins posting. She collects on a variety of items including gum cards, Goal Line Art cards, mini helmets, and 3 x 5 cards. Her collection is starting to get from the mediocre area to the advanced area. I think it will be nice to have a female contributor to this thread. All in all, a nice show.

She may still need about 70, but If everyone on this thread took 500 guesses of who she needs, NO one would be even close. Most people that need 70, still need Friedman, but probably No one other than Camille that needs 70 has TWO of the top ten, one of which is a top FIVE toughest. Hopefully , she will learn to post pictures, then she can teach me in person. I am very happy that I have helped her with her collection to this point, but even happier that she will now have all of you to help her even more.

Did Hickerson sign his cards? I saw a few on eBay but I don't think they were gold and they were only signed "Gene".

What was the deal with Fortmann OR a Wojciechowicz?

<< <i>Hey Joel, I will do my best to answer your questions in the same #'d order that you asked them.

    Hey Joel,

Yea, I guess there ARE THREE anomoly's with GLA cards, Fortmann, Wojie, and Hickerson. I admit, when I wrote that post answering your questions about GLA cards, I forgot about Gene. Anyway, here is the story on those three.

Hickerson, By the time Gene was inducted, he was already pretty deep into alzheimer's/ dementia. The last autograph session he did was a couple of months BEFORE his election. It was at a local show, up in Middleburgh Heights, Ohio. Just Southwest of downtown Cleveland. Nearly all of the Hall of Fame mini-helmets that you see today ( which are VERY few, were signed at that show. Since he was still a couple of months away from being elected, there were no Goal Line Art cards. At the show, they had about an 11 x 14 sign with H-I-C-K-E-R-S-O-N spelled out so Gene could look at it while he signed his name. By the time he was elected, he could only sign "GENE" I don't know how true it is, but according to Mike Hattely of "TOUCHDOWN TREASURES" there are fewer than 50 GENE GLA cards that have passed PSA/DNA. Very well could be true, but I am not sure of the exact number. I do have one of them, but I did NOT have it slabbed, only authenticated. I had an extra, but sold it last HOF weekend at the local show at Belden Village Mall for $500.00 Gene did NOT sign any of his "GOLD" cards, and to the best of my knowledge, did NOT sign any of his blue "PROOF" cards either. I have heard a rumor that PSA has PASSED two or three "GENE HICHERSON" signed cards, but I have never seen one myself, nor have I talked to anyone who has actually seen one, so, it may be just that....a rumor.

Alex Wojciechowicz. Probably the biggest, best, most well known, and well respected autograph dealer in the country is a guy by the name of Ron Gordon from New Mexico. Ron and Jim Mazziatti (sp ? ) the OWNER of Goal Line Art INC. are good friends. Alex is in series 4, which was set to debut during Hall of Fame weekend of 1992. Well, Ron was able to secure some cards, from Jim, a few weeks BEFORE HOF weekend. Ron did TWO separate private signings with Alex, in which he got his cards signed. Alex passed away VERY shortly before HOF weekend, when he would have signed his 100 "GOLD" cards for the Hall. But, Ron had hit the proverbial "Jackpot" According to what Ron told me, he had Alex sign SEVENTY TWO (72) Goal Line Art cards, and he had all of them. They have of course all been sold, you see one about every 4-6 months go for sale. They usually sell in the 950.00-1,300.00 range. I have NEVER owned a Alex Wojciechowicz Goal Line art card. ( yet ) !!!

Dan Fortmann. The toughest, rarest, most sought after Goal Line of them all. Dan did NOT sign ANY of his 100 GOLD cards. Judy ( retired gift shop manager at the HOF ) and I know each other pretty well. She told me that they ( the Hall ) sent all 150 Goal Line cards to Dan. 100 Gold, and 50 Proof . According to what Dan's wife, I think her name was Marie, told Judy, Dan could only sign the first 33 Proof cards. He did not sign any of the Gold cards. For many years, I was the owner of card # 1/50 of the Goal Line Art Dan Fortmann card. I never thought I would give it up. But, Rod and I worked about an $8,000.00 over breakfast one day. And now, he is the owner of card # 1/50. I hope one day to re-aquirre it from him, but he made me a VERY generous offer of autographs and cash, and to para-phrase, " he made me an offer I couldn't refuse" You see MAYBE, one a year go for sale, and they usually go for around 2,500.00 or so. But, as we all know, anything #'d ONE of something has a Premium on it. I have also heard that Jim Mazziati was able to get THREE cards signed for himself from Dan, BEFORE he signed the 33 for the Hall. I have been told this by another VERY well known, VERY well respected dealer, but I would prefer to not mention his name. Joe ( JMDVM ) knows who I'm talking about.

  • There were other Alex Wojciechowicz cards that were signed and mailed before he died. Collectors had sent them along with money for the signature. A batch was mailed the Friday before he died. There are others out there besides Ron's 72

OK guys - this post is something I think all of you will get a kick out of and enjoy. So a few weeks ago I made an ebay purchase:

    image

It's a dinner menu that was signed by the 1960 LA Rams organization. In fact, if you look closely to the left of the potatoes and under the sides of meat, you'll see why I decided to purchase the menu:

    image

I love the 'President' inscription underneath the signature. I have never seen this before and the fact that the Reeves signature stood alone, had the inscription, and wasn't overlapping any meat or potatoes made it a great choice for me. image

So what to do with this menu? It's too big and bulky for my liking, so here was my solution.

    image

I usually am the one who hates people who cut-up items of history to make a signature stand alone. But it's not like this is a historical document - this is a dinner menu for crying out loud. I'm sure most of you see where this is heading, as my next move was to send the card off to Canada to our dear friend Knuckles. He was gracious enough to turn my ratty old dinner menu into this gorgeous creation:

    image

It has one more stop to make before it gets scanned into my HOF PC for eternity (or until my family sells it after I pass away), and that's to PSA/DNA for encapsulation. Since it's not a licensed card it will be labeled as a cut autograph, but I couldn't think of a better Reeves to have in one's collection.

Rev, thanks for posting that article. After I read that article in my copy of Grid Iron Greats a couple of years ago I contacted Ron and purchased my 1975 signed Fleer Immortal card from him and it was authenticated by JSA and slabbed by Beckett. It was the only card t that I was missing from that set. I have pictures of a few different items that I have authenticated by either JSA or PSA/DNA all with variations of his signature. If you back track through the pages of this forum you will find them.
  • Met Rocke for a beer a few nights ago to show him what I recently purchased...a 2011 Sports Icons cut photo card signed "Bob Hayes 22", a 2010 Plates and Patches Ken Strong card
(cut from an unlined index card instead of the usual "Kenneth E Strong" cut check), a Marshall Goldberg signed paper photo and a Norm Van Brocklin slabbed auto. Now I'm down to needing 55 more signatures. Currently I'm looking for Trafton, Conzelman, Christiansen, Millner, Finks, Nevers and Tunnell..If anyone is wanting to sell an extra that they may have, please message me. Also if anyone who is tech savvy would explain to me how to post photos on the forum, I would much appreciate it. I've tried numerous times to upload pics but a prompt comes up saying that the file is too big?? I took photos of my AFL players ring, and the two prized autos in my collection: Lambeau and Kiesling..I'd love to post them!

  • I normally don't tout other peoples auctions, but I would recommend checking out Reese's 97 Legends autos. With the black trim and edges it is difficult to get hi grades on these cards. Also, factor in the these cards were PSA/DNA graded. That translates to grading fees being $15 per card ($10 if you were able to get in on any of the group bulk submissions). Plus the fact that this set is a landmark set when it comes to autograph football, and these cards are a bargain at the opening bid levels.
