Rocke, That was a really cool article. I think anything that brings attention to the hobby is a great thing. We haven't done a whole lot lately but Zack is excited about the CSA show with Deacon Jones. Hopefully we'll see you there. Talk to you soon. Bill
Sent in 50 pieces to PSA/DNA for authentication (first time submitting myself) and was very happy with the service, price, and turnaround time. Of the 50 pieces, only 1 came back as questionable authentication. If you guys saw the list of what I submitted, I am sure you could have picked out the one that was going to be trouble without me even saying.....Sid Luckman.

So multi-signed items like that are often signed at appearances and not through the mail. Most people don't want to send something and take the risk when they have so much already invested. So how does a family member sign for Sid if that's the case? I was thinking the same thing about the signed photo that had other autographs on it. Obviously, there is no way to know the circumstances around either of these two items though.....Thanks.
Understand, just saying that a search for Sid Luckman autographs bring up a lot of multi-signed items with his signature being identical to the three questionable examples shown here. I guess a lot of people sent Mr. Luckman multi-signed items to sign via the mail:}. Luckily, I have other items signed by him that I think will pass. Thanks Jim for the image of your football.....really appreciate it.

Are you still interested in one of the Carl Storck checks? I think Rod was interested in one of them too. Let me know, as I won the lot of 6 from Huggins & Scott and am obviously looking to move some of them. Also, anyone else interested, just let me know. Obviously, I am keeping the nicest one for myself, but the rest are up for sale or trade. Here is the link to them: http://hugginsandscott.com/cgi-bin/showitem.pl?itemid=13704
Albersheim won the lot of them in the last auction. Here is his listing about Storck. Note the $595 price at the end that he is asking. I think I can do a bit better than that!
Bart
Carl Storck-(D. 1950) was a co-founder of the National Football League, as well as the founding owner of the Dayton Triangles. He was also the Triangles coach from 1922 until 1926. Storck served as the secretary-treasurer of the NFL from 1921 to 1939. Upon the death of Joe Carr, he served as president of the National Football League. Citing ill health, Storck only held the title of president until 1941. Storck started his football career as a local football hero in Dayton, Ohio, staring for St. Mary's College (now known as Dayton University). After graduation, Stork played semi-pro football for a local team that would later become the Dayton Tirangles. Storck became the team's manager in 1918 and guide his team into the the NFL (then called the American Professional Football Association). He represented Dayton at Ralph Hay's Hupmobile dealership on September 17, 1920. This meeting marked the formation of the NFL. Like nearly all managers, Storck was an unpaid volunteer; he had fulltime employment as a job foreman in the Inspection and Packing Department at the National Cash Register Company. The Triangles would have trouble competing in the increasingly competitive NFL, and Storck would eventual sell them in 1930 to Bill Dwyer, who moved the team to Brooklyn and named them the Brooklyn Dodgers. We offer an Eagles check signed by Bert Bell (HOF D. 1959) and endorsed on the back by Storck who is an incredibly rare autograph $595
Yeah, his prices are a bit high I would say. I told him, twice, about William 'Bill' Gray Jr. being alive and he still has him listed as deceased (1978) on his list. Go figure.

Interesting response from Ralph Wilson Jr. I sent cards from 1989 and 1990 that I got from Greg (thanks again). Sent those to Buffalo on Sept 16th. Received my SASE back today, postmarked from Detroit. In my sase I found this 1964 Topps Bills team card and this interesting commemorative ticket from the 1st home game this year. I can't find any on eBay or anywhere else online. It has wear marks on the back around clip hole. I wonder who might have worn this. I guess its possible that it was RWJr actual pass, but obviously no way to check that. I just hope he didn't get the stuff mixed up and send me someone else's stuff.
Looking to have some custom cuts or plain custom cards built? PM me.

Went to SCD website and read a nice article about a certain football HOF autograph collector. Your famous man! >>
Wow, I don't check in for a few days, and all kinds of things are going on. First of all, THANKS VERY MUCH Mark, and everyone else that posted something nice to say about that article. I DO appreciate it VERY much. Scott Fragale talked to me on the phone for about an hour and 1/2 about a week after the National. I didn't post anything about it, because I was so afraid that he would change his mind and decide that an article about an autograph collector and his collection and his story wasn't worthy of their magazine. I just kept hoping that it would happen. Originally, it was going to be in last month, but then Scott sent me an Email and said I had been pushed out last month. He said I would be in next month. So, I had to just keep waiting and hoping. The bad part is, I was really hoping that some of the pictures that were taken at the IX center in Cleveland during the National would have been part of the story. Especially the group picture of Joe Mancino ( JMDVM ), Zack ( zaxdad ), Bart (bdbop), Rod, and myself. I really do feel honored that they did that story about me and my collection, but I really do hope that I spoke for all of us, as, really, my story is probably not much different that everyone else that posts here. The funny thing is, the interview is on the SCD website and NOT the Tuffstuff website, BUT, it is in the current Tuffstuff magazine, and NOT the SCD magazine. The Tuffstuff issue is the November 2009 issue with Adrian Peterson on the cover. Really cool, since my son Ben is mentioned in the article, his favorite player is Adrian Peterson, and Ben got to meet, and have his picture with Adrian at a CSA show last year. Rocke

After searching for close to a decade, I finally obtained the signature of whom many consider to be the greatest football player of the 19th century. His name is Frank Hinkey, who played end for Yale from 1891-94. He later coached the Yale team and even coached the Dayton Triangles in the early 1920's. He died from TB in 1925. I obtained this signature from a scrapbook of one of his fellow classmates.
Dug this letter up this past weekend. I acquired the John Maulbetsch estate several years ago. This is a letter signed by Steve Owen to his former mentor and coach. Signature isn't the greatest, but the content is unique.
That Hinckey is great - I've been looking for Gill and Beecher, but barely know where to turn - I do have a Maulbetsch however, which I really like because of the Steve Owen connection - don't you think the initials next to Steve mean it was signed by a secretary?
It is tough to tell with just the first name, so I could go either way. Typically the initials represent who typed the letter, so I figured Owen wrote them. Plus, if the secretary signed it, why sign only the first name? Guess we will never know....
In regards to Beecher and Gill....good luck. I've been looking for Gill for awhile now. Gill became a preacher later in life and wrote a religious book with Gifford Pinchot. May find a signed copy out there.
Love to see your Maully sig when you get the chance.
I've been trying to track down Gill through the book and through his work as a Missionary in China and the churches he served in Vermont - my daughter is in college in Vermont and I may travel to the towns he served and see what I can dig up - email has not worked so far. Here's a Maulbetsch GPC - too bad some ink from a postmark got on the back of the card.
Great Maully sig. I thought he was pretty tough to come by, but I sold a nice sig of his on ebay for less than $75 last month. There just isn't much interest in these college hofers....yet.
The Walter Camp papers, which are on microfilm at several libraries around the US, have several letters by Beecher and Gill. You may get some leads through those papers (company letterheads, content, etc). At the very least, you'll have examples for comparison. I rely heavily on these papers to confirm my early signatures are genuine. The Notre Dame archivist will send copies via email for free if you ask nicely.

Here is a scan of my 3X5:
Here is a link to an autographed photo that is being sold by Grandstand Sports that has a signature exactly identical to mine:
Sid Luckman Signed Photo
So would you consider these to be secretary signatures? I am thinking that I will just submit my 1997 Leaf certified Luckman in the next batch.

Currency Wants: Any note with serial number 00000731
Here is a link to a HOF ball I have. Sadly, it has what I believe is a fake Sid Luckman.
Currency Wants: Any note with serial number 00000731
So multi-signed items like that are often signed at appearances and not through the mail. Most people don't want to send something and take the risk when they have so much already invested. So how does a family member sign for Sid if that's the case? I was thinking the same thing about the signed photo that had other autographs on it. Obviously, there is no way to know the circumstances around either of these two items though.....Thanks.
Ken
That is my football. I sent it to Luckman in 1993 or so.
Currency Wants: Any note with serial number 00000731

Go figure.

What's funny is that I sent a 1964 Bill team card several weeks ago...so that might actually be mine. I'll let you know what I receive...and we can swap cards if he sent me your cards by mistake!

Jay,
As Frank said, I sold my Allen to Frank and bought a signed 66 Philly Rams team card from KHW along with a signed 57 Topps Charley Conerly for my signed 57 Topps set. The only problem is that the 66 Philly signed George Allen is a blue flip - so I'll need to have it reslabbed.

Dug this letter up this past weekend. I acquired the John Maulbetsch estate several years ago. This is a letter signed by Steve Owen to his former mentor and coach. Signature isn't the greatest, but the content is unique.
In regards to Beecher and Gill....good luck. I've been looking for Gill for awhile now. Gill became a preacher later in life and wrote a religious book with Gifford Pinchot. May find a signed copy out there.
Love to see your Maully sig when you get the chance.
