I talk to people around Canton a lot, and I am good friends with some of the local media people. They talk about Eddie D. What did he do to grow the game, to make it bigger, for the overall betterment of the game. I am still waiting to get even one response, other than "well he owned the team when they won 5 Super Bowls"

I believe that George Young belongs in the HOF and will be elected in the next few years, despite his warts! He came in to a team in chaos , 15 years of losing with Tim and Wel at war, and only the Giant family in the GM position. Bob Gibson and the fumble game, the icing on the Giant cake. He brought in Ray Perkins who brought discipline and structure to a Giant team, along with Parcells, Belichick and Crennel. He was the only 5 time winner of the NFL Ex. Of the year. He picked Bill , yet blew off Belichick for Handley's! He did cost Phil 3 yrs and the HOF. He refused to accept or understand the Cap and free agency, we lost 3 of our 4 DB's in 2 weeks. His draft record in round 1 was awful( see Dave Young) yet his second round selections and later were amazing, See Strahan, Barber,Sehorn,Armstead, Toomer etc!.The bottom line is that My Dad and I would never have been sitting in the Rose Bowl watching my Giants ( my Dad was a Huge Cowboy fan), win a Super Bowl on 01/27/87, without George Young! A memory, I Cherish!
Well said Craig. No one is perfect. He did luck out when Ray Perkins bolted for Alabama, thus opening the door for Parcells. Dave Young....blast from the past! True story, I'm sitting in a bar in Olney,MD where I was living. This was before Directv, so I'm sitting with three friends, Giants are playing the Cards. 2 middle age men sitting at the next table, Giants fans. So there are 6 of us, rooting for the Giants. Giants losing. Rookie Dave Young drops a sure first down pass in the red zone. I jump up screaming "#1 draft pick and he can't hang on to the damn ball!". Which prompts one of our new friends to say "Dave Young is my son". Of course I don't believe him, but then the proof starts coming out. Talk about embarrassing! I said, "look, nothing personal but I want your son to do well, we NEED him to do well." All was forgiven and we'd watch the games together. Ironically, his name was also George. He was a realtor in the next town over. I did lose touch with him, but it had nothing to do with his son being a bust.....

Rocke,
As life long Giant fans, Joe and I have the perspective and knowledge of all the plus and minuses of George Young. Think you can find any negatives in the careers of Modell and Tagliablue?? George Young SHOULD and WILL be elected to the HOF!
I agree, we all make mistakes during our lifetime and in our job, so I am positive that he will be elected sometime with this new selection process, because now contributors don't have to fight against players and coaches. So I am sure he is a future Hall of Famer. What about Jack Kent Cooke should he be in the HOF.
Any other sportswriter, referee or broadcaster that you may think of.
For example is there any referee that you think may be considered: Tunney, McNally, Hochuli maybe.
Any votes for Robert Kraft or Jerry Jones, LOL!!!
Come one, we all know better, let's try some of the ones that have not been finalists!!! Nathan said Ed Block, would be a great addition since there are no trainers in the HOF, but does he deserves to be inducted, what do you think guys???

Think about it, Pro Football is the only HOF without referees, Hockey, Basketball, Boxing all have inducted Ref's and Baseball has several Umpires enshrined. My wish is that Jerry Jones has a long life and Many more years as the Boy's GM. Keep on keeping on Jerry!

Trainers? Why not start inducting water boys and equipment managers? Refs I can see. As for George Young, I think he belongs. He rescued a floundering franchise, laid the foundation that re-established a winning culture in NY. Like any GM, he had some gaffes, but hiring Parcells, then drafting LT and Simms when the popular sentiment was to take George Rogers and Jack Thompson turned the Giants around. So yes Rocke, George Young belongs. Jerry Jones----yes for the Clowns HOF....if they'd have him!
I really don't know much about George Young. Figure I was a little on the young side to know much about him. (No pun intended.)
I would have been 15 when he was done with the Giants, so all I knew at the time was Steelers and even my knowledge about them other than Wins & Losses was very limited. lol.
I have been watching to pick up something of him at a reasonable price though as I had heard his name dropped before as a possible candidate. With the limited amount of current HOFers I need, it's left me with very little to pick up other than try to find guys who might make it someday until I stumble upon one of the names I need.
It just seems hard to believe psa has other examples on hand of Johnny writing blood the wrong way and retracing the B over The john definantly looks like his hand writing though not calling it out just wanted additional opionion, and also an educational question does anyone know if blue felt markers were around before 1985 Ive seen alot of black felt tip but not much blue
Wow ! So much to catch up on ! First things first: Johnny Blood. Whaaaat?! This is just horrible, lol! Everything about it is horrible. If Blood did indeed sign this it was clearly late in his life when he was so very ill that his muscle memory even forgot how to sign his name. I am with GR on the 'John" part though. And blue writing pens were readily available. Flair pens were popular . Very popular ! My dad sold stionary supplies for a living and they were always around...short life span though. But if PSA says its good it must be. The laws the law. Even if it is you should be able to find a COUPLE nice pieces for that ridiculous asking price. OY ! Hope everyone who went enjoyed the National and HOF Induction ceremonies ! I set my DVR to run an hour and a half over and still missed Ray Guy, Andre & Strahan. Got to watch on the HOF Site but come on! - though I really kind of enjoyed Aeneas Williams speech. After watching him play his whole career w/o saying a word - testify ! Right on. Did Strahan sign anything for anyone other than at his paid appearence ? Don't have Strahan - back up to 11 I need.
The old saying is " A guy is either a Hall of Famer or he isn't". None of this first ballot signifigance you hear so much of - that terminology is media tagged and has found its way into the lexicon of discussing these HOFers. Its a little insulting and I'm disappointed it has gained traction - like it matters . I'm also a little disappointed at the new stipulation regarding Contributors. There are many who have been overlooked and should have been inducted by now - most of which have been mentioned. And while it may open doors to Refs and Team Mgmt. a little more those doors have always been open. They always have had the opportunity and now the Hall is contracting its already overfilled Senior Nominees pool to allow Contributors a better chance than they have at least always had? It comes across as Agenda. IMO. Perhaps it offers Refs a chance . When you run out of players and Front of the House guys THEN you can worry about the Refs. How about Jack Vainisi ? Didn't he scout 10 Hall of Famers?
So George Young? Hall of Famer. And Phil Simms....HALL OF FAMER ! Hell, I wouldn't mind a bit seeing Conerly go in ! Saw Phil play his whole career and he was tough, boy ! I can't think of ANY QB's at that time who would and could go straight up with Parcells and grab L.T. and tell him to get it going ! He didn't do that to Harry Carson though. See? Phil was smart too ! Hope everyone is collecting well - Rocke: Congrats on cornering the market on Dick Barwegan ! I still need one And since you have read this far: Congrats to me. Hey Thanks: I already have all my order set for Santa Clara, LOL!!!

Chris, was that you who outbid me on the TMCA Heinrich-Dublinski-Conerly card??? I need Heinrich...Didn't realize you were doing the 58 Giants-Colts rosters. I'm about 80% on the Giants, 50% on the Colts. Also I participated in the Strahan signing with Collectors Showcase, so I have extra GLAs and 11 x 14s of Strahans sack of Favre which I took when I covered the game, if anyone is interested. Went back and checked. It was 550 for the one I picked up. So a little more than the 3x5s, but it's a complete signature in a card, so I will take it.
I think if we were all to put our lists of top 10 overlooked & deserving guys for the HOF there would be 6-7 of the same ones on every list. Tinglehoff is one of them so at least that's one . Was I hoping they would finally do right by Kramer & Robinson? Sure, but Congrats to Mick ! He deserves it too!! They sure had some tough, tough teams in MN within a fairly short time...who was their GM that put them from expansion team to Super Bowl contenders in 7 years or so?
<< <i>I read in Peter King's MMQ that he was going to push HARD for Tingelhoff. He is deserving - but not more so than Kramer IMO. >>
Agree. There is a reason those Vikings teams were manhandled at the line of scrimmage in every Super Bowl---Chiefs, Dolphins, Raiders, Steelers---and some say Tinglehoff was overmatched.
I was about to post this as well, Derrick. That is just insane though. I do question it a little unless that r***c is someone here as I ALWAYS question when someone has private feedback. (If anyone knows who this is, it obviously makes my argument completely invalid.) He also helped bid up his Arnie Herber, but not nearly as much. If this is truly what McNally is going for though, I feel I got a steal on my cut.
I just looked and am just under $340 into this one.
It's one of only 3 items in my collection not in a PSA holder (the other two are also in JSA/BGS holders), and the J is ever so slightly cutoff but apparently that'll have to do for my PC. The scan when I got this on ebay was really fuzzy and made the signature look horrible which is why I think I got it at the price I did.

Looking for Autos of HOFers Charles Bidwill, Tim Mara, Joe Carr, Fritz Pollard, Guy Chamberlin & Bill Hewitt
Yeah, I remember you winning that Derrick and how jealous I was. It's still a pretty nice piece. I am surprised the cut of him hasn't come out of NT...unless someone did pull it and is keeping it. It looked pretty similar to mine, maybe a little better, but with this price, even if it does come out, it will go for crazy money...or at least the person will expect crazy money. (Just like that Hinkle I pointed out to you.)
That and the Thorpe are the two main cuts I haven't seen and the Thorpe just wasn't all that nice looking either.
Either way, it seems that prices are going back up again after it seemed that prices were down for a while. Maybe I'm wrong in that observation, but it just seems like it. (Or maybe it's just at the point where it seems up because of what I have to pay for what I need. Haha.)
I agree that the card is overpriced compared to other signed McNally signed cards/cuts; however a person collecting the 1963 Stancraft set may be willing to lay down serious money for that card. I've seen a good number of signed cards from the 1963 Stancraft set; yet this is the first signed McNally that I've seen. The autograph qualify is terrible; however there can't be many of those cards in circulation.
There can be quite a premium attached to certain signed cards due more to the scarcity of the card than on the value of the person's signature. For example, Pete Pihos on a standard medium (e.g. photo, index card, Swell card) would cost $10 to $20, but a signed 1948 Bowman would easily sell for $200+.

Some of you know I recently obtained the Frank Hinkey estate from descendants of his wife. All sorts of gems were in this collection...Frank's personal notebooks and library, handwritten letters, photographs, marriage book, even his wallet. However everything was from after Frank got married in 1912...except this beauty. This is Frank Hinkey's personal 1895 Yale senior yearbook. Not only is his personal library sticker on the inside front cover but he signed the first page. Frank Hinkey was a 4x All-American for Yale from 1891-94. He passed away from TB in 1925 and was an inaugural member of the CFHOF in 1951. Here are a few photos.
Dave Revsine, lead studio host for the Big Ten Network, recently released a fantastic book on the history of American Football from the period of 1890-1915. The book is called "The Opening Kickoff: The Tumultuous Birth of a Football Nation". It is the best book I ever read that covers this early period of football history. He also focuses his efforts on the career of Wisconsin kicking legend Pat O'Dea.
By the way, he is a huge fan of our hobby. I had a great conversation with him today. Check out his website http://www.daverevsine.com.
Hi: Well I am not bored at all!!! I don't want to show off, but I am at SF ready to go to the first regular season game ever at Levi's Stadium we will play against the bears on sunday!!! I went to the stadium today and take the tour, it is certainly very nice, but the bad news is that it is a 2 hours ride to get there, WOW 2 hours from SF to the new Stadium, it is realy far!!! Anyway, I look foward for a great game and hopefully we will win the game!!!

<< <i>I agree, we all make mistakes during our lifetime and in our job, so I am positive that he will be elected sometime with this new selection process, because now contributors don't have to fight against players and coaches. So I am sure he is a future Hall of Famer.
What about Jack Kent Cooke should he be in the HOF.
Any other sportswriter, referee or broadcaster that you may think of.

Anyone have any opionions on this "Blod" McNally?
Linked it for you. What kind of questions did you have, other than the marker being really bad

Nah, I picked mine up as a pack pulled cut from Leaf and it cost me just a little over $600, if I remember correct. That asking price is just asinine.
I still need one
And since you have read this far:
Congrats to me. I recently finished the 1958 Championship Game Rosters of bot the Colts and Giants and am thinking about Matteing out the whole damn thing !! Woo-Hoo !
Maybe I mentioned this... In which case I also finished off the 57 Lions Championship & the 1956 NY GIants Championship team !
VERY VERY sorry for the manifesto . Been meaning to post on various topics for a month !
Cesar - need anything from Santa Clara next month? Think I will go see Ronnie Lott .
ps- I bet George Young is one of the 2 Contributors nominated . Any takers? Rocke?...put up a Barwegan?
I already have all my order set for Santa Clara, LOL!!!
But if you need tickets for the game against the Eagles that weekend I have 2 for sale Section 128 Row 5 on New Levi's Stadium, LOL!!!
Ronnie Lott is a great signer I have 2 8x10's personalized with inscriptions from him!!!
I hope you enjoy GTSM!!!
Rocke has not accepted my bet yet, so let's see which one he want to accept, LOL!!!
And I am with you about George Young and Connerly.
But I really want to see Charles Haley in the HOF!!!

Yea, another vote for Simms!

Went back and checked. It was 550 for the one I picked up. So a little more than the 3x5s, but it's a complete signature in a card, so I will take it.

They sure had some tough, tough teams in MN within a fairly short time...who was their GM that put them from expansion team to Super Bowl contenders in 7 years or so?
Edit: when do they announce contributors?

Thanks for letting me share.

Cheers

Well I am not bored at all!!!
Go niners!!!
