I won the 57 Topps Jim Patton and am now only 12 cards away from finishing the set. Has anyone seen a signed 57 Topps Len Ford or Ronnie Knox? Those are my two "white whales" for the 57 Topps set. I've seen 3 or 4 signed 55 Bowman Len Ford rc's - but never a signed 57 Topps. Also, Ronnie Knox fell off the face of the earth after playing football - and his signature seems nearly impossible to find
Greg, Well I'm glad I didn't get into a battle for that '57 Patton. Funny, that same night there was something I was really after ( a slabbed Willie Galimore GPC ) and I thought for sure that would have drawn more interest. Suprisingly, it just ended with my offer. The Seller did immediately contact me with an offer to buy it back for nearly double my winning bid on behalf of another buyer. I said 'No' and to his eternal credit he sent it right out to me. If you ever decide to part with that Jim Patton ....well I AM a little smitten ! Good bloody luck on Knox though. espescially on that card. From everything I read his experiences were so trying emotionally on him. In large part due to his step-dad who just pushed Ronnie, his Coaches at Cal and UCLA, HALAS.....LOL!...between his stepdad strongarming him on one end and his path to success in the US compromised by that I would be very suprised to see his sig on a 57 Topps Chicago Bears card. Maybe from his brief college days or maybe a CFL card. He was on one of those i think?? I read somewhere that he enjoyed football a lot when he was young, but he was really good at the prep level . Probably much more enjoyable then! Then he just became consumed with the Beat writings and Boho lifestyle. If there is a tougher 57 signed card I am truly curious what it would be. Or what the other 10 are... Ford, Knox, ..

Puppe,
You know more of the back story w/ Ronnie Knox that I do. I've read a few articles online about how his step-father's actions (e.g. Sports Illustrated article) prompted a NCAA investigation that resulted in severe reprimands to several West Coast schools.
Below is my 1957 Topps want list:
GENE GEDMAN JOHN OLSZEWSKI MAURICE BASSETT SAM BAKER LARRY STRICKLAND BUD McFADIN KEN KELLER DON BINGHAM RAY KROUSE LEN FORD RONNIE KNOX TANK YOUNGER
Of this group, I would imagine the toughest to find will be Gedman, Krouse, Strickland, Knox and Ford. Contrarily, Younger should be the easiest to find. I've seen plenty of Younger signed cards on E-Bay - just never a 57 Topps. Krouse will be among the toughest, since he died in 1966. I do have a Krouse signed 55 Bowman from a collector who, as a child, lived near Kezar stadium in SF during the 50's and had near complete sets of 54 and 55 Bowman that he had signed before and after games that he attended. I bought 20 to 30 cards from him including my 55 Bowman Krouse and 55 Bowman Ford. One of my best finds...
As for the 57 Topps Patton, I was surprised the bidding didn't go higher. I obviously coveted the card for my 1957 Topps set - but also as a potential senior nominee for the HOF. I've done very well acquiring potential senior HOF inductees before they are elected. It's amazing how the prices skyrocket after a player is inducted in the HOF.

Well, My buddy Rod didn't win it. But he did find the winner, with it for sale, at the National a couple of years ago. Rod worked a cash + autograph trade to obtain it. For a while, I have been working to come up with the $$$ necessary to obtain it. So....I found a private collector, and I sold him my George Preston Marshall check cut, my Pete Henry check, and sadly, I had to sell one of my "Prizes", my Len Ford 1956 Browns contract. But, within one month, I will have Rod paid off, and this Tim Mara letter will be mine. Down the road, I will get another Pete Henry check, and another GPM check cut, or even better, a TLS , hopefully very similar to what J.T. picked up a few months ago. I do realize I will never have another Len Ford contract, but in order to get the $$$ I needed for this, it was either my Ford contract, My Thorpe business card, or the Walt Kiesling letter.
A Major change to my collection. If you will be in Canton for HOF induction, as always, all of my friends from this thread are invited over to my house, where this year, you can see this thing of beauty in person.
There will be another MAJOR change to my collection, but that won't be posted for another couple of hours.
Thanks again to Rod for helping me to obtain my Mara.

Awesome piece Rocke! Moving those other pieces may sting, but you clearly made the right decision. You'll likely never find another Mara this nice again. You can't pass on an autograph of this caliber. Congrats buddy.
Congrats on a very nice pickup, Rocke. I am definitely at a stalemate for the time being. I have just been picking up small extras and upgrades here and there. Nothing really majorly of note. I definitely feel like I need to move something or do something, but right now I am focusing on clearing out a lot of junk and stuff I just don't need. And you just might find one of those letters. For now, mine is safely tucked away in my safe.
I will be passing back through Sunday evening after Nationals so if any of you guys are hanging out or meeting up, I wouldnt mind stopping by for a bit.
Hope all is well and hope everyone has a safe 4th. I will be in Washington D.C. for a wedding that weekend.
Mark, Mike, and J.T. , Thank You for the nice words. I will have the 500.00 I need to pay it off and have it by Hall of Fame weekend with no problem.
But...
I do have a problem, and unfortunately, it is significant.
A situation has presented itself in my life, and I must ( at least temporarily, I Hope ) sell my Goal Line Art GOLD set. In a perfect world, I would wish for someone on this thread to buy it from me, keep it intact, and in a couple of years, when I come into my inheritance, I could buy it back at sale price, + 10 %. But, this is NOT a perfect world, so I do realize, when I sell it, there is a good chance that the purchaser will not want to re-sell, or GOD forbid, will break it up. I am NOT happy about this, in fact, I am literally sick about it. But, I can find no other option. I would like to do this in person, during HOF weekend, or at the National in Cleveland. If anyone is interested, I would prefer that they send me a Private Message on this site, or a private message on FaceBook. I really do NOT want to discuss the "why are you doing this" aspect. Every card is in perfect shape, and has been in a brand new clear plastic topload since the day I purchased the set, as has every update set. The only imperfection to the set, is a slight smudge of the autograph on the O.J. Simpson card. I don't know if he writes with his left hand, but it looks like the kind of smudge that would be made by a left-handed signer, as their hand goes over the just written signature.
I am asking 20,000 I am not going to take a bunch of pictures to Email. You are all smart people. You know what a Goal Line Art GOLD set is, you know that there are less than 50 of these left intact, You are not going to pay for it, until you get the set in person.
Please PM me any questions you have. This is for the GOLD set ONLY. No other GLA cards, and nothing else in my collection is for sale.
Thank You.

Food for thought for everyone----if someone out there could loan Rocke $20 K while using the GLA set as collateral, you will earn a 10% return. This is safer than the stock market and better than a CD. A contract could be drawn up guaranteeing the set is returned to Rocke and would not be sold. 10% is a nice return. Wish I could do it but we just finished a major home remodel so my liquidity is low at the moment.
Yeah, really wish I was able to help with buying it to hold it for you, Rocke. I know for certain I couldn't even dare come close to buying the whole set as that would be as much as my currently collection, or at least pretty close.
Love the Tim Mara pickup. I am truly sorry bout your need to sell the Gold Goal Line. Hope someone on the site picks it up. Two reasons, I will not be the guy, 20k and the fact, that I am only a Wojo away from a complete Goal Line set. See you in August!
That's one nice custom ! I hope you're happy with how it ended up D. I was wondering if this Fats card counts on the PSA REGISTRY as a PFHOF because it's a custom?
They don't, can't grade a card that's not an official card. You could however do the blue flip registry that tracks graded autos but that's not what most here do.
I will not reveal who, but the buyer was a forum member which makes me feel better

Ok, time to 'fess up. it was me. I used my some of my consignment winnings from my selling my Spiderman collection in Huggins to cover it. Now down to Ray, Bidwell, Carr, Keisling, McNally, Ford, Thorpe, Lambeau......and Walter Jones! My plan is to mount Fats with his GLA card.

Very nice pickup. I am off of buying for the moment since I am going to Nationals. Plus a recent purchase doesn't help either. (Non-card related sadly.)
Wish I could help with your needs, though I do have an extra Jones from Topps TX but the auto is slightly cut off. I am down to 11 (9 if you don't count Aeneas Williams and Haley.)
I think I need to start selling more of my stuff that isn't part of my HOF collection so maybe I can cross one more off my list.

I will go on record saying Jeffrey is second to none. He is quick, extremely reasonable on price, and is very careful with your item. I second what Derrick says about Jeffrey's work. I haven't had as many pieces as Derrick has had done but he has done about 10 or so pieces for me they have all been exceptional.
I have not been able to work with Jeffrey directly, since shipping and customs would make it very complicated, but I have a piece of his work I got from someone of this forum And I can tell you it is a great work!!!
By they way I want to share with you all a piece I was outbid yesterday from probstein: It was a 1946 pamphlet. I stopped at 200 it was sold for $665.55 Woooow!!!

Absolutely. Derrick has already seen the piece he did for me and I love it. Based it on a favorite set of mine. I will be revealing that once it comes back from being slabbed at PSA.

Not sure when I'll get to it. I'm trying to learn how to mat. The mother of one of my co-workers owns a frame shop. My schedule has made it tough to get in. I really like the way you use the classic photos when you mount them with the cuts. Normally I don't purchase cuts but I know how tough Henry is. "Huggy", I never thought I'd get it at $1k. Used $78 in Ebay bucks too. I may have spent my National stash! Hopefully I'll move some stuff at Chantilly this weekend.
"Hopefully I'll move some stuff at Chantilly this weekend." Or of course buy some from your buddy Nate! Cesar, i can see why that went for 600+ that's the type of ephemera people just threw away without thinking, a program people pretty much held onto but a brochure really shouldn't have survived this long

Learning to mat is one of the smartest things I have ever done. A decent mat cutter from Michaels/ACMoore can pay for itself in 2-3 jobs. You order frames at good prices from a handful of places on line and do the whole thing yourself. Almost everything in this album I did myself. Some of these would have been $200 to have cut professionally (Just for the mat and cutting, not including the frame). Photobucket to the rest Some Examples
If you need any advice, I am always willing to help fellow self-framers. Feel free to PM me.
Looking to have some custom cuts or plain custom cards built? PM me.
FYI: Michael Strahan will NOT be part of the class signing at the HOF this year and will not be doing any public signings. He will be doing a private signing with Sports Card Heroes out of MD. I've worked with Todd and Rodney there for many years and are very reliable. They do all of the major shows and will get your items signed with no extra surcharge added to the fees. For more information on the Strahan signing check out there website at www.sportscardheroes.com.

Speaking of Strahan, I have 2 tickets to the enshrinement ceremony. On the field Sec.35 Row 9 seats 17 & 18. They are sold out. My wife had heart surgery and we will not be going anywhere for the next 6-8 weeks! Offering the 2 $75 Tix for a $100 for the pair. I am heart broken, no pun intended not to see Strahan inducted and more disappointed not being able to see the Rocke basement and meet many of the members! Send me an IM if interested!

Not to rain on your parade, but I'm not a fan of Sports Card Heroes. I used them for several years, but ended our relationship after a package of cards that I sent to get signed was lost (claimed they never received it) and the autograph quality was subpar (i.e. they wieren't switching out sharpies as often as they should have been). The last straw was when they had a private signing with Roger Staubach and my rookie card was butchered (sharpie looked like it had been used to sign 100 other items). The guys who run the shop are great - but the service and attention to detail leaves much to be desired.
Rgs,

I've been fortunate all my autographs have been fine. I had one issue where a card got stuck under some other things and didnt get signed but that can happen.

Oh Craig, so sorry to hear that you won't be here. I was looking so forward to meeting you, and having you meet a few of the other nutcases that invade my Rec-Room every year HOF weekend. But I do understand, and I Pray that Hope continues to improve. I'll tell you though, I hope that you don't plan on waiting until Phil Simms gets Inducted to come to Canton again. If that's your game plan, we will NEVER get to meet in person. In my opinion, two Pro Bowls, and a Super Bowl MVP award just doesn't rise to my own personal standards required for Induction. Please consider trying to make it to Canton in 2015.

OK, No one gets away with dismissing Phil Simms! He played in a stadium where the wind wrecked havoc on QBs in Nov-Dec. The best receivers he had where Bavaro, Lionel Manuel,Earnest Gray. When the Giants had no running game in 1984 and 85, he threw for 3800 and 4000 yards. He threw for over 500 yards in a game. He was TOUGH. He was CLUTCH. He threw for 199 TDS and if George Young hadn't blown it and made him a cap casualty so the Giants could start DAVE BROWN, he would have played another 2-3 years. Wellington Mara said he belongs in the Hall. So does Blood Bank Bill. If you didn't see him wek after week, you can't appreciate his greatness. Sadly he won't get in.....but Craig, keep the faith!
Joe is right on the money! Let's add the self proclaimed worst coaching mistake made by Bill Parcels, Brunner over Simms and Ray Handley's decision to suggest the LeBaron/Meredith every other possession QB, with Hoss. Phil told Ray to stick it! I was there each and every home game during his career. George Young blew the cap and cost Phil three more years.
Two different questions will Simms get in to the HOF and does he belong! If you say no to the first, I tend to agree, maybe as a Veteran's selection, if you say Phil does not belong, then you are dead wrong. Sorry Rocke!

Please PM me any questions you have. This is for the GOLD set ONLY. No other GLA cards, and nothing else in my collection is for sale.
Thank You.

Love the Tim Mara pickup. I am truly sorry bout your need to sell the Gold Goal Line. Hope someone on the site picks it up. Two reasons, I will not be the guy, 20k and the fact, that I am only a Wojo away from a complete Goal Line set. See you in August!

Congrats!!!!
My plan is to mount Fats with his GLA card.
<< <i>Ok, time to 'fess up. it was me. I used my some of my consignment winnings from my selling my Spiderman collection in Huggins to cover it. Now down to Ray, Bidwell, Carr, Keisling, McNally, Ford, Thorpe, Lambeau......and Walter Jones!

<< <i>I will go on record saying Jeffrey is second to none. He is quick, extremely reasonable on price, and is very careful with your item. He's had well over $10k worth of my collection, and I've never been worried for a minute. If anyone is thinking of getting anything done I would really suggest trying it out >>
Absolutely. Derrick has already seen the piece he did for me and I love it. Based it on a favorite set of mine. I will be revealing that once it comes back from being slabbed at PSA.
<< <i>Glad to hear so many of you all like my work. I am always available to make some customs. Just shoot me a PM.

<< <i>FYI: Michael Strahan will NOT be part of the class signing at the HOF this year and will not be doing any public signings.

I'm going to remove my previous comments about Sports Card Heroes...they were inappropriate.

<< <i>Speaking of Strahan, I have 2 tickets to the enshrinement ceremony.

Rocke
Two different questions will Simms get in to the HOF and does he belong! If you say no to the first, I tend to agree, maybe as a Veteran's selection, if you say Phil does not belong, then you are dead wrong. Sorry Rocke!
See Len Dawson stats.
