  • << <i>Chris, Dick Stanfel was a Vet nominated candidate twice and did not get in. Also, not so sure Brooks was better than Strahan...... >>

I'm not so sure Brooks was better either. This was more of a dart throw for guessing sake - and to be a little more different than Tnspro' s picks. For playing two different positions they were surprisingly similar. Both could play the pass - and Strahan was a DE- and line up anywhere, although Strahan would usually come right at you. I always liked that. Strahan also has good will, is popular, on TV, etc. I felt watching both of these guys that they would probably be HOF ers but never thought " WOW! There's the best player going! "
My feelings on the Vet committee and Stanfel are on these pages somewhere..I thought it was embarrassing on at least a couple levels and there is no way they do it again so soon. Especially since Big Claude was nommed so recently.
I wonder if you guys feel the same way about the ceremony tonight...that the NFL is creating their own tradition with it. Combining the Red Carpet extravaganza , like t h e Oscars,
With Tv coverage and awards and fashion and HOF announcements all coming together the night before Super Bowl. People will watch. In 5 years it will be established. In 10 - tradition.
Honestly I thought around 1990 or so that the NFL couldn't get any bigger. Man, w a s I wrong!!
And I'm cool with any of those finalists....Ray Guy, though.

<< <i>Wasn't Marshall Goldberg a Sr Nominee twice as well? To be honest, my thought process is if you were a Sr Nominee once and were turned down then you shouldn't be able to have a second go round. I never understood that philosophy. You need 80% of the vote at that points against no one else....if you didn't make it at that point I'm not sure why you get another chance. >>

There have been SIX instances of the same person being a SENIOR nominee TWICE.
Henry Jordan. Nominated in 1989, Voted thumbs down for election. 1995, Voted IN to the HOF.
Lou Creekmur. Nominated in 1980, Voted thumbs down for election. 1996, Voted IN to the HOF.
Marshall Goldberg. Nominated in 1979, Voted thumbs down for election. Nominated in 2008, voted thumbs down again.
Bob Hayes. Nominated in 2004, Voted thumbs down for election. 2009, Voted IN to the HOF.
Dick Stanfel. Nominated in 1993, Voted thumbs down for election. Nominated in 2012, voted thumbs down again.
Claude Humphrey. Nominated in 2009, Voted thumbs down for election. 2014, We will find out tomorrow.

So, not counting Claude, the previous five, TWO TIME nominees, THREE got in on their 2nd try, and TWO got turned down a 2nd time.
My opinion, I don't think Goldberg even deserved to be a ONE time Senior nominee, let alone twice. Marshall was 2nd Team ALL-PRO ONE time. That's it !!!! How he has been nominated TWICE, while Randy Gradishar, and Al Wistert, are still waiting, just totally baffles me. However, I think that Stanfel should have been elected into the Hall. He only played seven years, but went to FIVE Pro Bowls, and was ALL-DECADE in the 1950's.
No one has been a Senior nominee three times.
    Rocke >>

The fact that Stanfel hasn't made it in after 2 times around is mind blowing. Though his career was short compared to today's standards he was either an All Pro or Pro Bowler for 6 out of his 7 seasons. He was probably the best player at his position during that time period as well.

Just a note that Lavie Dilweg and Hunk Anderson are the only two that were selected to the 1920's NFL All decade team that are not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Well, not too bad on who I had versus who I needed.

Still need Williams, Brooks and Humphrey.

I don't think any had too many pack pulled autos as of yet other than maybe Brooks I know had a few.

I know a certain someone who disagrees, but still think Bettis should have made it this year, but again, I admit I am bias. image

He will be call you at half time with an offer you can't refuse.
  • Hello, Just a few thoughts.

First of all, J.T. I have no idea who that certain someone is, that you refer to image

2nd, Hey Rev. Mike, no doubt that Lavvie Dilweg should be in. I just don't want, and can't afford it to happen until I have an autograph from him. Have any idea who might have one I can buy image

3rd, dfr52 ( sorry, I don't know your name ) I agree 100 %. It is mind blowing that he get turned down twice. Since there are only two men that have been nominated twice, and turned down twice ( Stanfel and Goldberg ) and I don't think Goldberg should have ever even been nominated, Stanfel is probably the only person in our lifetime that could possibly be a Senior nominee THREE times.

  • Rev, pretty remarkable that information exists at all. Fairly comprehensive reporting by the Times.
It seems the erstwhile Mr. Carroll was with the club awhile before embarking on a career as an immortal serial killer!image

I'm waiting to see what the autograph prices are going to be before I make my decision. I think $40 is rip off just get in. Currently non of the listed groups have 25 HOFers. Group #3 seems to have all the big names listed. I'll make my decision when I see the price list, but paying $40 to get pictures seems like a ripoff to me.

Poor Joe - seems he had a dream about a championship game held in his beloved Giants stadium where the Giants watched from the stands as the brother of their quarterback got squashed like a bug in front of a crowd of millions - it sent him into a homicidal spiral.

Joe Carroll got his hands dirty on tonight's episode. The center snapped the ball over his and Joe takes him out.....

$40 just to get in? That's crazy.

can we pleeeease not mention any snapping of balls over heads? That safety just CRUSHED my pool ! Just. Crushed.
But onward. Regarding the Fanfest: I get the whole experience aspect of this and it sounds kind of cool in a crowded, Comic-con ( without any dealers) kind of way. The Hall has been taliking about taking a more interactive version on the road and it makes sense to have inductees in attendence- but how does the autograph aspect work? And what would be able to be signed?
EDIT to reflect that I actually read the FAQ's. It just offers no info on who will be when or where per se. I'm guessing you can bring any 1 item to be signed.
Oh- and has anyone heard of the whereabouts and/or well being of Tommy McDonald? I haven't seen or heard him attending any events in a while.
  • JMDVMJMDVM Posts: 950 ✭✭✭
Tommy McDonald was not at the 2013 Induction, and if I recall, he missed 2012 as well. On another subject, did any one here win the Curly Lambeau album page at $644 on Ebay today? It was not authenticated, but the seller said he'd do a full refund. I passed.

I brought 28 photos to JSA this weekend at Dugout Zone in Ellicott City, MD. I had doubts about my Tarkenton, Csonka and Dorsett. All 3 failed. Can't remember how I got them but Csonka and Dorsett, as well as a Butkus that previously failed had COAs from "Plaques Unlimited" of Wharton NJ, Tom Goodrich, President. Luckily I didn't have much in them and I could have bought them on "Teletrade" years ago or "Coaches Corner". Anyone out there have a similar experience? FYI, my George Young photo, obtained through Ralph Paticchio in SCD came back "inconclusive". They thought the signature looked shakey, but if you look at the photo, George Young had lost a ton of weight as he was battling a terminal illness.

Joe thats tough on the Young it's worth getting a second opionion from Psa Young on an 8x10 us very tough, I only have him on a 3x5. Over the weekend I picked up A Daniel Reeves piece, it's on his own stationary and just signed Dan but it looks pretty good, passed the psa quick opionion. Should be on its way here (:

  • Please excuse me for being self-indulgent, and feeling sorry for myself right now. I am absolutely sick, and am in the middle of a good cry right now. A few minutes ago, I received a text from a friend of mine, informing me that someone that I never had the privilege of meeting, has passed away. Chuck Such died this evening in Florida. In case you don't know, in 1959, Chuck was a young writer for the Canton Repository newspaper. The Sunday headline, of the December 6th, 1959 Newspaper, is, to a pretty fair extent, has helped shape my Life. The Headline read, " PRO FOOTBALL NEEDS HALL OF FAME AND LOGICAL SITE IS HERE "

I talked with Chuck a number of times on the phone, and bought some stuff from him, that is now part of my Permanent Personal collection. But, GOD forgive me, I feel cheated, because I so desperately wanted to meet Chuck and have my picture taken with him.

Has anyone ever done any business with HistoryDirect on eBay? I would sell everything I have to them if you could get 50% of the price they are selling items for. Lou Groza signed GLA for $850. Lou Groza signed photos for $999. I asked if they were interested in buying any items and they suggested I go to RR auctions. How about a Sammy Baugh signed 8x10 for $2K!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey guys, know this really isn't a selling thread, but wanted to give you guys first chance at some of my extra HOF autos. Got caught with my pants down and no lube by the IRS. I think I might be able to take care of a fair amount of it before April 15th on my own, but needing to sell a few things to try and pay off the rest. Unfortunately, this also means I won't be making it to Nationals this year unless I get a lot of overtime all of a sudden, but that doesn't look likely either. Anyhow, if you see something in my bucket here that you are interested in, let me know. Probably going to throw some stuff up on eBay in the next few days or so, otherwise. (There are a few sub folders too, including a very nice Earle "Greasy" Neale, but probably would need too much out of that. lol)

Anyhow, here is the folder. If you see something you like, probably best to email me at jtmorgan [at] comcast.net

    Hey guys,

Hope everyone is doing well and staying warm this winter. I picked up a couple of neat 19th century football autographs.

This is a signed letter by Charles Otis Gill to Alexander Weyand regarding the use of outstretched arms on the offensive line. Charles Gill played tackle for Yale from 1885-89. Camp selected Gill and teammates Amos Alonzo Stagg and William Heffelfinger for the first ever College Football All-America Team. Walter Camp once stated that Charles Gill was the best of the bunch. After Gill's playing days he was a devoted American Congregationalist clergyman. Gill passed away in 1959.

    image

Here is a signed book by George H Brooke, Swarthmore fullback from 1889-92 and Univ of Penn from 1893-95. Brooke was All-American in 1894 and 95, both years his team went undefeated. He was posthumously inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1969. Brooke passed away in 1938.

    Thanks for letting me share.

Charles Otis Gill has fascinated me - he and Gifford Pinchot, a fellow Yale graduate and first chief of the United States Forest Service and later governor of Pennsylvania, wrote two books on the waning influence of the rural church at the time of World War I. Gill was a missionary in China and a minister and farmer in Vermont. I have copies of some correspondence where Pinchot and Gill's brother are setting up a fund to help C.O. with his meager financial resources on the Vermont farm. This is the 1887 Yale team with Harry Beecher holding the ball and Gill standing second from the right wearing a vest and sporting a mustache -

The autograph on this photo is printed in the picture - nice to see the example you have Mark

Thanks guys for the kinds words. My focus is now just on 19th century Ivy League football autographs. I'm glad you enjoy the posts.

Mike - Are you sure Gill is the one with the mustache in the 1887 photo? I think Gill is the one to the far right. He was captain in 1889, so there should be a team photo of him holding the ball somewhere. I'll see if I can dig it up.

    Cheers

Mark, I think you're right - I was going by memory (not a good idea) but in looking it up I did find two other photos of Gill - one on the team and one alone

Mike - Glad that mystery is solved!

I noticed the Alexander Weyand archive is slowly making it's way to different auction sites. GoldinAuctions had an amazing Pudge Heffelfinger letter along with a "Fritz" signed Pollard TLS late last year. I purchased the Gill in a small lot of Weyand letters from Premier last week. Hopefully more letters from that collection make their way to auction soon. Weyand wrote to all the football legends of the 19th and early 20th century while writing several different football books during the 1920s-50s.

Speaking of books, I'd like to place a plug for a fantastic one which was released last year titled "Football Nation" by Susan Reyburn. This book is full of high quality photos of unique football memorabilia throughout the last 150 years. I actually finished reading the book and wished the author contacted individuals on this forum to provide scans. I've seen more high end, unique football memorabilia here than anywhere else. Maybe that is a future project some of you may be interested in.

    Happy Hunting.
