This is the description of the card by the seller..................

<< <i>Up for auction is a beautiful investment quality card graded a GEM MINT 10 by Graded Rookies Authenticated (GRA). Graded Rookies Authenticated, featured by Beckett in the August 2001 issue of Baseball Card Monthly (e-Trends), is amongst the toughest graders in the industry. The card up for auction is virtually flawless in all respects. Please see the scan of the card back for the individual subgrades in the centering, corners, edges, and surface categories. Simply stated, this one will make an outstanding addition to any advanced sportscard collection. Winning bidder please see listing for shipping and handling costs and add to final auction price. THANKS! >>

The reality is simply this: GRA, along with probably 50 other so-called grading companies, is just a fly-by-nite operation. I'd be too embarrassed to sell something like this based on the description. As long as you stick with PSA and SGC (with honorable mention - sometimes - to GAI, BGS, and possibly SCD), you will seldom go wrong.

I just get a kick out of all the hype touted by these auctions that feature the fly-by-nites.

    Hey there peeps! I'm back!

With training almost all but done at my new job and my schedule coming back to normal next week, I will be able to participate more in the discussions. Looks like there are a couple more '84 Donruss guys that have joined us! Very happy to see that. More and more folks are going towards the beauty of the '84 Donruss set.

I'm hitting the final stretch (last 75 cards or so) on my 1972 Topps Baseball set and I'll be able to get my attention back to working on completing the '84 Donruss set. image

I'll catch up on things and see what's been going on by reading the thread tonight.

    Dan,
That 52' Topps certainly has the mystique....but just think, you might be able to buy 50-100 1984 Donruss commons in PSA 9 for what you might spend for one PSA mid grade high number 52' Topps.
Trust me, this isn't much of a monster at all. Don't worry; we'll help you

Hate 'dem 8's, though every one except #15 Parrish is tough. But you gotta love 'dem 10's! I dont' think the grader liked any card name starting with 'Larry'. Still can't beat Ray's '10 ratio' but I'll take this submission anytime!

Great results! Someday when I grow up I hope I can grade like you guys!! LOL

I bought the "10"below for 5.50 yesterday so I can get a idea what a 10 looks like. I assume I didnt over pay for this card?

When this card comes in I guess I will throw my hat into the ring for this set on the registry! I will only be doing 9's (someone has to!) but if I find a 10 in my price range I will pick up on it. And hopefully after the holidays you all will have something left for me to buy from you!

I have to say this thread has brought me back to collecting life! It is fun knowing you have some guys that share your zest for a set and will be glad for you when you find that one certain card or a submission goes your way!! Dont ever change guys!

By the way what does a average "common" 10 go for? I mean what can I expect to pay. any ideas?
I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!

    McCard,

That's a fine 10 and for $5+ and shipping, you did fine. 10's are all over the place pricewise and rightly so: higher pops will usually sell for less - $7 to $12 is usually average, with lower pops hitting bigger numbers. I've paid as little as $1.50 and as much as $45 for psa 10 commons. 1/1's will usually go in the $30-$50 range but that can vary, depending on a variety of factors.

Don't feel uneasy about doing a set in 9's or mostly 9's. With the exception of RVC's incredible psa 10 set, we're all doing the 9 thing and adding 10's if/when they come along, but I doubt any of us is morgaging the farm over it. After all 9's are mint cards.

I try and take the best cards with the most appeal I can find, regardless if 9 or 10. I have several examples where I'm extremely satisfied with my 9's and if a 10 comes along and doesn't cut it, I'll just keep the 9.

    Arny,
Good to have you back. With this submission, I'm down to 4 cards for the basic set and 11 (would be 10 but sold my Kittle DK Steele) for the master. I've been shuffling cards in both sets recently so the completion % and gpa is not correct. Soon it will be all up to date, probably end of December.

Bill....great submission. Glad Castino worked out for you.....But show us a scan of the Bumbry...want to see what he looks like in a 10. Great job.

McCardguy - Welcome aboard. Nice 10! Bill's analysis of the general collecting style of this group, is spot on. Anything MINT 9 or better is in. If your patient there will be lot's of bargains for you.

I have a nice DK Steele Kittle to submit that should 9 or 10, so I let mine go for an agreed upon price.

As frustrating as Bumbry has been, I've found a few that were just a hair off centering-wise, so it stood to reason a 9-caliber card would be had at some point, and in this instance the centering was extremely tight. Make no mistake, a Bumbry 10 is ever so sweet and this one was certainly was worthy of a 10, but of all the cards that impressed me most in this batch was the McGraw 10. That's got to be one of the 6 to 8 toughest cards in 9/10 form, and I have yet to find any other raw that comes close to displaying the centering and color as this baby does.

Of all 25 cards submitted, I thought the Cey, Bumbry, Rose, McGraw, one of the Ripkens, Garcia, and the Rice had solid chances at 10, so hitting 5 out of 7 ain't bad! My only disappointment, other than the few 8's was Kiko Garcia and one of the Ripkens, which both 9'd. Thought both had an extremely legit shot at a 10, and at some point may revisit them image.

Oh, and check out the pop report on #546 Vance Law .......... of the 9 or so examples that have 8'ed (no 9's/10's yet), I've submitted about 6 or 7 and remember sending one in on my first 84D submission almost 3 years ago. This card will probably go down as the most "oh so close, yet so far" card in my set, so it would be fitting if the 'thorn in my side' Law was the last card needed ........................

I'll post scans when the cards come back.
  • Options
Bill - You've peaked my curiosity. I'll have to go back and look at my Vance Law cards.

Although I've still got a bunch of cards left to scan and enter into the Registry, I am quite proud to announce I've broken through the 50% barrier on the set in PSA 9 Plus.

This thread has been a constant inspiration and along with my 4 batches of submissions, I have Bill and Bruce to thank for additional chunks of the existing whole.

I love the scans. I'm away from my cards so often that being able to access them from a remote locale is rewarding and the 84' Donruss present really well in scans. Below is the updated set link. I hope to scan and add a few more cards tonight as well.

Way to go Ray. I was striving for over 9 grades also but have backed off a little. I've added a few 8's, mostly DK's until I can find them in 9's which has lowered my overall grade. However I am now also seeking 10's which I wasn't doing before.....you guys really got me hooked now!!!imageimageimage

Don't know which icon applies yet...maybe they all do!!
  • Options
Al - Completion Pct. is the important number anyhow. As long as your happy with the quality of the 8's you add, there is no embarassment in that. Your progress has been amazing as well.

Does anyone know who stinkynuts is on eBay. Seems this guy is buying up every 84' Donruss set that comes along. He's definitely accumulating raw cards by the pound. Is he a Registry guy?

You guys are cracking me up tonight. Made me remember a Saturday Night Live episode many years ago with one of the Baldwin brothers...don't remember which one but it was a Christmas skit where his name was Sweatty if I remember right and he was making Christmas "balls" and of course they were name, yeah you guessed it, Christmas Sweatty balls.....that episode had me rolling on the ground laughing ...... anyways back to the important stuff, I have some more cards in at PSA now but probably won't see them for awhile....one was posted on the 2nd and the other arrived on the 10th believe it or not.....from last month's special.

Keep a watchful eye out and you'll find something. I bought a set two weeks ago using buy it now for $60 believe it or not. Got the set and it's factory sealed. Check out the BUY IT NOW if you haven't been. I haven't broken the cellophane on any of the blocks yet but they look great. I also won a set about a month ago when Bill and Ray got me hooked for $125.....I'm still looking to for some more bargains but so far no luck.........I also have a buddy who has four sets that he broke and are real nice but he doesn't want to sell them.......I keep pestering him, trying to wear him down!!!

    Ray,
Here's a bold prediction - I'll bet you hit 179% complete by the end of April.

    Al,
If you put your ear very close to the top side of a factory set cello block and be very still, you will may hear a faint voice that says 'open - open - open'. You may also notice sudden movement of the cello blocks, in the form of very slight wiggles or twisting, if you stare at them long enough with the lid open.

As far as your buddy with 4 sets? There's a faint voice that says 'pester - pester - pester'......................

    Al,
That's really pretty nice. Congrats on the Law in PSA 9; that's a real tough one. ..and that Walker in 10.
All in all it looks like you got a bunch of stuff there you can plug into your set.
Gotta love it though, when those grades pop. image
    Having fun through you tonight.

Thanks Ray. I have one more 52 card submission I haven't gotten back yet.....I placed the Mattingly from the factory set I bought in that submission along with a McGraw and Staub that I thought were real nice........hopefully it will pan out....one can only dream of 10's!!! I'll have scans to post when the cards arrive.....boy, what a Christmas present....

Not too shabby Al. Better than some of my original submissions. Sheesh.

If you have any dupes, please make a list because I'd love to see if you had anything that I might need. Ray, I checked your dupes set and nothing that I needed. But, with all of those submissions, should only be a matter of time.

Al - Congrats on the Law! Amazing............I've spend darn close 3 years finding a Law that will 9 - then WHAMO - Al pops up with a 1/1. Ray did the same thing with Fitzgerald. You guys are killing me!!

Just goes to show ya that what's tough for one person might not be for another. That's one paradox of set building but it sure keeps things interesting.

BTW, are those STEEL's really STEEL's?..............I hope you didn't get any mislables. Finally, on my last submission they got them ALL correct!

The STEEL's are for real. I took your advice and made sure I placed a bold message with the submission so they would get it right. ALso I do plan to make a list of doubles I have and hope to be able to make some trades with others who may have something I need in exchange for my extras....just been so darn busy with the holidays and all.....by the way never to early...hope all the fellow 84 D's have a happy holiday and most of safe holiday season......image

    Happy Holidays right back atcha.

Trades work for me. I will trade for PSA 10's I need. I have bothe 10's and 9's in my Trade Winds set on the Registry. Will trade multiple 9's for any 10.
Also looking to make straight trades for 9's I need as well. In other words almost anything goes image
    Let's have fun!

    Hey Al,

Picked up my subs today and will post scans later tonight (pst). You also have a small package on the way, and I'm sure you'll return the favor image

It's eye candy time - here you go.........enjoy

Here's Al's raw Castino in new clothes. M. Young is an absolute bear, so a 9 is always welcome. Ripken will be revisited sometime and Stenhouse is a 1/1 9 with one 10. I've had this card for a long time and didn't submit due to the slightly rough-cut RH border.

McGraw will replace the 1/1 9 and is a far superior example - the colors are stunning and the scan doesn't show how nice this card is. The elusive Bumby finally finds a home with me. Ramos is tough. Garcia simply looks and bleeds color similar to the others, but it 9'ed - it will be revisited.

Beautifully centered Rose - whadda think Neal? I'm 2 for 2 in psa 10's for Krukow. Cey is nice and there are a few 10's around but I couldn't find one for the longest time. Here's my nemis.................Mr. Law, AGAIN with an 8. Yeah I know the centering T/B is off but thought it ok for 9-land.....a minutely dinged corner perhaps?

That darn Law gets you every time!

Great stuff especially with the Bumbry, the DKs, McGraw and the Krukow. Can you add the McGraw to my list of 'needed' cards Bill? Or, is it already spoken for?

Hi everyone....guess who is upset on Ohio today.....I just received my lastest submission back and it include 18 DK's that I thought they had labeled correctly.....boy was I wrong.....all 18 of them are mislabeled. This occurred even though I had the submission labeled correctly and I even took the time to include STEELE in the variety field. Guess we will find out how PSA is at handling mistakes, I've already sent off a message to them....Great news for you Bill.....they didn't screw up the Law card!!.

They'll have you send them back in to get corrected with specific instructions. I went through the trouble of asking about them and just haven't sent them in. I've got at least 3/4 of my DKs mislabeled, I think.

I have to get around to submitting these few '84s that I have. Just can't seem to get the time to do the forms. I have never done a submission via the mail before as I had PSA locally twice in the last few years (only two submissions that I've done) and handled it in person. In each case, the PSA rep filled out all of the info for me. So, I just have to sit down and see how to go about it. I'm sure it's not that difficult. I've got that darn Bumbry to send in and a couple of others that are decently centered and have outside shots at a 10.
